yanagi sushi is a stable as for japanese food. great quality and great food! as alot of people have mentioned it's very very consistent! wish there was specials to make us wow. the late night specials really is attractive with the same quality but great price! my favorite is the hamachi on the cheaper side, but the toro is the fricken bomb! charged by the piece, man it's so worth it! we usually drink way too much sake and eat way too much food. but it's never a disappointment when we come here. staff is friendly and food is great. it's always busy on the weekends and weekday dinner times. parking is great and i'm glad it's valet because after a bottle of the huge bottle sake, it's awesome not needing to reverse lol overall it's a great place, great food, and you always get what you pay for! read more

Had the omakase sushi special for $35. Everything was tasty except for the toro. I think I've been spoiled since my first taste of toro was at Morimotos in Waikiki and the otoro there melted in my mouth. For the price though, that definitely can't be beat. Huge platter as well. Have been here numerous times and still love the taste of most everything on the menu. Next time though, I think I'll just select what I want. :) read more

This place is overrated. The food is comparable to a Japanese fast food. The service is horrible. The last two times I went to Yanagi they messed up my orders. The funny thing is that once the waiter took my order I never saw him again. I had to flag down another waiter/waitress just to tell them my order was wrong and had to ask for a water refill. Everything was OK. You get quite a bit for your money, if you order the dinner specials, but don't expect everything to taste great... just lots of food. The most hilarious part is that they have valet parking, a literally the guy parks your car right where you stop it; perhaps it is necessary for the busy times. Went to Yanagi Sushi or the first time in eight years and had a great night again. We went early 6pm and pulled right into the free valet area and received a friendly welcome, entered the restaurant and was seated immediately at the sushi bar. We were approached by our waitress and had Miso and waters almost instantly. Then the sushi blitzkrieg began, we started with a reverse California roll (modified rainbow roll) and after a great 2 hours we ended with the last two pieces of Toro we could get down, then we were done... We truly enjoyed everything we ate. Very consistent... Ok a few things, if your at the sushi bar, beware it's a limited menu, not the same as the one you get when seated at a table. Although the sushi is consistent, the Sushi Chef's personalities are not as consistent. We got the Portuguese looking guy who spoke Japanese but wasn't very friendly, while the bar across the way had a very funny and personable Chef. Role of the dice I guess. Over all we really enjoyed our selves, and will go back... Enjoy... TIPS: Go early, and if not make sure to call, If you want more than sushi you have to get a table, 10:30pm to 2am is almost half price read more

Two Hands down with 2 feet down. I keep forgetting to check in here as I came more than 10 times probably. I love their happy hours after 10pm. I admired the best of all, the famous Oyster Shooters! No kidding, any other japanese restaurants, they didn't have them and I was really surprised! San Diego have plenty of there, almost everywhere. I still need to explore more restaurants though. Yanagi sushi is alright. I can't say i am extremely impressed with this restaurant at all. I do like their combination meal options, but I think a lot of their meal options are way overpriced for the quality and the portion (especially their chef combination sashimi and sushi plates). There has to be better places for amazing sushi rolls in Honolulu. (I have a pretty high standard for sushi rolls, taste, texture, and of course portion.) I definitely would not come here for their sushi, but for their cooked food I would consider it. In terms of the restaurant itself, the several times I've been here with family, Yanagi Sushi is always packed. They do have group private rooms which i like, but sometimes servers forget to come check into the private rooms for water or tea refills. I think out of the three times i've been here, what made the biggest impression on me that would make me come back, is their misoyaki butterfish and their eel options. I do want to try different things on their menu, but their prices are pretty unreasonable. I just want to point out, that for the volume of customers that frequent Yanagi, I was surprised and unimpressed by the taste, texture, quality and portion sizes. I'm pretty iffy on coming back, but I might consider it depending on the circumstances. Still looking for my go-to sushi restaurant. read more

Basic Japanese food. Good for drinks or sake with friends. Open late. Good cuts of fish :) waiters are super slow and pretty unprofessional. We were eating around 9 pm which I guess must be their slow time ? And they were like breaking something down really loudly behind the wall next to us. Came here a couple months ago with friends visiting from the mainland. They wanted to eat good sushi and this was the only place I could think of that was delicious and wouldn't break the bank. We arrived at 5:30 and as I pulled in the parking lot, I realized I forgot to make a reservation... For a party of 8... But they were so kind and accommodating. They told us if we could be done by 7:00 (or 7:30, can't remember but it was enough time), we could get a table. When the time came, they didn't even rush us out. My nigiri sushi, hubby's sashimi trio and my sons tonkatsu and grilled salmon were all delicious! Our friends enjoyed their sushi rolls as well. Will come back again! read more

I probably come here like 2-3 times a month after work during happy hour lol. Can never go wrong with this place, especially during happy hour. The servers are all really friendly, professional, and attentive. I really appreciate their honesty when we ask them what they think of a certain item. Service is always really quick and food comes out in no time. They seem to have to manually write and calculate each check so allow time for them to bring you your check when you ask for it, especially if it's busy. read more

We have some great places here in the bay area.. but oh Yanagi! The fish is so fresh and tasty. My favorites are hamachi and sake wherever I go, and here it was the best. I've been waiting to come to this Yanagi Sushi for a long time. Last time I came to Hawaii I came in and walked out because there were no tables available. On the wall there are many pictures of celebrities which reminded me of Benihana that I used to go to. The restaurant has an old feel. For some reason keeps on reminding me of Karate Kid. Is that racist? I ordered several nigiri (saba, hamachi, and salmon) and a nabeyaki udon. The salmon nigiri was not too good. It felt dry and had a piece of seaweed that wrapped it which made it a no go. The other two pieces of sushi were average, I was expecting a lot more. The nabeyaki udon was very oily and again felt like I could have had better elsewhere. Probably am not going to come back again. read more

Great specials after 10:30pm parking sucks cause it's "valet" but after a certain time the valet boys come around & ask if any of the keys in their hand are yours & when you tell them which one is yours, they stand there waiting for tip when they never even bring your car to you or open your door! Have had sushi and izakaya here before but never dinner. Don't know what took me so long! This place has the best complete dinners! You can pick 2 or 3 entree choices including butterfish, tempura, sashimi, and other great choices for under $26! Dinner comes with appetizer, salad, and ono ice cream. What a deal and it was alllllllllll good! Portions were large and service was excellent. My gf and her mom both had the Chirashi Deluxe and it was a work of art! A must have if you love sashimi. Yanagi is bomb...legit...one of the best places to eat in Honolulu and not touristy at all, which is nice to get away from the bustling shopping areas and overcrowded beaches (I prefer the north shore hands down). My gf had never been to Hawaii before, so I took her to Honolulu for a day, spent most of the day on the beaches, eating at Dukes, and seeing the sights. Wanted to grab a bite to eat before heading back to the North Shore, but didn't want to get stuck eating at the touristy places (Senor Frogs, etc). Yanagi popped up and we were pretty excited. Parking was a breeze, plenty of street parking and even valet if you want. Walked into the place...needless to say it was PACKED. Luckily, right when we walked in a couple left the sushi bar, because the lady looked at us and said "reservation? no reservation???" with an incredible look on her face, and we were saved by the sushi bar. Nice hot towel to wipe off the beach / outside and freshen up for dinner. Getting attention is a bit tough, they had 2 sushi chefs, and we had to wait a while for them to finish the regular restaurant dishes and the regulars at the bar, we got the quick look over to us about 10 mins after we sat, and ordered as quick as we could. Spicy tuna, salmon, tuna roll, eel, and tamago. Nice touch on the banana leaf. Watched with expert precision as he sliced and rolled up everything. The sashimi here is top notch, mainly because they do it the right way: giving you a nice huge slice of fish, and a small amount of rice. Know how in pictures the sashimi lines up with the rice underneath? Not here, you get a huge piece of fish...and its delicious and fresh. The salmon was buttery and beautiful, the rice was just a hint of sweet and packed nicely. Tuna was delicious, with just the hint of wasabi. Rolls were all well balanced, not too much rice, perfect amount of fish, and not overly packed with veggies. Even the tamago was huge (my gf was surprised how large the egg piece was and it almost put us over the top). Eel was sweet and bone-free, delicious. Lots of regulars here, as the owner lady seems to know most of the faces who walk in, and gives them a lot of special treatment. I saw people sitting down while chatting, while she gave a server a nod to pour wine for them. Seems like a cool neighborhood spot for locals. Tons of pictures of celebrities and seemingly normal people taking pictures with the owners. Best part? We filled up with sushi and rolls, ordered pretty much what we wanted, and it was less than $30. I couldn't believe it....the prices were really amazing for top notch sushi. Even some of the chef specials (where they give you a variety of sashimi pieces) were under $30 each plate. Definitely a legit ass price. Go to yanagi if you are craving sushi. Go there to see locals enjoying good fresh seafood, solid service, and a cool atmosphere. read more
