Although the side dishes may be on the smaller side, there are so many that the meal is worth it. They have a wide selection of fresh sashimi and Sushi. We came for dinner and it was SO NOT WORTH IT! We should have realized something was amiss when we asked the waitress for recommendations, and she answered "oh there's nothing really that special." RED FLAG!! But we were already seated, and tired, and ready to just dig in to something - even if it was something not that special. Most of their menu consists of their Set Dinner Plates, and it's more worth it to order those than a la carte. We ordered the Unagi Zen, the Butterfish, and the Yellowtail Collar as set plates. Called @ 4:45pm the day of for reservation but they where fully booked. The lady that picked up said they could seat us (party of 2) if we get there by 5:30pm and be finished by 6:30pm. My first time checking this place out. I just got Sushi for lunch today. This place was definitely happening and was busy for a Tuesday afternoon. I believe the Sushi Chefs and servers were Japanese. The servers were very attentive. The ambiance was nice. The sushi chefs definitely knew what they were doing. I ordered the Maguro, Salmon and Unagi Nigiri and Tekka Maki (6 piece tuna roll). They took the time to serve the Unagi after toasting it warm in a toaster oven. Melts in your mouth soft. The Nigiri Sushi was soft and flavorful. They do have Bluefin Tuna and Uni (Sea Urchin Roe) among other high end items. I didn't ask about fresh real wasabi though. They are still doing take out during this weird time with a limited menu. But they got all the good stuff available. They package their teishoku in the most beautiful bentos. They also have inari, musubi, and potato salad available when you go to pick up. Their new takeout time is from 11-6p. Today we got the butterfish, tenpura, and nigiri PLUS the inari. It was just as good as the usual dining in food. Which is excellent. Their tamago in the bento was SOOOO good. Like insanely good. I can't wait till they open up fully and I can order tamago nigiri! If you are looking for a authentic Japanese meal for a good price this is the place to go. I've been here several times and have never been disappointed. The meals range from $17-$40 and is well worth the variety. They have a sushi bar with omakase (chefs choice) which is a little more pricey but equally delicious. Most meals come with miso soup, pickled veggies, appetizer and chawan mushi. I ordered the fried ahi belly this time which was juicy and perfectly seasoned. The service here is quick and friendly. It has a very quaint and cozy vibe. I would recommend making reservations because they do tend to get busy especially on the weekend. They are open every day for lunch and dinner except Sundays. parking can get a little tight so you might have to find street parking which has never been a problem for me. When we first came to Hawaii years ago, this place was really good, but it has steadily gone down hill over the years, especially in terms of service. When you go here nowadays, you feel like you're invisible to the servers. When you finally do get their attention (which often entails standing up and walking to the back of the restaurant to find them where they hide out ... which I usually don't have the nerve to do, but my wife does), they act like you're bothering them during their break. And when they come out from their hideout to serve someone, they go out of their way not to notice anyone else who's trying to get their attention (even my wife, who is not shy about getting attention). The good sushi is still pretty good quality I guess, but you have to order ala carte to get it. That's often the case at sushi restaurants, especially outside of Japan where they figure you won't know the difference between any one fish and another, so I'm used to ordering ala carte, especially now that my appetite isn't what it used to be (there was a time when I would order a set to start with just to take the hunger edge off and then start ordering the good stuff (toro, uni, hotate) ala carte after I had polished off the set). (For the record, I do also like some of the cheap stuff, namely saba and tako and tamago and california roll ... if they're fresh and good quality, as they almost always are in Japan.) It used to be that Yohei's deluxe nigiri set really did have deluxe items in it, so I thought I might try ordering it the last time I was here (about a month ago I guess ... first time we'd been there in a very long time), and it was like a bad joke ... nothing but the cheapest and least desirable varieties. First time here. Stumbled upon this place through google, yelped it and because of all the good reviews, I decided it's a go. Made a reservation for 5pm tonight earlier this morning so that was convenient. I'm not even going to complain about the seating situation because it honestly taught me to speak in a whisper voice which you usually don't do at most restaurants here lol. As plans changed, we needed a table for 5 instead. 1 of us arrived early enough to catch them before setting up our table reservation made for 2. Upon informing them of the additional people, the employee said they wouldn't be able to seat us. We were a party of 4 adults and 1 child. They declined because there wouldn't have been enough space for a 5th seat (will go on about space in a bit). But because the 5th person was my 3-year-old daughter, we asked if we could just stick a seat in between my husband and I, which they agreed on. Now, getting on with the space in this restaurant...Each party's table is literally less than a foot apart. You could pick food from the people sitting next to you! Walking to our table, we'd had to turn our bodies sideways and do a little shuffle to get through! As I skimmed through photos before our visit, I saw one of a dusty shaded light on the wall. Didn't think much of it as it was posted months ago and thought maybe they had cleaned and dusted a bit. NOPE! Got seated at a table against the wall, looked up at the light, and there it was...the dusty shaded light lol! I give a 2-star review because the food was good and the service was alright, despite the whole situation of being denied any service at all. Been coming here since I was a kid, about 15-18 years ago. Still my favorite place for Japanese food because it is such a hole in the wall, off the path place on the outside, then its own little sushi-bar restaurant on the inside with a peaceful atmosphere. I enjoy both the quality of their food and the variety assortments on the plates. I usually get the butterfish or tempura, with some sushi on the side. They use large shrimp for the sushi and tempura and the tempura is well battered. I would want them to start adding the chiso leaves again in the tempura and with the sashimi. They never had it tonight (maybe they ran out or just discontinued). The place is small so I would recommend reservations for parties larger than two, especially between busy times from 6-8pm. read more

Darcie took me here for 2016 Father's Day after a long 15-hour day. I was tired but pleasantly surprised. And I never turn down sashimi! On Dillingham after you cross the river going into town, we took a right to the little strip mall on the left. Parking was easy and the restaurant was somewhat empty with many open tables and only a few people at the sushi counter. Darcie ordered the sushi zen with a side order of Unagi nigiri ($27) and I ordered the Shokado Yohei ($37) and a side order sashimi ($25). Darcie also ordered a 21oz Asahi. I asked for omakase and they said it varies but they can start at around $80 more or less. I decided not to order that since we sat at the table. Maybe if someone out there is adventurous we can do a dual omakase! The dinners came out fast and they were plentiful for $105. I saw the sushi chef eyeballing me as I took the first piece of fish in my mouth. The fish was super fresh. In fact my leftovers still looked fresh in the morning. The quality was just below excellent. I can't wait to go here again to try more stuff. The sets come with all sorts of goodies. What I especially like about the sides were they offered me tastes I've never had due to new herbs and spices. It's great to close your eyes and let your tongue feel the textures and your buds to sense the flavor. Tea was really hot and always replenished. Most meals come with a tiny ice cream ball for dessert. Tasted like sesame but Darcie said it tasted old because it was so solid. Maybe they could offer a hot towel before starting the meal. I also asked for Hokigai (surf clam) but they had none. When we exited, feral cats were running around. Darcie wanted to feed them but they looked healthy and fat. Maybe the restaurant gives them the scraps. Compared to Japan, aside from not having to tip, this food was super delicious. Will bring the family to try. This small yet elegant restaurant offers a higher class of Japanese food, which is wonderful if you are raised with such fabulous dishes. Unfortunately for me, I was raised by a mother who offered rice, meat, and a vegetable for every meal, or she took me to a restaurant, where I ordered simple food to fuel my simple life. One of my very kind friends insisted on treating me to this place, in order to celebrate my retirement. I honestly couldn't eat everything on my plate, so I took a lot of the fancier stuff home. No one in my family would eat these visually appealing foods. It was a disappointing waste! The service was very good at first, but then the lunch crowd overwhelmed the staff and service slowed. When i first stepped into Yohei Sushi Restaurant for the very first time, i though i was walking into a retirement party for Emporer Hirohito or something because of all of the older people that were dining in this establishment. But when you see older asian people eating in this restaurant, that tells you one thing,don't leave home without your hearing aid or your senior citizen's card. Ok, all kidding aside, you have to commend Yohei Sushi Restaurant for pumping out real authentic Japanese food. I have been to numerous places such as Kunio,Gyotaku, and Hata Restaurant, but no one comes close to Yohei when it comes to traditional Japanese food. The main draw is the sushi here, and they don't mess around here. Some friendly advice to you people, if you don't have deep pockets and if you don't have a sugardaddy or sugarmama to foot the bill, then you better get your sushi fix at Genki Sushi or Kuru Kuru because the sushi here is not cheap. I have eaten the omakase here at Yohei Sushi once before with my Mi-chan and her friend from Japan who was looking for stellar sushi. I will tell you this, Master don't fool around when it comes to omakase dining at the Sushi counter. We were treated to a dining experience like you wouldn't believe and it just better and better with each and every course. I just had to thank the good lord that i wasn't paying for the bill because if i did, you would see me panhandling along Nimitz Highway the next morning. Ok, maybe i wouldn't go that far but it was not cheap. You just got to remember now, Omakase is like the chef showcasing his best for you, and with that in mind, you will pay the price for it. I would definitely do this Omakase session again at Yohei Sushi, but with places like Imana's Tei and Izakaya Gaku, if i'm gonna shell out 300 to 400 dollars for a dinner for two, these are the places where i would gladly shell out my month's salary with no regrets. I just have ask my manager at Mcdonald's for some OT when that happens. Now if there is a reason for going to Yohei Sushi, it is for the Teishoku otherwise known as Set Meals. Traditional, simple dishes are very good. Okazuya type selections are competently prepared but not exceptional. Americanized items are not successful. Starting with the best; The misoyako butterfish, unagi, and udon are all standouts. Nigiri sushi is excellent. Huge pieces of fish top lightly formed balls of rice. The seafood is incredibly fresh. I'm still thinking about the hamachi. Side dishes are excellent. The cold soba is perfectly cooked and dressed. The red miso soup is deeply flavored and heavily infused with bonito. Other sides such including the tsukemono are also very good. The best part is you get these with most of the menu items. The average; tempura is just OK. Its local style okazuya. Soft and fluffy batter and served with the usual dipping sauce with grated daikon. Crisper batter and just a little sea salt would be much better. Americanized dishes like the salmon skin roll are not successful. The chefs seem out of place trying to create these items. You are better sticking to the basics. Prices are fair. Lunch is about $30 per person. Sushi bar $75 per person with a couple of drinks. Note: The menu lacks descriptions (English or Japanese) so you better know what Japanese food classics are. The food here is decent, but not the best japanese food I've had but the sushi is fresh and they have the standard japanese style food. Came to eat here with my parents and their friends. It was very busy as it's a small restaurant. The ladies working were very patient while we waited for my parents' friends. By the time they arrived we had been able to look through the menu and pick out what we wanted...Maybe my mistake was not going with sushi... I don't eat shrimp but I opted for the tempura teishoku (complete dinner). The dinner came with miso soup, chawan mushi (egg custard), tsukemono, cold soba, and a seaweed dish (i forget what it's called). Well, as I cannot eat shrimp, I asked to have all vegetable. There was a lot of vegetable...but after further looking, half the plate was onion tempura. Good thing I like onions but it was disappointing that there wasn't some potato or kabocha...I had 2 nori tempura and one each of carrot, eggplant, mushroom and green beans. It seemed as though "vegetable only" was Onion tempura with a few other vegetables whereas if I could have eaten the regular plate, I would have had 2 shrimp tempura. Now granted, everything was delicious but my disappointment was the overly large amount of onion tempura. I haven't had chawan mushi in quite a long time but I have to say it was like I remembered. This one had little veggies or meat in it- one piece of shrimp and one piece of chicken. I think there was a mushroom...the custard was a little more liquidy than I would have liked but had a nice flavor. I really wanted to try dessert but was too full. Who would of thought an authentic Japanese restaurant would be located in Kalihi?! Well now I know where to get my Japanese fix when I crave for it knowing it's in my neck of the woods. I probably wouldn't have known about this place if my friend hadn't suggested it and through yelp we had a girls night out here at this restaurant. It's a cute little Japanese place that makes you feel like you'd be somewhere in Japan. There was four of us who did a walk in around 7pm on a weeday. We were able to get seated right away and was greeted by the waitress and offered water and tea. Although the waitress didn't speak straight English because it seemed all of them were Japanese workers she was helpful in helping me choose my entree. I chose to have the Nabeyaki Udon which was very filling and delicious. My friends had complete combo sets with the variety of Japanese appetizers to go well with the main course on their trays which they all enjoyed as well. The quality of food is awesome. We had just returned from the Mother land 10 days before, but we can never get enough of Japanese food. The parking lot is small, with narrow stalls, and the restaurant shares the lot with a hostess bar and Subway open during the dinner hours. There's a bunch of feral cats roaming around, hopefully they get fed the leftover fish scraps! Luckily it wasn't too busy when we came in and were able to get a table without a reservation. With the sounds of the shamisen playing in the background and the Japanese chatter, it felt like we were still in Japan. The food was delicious and fresh. My tempura was perfectly done, crispy and not oily at all. I ordered unagi sushi on the side and it was sweet and melted in my mouth. The presentation was awesome. All the little dishes hiding small treasures! Price is very reasonable for the amount of food. The second time we went back, we didn't have reservations and were offered the sushi counter. I preferred a table, so they said to come back in 45 minutes and put our name down. We went back 40 minutes later, and they told us no tables, but we can have the counter. Disappointed because we wasted some time and no apology... Gave them another chance last week and were smart enough to make reservations. We were in our workout clothes and luckily it did not matter. The ambiance is quiet and casual. There are so many delicious choices on the menu and we were so undecided. Shrimp, string bean, an eggplant and a carrot. The tempura batter is light, airy and delicious. The dipping sauce is flavorful too. I enjoyed the chawanmushi an egg custard of shrimp and mushroom. Very tasty and the egg done perfectly. The bowl of soba noodles in broth and a touch of wasabi was so delicious. Had a pretty decent experience here. Started off the night with the sushi and zaru set, followed by an assortment of sushi ama ebi, ume with shiso (my favorite of the night), and a natto roll. The ama ebi was tender and sweet, but I thought the natto roll could have used a little more natto (the center of the roll contains a piece of mountain yam, which doesn't add anything to the roll. Followed this with akamutsu nigiri and tomago nigiri, both of which were delicious. For dessert we had the mango pudding and the green tea jelly and azuki beans, both of which were so-so. The wait staff was prompt and fairly friendly, and the prices are about what you would expect from a more traditional-style sushi restaurant. Be sure to make reservations. read more

This is the most authentic Japanese restaurant on the island of Oahu. Of course, I'm saying that off of the fact that I've eaten at a bunch throughout my lifetime, and this was the first one where 1) the bathroom had an actual Japanese state of the art toilet (sprays you with water in your happier area at whichever pressure you desire) 2) I was served something I had never seen before. It was a custard-looking thing in a bowl, and I saved it for last because I dunno, I assumed it would be sweet. Um... no. It tasted like fish, and there was some solid green ball the size of a small olive in it. Does anyone know what that is?? I felt so bad for giving the hostesses here a hard time... I really didn't mean to! The first time I called, I requested a reservation at 6. Five minutes later, I called again and asked if it could be pushed back to 6:15. Upon my dad's request, five minutes later I called to ensure that they accepted credit cards. At 6:10, our car's tire blew out in Kaimuki and my dad actually had to replace it with the spare, so I called again and asked if they could take us around 7. They said the next earliest slot was 7:30, but when we finally rolled in closer to 7:05, they seated us right away. Mad props to the staff... HAI! The portions are a bit small, but you definitely get what you pay for, as the prices are actually pretty descent when compared with some other Japanese places. The misoyaki butterfish was definitely my favorite. Everything else was fresh and utterly neat and Japanese. Haven't been here in 10 yrs but my friend was in the mood for sushi so we stopped by for an early dinner at 530. Same sweet Japanese ladies working there I remember from 10 yrs ago who greet you with a friendly low key "Irasshaimase" when you walk in the door. I also recognize one of the sushi chefs who's probably been there from the start (25yrs ago) -- still looking healthy and with great dexterity in his sushi making. I remember the tempura being good here so I got the Tempura Teishoku complete dinner -- tempura batter was light & airy like before but overall more greasy.. my friend agreed, he got 2 fried amaebi (sweet shrimp) heads and I could see the grease on his lips from eating them! Lol The tempura fryer must not be the same from 10yrs ago! Lol Shrimp was good but the veggies were not at their peak freshness. Miso soup was a hit -- medium dark miso with lots of wakame and radish sprouts. Love when a teishoku comes with chawanmushi (savory egg custard)! Brings me back to when I was a kid and my grandma used to order it for me at all the Japanese restaurants we went to. Side dish of julienned seaweed with sesame seeds was an original & unique compliment. Overall it was good.. I ate every dish on my tray down to the last bite! My friend got the Tokujo deluxe nigiri plate and we shared a bunch of ala carte sushi -- hotate isobe (grilled scallops), ikura (salmon roe), negi toro maki (fatty part of ahi with green onion), and what I order at every sushi place, sweet dashi maki tamago (egg). My Japanese friend said all the nigiri sushi was fresh but the uni (sea urchin) piece "tasted like week old"! Lol However he said the ika (squid) piece was "first class flying on ANA, $50/lb" quality Lol! My favorite tamago was excellent with the perfect amount of sweetness! Ok then comes dessert.. Don't think I ever tried the dessert here, but we got the goma (black sesame) sherbert and coffee jelly. I really should let you know about this... OMG my first bite of the goma, I almost regurgitated my entire meal! Oh dear, it was old, stale and had a really gross gritty lardy texture (like when you keep ice cream in the freezer for too long and it creates a thickened film on the top layer) the whole scoop they gave me was the film! LOL!! YIKES!! Coffee jello was ok.. but they brought it out on a little plate with a fork that had some mystery encrustment on it!! Oh my! I spared you all by removing the fork from the picture and replacing it with a clean pair of hashi! Ok overall, worth visiting again.. Nice seeing familiar faces.. the sweet Japanese ladies were polite & made sure your tea cup was readily refilled so that every sip you took throughout the meal was hot =) It was nice seeing all the sweetheart local Japanese elderly couples out and enjoying themselves (the 5pm dinner crowd :)) 3.5 stars for the food, 5 stars for the whole experience! The fish were somewhat dry, as if it was sitting in the fridge for a long period of time. But the fish to rice ratio was nice, not a large piece of rice on a small cut of fish. The price was not worth it read more

One of my favorite, authentic Japanese sushi restaurants in Hawaii. I love coming here because I know that 1) the food is gonna be really good, and 2) service will never disappoint. I may not have had the chance to visit Japan yet, but I feel when it comes to getting the 'authentic experience', this restaurant is one of the few places you can go to get it. Reservations are a good idea if you plan on securing a table, or will be having 3+ people in your party. If reservations aren't in your plans, you can always have a seat at the (sushi) bar. I recommend ordering a set meal like the Sushi Zen which comes with a variety of different options to try if you don't know what to order first time here. If you normally don't eat that much food, you can always share (it is a lot of food after all) or get ala carte. The dining area is intimate and pretty cozy. Other things I enjoy about this restaurant is the periodic refills of green tea/water and how everyone is so warm and welcoming. Whenever you're in the mood for dining and experiencing a little piece of Japan visit this restaurant. You won't be disappointed.御馳走様でした! read more
