Let me just say I use to love this place as a kid. I guess things change ana people do too. The gravy was extra watery and had no taste. The rice was extra mushy. The Green beans were distasteful with sugar in them. The greens taste old with no taste. The macaroni and cheese was not good at all. Very mushy.... The cornbread was dry and over cooked. The chicken had no taste so I had to douse it in hot sauce. The pork chops had a good flavor but the gravy ruined them. Too watery. And to top it off they didn't give us any plastic ware to eat with. Alright lemme break down Wyatt's for you. Wyatt's has been here longer than me. It's been here long enough to go from "You couldn't pay me to live around here." to "My job doesn't pay me enough to live around here" and that's for a good reason - it's good BBQ. Actually I shouldn't even say good bbq, they've got a little bit of everything soul here and it's all good. The ribs, chicken, and turkey wings are my favorites and they all just work. It's a small hole in the wall shack that hasn't been upgraded since forever, but don't let that drive you away. The food is good here and it's always been good. The mac and cheese is bomb, the yams are sweet, the peach cobbler is banging, the ribs lit - I could go into so many different words but I'll leave it with 'the food is good.' This place ROCKS! Great food and the people are so nice! I was in Atlanta for an interview and searched the internet for the best bbq - it failed miserably. Fortunately, asking locals (generally this provides the best advice) worked and I was told that Wyatt's Country BBQ had THE best pulled pork. I went there immediately and it was amazing - so good in fact that I returned the next day to take some on the plane for my trip home. The pulled pork (sandwich) was perfectly seasoned - no sauce needed. The mac and cheese was old style good; the black-eyed peas and cornbread were like my mom's. The ribs I took home were so tender and had great flavor - none of that fake smoke anywhere near these ribs! I've patronized Wyatt's since they were Sgt Wyatt's on Gordon Rd, near Hightower in SW Atlanta. Yes, it looks like a joint and there is no indoor dining. Its old but clean. But, what it lacks in appearance it more than makes up in the always good food and kind friendly service. I drive across Atlanta to get their beef ribs. As we were driving to visit our (grown) kids in EAV area, my hub said "that is the best BBQ in Atlanta. Having grown up near Memphis, I wanted to try it. I have driven past there many times and barely even noticed it. It is a little green "shack" behind Da Corner Cafe at the corner of Memorial and Maynard Terr. So we stopped on the way home and picked up lunch to go: pork ribs, "all white meat" chicken dinner with collard greens and cole slaw. Although Mem area is known for dry rub BBQ, I always preferred the wet sauce - sweet and tangy style. My H told the truth, it is hands down the best southern style BBQ in Atlanta. The sauce is perfect for my taste. The collard greens were so flavorful with collard greens not a lot of other stuff, cooked to southern perfection. The slaw was not for me / too creamy, but it is fresh with a zing in the flavor. The chicken was tender but at all soggy or stringy, also cooked exactly right. It was a fantastic simply delicious meal. The place is teeny tiny. I haven't been I side but H told me the whole place is about the size of our kitchen. It was always a takeout place. Violating all rules of fair rating, I'm tempted to award Wyatt's five stars based on it's awesome shackiness, or is it shackosity. Whichever. This place looks like it can't survive a strong wind yet seems to have been in place since the late Pleistocene. Takeout only, and as others have mentioned, there's hardly room inside to order. Kind of reminds me of the Caribbean Chicken & Fish shack near Ponce & N. Decatur. No posted menu but you'll find laminated menus on the right as you face the counter. The cash register is to the left. Ribs, collards, cole slaw lunch was on par with nearby Daddy D'z, although I'd give the nod to Daddy's. At Wyatt's, I ordered the ribs with sauce, and that may have been a mistake. The sauce is good, mind you, but there's a lot of it. Maybe order it on the side? The ribs are tasty with plenty of charred meat, some of which was about as chewy as jerky. They are quite fatty, too. Collards are cooked to death, as they should be, and not vinegary. Cole slaw is standard mayo-based slaw and is pretty good if you like that. The cornbread - I got a corner piece - was too dry to be good. All told, as is the norm for BBQ joints, you'll be happy and stuffed after finishing all of that. Parking is a bit haphazard. There are marked spaces right up against the shack (don't run into it or you'll cause it to collapse) and some unmarked concrete next to that. It sort of runs into the parking for the cell phone/car wash/whatever business is next to Wyatt's. No-nonsense, friendly service. 3 1/2 stars for the food, an extra half star for ambiance. August 16th, 2013 My sweetheart Liz V knows how much I love BBQ. She posted a glorious review that might as well have been a bat signal into the midnight sky. For within moments of reading it, I slipped on my Super BBQ Snob leotard suit and began to route my course to disassemble this BBQ with my super BBQ eating teeth. But like all suburban superheros, a villain (aka my wife) opposed me! She told me she was already working on dinner and I wasn't going anywhere. Dang it!!!! "But I have this suit on honey and it's hard to get out of" I pleaded, but to no avail. The options I was given were a) stay home and eat or b) never receive another home cooked meal again. ***pffffft was the sound of my BBQ bat signal going out*** But never fear BBQ citizens! She said nothing about going to get it the following day :-) So while she was off to work, I took my rare day off to continue my Quest for great BBQ in the Metro ATL. ------------ - - - - - - THE EXPERIENCE I must admit I rolled up to this joint completely surprised at how loosely the term "diner" is being used. This place looks more like a trailer home with a severely decomposing roof & screened front porch. The structure looked so questionable I was afraid to go inside. If hole in the wall had a picture next to it in the dictionary, it would surely be of Wyatt's Diner. That being said, I firmly believe Hole in the Walls provide some of the countries best tasting foods and Wyatt's surely delivered. Aside from a small sitting area, space is crazy limited. The order counter is at the entrance of the kitchen. One of the ladies from the kitchen tried to squeeze by me in a space meant for lovers only, because I'm certain she felt almost as violated as I did as every nook and cranny of her body bumped along every nook and cranny of mine! LOL A laminated menu is right there on the counter where someone waits to take your order while another will cash you out when your food is wrapped and ready. I paid my ticket and took my bounty back to my car for consumption. ------------ - - - - - - THE FOOD The BBQ Rib Diner ($10) included about 6 bones of ribs, sides and one cornbread square. The sides I chose were candied yams (which were ah-mazing) and Macaroni n' Cheese (very, very good). The ribs had excellent flavor, definitely seasoned well enough to not need one drop of BBQ sauce. However, my eyebrow was raised when they took my ribs and placed them in a microwave for about 1 minute just prior to handing me my order. This indicated to me the ribs had been ready for a while or possibly yesterday's leftovers... which was more likely the case considering I had come just one hour after opening. This also cause the ribs to be drier than I would have liked and to top that off, they were barely luke warm in the center. I must say however, that despite my disappointment in the temperature, they had outstanding flavor. ------------ - - - - - - THE VERDICT This is some GOOOOOD BBQ and really good sides! I'll keep my super BBQ beacon lite for a return visit in hopes that I might experience ribs off the rack instead of microwave heated. I was on the way to Anns Snack Bar when I smelled the amazing BBQ coming from Wyatts. I pulled in to the parking lot and stared oddly at this tiny little shack trying to convince myself to go in. Memorial Drive is full of what I like to call "mystery food joints." From the outside, the buildings look like termites holding hands but the real treasure is inside. Just like Miss Anns, this tiny little house packs some amazing food. I walked through the screen porch in to the building and was immediately greeted by a man carrying a small mop like object covered in barbecue sauce. The inside of the restaraunt is tiny with several prep areas, steaming pots, hot plates of sides and a make shift smoke pit fireplace. I didn't care what the place looked like. I wanted whatever they had in those pots and whatever this man was painting with sauce! The guy made a few funny comments about how I stood out and asked me if I was lost but I quickly gained his trust when I asked about their burnt ends and pig feet. Don't let my OCD wardrobe fool you! I know my BBQ and I take it very seriously! His wife appeared beyond the cash register and came over to talk to me about how she made everything daily with her own two hands. "No cans in here, baby!" She said with a wink. "I put my foot in it!" Now, don't freak out my fellow OCD Yelpers, she doesn't literally put her foot in the food but if she did, its one hell of a foot because the food is amazing! I ordered the full rack of ribs, a pulled pork sandwich and lemonade. They have a seperate screened in deck area to the right of the building that is used as their dining room with a good view of the parking lot and Memorial Drive. Excellent people watching while you stuff your face with their lick your fingers clean barbecue! The ribs were thick and meaty and while I hate to admit it, put Fat Matt's to the #2 spot! I chose mine without sauce because the rub is outstanding. I found myself forcing myself to chew longer just so I can keep tasting each bite. The meat falls off the bone and is so moist and smoked so perfectly I am surprised no one else has told me about this place. The pulled pork sandwich was delicious as well. They served the sandwich between 2 pieces of white bread and it soaked up the sauce perfectly. I loved the white bread as compared to the typical hamburger bun. Real Southern BBQ is served this way, I am glad I could help you learn something! Why 4 Stars......On the way to Ration and Dram on a date we passed Wyatt's with a small crowd of 4 or 5 waiting in a light rain. I instantly bookmarked this place with plans to return. Later this same day after leaving R&D headed to a family gathering the Saturday night before Easter we passed by again noted the crowd gone and decided to swing in and check it out. After verifying the authenticity of this place, noting piles of wood, and a lack of boiling pots (see Fat Matt's) We greedily ordered a half slab, potato salad, collard greens and cornbread to have as or Easter dinner. Fast forward Peter Cottontail is way down the trail and I put the ribs in a steamer to warm. OMG ! The ribs are legit. The cornbread was like grandma's and (WHACK) That was ya momma getting smacked over the ribs! Visiting Atlanta and saw this place while stopping to get gas and decided to try it. We were greeted as we entered the place with a smile and the folks were friendly. They told us what they had left for the day as apparently they make a certain amount and sell out daily. I ordered pork BBQ dinner with potato salad and green beans and my husband order the rib dinner with greens and coleslaw. Reasonably priced $23 bucks total. Food was excellent and fresh! Well, this place came highly recommended for there barbecue ribs.. so I ordered just that with Mac Cheese, and cabbage. The Mac cheese and cabbage was on FIRE. I mean delicious, delicious, delicious. Now the ribs... is another story. The meat was hard to eat. Not tender, not falling off the bone good at all. The sauce wasn't cooked into the meat it was just poured over it. Definitely not worth the double order price of $34 plus the Grubhub charge totaling $54. Also, I ordered 2 orders of ribs (6 pieces and I got 5 and the other order I got a turkey wing) Ain't nobody ordered a fukn turkey wing... Having grown up in East Atlanta, I used to love Wyatt's and over the years, my family has ordered from them countless times and introduced so many others to them. Today, they lost all of our business. We know they run out of food early, so we called ahead and ordered 3 slabs of ribs. The lady who works there said she would hold them for us. I told her we would be there at 5 pm. We arrived and had to wait outside in line because there was no room inside. As I was standing in line, she yells out that they have no more ribs or bbq chicken. I wait patiently in line thinking she means they have no more outside of what she reserved for me. She finally gets to me after waiting 13 minutes and ask her if she has the ones she held for me. She says that I wasn't there at 5 and they held them for 15 minutes and couldn't hold them any longer. It's now 5:20, so she just outright lied. She's always been somewhat rude but we overlooked it in the past because the food was so good and we only had to deal with her long enough to place an order, but I can't look past the lack of integrity she showed today. Anna's BBQ is less than 5 minutes away in Kirkwood and the food is delicious, they have seating and they are always kind to their customers. In addition, they were voted best BBQ in Atlanta for 2019. Alright, so I think the food is a bit more on the 3 stars side than the 4 but the service is great so I am happy to round up rather than down. I've been a handful of times since finally mustering up the courage to try it out. I mean, the place looks like it could fall apart at any moment. However, sometimes the best food comes out of little shacks like that. So it took me a while to get it together. Anyway, I'm glad I have because I do enjoy the food. Here's what I've tried: pork ribs - tender and delicious, although I have a very sneaking suspicion they are boiled first pulled pork - super smokey and kinda salty but not bad chicken - a solid choice if you don't care for pork mac & cheese - decent, they'll do in a pinch but not drool-worthy baked beans - solid, pretty average coleslaw - did not care for this one, unfortunately...like it can't decide whether it's tangy or creamy/sweet yams - YUM, probably my favorite side Moving on to the service, the folks here are fantastic. They're friendly and sweet. One time, they had an issue with their credit card machine. I was three dollars short in cash and the lady behind the register waved her hand and said to bring it next time. They asked if they could troubleshoot using my card and I agreed. They ran through a few $0.01 transactions and even though none of them went through, they kept trying to give me change. I was like, ummm no, I am the one who owes YOU money! When I came back a couple of weeks later with the three dollars, I reminded the lady about the machine issue and the first thing she said was, "Oh, don't we owe you some money?" Haha. But one day I decided to give it a shot. As I walked up the ramp into the shack...LITERALLY THIS PLACE IS A SHACK...I smelled all types of goodness going on.... The space is primarily their kitchen, with a small area for you to stand and wait on your food. I wanted to sample a few different things, So I got a slab of ribs and a Pork Chop dinner...(yes, I said 1 slab of ribs and a pork chop dinner...dont judge me, I have a problem and I am working on it). The service was friendly, older black women that remind me of my aunts in the kitchen. The food is reasonably priced and somewhat cheap for their dinners that come with 2 sides. I took my items home, spread out a towel, and went ape shit on the ribs and the chops....heavenly. The sauce is a bit sweet, but it reminds me of good "hood barbecue"..the kind that Big Larry at the end of the block fixes on Saturday nights...nice smokey flavor, with incredible sauce...delicious. The chps were pretty fantastic as well. Fried to perfection and accompanied by Mac & Cheese which was unmemorable and collard greens which had a hint of sweetness....yummy. Today for lunch... Wyatt's Diner. I have heard a few good reviews and figured it looked like a place I should check out. First off... For for those who ask on here why it is called a diner when it is a BBQ place... they have more than BBQ. This is a soul food joint. They have two kinds of greens plus rice with gravy. They sell porkchops and oxtail. They can call it Wyatt's Gastroshed for all I care. That being said... This place is on! While it isn't as tasty on the pulled pork front at Fox Bro's... the sauce here is better in my opinion. I also liked the potato salad better here and it reminded me of the kind that shows up at family picnics (which is a good thing!). Combine that with some rice-n-gravy to ride side car to some messy delicious bbq pork... and you have something awesome. I will be back and if I were looking for some soul food or bbq with real cred... I would check it out if I were you. Also, if you need some bootleg movies, music or car detailing... these can be found in the same parking lot. It is like one stop shopping... all they need to do is get that guy who sells socks and gear to set up in the parking lot and they would be complete. Okay, so one of my partner's co-worker's raved to him about this place being the best BBQ in Atlanta, so of course we had to check it out because I have been craving some good BBQ lately. The place is a SHACK! Really small and I can't even imagine how jam packed and uncomfortable it would be there at a busy peak time. Enough room for maybe only 5 people to stand inside, so of course this is a take-out only restaurant, no dining area. Now to the food. My partner and I both ordered the pork rib tips, which is what was recommended that we get by the co-worker, and that came with 2 sides each. I got candied yams and mac & cheese, and my partner got the collard greens and candied yams also. For this place to literally be a shabby-looking whole in the wall the food was SUPER DELICIOUS and that macaroni & cheese was among the best tasting I have ever had! We also got sweet potato pie and pound cake as dessert. Their desserts are homemade and absolutely delicious also, don't pass it up! The staff was really cool too. 2 guys, probably father and son, and they were really nice and thankful telling us to make sure we come back. Well, we will definitely be back. I'm pretty close to Wyatt's and finally ventured in a couple months back. Barbeque in the vicinity? Gotta hit that up. It's definitely a shack with no room inside so you gotta get your food togo. Everyone's very nice there so don't be intimidated. Anyway, like a lot of, as Scott M's puts it, "hood barbecue" spots, the sauce definitely takes center stage over the meat. The spare ribs here were pretty good as far as shack bbq goes, but it's definitely not great quality meat that's perfectly seasoned and smoked. These are more just ribs that are thrown on the grill. Not as much my thing, but they are good eating with the good sauce on them. I'd get them again if I was feeling like this style. BBQ pork sandwich - The pork was not particularly good. Honestly, it was just a messy and unmemorable sandwich. Collards - Decent, but maybe a little too sweet. Mac & cheese - Disappointing. Sort of liquid-y and separated instead of nice and creamy. Wyatt's is straight out of central casting of what an authentic southern barbecue shack should look like. And like most of the best, there was a line out the door when we arrived at 4:30 on a Saturday afternoon. We had already had a full barbecue lunch, so we didn't fully put it through its paces by trying a mess of sides, but we got a slab of ribs, turnip greens and cornbread. The sides were not memorable - the greens were cold, and the cornbread dry - but the ribs were amazing. They were big and juicy, and the sauce was one of the best I've had in Atlanta - sweet and sour, vinegar based, thinner than many sweet sauces that can sometimes be gloppy and overwhelm the ribs. Service was friendly, and there's a screened-in porch across the parking lot where you can eat your carry-out food. Definitely high quality meats and worth a trip. read more
