I had bad knee pains and used to go Health Trail on Pell street. They were amazing and provided deep tissue "Tui Na" massages. Tui Na focuses on bones, blood flow and joints which is more of a chinese medical massage. It is not relaxing or comfortable. It has been a challenge finding a place to go to after Health Trail closed down. I've been to many others ever since and today I found Yuan Shi and they are what I've been searching for. I now have bad knees and back pains. I came in on a Sunday and got an hour of the Chinese full body Tui Na. Michael was my masseuse and little dude is strong. He was able to pinpoint all my pain areas and proceeded to roll, press, stretch and kneed it to death. The more squirming I did and wincing from pain, the harder he went. I wanted to stop showing my pain just so he would stop sometimes. But as the guy at Health Trail said, "No pain, No gain". The timer went off after and hour and he continued working my back for another 5 minutes. I really appreciated it, as he knew I was in need of this session. 1 hour was $50, and I tipped $20. He really earned every dollar. Im sore from the bruising but my back pains are relieved right now. I'm considering buying the certificate. 10 sessions for $500 upfront and comes with 3 free massages. When the masseuse showed me that the treatment time had started, they didn't start right away. They got up a couple of times before starting the massage. And I can't remember the guys name but he did an awesome job getting my tensed muscle loose. It hurt like hell while he was doing it but by the end of the massage, I felt like I was in cloud 9. We stumbled across this place and the prices are amazing for the time of the massages. The foot massages felt so good I went to sleep lol. The lady didn't apply too much pressure abut just enough pressure they follow covid protocolad with taking temperatures and hand sanitizing. They soak your feet in this little bowl with hot water then they tell you to lay back, seats are also sanitized before sitting, they focus on each point in each foot. Being Asian, I love very strong Taiwanese style foot massage. Foot massage to me cannot be soft. I just did walk-in and pleasantly surprised how good the masseuse was. He used both a wood stick and his finger to target acu-points. The atmosphere is not something you can relax. The space is very small and the place was packed with customers and masseuses. A foot massage - warm water soak of your feet while you get your back and shoulder massage. Then each foot and leg, starting from the left foot. Mike immediately knew which parts should be focused in his massage routine. He had the optimal strength for each acupuncture spots for me, but the friend I went with couldn't take the acupressure and she asked the masseuse to lower the strength of the shiatsu massage. Top notch place for reflexology, especially when you're out and about and want to drop in. I had Jenny most recently, she was excellent. I also have to agree with everyone else about the awkward tip dynamic here. It's weird, it's awkward and def wish they didn't end like that. I think in this climate, most of us tip what we can, when we can (often higher than 15% or more at times). This is my favorite massage place. No frills. No gimmicks. No lavender scented hot towels. No cucumber water. Just a good massage at an affordable price in a clean place. I typically get the 1 hour body massage which is $45. Sometimes I will get the 1 hour foot massage which includes 30 mins of a back massage for $30. The masseuses are very good and they are able to feel where you have tension and work on those areas. I like that they also have a wide range of pressures. If I'm really sore, I ask them to go lighter. Usually I like to feel my knots getting loose which means good pressure. Walk-ins are welcome but you may have a wait. Weekends are they're busiest times. I would call a couple hours ahead of you want to avoid a wait. Also remember to tip! read more

This review is NOT about the service, which is always excellent. I have been going here for 10 years, and as they didn't take credit/debit cards I always paid in cash, with 30% tip. Yesterday, I found out they raised their prices, so I didn't have enough on me to pay 30% tip. The receptionist ran after me and demanded I pay more for a tip (demanding $10 on a $35 service, which is well over the standard 20%), saying that they now have a credit card machine and I could put it on there. I complied, but honestly they have lost a customer. It's good they raised their price a bit in this difficult time, but tips are gratuitous. It is beyond poor customer service to demand a tip, much less to tell you the amount you have to pay. Maybe they should pay their workers better (they work VERY hard), instead of paying them such poor wages. read more

While the deal was cheap for 1hr at $38, the service wasn't that great compared to other massage parlors within the same price. Chairs were uncomfortable you couldn't even lean back in them and when they massage your upper back you had to sit on an ottoman instead of laying down, it was unusual and uncomfortable. For $30, my friends and I each had massage package A - 20 minutes of back, neck, shoulders, and 40 minutes of foot massage. This is classic Chinese reflexology - they press certain pressure points to relieve tension all throughout your body. This is a hard massage - not for the faint of heart, though you can tell them to reduce pressure if it's too much. The whole place is also very clean. My only small complaint was the use of paper tools instead of regular towels throughout the service, though that does make it very clean. My partner also commented on how resourceful they were with the paper towels - he was wearing jeans and they used them to roll them up and protect them from the lotion. Would definitely come back! My friend and her family have been coming to this place for years, often making multiple stops on every trip they take to NYC. I finally made my way to Yan May this past weekend and have to say it was a terrific value and a thorough massage. I walked in around 4 and only had to wait around 5 minutes to be seen for an hour massage. At $30 for a 40 minute foot massage and 20 minute back massage, it was an absolute steal. Yes, the environment is not posh or even attempting to be anything more than bare bones, but the masseuse was all-in and really worked out any kinks. I think some people might find portions of the session painful since they really get in there, but I enjoyed it and felt extremely relaxed afterwards. My only complaint was that getting wiped down at the end with rough paper towels was abrasive on my skin and uncomfortable - perhaps I'll request to skip it next time. I really love this place. Okay, so for some context I literally love massages and the spa. I visit a wide range of spas ranging from low cost in and out to high price full experience spas. This one falls in the low cost/in and out category for me but the services are great and the masseuses are great. I literally had the best full body massage ever here. Including my expensive "top of the line" experiences! In addition to the actual service being great. I always receive great customer service (which is so important to me) and they are very accommodating, for example today I had on jeans and my pants didn't roll up very high. My practitioner offered me a pair of shorts so that he is able to give me the full experience and I really appreciated that . They specialize in reflexology which I love (I try to get a foot massage once a month, and you should too. More if possible lol). So yeah, If you're in the area and want to treat your body to a nice little treat. I giving the place a visit also pay attention to the areas that are giving you pain during the foot massage and ask questions and/or look at a foot map so you can see what body part that particular area is connected to. I moved from NYC 6 years ago, and whenever I go back, Yan May is on my list of where I MuSt go! Fantastic no frills service. I'm a massage and bathhouse addict, and truth be told, sometimes I feel as relaxed after getting Yan May reflexology done as I do after a 90 minute fancy massage elsewhere. It sometimes gets a little irksome when new customers are loud in the reception/massage areas, but people soon catch on to the atmosphere. Oh! Do make a reservation. Learned that lesson a couple times, and I think they're still cash only. The pricing is so affordable! Please tip your therapist well. You will find out how much they deserve it if you try them out. I haven't had a single bad experience/therapist there yet. Oh and I highly recommend the reflexology, but as far as full body massage, I wouldn't say that's their strong suit.
