We really enjoyes the food. Great little family restaurant. The sweet & sour pork and fried shrimp are my favorite.

We tried for the first time tonight and were glad that we did. Nothing fancy inside by any means but very good food , fast service and generous portions. The egg foo young was very good and the sweet and sour chicken was the best I ever had! My husband loved the hot and sour soup and believe me he is not easy to please!! Had the chicken and broccoli lunch special, which came with soup, a spring roll and fried rice for $6.50. What a bargain! Food was great except I didn't like the hot and sour soup. After reading Carmen's poor review I felt motivated to give my own personal review even though its been over two months since we ate at Yi's Wok. Like Carmen I also grew up in the Bay area and had the pleasure to eat at local (not tourist frequented) Cantonese style restaurants in both Chinatown S.F. and Chinatown Oakland. All I know is what tastes good. If Carmen ate at more local establishments she would be use to some grease on the floor. As a patron and as a retired State Health Inspector, I must say the better food was typically at the local and and not along the main streets that catered to the tourists. The first time at Yi's, I right away noticed the food was not as greasy as I found with the previous operators that moved to another location. In fact, Mrs Yi Chan and her husband are the original owners at this location and owning the building, decided to come back after the others vacated the premises. We had three dishes and fried rice. Two of the three were great whilst the third was just ok. This is common in all Chinese restaurants. You have to experiment to find the dishes you like. Almost all Chinese restaurants in the US serve food from a variety of Provinces in China; Canton, Hunan, Fujan and of course Sichuan. So the dishes that excel in taste and presentation are dishes the cook knows best from his own region. I was looking forward to lunch here after reading the Yelp reviews.....unfortunately the food was not good and customer service was disheartening. We won't be returning. I ordered a dish that didn't taste right so I kindly asked for the dish my husband had and offered to pay the difference. The server said no and walked away. I hate writing negative reviews, but I also hate spending my money on bad food. The building is dated and 'sticky' feeling. The soup was burnt and when our table commented on it we were told it was the spice. I understand my standards for Chinese Food are abnormally high for an Oregonian (since I grew up skipping school to have lunch in China Town SF). But this meal was unpalatable. We ate here for the 1st and I was not impressed. Our pork fried rice looked like they had used left over rice to make it. The rice was very dry and looked more like couscous then rice. The prawns in the house low mein were mushy. Literally pushed one with my tongue against the roof of my mouth and it disintegrated. They were visiting with people when we walked in and they quickly took our order but then their company kept walking in and out of the kitchen before finally leaving through the kitchen. You can be certain that someone is paying attention to detail when a most excellent tasting tea, arriving instantly upon being seated, is served at a Perfect temperature. The wonton soup very tasty, including an unusual addition of perfectly cooked sliced vegetables. "Authentic" lo mien simply delightful! General Tao's chicken sautéed with onions and water chestnuts in 'exciting' sauce... and to be noted, Not deep fried. Yi's Wok deserves attention and patronage. Most Excellent!! read more

positive reviewers are probably business employees. I went to this place when it was Chan's and it was decent. Chans has moved out and it is now doing better than ever where the old Dairy Queen used to be. My wife and I went here to try something different and we ordered two different dishes. I had a vegetarian dish and she had a chicken dish. Both dishes tasted very unusually disgusting and rancid. Almost like they had been fried in bad oil. The food also tasted like it was old or leftover way past its shelf life. I honestly felt like I shouldn't have even had to pay for the food it was that bad. Service was mediocre at best. Been searching for a good place and frankly most of the chinese places are as bad if not worse than safeway chinese and i pretty much gave up even wasting money on trying new places. Yi's looks to be a family business. The hot and sour soup was tasty, tea served served with crackers which always crack me up but even they were good, not the stale saltines most places hand out but i always eat when im starving. Hot tea served without asking. The kung pao chicken, broccoli beef, fried rice, fried shrimp, eggrolls, were all yummy and piping hot. Orange chicken isnt covered in heavy batter like most places and the sauce was wonderful with big pieces of the cooked orange peel you could see. I think my favorite thing was the food was SO flavorful without needing to add chili sauce or soy sauce. The servings were SUPER generous giving us lots of leftovers, even for big eaters like us. ON top of all that the prices were great, so you dont have to break the bank to treat yourself to a night off cooking. This place is exactly what weve been searching for. Soooo happy Yi's Wok is open! I remember getting pork fried rice from this place back when it used to be Chan's. It's still just as good: hot, fluffy, and delicious! That, and the Szechuan beef are my go-tos. Some of the other dishes I saw the waitress bringing out looked like they might be worth trying, too--maybe I'll branch out at some point.
