If I had to describe Xian Kitchen in one word: LEGIT! The food served here is 100% authentic Shaanxi cuisine. We visited this restaurant a few times pre-pandemic, and now that we're venturing out again we have been back twice. The food and service are just as good as they have ever been. The most popular dish here is probably their massively portioned Da Pan Ji, a giant plate containing very long, wide, thick, chewy handmade noodles in a savory, slightly spicy sauce with chicken, potato, and other veggies. This one dish can easily feed 5 people. When the two of us get it we end up with 2 meals of leftovers. Another favorite is their tasty rouburger, aka Chinese Hamburger. We like to order this because it comes out fast and is pre-cut in half so we can both nosh on it while waiting for our other selections to be prepared. Other stand-outs are the pan fried noodle with choice of beef, egg, pork or lamb and the stewed lamb soup. Liang Pi is a favorite of my lady's. We get it many places. Here it is fine but not the best so we pass over it usually. Their fried jelly is tasty, but the portion is too big and it doesn't hold up well as leftovers, but if you have a larger group this is a must-try. Their chili oil condiment is deluxe, better than other places. Like a lot of places post-pandemic, Xian Kitchen uses a contactless ordering system. Just point your mobile device's camera at the QR code on the table and a menu pops up in Chinese or English. Order on-screen and hit send to submit the choices to the kitchen. Xian Kitchen has always done a lot of take-out business, they have a long table covered in pickup bags, and this likely sustained them through the hard times. Now, in addition to a temporary tent in the parking lot holding 4 tables their indoor dining is back. I really hope the powers-that-be allow restaurants to keep their outside dining for some good reasons. Having the outdoor tables could increase capacity, possibly boosting sales in a time when eateries need to recapture lost revenue. Also in the dreadful event there is a resurgence of COVID the outdoor options remain available. Outdoor dining is also still safer and I prefer to use it when I can. I have to say wasn't as impressed as I was hoping to be. The liangpi was soft but it's a heftier version than I like, and I wish there had been some more garnishes to add some textural diversity. I also wish I had gotten it with the sesame paste sauce. The roujiamo was super oily, which I didn't love. Also got their tomato and egg noodles, and while I liked the noodles, the tomato and egg sauce itself felt lacking. All in all, not a bad meal, just I've had better renditions of all these dishes elsewhere that suit my tastes better. read more

Cash only! I'm not sure why the ratings for this place are so low; we were really happy with this place and thought the service was pretty good as well with the convenient iPad system. Here's hoping their rating improves soon. If there's a wait, you'll have to sign in on the iPad outside. We came here on a Saturday night at around 8:30 PM and ended up walking into a packed restaurant with a wait time of about 15 minutes. Not too bad but I was surprised there were that many people eating relatively late. Ordering is also done with the iPad system that even tells you how many times certain items have been ordered! We ordered their most popular dishes: 1. Cold noodle (no sesame AND with sesame) 5/5 I have a hard time deciding if I like the dish with sesame or without, but we ended up ordering one of each. I think in this case I liked the dish with sesame since it made it kind of creamy with a nutty taste. I like that they give quite a large portion of noodles (more than QQ noodle) and the texture of the noodles is great too! Very thickly sliced noodles with some gluten and cucumber mixed in. 2. Special hot oil noodle (Biang biang noodle) 5/5 These noodles were springy in texture and delicious! I like that the dish didn't feel too oily even though they literally pour hot oil on top of the noodles. I also didn't see much black vinegar in the dish which is usually a staple but maybe it was there and I didn't taste it. 3. Pork rouburger 4/5 This rouburger was pretty good but I did think it was a bit on the dry side. The outside of the burger was hard and the inside was soft and fluffy which is exactly what it should be. The meat portion was pretty good too, although I do wish they had some more "juice" to the meat so that it wouldn't have been too dry. 4. Noodle of soy bean paste sauce (zha jiang mian) 3.5/5 We only ordered this item because someone in our group really does not like to eat spicy food. If you're nervous about that for the other items, don't be because you can customize the level of spice for everything, and even when we ordered the normal versions of the items above, they were not that spicy at all. With that being said, i thought this dish was just okay. It wasn't bad but I definitely would not recommend it over any of the other items we got! I was really pleased with everything we ordered here! I'll definitely be coming back since I thought the food was excellent with large portions at a decent price. The beef noodles soup was good for non spicy eaters. I deducted 1 star because the QR code menu asked if you wanted English and still had items without English text or photos. Pretty damn delicious. I loved all the flavors. We ordered two noodle dishes, one of their crispy sandwiches, and a stir fried vegetable dish. The dry mixed liangpi was so gooood. I definitely wanted more. The noodles were long and fun to eat. You order via your cellphone by tablet. The English translation is a bet muddled but they have pictures for most of their dishes. The place is pretty small, it definitely gives me hole in the wall vibes. Their sandwich was two fried savory buns and there was some sort of vegetables, fish tofu and crunchy tofu skin I believed in there as well as a sauce. The signature dish of Xian is the lamb with bum. The dish offered here is definitely Americanized with hot water. It's so far from Xian, you might as well call it any Northern Chinese food. It's a damn shame to call the place Xian Kitchen. The owner should go to Xian and really learn the dishes. Will never return. A die hard fan of Xi'an food, I am happy to say this restaurant makes the cut! The self-ordering system through iPad was an exciting and convenient experience, allowing us to browse through the menu and selections at our own leisure. Prices are decent and portions are very large! Only down-side is that dishes are more on the oily side... - Cold noodle w/ sesame (5/5): my all time favorite! Will have to try w/o sesame next time to compare. - Special hot oil noodle (Biang biang noodle) (5/5): Noodle texture and thickness were on point. May have to say it was the best biang biang noodle I have had! - Braised chicken w/ potato and green pepper (3/5): We finally ventured to try this dish as it is humongous!! Tried this place out on a whim mid-afternoon on a weekend and was quite surprised there were still a couple of tables filled in-store. I believe they also have a patio area for outdoor dining if you so chose. Ordered the Big Plate Chicken with Noodles and it was so good! They don't give a lot of noodles, but the portion sizes are HUGE, definitely can feed 4 people if you add in some noodles on your own. I really like how wide and thin the noodle is so it can grab a lot of the sauce, which has a lot of that Sichuanese peppers flavors. The potatoes are usually my favorite part of this dish, and this place is not exception. The chicken is pretty standard. Overall, I really liked the dish we got and will definitely come back for more. read more

So this place... need I say more, the best tasting Chinese restaurants are the ones with 2/3 stars on Yelp why?! Cause their service is bad in typical Chinese fashion but the food is here is authentic and spicy. It was really hard to communicate with the server, that's how you know the food is good! For the people saying this is the best Xi'an food they've had outside of China, I'm so sorry to hear that. I am not even comparing it to LA but even just the Bay Area, and arguably the very same plaza, has better Xi'an food. That's not to say it's not authentic; just that it's not very good. Thankfully now you can sign up online so you don't have to wait forever to get seated and can plan accordingly. They are still figuring out how the whole online sign-up thing works so be patient with them. Also if you have a small party of 2-3, you might end up having to share a table. Let's get this out of the way. As everyone has said, the service is downright terrible. That's even by Chinese restaurant standards. If you don't have a mandarin speaker in your group, I'd imagine it only gets worse. But hey, if the food is amazing, you can overlook all that, right? Too bad it isn't. We had the special hot oil noodle w/ tomato & egg and spicy noodles with pork. Both were perfectly mediocre and I'm being slightly generous here. You can tell the ingredients in the tomato and egg noodles weren't even fresh. It tasted bland. The spicy noodles with pork wasn't even that spicy. The noodles were soggy. And even worse, the small bits of pork were dry even after being drenched in the soup. There are far better Chinese restaurants in South Bay, even if you are specifically seeking food from Xi'an. We ordered the original flavor, next time will try the spicy one. We also ordered the chives and pork dumplings. Generous portion of stuffings in every dumplings. This is the northern style type of Chinese dumplings, so they have thicker dumpling skin. Taste like the ones in Beijing. Very good. You can select with serving in soup or no soup, and we ordered without soup. Eat with dark vinegar and their house made chili oil. Its really small. The buns (maybe its a pita) coulda been softer. Meat is like a diced/cubed marinated "spicy" pork. I liked it but its def overpriced. Its honestly as small as a single cheeseburger at mcdonalds. Special Hot oil Noodle w/ tomato and eggs: Really good. Wish they spread the spice all around instead of just one lil section though. I was craving for some authentic Xi'an food. There's a place I used to go while living in the city, but haven't found a good one in the South Bay. But now I do! When I saw the review I was a little hesitant, but to my surprise the food is great. Coming from Northwestern China, I can say this place is quite authentic. I ordered cold noodle, stir fry lamb noodle, 3 things chili oil noodle. Everything was well made. And the cold noodle here is almost just like eating at hometown, a lot of sesame paste and chili oil, except they didn't pack much chili oil for take out, but I'd ask next time for more. He said the pita bread soaked in lamb soup is very very similar to the dish he had back in Xian. Almost every time, he ordered this dish. For me, I love the cold noodle with sesame sauce, three chili oils noodle and braised spicy beef noodle soup. Also the cold dishes combination is another favorite by us, you could choose up to three cold dishes, just $6.99. It is really a great deal. Although the menu does not have various choice, you could always choose the classic and popular dishes here. The staff is friendly here. Rice app has 10% discount. Remember that it is cash only. I'm not a fan of spicy food or spicy Chinese food in general, but I think this place literally converted me :0. As stated elsewhere, servers aren't really the best, but they get the job done, and the iPad ordering system is pretty efficient. The food is really tasty though! Cold noodle with sesame: the noodles were really springy and fresh, and the sesame sauce (nutty and creamy) complemented them well. A lil spicy for me and a lil oily, but delicious nonetheless. Appetizers: we got a combo of 3 appetizers which is pretty cool. The potatoes were delicious and refreshing: crunchy, salty, and a lil spicy. Got some cured meat? (was good, but too salty for me) and pig ears (my friend got this since I'm pretty impartial to pig ears). They give a lot of food in this imo and the variety was nice, but probably wouldn't get it again because I'm weak and can't eat that much. Would be good in a group though. Rouburger: pretty tasty! It was really juicyy and fatty, but a bit too salty for me. Also would prefer if the meat distribution was a lil more even since towards the back, it was mainly bread. So much of the reviews are unfair and have their standards too high for a small business like this. Definitely not a 5 star type restaurant but the food is really good, one of the best I've had. While yelpers tend to agree that the food is really good, it seems like most if the flack comes with their experience with the servers; largely due to the language barrier. But if you are understanding and empathetic about the language barrier and actually work together to try and understand each other, it's actually not that bad. Be nice to them, don't give them a hard time for not understanding you. If you give them a hard time, they'll be less willing to work with you. I had a great experience with them, and food is great. Came early today as there's always a line out there tons of ppl waiting for a seat. This is my first time here and definitely will come back again. This place is spicy. Not like "Super Mario with a Fire Flower" spicy. More like "level 3 Yoga Inferno Dhalsim Wins" spicy. The flames are right on the cusp of where it's still enjoyable. Some described the spices to be "numbing," as if someone used your tongue as a pin cushion and then slathered Vics Vapor Rub all over the poke wounds. It might sound like I'm complaining, but I'm really not. I periodically crave their braised beef noodle soup. A smart person once told me that capsaicin is a form of pain, and to crave spicy food is basically your body's desire to grow stronger. Checks out. Xian Kitchen has basically been fulfilling my braised beef noodle craving while simultaneously strengthening my mental fortitude. It was a little strange because the manager kept placing small parties (2, or 3) together on a large round table (the kind that seats 8-12) together so they had to share the space, which made me remember the game Diner Dash and the best way to arrange customers in that game. Anyways, we elected to wait for a standard 4 person table. Menus are just reused folds of paper (for now? I'm assuming) but I appreciated how the menu was concise - makes decisions a lil easier for somebody who's already indecisive. We (4 people) got a little ambitious and ordered: - Cold noodle with sesame (a little bit spicy, but the sauce was so addicting! my favorite dish) - Pita Bread Soaked in Stir Fried Lamb: the waiter told us that this option is a little better than the Pita Bread in Lamb soup, so we elected for this option. The name in English is a little funny, but this is a Xi'an classic and I loved the flavor and texture! Basically kind of like a lot of little gnocchis or balls of dough in a gravy. - Hometown style pork with noodle: pulled pork pieces, bok choy (a little bitter, unsure why but sad :( ) and chewy noodles in spicy sauce - Qishan noodles with grand pork: this one was on the wall as a special, and looks very spicy but really isn't :) - Homestyle rouburger ( very tender, fatty meat in between an Asian-style baked bun) - side dishes: you can go up to the counter and pick 3 for an order; the crisp celery in chili oil is a favorite! We come here whenever we want some spicy hot oil biang biang noodles because it's the closest location to us! This place would be rated slightly higher for us if the quality of noodles were a bit more consistent. Hey here's come the most delicious Xi'an style Chinese food in bay area. It's a new place with modern setup. Though the lines wasn't so terrible these days, but please notice that you could use Yelp to join the waitlist at home and drive there when it's closing to you. The put an iPad outside so you could order your food before going in. These settings really decrease the wait. Ok, I am not here to review their technologies. So, foods: No.1 recommendations: 肉夹馍 (Hometown style pork rouburge). This is your must-order if it's your first time stepping in a Xi'an cuisine place. It's kind of like a burger with pull-pork inside. But the taste and the crunchiness of the bread should be an entirely new experience to anyone who never tried this before. Another Xi'an special is 凉皮(Cold Noodle with Sesame). It's a little spicy. But in a hot day, this could really cool you down and open your appetite. The above two dishes could be sharing by your group. And then everyone of you could get a main course. We tried 羊肉泡馍(Pite Bread Socked in sitr-frying Lamb) and 岐山噪子面(QiShan Noodles with Grand Pork).
