Came here before leaving satisfied so we decided to come here on our anniversary. We both ordered the Ahi Tataki and Tempura set. Unfortunately, we were both unsatisfied with the ahi tataki part.. it had a strange yuzu taste on the fish and I usually like yuzu but this time it was too sour and was unappealing. It was also on a bed of bitter vegetables (and I love to eat vegetables, daikon, etc.) that didn't pair well for me. The tempura was delicious and the soba was refreshing. I just wish I knew what I was getting into before taking a bite of the ahi lol. The otoro was fresh and ono! The dinner sets are very reasonably priced, for both of us it came out to $43? There wasn't a sushi menu so we just ordered off hand, and that's the expensive part. But we pay for fresh quality and the price of living in Hawaii so $47 for 6 pieces of fresh fish is the norm, nothing surprising there. People who say the sushi here is anywhere NEAR as good as the stuff at Sasabune are lying. LYING! Try the toro alone to compare. Yes, the toro here beats the ahi you'll get most places on the island -- but it's also arranged sloppily on a messy clump of rice, and it doesn't melt in your mouth at all. That said, the food is pretty good. Not as neatly presented as it would be in Japan, but otherwise very similar in terms of what's offered. I suppose if you can't get to Japan itself, this would be pretty much the next best thing, but for the price, put your Sasabune-like fantasies to rest -- it ain't gonna happen. read more

With soooooo many different sushi joints in the area, we chose Yohei as it had some of the better reviews. In my opinion its very authentic Japanese. The menu is in Japanese first and English secondly. No problem for us. We sat at the sushi bar and was thrilled to watch the rolls and such being made. We really couldn't decide on choices and the waitress was not up on her English so it was a bit of a struggle to explain what we were looking for or some of the questions we needed answered. Once served our roll (don't remember the name), it was tasty but the seaweed paper was stubborn and I had a heck of a time trying to chew it. The bite sized bites were just that. About the size of a larger old silver dollar. All the rolls I watched being made were roughly that same size. I would have liked them bigger for the price. My Hubby had the Nigiri combo and got 9 pieces with 4 small rolls. All were fresh and very good. Not sure if I would classify the place as affordable as we had hot tea, what was mentioned above and 2 Sapporo's and paid close to $57 bucks. A bit high if you ask us. The place on the outside is a no frills entrance but once inside the quaint setting will have you thinking you might be in Japan. Maybe. Service was good. Locals recommended. Prices~ meh. My dad took me here with my sister around 530. Cute authentic Japanese ambience. Ordered 2 bottles of Otokoyama sake and the omakase by sushi chef Obara whom apparently my dad is good friends with. I'm not much of a "order and hope for the best" type, but each of the dishes were expertly crafted, fresh and delicious. It was almost a shame to eat some of them. Obara is an expert at his craft. This has been one of my favorite Japanese restaurants for some years now. A bit on the pricier side for some of the dishes but very authentic and quality ingredients. Hidden at the back of a small strip mall off Dillingham Blvd in Kalihi, it's not easy to spot from the street but well worth seeking out. I've never sat at the sushi bar, it's been one of those "to do" kinda things for me so one of these days... Food: I love the meals that are served in an an assortment of dishes on a tray. The individual side dishes are usually small which is good so you can eat everything on your tray. On this particular evening, we ordered a side of Uni Sushi, a Sashimi/Tempura combo and a Misoyaki butterfish teishoku. The Uni nigiri was good, not the best I've ever had and the UNI wasn't overflowing but I attribute that to the fact the sushi chef does not overdo the amount of rice. Creamy, briny, goodness in a single bite. The Sashimi/Tempura combo was very good, served with a side of miso soup, cold soba, and a few other seasonal items. The sashimi wasn't your typical slices of raw fish, instead there was several pieces of good quality maguro, a roll of some sort expertly assembled, and a few pieces of seared fish. the tempura had two medium sized shrimps and an assortment of veggies. I didn't get a chance to sample the butterfish but my daughter assured me that it was deslish! Service: I've always gotten good service here and recognize alot of the employees as they've been there for years. We went on a Saturday evening around 7:30 and were lucky enough to get a table right away without a reservation but the place was packed. Call ahead to make a reservation if you plan to have dinner between Friday - Sunday. The food is always served quickly, the service always has been attentive in my experience. Atmosphere: Small space with lots of wood in the decor. They used to have a raised dining space were you sat on the floor but that had been removed years ago and replace with traditional table and chairs. As I mentioned above, I've never had the pleasure of sitting at the sushi bar and it's one of things I always remind myself whenever I'm there but never think of later on! I gotta do it one of these days! Value: It is on the pricier side for the location but the food is authentic and the ingredients are always fresh. There are lower priced items on the menu such as the noodle dishes but I can never resist their Yohei Special or one of their combo meals when I dine there! Damn, this place is still bomb! I haven't been to Yohei for like 15 years but decided on a whim to go back and check it out since we were in the mood for sushi. Our reservation was for 5:30pm and the place was already a full house. Good sign. The parents ordered teishoku dinners but the wife and I were in the mood for sushi. We got the primo stuff like mirugai, uni, unagi, and otoro. Damn, that otoro...was so frickin buttery! All the other sushi was very good as well. I tried some of my mom's shrimp tempura and that was damn oishi as well. The shrimp was a good size and the batter was very light which I like. Got the butterfish. About $18 for the plate that had rice, tsukemono, soup and some of the other traditional stuff. Pretty good. And probably some of the best butterfish I've had now that Kyo-ya is gone (sigh, that was the best butterfish ever, but alas it's gone. RIP Kyo-ya). While we were there though it smelled like the kitchen caught on fire but it must just have been the skin of my butterfish because the building didn't burn down at least. Oh, and the 4 stars if the the butterfish. My experience with the dessert was just short of painful, but I won't totally ding them for it because I didn't need to order dessert with my lunch...The mango pudding dessert thing was, well, how should I put it. Um, it had the texture of something that had been regurgitated and the mango didn't taste refreshing. It has a fake sweet flavor followed by random gelee stuff. If it's not clear, I wasn't a fan of the mango dessert (and I love mango) but I do hear the coffee jello is quite good. They take reservations so make reservations ahead of time! It's fairly small inside so you'll be glad you made reservations. Very Japanesey feeling inside. One of my favorite places to eat when I come home!! It's a comforting feeling walking into a restaurant that you've been going to since you were little and seeing familiar faces. During our latest visit, our family sat at the sushi bar for my mom's birthday. It's the best seat in the house to see the sushi chefs practicing their craft. When you sit at the sushi bar, there's no set menu. You order what you want and sometimes the sushi chef will recommend a variety of fishes for you to try. They're always on point. The fish here is so fresh and flavorful that you can eat it without shoyu or wasabi. The salmon sashimi was complemented with a sliver of lemon and that really hit the spot. In other visits to Yohei we've had their sashimi dinners, miso butterfish, and sashimi+tempura teishoku. Sooooo delicious. The miso butterfish is one of the best I've had. The meat is so tender and flaky that you just want to keep eating more. Honestly, you cannot go wrong coming to Yohei for delicious food and refreshing sake and beer. Expect to leave with an empty wallet, but don't think about it. It's all worth it! read more

Came here for the first time for the sushi bar. It's authentic Japanese style. Sushi is made to order, one by one. You choose your fish and it's sliced right in front of you. You're also given a place of daikon and ginger. Fish quality was amazing, 10/10. I loved the salmon and hamachi sashimi. We went around 7:30 on a Saturday night and they were already out of tako/octopus and crab, which we were looking forward to. We will come again at an earlier time. Since the menu did not have pictures, looking through pics from fellow yelpers definitely helped my friends and I decide on what to order. I ordered the shio salmon meal. The meal looked small, but I ended up being full! However, if you are a big eater looking for a meal with a decent price I would suggest going with the Ahi belly meal. It is the same price as the shio salmon, but you get more food and side dishes. My friends ordered the shokado and sushi zen. These are big meals with all different kinds of little side dishes. I came in for lunch today and I was directed where to sit at the sushi bar by sushi chef David (I think that's the name I heard, at least.) I wasn't presented a menu, but he said I could choose from anything, or let him choose for me. I decided that I had enough room to get omakase and let him choose for me. I was surprised that he started out with a piece of chutoro and a piece of otoro. Those are some of my most favorite pieces so I was wondering what exactly could follow those that would make me still enjoy my lunch. I wish I had a good memory of what else he brought out for me, but in on particular order there was tai snapper, another kind of snapper, abalone, ahi belly, ama ebi with uni on top, hamachi, giant clam, anago (fresh water eel), another type of eel (not unagi), and ebi. I wish I could remember the rest, but I didn't want to be rude while eating at the sushi bar so I just kept eating. Sushi chef was very meticulous with how he prepared each piece and was great at telling me what each item was (not his fault I can't remember.) He checked on me frequently to see how I enjoyed the piece and if I wanted to continue. He even asked me if I found out about Yohei via Yelp. Even though I did look it up on Yelp, I initially didn't find out about them on Yelp but rather another suggestion from the tour guide of the Honolulu Fish Auction. While I have never been to Japan, this felt like how a traditional Japanese sushi restaurant would be. read more

Been coming for years. First time omakase... Perfect size rice. Nice start with a butter fish app to start the tastebuds. Good chi Toro and otoro to start. Unusual as I usually end with the best. Skewers of maguro and mirugai were great break from the sushi. I hate when they tell you no dip and you dont. Then regret and think to yourself...shit, I should've dipped it. Not these guys. On point. Don't dip when they say not to. Just my opinion. Nice highlight. Amaebi w/shiso and hokkaido uni Strike1. Aji fish bones not crispy. Best place for that is Gaku. Hidden away in Kalihi, facing away from the main drag, is one of Honolulu's old school sushi spots that continues to deliver tasty bites at a super high level. Here, you'll find seasonal selections that a lot of places don't offer or highlight. This was where I had shima aji for the first time. We had a really tasty sanma, which happened to be at the peak of the season, fresh from Japan. Service is top notch, the menu is much broader than just sushi, and the selection of sake and shochu is fantastic. They serve the typical cuisine you would expect for a sushi place, but I came here specifically for the teishoku (set meals) which are comprised of small portions of a large variety of entrees and side dishes. I got the "Yohei Shokado" which is their largest set meal. The $34 price tag seems reasonable for the variety and quality of food you get. The meal comes nicely presented in a large bento box, with a few additional bowls of things on the side (makes for nice pictures!). The meal has a huge variety of dishes, including grilled & broiled fish, sashimi, egg custard, noodles, rice, tempura, salads, pickled vegetables, and an assortment of savory snacks. The food was mostly pretty good, but nothing stood out as being particularly memorable in a good way. I do remember being particularly disappointed by the pickled veggies, which were overly salty and not refreshing like I expected them to be. The meal also comes with a small scoop of ice cream (tasted like mung bean flavor) for dessert. The service, is typical for what I've come to expect in Japanese restaurants - courteous, helpful, and efficient, but not chatty or overly friendly. The restaurant was at about 30% capacity on a Tuesday night. Overall, I think this place is solid, but not spectacular. It's a nice way to sample a variety of dishes you might not have tried before, but the variety is really the only thing that stands out. read more

Service is speedy and polite. You can order a few meal combos of sushi, zaru or tempura. The fish is delicious melt in your mouth fresh and the rice is perfect. They have unagi and all the standard sushi bar features. It's great with parking either in the lot or metered parking on the street. Was looking for a restaurant for my mom's birthday. Knew she wanted Japanese food so we were going to the usual - Kunio or Tadashi. But my sister heard about Yohei from her friend so decided to try it. And we're SO glad we did. Food and service was great. Service: immediately greeted when we entered the restaurant. Beverage order was taken right away and the refills of water and tea came regularly. Friendly and inviting. Expectations= A strong belief that something will happen or be the case in the future. Trying new restaurants can be the most exhilarating or nerve wrecking thing all at once. Especially when you're about to pay some hard earned money on fish you expect to be fresh along with good service. Having visited a few Japanese places on the island and back home, I would say I have just a slight bit of expectations of what I want. This goes to all businesses, not just Japanese spots. Yohei was recommended by a friend and so it raised the caliber quite a bit from what I hoped it would be. Situated off of Kokea St., across from the Kapalama Canal and on the same building as Lox of Bagels is a corner unit for Yohei with shoji style windows. Parking is shared between businesses and parking was not difficult to find during weekend and during lunch time. We were greeted by a multitasking individual asking if we wanted to be seated at the sushi bar or the tables. At the time, the restaurant was not busy and several tables were open for the taking. A full bar across the way was nothing unique to remember in conjunction to decorations that were worth raving. My two companions and I decided to be seated at the sushi bar in hopes we would connect with the sushi chefs along with his sidekick. Perhaps, sitting on the normal tables would have been a better move for there were zero interactions what so ever between us. Have we done something wrong to offend anyone? I felt I've been reprimanded for something I didn't do. Basically, that's how we felt for the duration of our entire dining experience. Perhaps we should have left or it would have saved us our hard earned cash and a negative review. I tried to remain positive and ignored the negatives but I continued to create a hole 6 feet deep of what we call the "experience" and the drowning of "expectations". The menu is rather uncomplicated compare to the other sushi places I've enjoyed and raved about. I decided to keep it small, cheap and fast by trying the Chirashi plate with a side of Uni Nigiri. My first batch of Uni might have been my chance for an unlucky hand. The rice was palatable, the uni was not. I enjoyed looking at the plate but that's as good as it gets. The amaebi was enjoyable and sizable. The 2 slices of maguro is probably the only fresh pieces of fish out of the entire plate. I can keep eating the tamagoyaki with my rice; the others are what seem to be several bad pieces that have been put on the plate after a few bites. Thank goodness for the delicious bowl of miso soup with chunks of large tofu. I was immensely unsatisfied with my first helping of uni so I had to try another order. I was okay with it but still not the best I've had from places like Sushi Murayama and Maguro Brothers (which I would highly recommend everyone to visit and are top notch on the island). For the money spent here, I could have easily saved myself the grief of a bad review and my two companions of the uncomfortable feeling of racism. I'm glad the butterfish was decent based on a whisper from one of my companions. The hidden side fees were not worth the dollars, and the awful customer service from anyone from the sushi bar to the rest of the staff. The customer service was unacceptable (with the exception of the lady that handled our check). The food, I can easily pass on and go to Maguro Brothers for what we spent. If you like good sushi in the industrial area you're here since this is the best. I went there last week with my daughter and her family and no one had anything bad to say about the food. My daughters' mother-in-law was there and she is from Japan. She knows good Japanese food when she tastes it. . I ordered the chidashi sushi, one of my favorite dishes. This consisted of rice with sushi vinegar accompanied by various kinds of raw fish, as well as sweet egg and octopus.
