This place is good for bringing people who are new to Chinese food or are timid about Asian food in general. The service is Western style and they really cater to the Western audience. Went here for lunch on a Friday. The place is very cute. Traditional Chinese American restaurant. Like the ones I'm used to. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. We ordered the Yang Chow Fried Rice, Sweet and Sour, and Cashew Chicken. The Fried rice was delicious, it's my favorite. The Sweet and Sour pork was crispy the sauce was tasty. This is the best Chinese place I've ever been to! (I don't really go to a lot of Chinese places besides Panda Express, but still, the sentiment's there) This place is decorated nice, with real table clothes and a funny little fake tree. They've even got a wall of fame of sorts in the front with pictures of the owner with various celebs who have partaken in their delicious food such as Conan, Ron Howard, Drew Barrymore, Magic Johnson, and Richard Simmons. They start you off with tea! No questions asked just bam, here is some yummy tea and ice water right off the bat. Can't go wrong with that in my book. We got some spring rolls, chicken lo mien, orange chicken, and orange beef. I loved the spring rolls and the chicken lo mien! The others I'm not a huge fan of in the first place, so I didn't try them. My fellow eaters did though and were not huge fans of the orange chicken. It's so not Chinese food and it's embarassing to say that I actually went here, but their Slippery Shrimp is just too good! It just sweet and sour and the shrimp are so crunchy even with the sauce on them - how do they get them that crunchy?!? My grandma, as well as my mom and I, really liked it too (but she had an American palate). My dad does not like it but he would have to take my grandma, mom and me when my grandma wanted to go. Yang Chow is straight good Chinese food. They got several location in China Town, Pasadena and Canoga Park. Their Mongolian beef, house special fried rice and slippery shrimp is the da bomb! Their Mongolian beef is just so tender and good, most places I ate at its either too dry or not enough taste but this place just knocks it out of the park. The portion for each dish is huge, so if your coming here on a date, or with your significant other or a friend I would recommend just getting their lunch special than going with their entree plates. If you have a big party of more than 3-4 people than I would recommend going with the entree plates which is more worth it. This one in Pasadena is really mellow. It's not as crowded as the one in China town but this location service is a bit more personable and quicker. read more

Perfect dinner for a cool LA evening. We got egg rolls, pork fried rice and Szechuan Chicken. The chicken was nice crispy and had a very flavorful sauce. The staff were very attentive and nice. First and last time here. Service: Pretty bad. The female hostess, possibly manager, was not welcoming. It was my first time there so I asked what were their specialties. She took the paper menu and just circled the entire "House Special Section" which had about 20 items. I asked which vegetables were good and once again she just pointed at the vegetable section...once again, not one recommendation and she didn't even look at me because she was so focused with calculating bills. For a restaurant with all these Zagat Awards and photos with celebrities, and not to mention HIGH prices, a little customer service would have been appreciated, especially towards someone who mentioned it was their first time there. The Food: Shrimp Lo Mein - Very average, oily, not enough flavor and shrimp was soggy. Slippery Shrimp - Probably the best thing I ordered but it was nothing special. It was like something from Panda Express. Red Sauce Bean Curd/Tofu - Nothing special. Lacked flavor. Sweet & Sour Pork - Average...pork was not fatty which was good but lacked the tangy sour flavor from the sauce. Pork was a little hard too. Each dish was about $13-14. I am a true believer of you pay for what you get but I didn't get much. The food was very average and not worth the prices. If you just head down to Arcadia which is only 5 minutes from East Pasadena, you can find a lot better Chinese Food with better prices. This place is a gimmicky and catered to westerners. I was first introduced to this place by my cousin a few years ago, and I have been a fan ever since. Their slippery shrimp and szechuan beef are my two faves. I also love their hot n sour soup. Every time we have out of town visitors we taken them to Yang Chow and they all have raved about it. We Specifically came here to try their Slippery shrimp. This location is better than the one in Chinatown. Parking piece of cake here & free. Service is attentive enough. Food is decent albeit greasy but restaurant is so poorly managed. On busy nights like Christmas, they give way more reservations than they have tables, and create a horrendous atmosphere where people are practically duking it out over tables. We waited 2 hours one year and then had the exact same issue the next year. It's obnoxious and there's no reason for it. Two stars because the food was okay, but the service was ABSOLUTE GARBAGE! Our server was very rude and short with us and we had to repeat our order several times and they still did not get it right the first time around. We had to ask several times to get refills on our drinks and we were only able to get one refill. The woman that was "serving" us didn't not come back to our table once after the food was dropped except to bring the check which she basically stood at the table waiting for us to put our card in the thing like we were going to try to run out of there without paying or something. Although I might be in the minority, I prefer this location to the one in Chinatown. The longest we've ever waited for a table is ten minutes. Service is prompt and friendly. Order slippery shrimp (of course), yang chow fried rice, spicy dumpling, green bean with minced pork, sautéed spinach, white rice (charge per person), and chow mein. Everything is pretty typical in flavor, set-up, and taste but the slippery shrimp was the most popular dish; we had to order a double dose. The less favorite was the spicy dumpling; seemed like purely vinegar and chile sauce, nothing to write home about. For a party of 9 ppl with 8 dishes it came out to $15 (incl tip) per tummy filled person and left overs. I'm coming back. Only real Con is... Big fan of Yang Chow, some of the best and most delicious Chinese food to be had. What really took me aback at Yang Chow is the service: impeccable. Absolutely friendly and delightful staff, it could not have been better. It's not very often that you find a restaurant with simply stellar waitstaff. And this is a major plus. Just A+ all around. Slippery shrimp is a must-have item, the pork pan fried dumplings were delicious, Yang Chow fried rice was fantastic, green beans with minced work were juicy and cooked just right and the beef lo-mein was very good (although pork lo-mein was probably a better decision). And there's no 2 hour wait like most places these days, which is simply ridiculous and ludicrous. Will never understand people who stand around for 120 minutes waiting to eat. I just wanted some Hot & Sour soup. I thought I should order egg rolls with it. An order of each came to $18 dollars. That would have been okay, but it wasn't very good. The egg rolls were just gross. Soaking in grease, Dripping. They were lightly crispy on the outside but the inside had only a hint of veggies, and lots of mushy goo!
