Very fast and friendly service and the food is so good! I'm from California and the sushi out there is unparalleled (except in Japan I guess lol). It took me months to find a sushi place that met my standards and this place was it! They have no indoor dining at all currently and it's been this way for months which is fine with me. Every business has the right to decide for themselves. But they stay busy every time I drive by which is often because I live right across the street. One of my new go to sushi spots in Utah! How can I say no to $1 nigiri/sashimi and half off sushi rolls?! Their fish is surprisingly fresh for the price. I usually order the salmon, yellowtail, eel, white tuna, scallop, and the executive roll. Out of all the rolls I've tried so far, the executive is still my favorite! I've also tried their egg drop soup, wonton soup, and house fried rice which were all pretty good! This saddens me to have to write, but I dont want others to have to experience it, so here it is. I realize that things have changed during Covid-19, but the impact at Yi Sushi, has been incredibly bad, here's why: Pickup is Awful: They are only doing pickup take-out orders now, which is maybe the only positive thing I have to say here, but they are at least doing that. That said, they are doing it really poorly. They have blocked off their entryway so that the area to pick up/order your food, is just their tiny little entryway as you are walking in. Anyone to visit this place will be able to picture it when I say the whole restaurant now available to the public is just in the tiny space between the first door, and the 2 entry/exit doors. I'd be surprised if it were 6 feet in diameter. So anyone waiting for their food or wanting to order, If practicing social distancing, must stand outside. Long waits especially if you didnt call ahead: I ordered 6 rolls and was told it would be ready in 20 mins. I showed up 25 mins later and after awkwardly paying through their makeshift window, I was told they would call me when it was ready. I told her the reason I called ahead was so I didnt have to wait, and she just closed her window at me. It was too hot outside and I wanted to wait for the food in the ordering area, which kept others from coming in because ther room is tiny and ppl want to social distance. Luckily my food became ready right as this began, so it didnt become an issue, but it would be a painful wait if I hadnt have called ahead. Price Hike (50% off isnt what it used to be): As I was paying, the total felt really high, and unusual since I had ordered what we usually get and expected a certain price. AFTER they ran my card, they gave me the hiked total, pointing out the signs on the wall (sloppily scrawled sharpie I didnt even notice it was so high and out of my way) indicating the cost of food having gone up during the Covid pandemic, because of the pandemic. Ok, I can buy that, but this was now about $13 higher than my regular order, pushing it into a different tier of sushi for the price, of which this sushi just isn't and never will be... Yi Sushi was always mediocre sushi, but that was ok because it was cheap, but now it isnt cheap and it isnt any better... in fact that leads me to: The Food's Worse: Like I said, this place was always mediocre sushi, but for the price, it was a good deal. Surprisingly, despite the price increase to continue bringing in good products, my opinion is that the food has gotten MUCH worse... From the cucumber slices being half the roll at almost a dime size in diameter (and there are usually 2 of these per roll), to the rubbery and questionable bad taste of their clearly fake crab meat (It was always fake, yes, but the rubbery taste and texture it has now... it doesnt even taste like imitation crab), or the rock hard & overly deep fried tempura shrimp in the roll (of which isnt obviously hard until you chip a tooth on it), all the way to the thing they raised prices for in the cuts of fish meat being just all around sub par (and likely frozen and thawed by the taste).... ALL of it was just worse and not good enough to even justify the older cheaper price, let alone this inflated new one. Look, I will pay higher prices for great sushi. This is why I took a chance and didn't demand a refund when I saw how much more expensive the food was. That said, what Yi sushi gave me today was not at all "great", and doesnt even come close to "good". I used to be a regular orderer here, but unfortunately wont be again, which really saddens me. You know what? I'm going to say it: I love this place. Granted, I have to wear a mustache and oversized sunglasses so no one sees me, as my sushi roller friends would disown me that I frequent one of these 'discount' sushi places, but when I am looking to get full on sushi on the cheaps, this is the place! For 5 rolls and 6 pieces of nigiri (Don't worry, I was with a friend!), the bill was $32. WHAT?!?!?! And it was good! Was it the quality of Takashi? Well, no no no, lets not be silly! But it was good... the Sweetheart roll was the winner for me (maybe I am biased, being that my day of birth is Valentine's Day!), it comes out in the shape of a heart (cheesy... but cute) and is packed with awesomeness... it's enormous! The service... questionable. But again, for the price, you can treat me like I have leprosy and you want nothing to do with me. Just give me my food and eventually the bill, and I am happy! The wait for good is a little slow but our server Ailin, took care of us and made sure we had our teas and waters filled. I think I have enough of Yi. We decided on Yi again for lunch yesterday. I got myself the salmon skin roll, the orange roll, and the general Tso's chicken from the chinese menu and the roommate, white tuna, kani salmon, tuna avocado, Philadelphia, eel cucumber, and tempura shrimp rolls. The salmon skin and eel were disappointing this time. I've noticed that the salmon skin here is very inconsistent. It ranges from amazing, grossly undercooked, or borderline burnt. This time was grossly undercooked. The eel roll was paper thin piece of eel and was mostly cucumber. It did not even taste average. The kani salmon, tuna avocado, and orange rolls were great and had a lot of fish/filling. The general Tso's chicken was extremely sweet and the sauce was way too thick. They only give you a small bowl of rice to go with it, which is impractical. I hardly touched it and had the rest to-go. and then............. 2 AM this morning, I was woken by a horrible stomach ache and had the go. I was having cold sweat and fatigue. Spent 30 minutes in the restroom and I think my toilet needed an exorcism afterwards. Whatever got flushed down there was demonic. (sorry about the mental image lol) My roommate argues that it is the Chinese food so I took the risk and ate the rest of the general Tso's chicken this morning (It actually wasn't bad over a generous amount of rice) and nothing happened so it was the sushi for sure. All in all, Yi's sushi freshness and quality isn't consistent and who makes your rolls makes a huge difference in rice to fish ratio. I'll be taking my money elsewhere. read more

I think this place just opened for really short time, I saw their ads on the newspaper for $2 rolls and 50% off (just like red ginger), so I gave it a try on thanksgiving day. I was satisfied by the experience there. It's on the east side of state street and it was kind of hard to find the restaurant, because their sign was rhombic shape with very small words on it. They have good off street parking on the side of the building, when I first walked in , it feels very like Red Ginger on 33rd State st, I feel it might be the same owner. The inside is very clean and new. many decorations. They have Nigiri for $1 and regular sushi roll for $2, And all other special rolls at the price from around $5 to $13 plus 50% off. I asked if they have beers, and waitress told me only softdrink now, even though there are sake and beer on the first page of the menu. (I think they might be still trying to get the alcoholic beverage permit from the government. I got three special rolls; Vegas, Play Boy and Spider, one spicy tuna roll, one California roll, and three kind of Nigiris ; shrimp, tune, and salmon. along with one coke, check came around $25, what a value. the Spicy tuna roll ($5 x 50% off) I got was good, There was lots of tuna in it, probably the most fish in a simple roll I've ever seen. they need to put a little more rice around it. I will go back for their simple roll And Nigiri was surprisingly good except the shrimp. The tuna and salmon are good size and fresh. I'm very happy to what I got for $1 nigiri. Special rolls are good size and well made just like red ginger. I would say it's better than red ginger, and I hope they will keep their quality up for long run. It might just because they just opened now so they are serving such a great value sushis. All in all it was great dining experience there, watching Two and a Half men, listening to good old country music and eating some value Sushi at a Chinese restaurant. If you are in south part of Salt Lake and don't want to wait in line at Red Ginger for 30min, this is the place to go. No mapo tofu, but REALLY good wonton soup with a delicious broth and pork-only filled wontons (how I prefer it - w/out shrimp), a weak cucumber salad (not a traditional sunomono) and decent sushi. Could be a language barrier or just terrible service. I've gone here multiple times and the food is consistently good, their service however... is consistently terrible. The waitresses wont recommend anything if you ask and most of the time they just take your order and don't talk or make eye contact. Perhaps that's apart of their culture also. I've been to several Sushi restaurants and even worked at one for a few years. Sushi to me is supposed to be a fun experience, especially if you sit at the bar. The price is great, all their rolls are "half off" and dont seem to be marked up in price, just to discount. You can generally get two high end rolls for $12. This was our first visit to Yi Sushi. We had gone to their former sister restaurant Red Ginger many times. We were extremely satisfied. Upon arriving we were greeted and seated immediately. Offered drinks by our server a new girl named Shrry. She was very attentive. We ordered 4 rolls and a beef yakiudon . The Vegas roll was crispy and delicious. The Salt Lake roll which we have never heard of was surperb. The Spider roll was one of the best we have had. The spicy tuna was great. The beef in the noodles was tender and full of flavor. We should have stopped there but no...we ordered 2 more rolls. The Samurai roll was spicy and tasty. The Sunrise roll was almost too spicy but still very tasty. Shrry kept our drink glasses full and empty dishes clear. After our meal Angel the manager came over and chatted and asked our names and introduced herself. We got 6 rolls 2 too many noodles and drinks with tax and tip it was $49.00 We will be going back soon. This was such a wonderful dinner. read more

Went here on Saturday with my family for dinner. It was quite busy and crowded. We ordered sashimi, Eel Avocada Roll, Sake Avocado Roll, Seafood Udon, Naruto Roll,... All the food here was cheap and so good. My favorite one is the Egg drop soup and Sake avocado roll. But I don't recommend the Naruto Roll, it was kinda weird with cucumber which I don't like. Finally sat down and ordered drinks and sushi. Overall our experience was pretty positive. Service was a little slow but have to take into consideration how busy they were. The sushi rolls were all to our liking except the fried "Devil" one which was too doughy for us. Also tried a few other things including: Nigiri: salmon, tuna, and unagi. Unagi was our favorite of the three. It was just so full of flavor! Rolls: tiger, volcano, spicy tuna, and eel. All were good but tiger was our absolute favorite. She brought us out a roll and said it was the Christmas Roll. As I am eating she comes back and says the roll is actually an Angel's Roll and not the Christmas. Because of her mistake, I figured I wouldn't be charged right? Wrong. She charged me for a roll that I didn't even order on top of my correct roll I wanted. Not my fault! Quality: The quality of the food was mediocre. The rolls fall apart and are not consistent in filling/size. The Mt. Fuji rolls photo looks delicious and it ended up being completely different....it is a shape of a square instead of a roll. Kind of funky. I wouldn't be surprised if I came home with food poisoning. It's discounted sushi that's still 50% off all rolls and nigiri and sashimi are $1 a piece. For $27 before tip, my friend and I got 2 soups, gyoza, crab wontons, 2 pieces of salmon and 2 rolls so it's definitely a good value. Is it the very best? Of course not... But it's good for what it is, and I would gladly choose this spot over the other half off joints in the valley. Pleasantly surprised! Food was very good, prices even better. But,service lacks terribly. We waited an awkwardly long amount of time to be seated (Almost walked out). Again, for server to take order, then again, for food. 1 1/2 hours..for a weekday lunch, when not busy sucks. We went around lunch at 1:00 pm. Not extremely busy, just enough to encourage us to stAy. The main attraction of this place is cheap delicious sushi rolls. If you are looking for authentic Japanese sushi like you see in the movies or food channel, this is not exactly the best place. The nigiri sushi here are acceptable but they don't taste fresh and the size is rather small. Plus, most of their sushi chefs and servers are of Chinese origins so if you close your eyes while eating and listen, you would think you are in Beijing. But that doesn't mean you have to completely give this place a miss. First, they serve good sushi rolls. I like to think they are more Americanized sushi because if you tell the Japanese that we put mayonnaise or dressings on their rolls, they will probably get a heart attack. That's like eating burgers with wasabi. Just doesn't sound right. But having been here long enough, I have started to appreciate this type of sushi. I mean, why stick on what's right and what's wrong as long as your palate is happy, right? I guess that is why the chefs here are overly creative with their sushi rolls menu. They seriously have a lot of varieties - rolls with raw fish, some with crunchy nuts and vegetables, cooked tempura shrimp and grilled ells - every combination imaginable. Second, the sushi here is dirt cheap. They have 50% off sushi rolls and 1 dollar nigiri/sashimi all the time. They even have it printed on the menu which made me wonder, why not reduce the main price once and for all? Some restaurants just work in mysterious ways. The service is alright. You can get a table pretty fast but you do have to wait quite a while to get your orders, especially when the place is crowded but I feel that the food is worth the wait. Decent atmosphere, service was extremely fast (we walked in, sat down, ordered, got our food within 10 minutes!) Was a bit apprehensive because the prices seemed too low, but after trying the sushi rolls, I felt that for the price it was pretty good quality. The best roll I had was the Executive. It has lemon, so it was pretty interesting and refreshing. Other rolls was normal, didn't make much of an impression. The deep fried devils roll tasted kind of oily and heavy so I definitely won't be getting that again next time. Our waitress frequently asked us how everything was. They give you the rolls as they are made, we had like 5 minutes wait time between each roll, which was pretty fast in my opinion even though they seemed a little! Excellent sushi at great prices. The only problem is the service. I am used to ordering directly from the chef when I sit at the bar as this is part of the reason you actually SIT at the bar. Instead they make you trip the server to order leaving the traditional notion of Japanese fast food in the slow food category. The pieces were $1 each and of good size plus were very tasty. Added a Miso soup as well which was delicious. All their rolls are 1/2 off the menus listed prices so I went ahead and ordered a Rainbow and Unagi (eel) roll. Hard to finish everything by myself as portions were satisfying. Best prices on sushi anywhere in SLC area. Always very busy. They sell so much sashimi that they can't help but have fresh product and a large selection. Their rolls are well plated but nothing to fancy and the rice is often packed to light so it falls apart, but they have large portions for the price and it always taste good. Wine selection is terrible. The servers are always extremely busy so occasionally you have to wait longer then you may like, but they do try very hard to serve and most are very kind and respectful. My son and I love coming in for a huge sushi/sashimi meal that would break the bank anywhere else. We sit at the sushi bar and watch sports on the two TVs. I want to give this place 4 stars because of the above issues, but my son believes it should be 5 so that's what I will change it to. read more

I've been a regular for years, love the price, quality is usually good. I mostly like the simple stuff because it's hard to mess up. NOTE!!! HOT AND SOUR SOUP: make it taste like something! It's like you took hot and sour from a different restaurant and diluted it with beef stock and extra mushrooms. Not as sour or hot as I usually get from places. ALSO NOTE!!! Don't sleep on the hand rolls, they're cheap and if you order a hand roll and like a standard tuna roll it comes it a little margarita glass! No you're not near water, but honestly that doesn't matter when the sushi is 50% off. There's not many places where you can get two Philadelphia rolls and a Vegas roll for under $10.
