I LOVE THIS CAFÉ!! This is the cutest warmest environment and I love the plating of the dishes. The cups are ceramic faces, adding to the theme. I ordered the Chilaquiles Verdes and a Torta de Birria. Both very flavorful, no complaints. As for the drinks, I really recommended ordering the Hot Oaxaca Mocha and a Iced Xaman Horchata! I went for lunch with my sister. We got the Oaxaca mocha and the duvalin (strawberry and chocolate) latte. Both were fantastic, not too sweet and balanced flavors. Then we shared the birria tacos and chilaquiles with mole. Both were very flavorful and had a nice spice level (we're used to spicy food). I was especially surprised at the depth of flavor in the mole, and the chips had a perfect texture. Then we got the carlotta de Mamey for dessert at the server's recommendation. Neither of us have had mamey before and it was so good! The crust in the tart was buttery with a soft crumb, and the tropical fruit had a delicate flavor. The decor in the cafe was also super cute and cozy. I highly recommend this place if you want to try some traditional Mexican food. read more

Went here because our daughter was in town and chose this place. Went in the morning for breakfast and it wasn't busy at all. I think maybe 2 tables with a couple at each. Little cute place. We were a party of 4. My daughter and her friend got the chilaquiles rojos and they didn't like it. They also shared a concha. Said it was ok. My husband got the omelette with serrano ham and he enjoyed it. I got the season salad with steak. The honey lime vinaigrette was sooo good! Steak no seasoning. I got the martini for my drink. Daughter and friend both got the Espresso Martinez and they really liked it. Said it was strong and perfect. Hubby got the Garibaldi and he liked it. Service was a bit slow for it to not be busy at all. Glad we tried it but probably wont be back. Our bill was $150! read more

NOTE: THIS IS A REVIEW FOR AYAHUASCA CANTINA. I tried to create a new listing for it becuase it's really a totally different concept, but Yelp moderators deleted the listing and moved my review here instead. -------- Xaman Cafe is an attractive but non-attention-grabbing little cafe along a nondescript strip of West Jefferson Blvd. in a part of Oak Cliff that hasn't yet been overtaken by redevelopment. If you enter the front door and just keep walking straight, you'll reach another door -- a solid wood one that looks somewhat out of place relative to the front cafe. Push through that door, and you're in Ayahuasca Cantina, a speakeasy-type bar and restaurant in the back of Xaman Cafe. Both the food menu and the drink menu (which heavily features mezcal, sotol, and tequila) are incredibly inventive, and the quality being put out here is truly top-notch. Cocktails: - Sangre del Desierto is like a sotol bee's knees. Nice but not something I'd order twice. - Brujo was my favorite drink, a really nicely balanced mezcal hibiscus margarita. It's $12 usually but on happy hour for $8 from 5 to 7 pm M-F, so snag it then! - I ended with the Tang Sour just to see what they're doing with gin here. It was interesting and sweet and definitely designed to be a crowd-pleaser for people who get dragged here by their mezcal-loving friends (one of whom suggested this drink to me, whereas I would have been much happier with another sotol or mezcal cocktail). Food: - Flor de Calabeza (braised rabbit in squash blossoms) was really interesting. I liked it a lot because of the unique flavor profile -- it's not something I've ever tasted before. My dining companion didn't love it. - Flautas de Jamaica (blue corn tortillas filled with hibiscus flowers) was too floral even for my taste. It's a bold move, and I give them kudos for trying it, but eating flowers as the main substance of a dish is a weird experience. There was this very floral flavor cutting through all the savory flavors, which is...well, it was fine, but not something I'd order again. - Chicharron (pork confit with tortillas) was delicious; the star here actually might have been the tortillas, which were clearly homemade. Our waiter said this is his favorite dish and a popular one on the menu, and I can see why. - Pato en Pipian (sous vide duck breast) was the star of the show. I've never had duck served with a flavor profile quite like this, and it was phenomenal. If I came back, I'd order this again in a heartbeat, plus maybe try the octopus carpaccio, the wild boar ribs, and the charceuterie board. Service/Ambiance: - Although it was pretty empty when we walked in, there were no chairs at any of the tables. A group of men at a back table stood up and brought a chair over to one of the tables so we could sit down. It felt a little bit like we had intruded on a private gathering; a bit awkward. - The bartender/waiter was very patient and helpful in explaining the menu and offering suggestions. When he found out we'd been sent by a mutual friend, he brought a free shot of mezcal with the check, which was really nice. He seemed very appreciative of our business, which is understandable -- although Ayahuasca is absolutely, 100% worth the crowds that the Bishop Arts area of Oak Cliff draws, this place is definitely a bit off the beaten path, and its speakeasy location (hidden inside a relatively generic cafe) doesn't make it easy to stumble across, either. However, everything about Ayahuasca shows a lot of careful thought and planning, from the menu to the dishware, and they're taking risks with menu items (both drinks and food) that definitely are not mainstream. It's really refreshing to see that, and I hope they make it. They're open Tuesday - Saturday, 5pm - 12am. Check it out! read more

Really enjoyed my visit here! Relaxed, neighborhood cafe vibe with authentic cuisine and the most incredible dishware. Seriously. They have the coolest plates and cups. Highly recommend the Cafe de Olla -- it is a coffee blend they make in-house that tastes like a lightly sweetened, light roast with a strong blend of spices -- maybe some cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, star anise? Great both hot and iced! Also had the chilaquiles with chicken and salsa verde. You can choose if you want it served with chicken, steak or vegetables only. It was excellent. My only "wish list" item would be for complimentary or discount refills on coffee. A cafe de olla is $6 which already feels like a lot to pay for coffee (even really incredible blended coffee) and then there's really no refill option. If you want another cup of coffee you're ordering another $6 cup. read more

My wife and I tried Ayahuasca Cantina this afternoon. Sat at the bar for more than 10 minutes as the staff, including the Manager walked past us without so much as a hello. The place wasn't even very busy! A staff member finally brought us half filled glasses of water and menus and walked away. No "Hello", no "Welcome to Ayahuasca", nothing. My wife wanted to ask a question about an item on the menu and a staff member turned her back as she was asking the question. No eye contact, no attentiveness, no courtesy. As we prepared to leave I asked for the manager, who apologized and blamed it on the staff even though he had ignored us, too. They're just taking his lead on how to treat customers. I haven't been more disappointed in a service experience in years. read more

Stopped here almost at midnight to get some coffee on before our 2 hour car ride home! The baristas was extraordinary and very gave off a great vibe. He explained all the coffee options and gave us great recommendations. We got one Cafe de Olla that reminds me of grandmas house and a really strong coffee (can't remember the name) but it's drip brewed! And of course a strawberry concha! The place is expensive but you got there for the experience and the high end style. there is even a surprise at the room all the way down go through the back doors. That's all I will say! Great environment and not too crowded on a Saturday night. Waiters and Baristas wore masks and there wasn't any overcrowded areas. Granted we were there around 11:30 PM. read more

Xaman cafe took me back to a coffee shop in my hometown. I was immediately immersed into my hispanic roots. The esthetic of this place is absolutely amazing, and the customer service is outstanding. I ordered a horchata with espresso and it was one of the best horchatas I've ever had. Aside from the horchata that I had at the cafe back in my hometown, this is the only one that has ever compared and it is AMAZING. The cups that they put their drinks in is definitely something that sets them apart and ties into their culture even more. I think I noticed that they sell them too, so I'm going to have to eventually purchase one! read more

We'll definitely be adding this to the regular rotation of restaurants we visit. To be honest, I tried coming here two weeks ago and only saw the coffee menu and sweet breads, and the line was crazy so we left. After doing a little more research, I knew there was more to the menu and more space to sit down, and thank goodness we came back! We started with coffee drinks: cafe de olla (coffee with cinnamon and other delicious spices) and the horchata latte. Both were great but the cafe de olla was better, imo. Everything on the menu looked good, but I landed on the mollete with egg, and my husband got the chilaquiles with chorizo. Again, both were great, but I liked the chilaquiles best. The server sold us on dessert, so we got the strawberry cake (he called it fresa and crema, but I think that set my expectations too high), but it wasn't as good as everything else. Wish I could give seven eight or ten stars to this immediate staple to our restaurant rotation. I'm rather a snooty reviewer with high standards for boutique spaces, but hot dang! This place blows the roof off! Rock-solid coffee in the morning hours blend seamlessly into one of Dallas' premiere dining locations by evening. Rotating tacos, tamarind ribs (I beg you not to pass on these) and rabbit stuffed squash blossom... how could you ask for more innovative or delicious nosh?? The cocktail program is awesome, nothing brain breaking but everything presented to perfection in custom thrown ceramic cups, and a wide enough menu to appease even picky drinkers. My hot take? Skip the ceviche, grab extra ribs, and make it in time for happy hour so you can down as many "brujas" as possible! read more
