Oh My. I am sitting here close to 70 years old thinking about my most fav restaurants when I was young and York came to mind. The food and the chocolate cake with whipped cream on top. Oh, and at times the fruit jello that was chopped up and stirred into whipped cream. So I Google it for kicks and giggles and..... there is still one left! I am so jealous because I live far away now. The decor looks similar, serving seems the same. Really gone down hill. We travel 45 minutes one way almost every week to eat here. Yesterday was the worst it's ever been. It started with the order. I ordered just the chopped sirloin sandwich. Asked for cheese sticks as the substitute for fries. Also asked if there was an extra charge and was told there was an up charge. However I was charged full price for the cheese sticks. Noticed other things moving down the line but let it go because we came in after lunchtime. Most of the booths were not cleared off. Chose a table and counted 7 tables stacked with dirty dishes and not cleaned off. The speaker was blaring Michael Jackson and I do mean blaring. The waitress was doing her best. When she was asked about the dirty tables and the blaring music she was making excuses of inexperienced manager, shift change etc. This is the only restaurant we still go to because I grew up going there. So, first time here, i don't know why sooner. I have been in Columbus for 19 years this time, but man what a place! It is literally a step back in time to the early 80's for a steakhouse. The red cushiony style sitting with many group tables around in the middle. There was even a birthday party going on! The steak? OUTSTANDING! Baked potato? Rivals any modern steakhouse. The roll? We came her strictly out of nostalgia. 100%! 1 member of our group actually worked at one of the locations up in Cleveland. So again just nostalgia. I have to say it is the same. The last time I was at a YSH I was probably 6 and it was in the mid70's. And this time I was still the youngest person in the place. LOL! So it's a simple menu with lots of choices cooked to order. Steaks, chicken, pasta, burgers. All come with potato choice, roll, salad bar. This is cafeteria type style so you grab as you go and place your order for your entree then it is cooked to order. Salad bar has lots of choices and is pretty fresh. It's serve yourself but 1x and 1 trip. They have desserts to grab. Looked OK. Didn't try any though. I got the sirloin, baked potato and made my salad. They cooked it more medium. I asked for medium rare. Not a great cut, had some parts I couldn't cut with the knife because of a tendon or something. Potato could have been cooked a bit longer. It was pretty bland and a bit hard. So it was very mediocre. But the prices are not expensive so I got what I paid for in that sense. The staff seemed nice when you were through the line to order and grab your salad, dessert, utensils, ect. When you choose your seat, a server takes your ticket and then will bring your entree to you and get you pop refills. She was also nice and attentive. Decor is 1970's it's fairly clean but dark and dated. Part of the nostalgia. Would I go here again. No, if I want a steak I'd go someplace else. OMG! Take me back to my childhood. From the time we opened the door, we stepped into the memory of standing in line and salivating over the pictures of the menu. Picking up your own cafeteria tray and giving your other to the hostess was exactly like oldtimes. Although the cold side has changed, the offering are still the same. On the hot side, meals brought out to your table. The ambience is still the same very medieval and the lighting is warm and set the tone. My family visited York Steak House for lunch 6/13/2026. We traveled an hour to eat at our favorite restaurant of 40yrs. We were utterly disappointed in the food now that ownership has changed hands. Ordered steaks and they were supposed to be medium; they were well done and so tough we could hardly cut them. Sent them back and they came back rare. The steak quality was not good, no flavor. Also, I got the always loved and my favorite mushroom gravy. It was cold and they have changed the brand it wasn't what I know and loved. Rolls were cold and barely cooked. So disappointed, we won't ever go back again. It's very sad as well because we've been going there for 40 years. read more

The restaurant it self was hot and unappealing. My steak was mostly gristle. It was the small sirloin it had no flavor and could barely cut it. Another person at the table got the Chicken and both meals tasted like hospital food no flavor. Use to be one of my favorite places and now I will never go back. Ok so here's the thing with York. It's not the place you go for exceptional food. It's a place you go for a healthy dose of nostalgia. Sometimes you just need to have a Ppnderosa-quality meal in an old-school establishment. That's what we have done for two different Valentine's Day dinners: 2020 - yikes and 2025. Now since our last visit in 2020, some things have changed and some have stayed the same. York was purchased by the owners of Starljner Diner. They made some updates to the interior dining area, but I honestly liked the old way because it was more vintage nostalgia than hotel restaurant. So imaginary points deduction for that (no real points off because it was clean(ish) and organized - not reducing points for my preference on decor. The salad bar is now part of the checkout line vs standalone in the dining room. Getting seconds of salad seems super inefficient now so don't forget anything. Let's talk about the lines on Valentine's Day. They are LONG. This place is so popular on Valentine's Day that we still had to wait in line for 20 mins or so at 5pm. We had made reservations online via the website, but that was dumb because there's no other line. There's no one checking reservations. They wouldn't answer the phone. So skip reservations. Just wait in line with the rest of us. Food is so mid but in the very best way possible. Nothing scratches the itch like overcooked steak drenched in A1. It's definitely not cheap and value is not high (hence the 3 star), but I love it so I am not even mad. Super hot baked potatoes! A lot of the patrons ordered steak tips and I feel like I missed out on a pro move. I'm going to get those next time and add on some Nancy's Home Cooking chicken noodles (because they have the OG recipe and looked super good!) Another fun thing: on Valentine's Day, everyone can get free cherries jubilee and it's so good! They use good cherries for it. Perfect little treat apres meal. This year they had handmade cookies too and they were really good. Service by every employee was super solid. Everyone was friendly and attentive. Full stars for the whole staff, especially since it was really busy! Honestly, if you're in the mood for what York is about, it will not disappoint. I give it a 3.5 rounded to a 4 simply because it's too pricey for what you get. If the prices came down, it would be a solid 4. read more

My wife and I went to York Steak House to try a plate of the original Nancy's Chicken and Noodles. This was a lunch plate $9.99 special with noodles on top of mash potatoes, green beans, but with a York Steak House bun with it. I got a side of sautéed mushrooms ($2.19) and we each had a soda $2.69 each. Total was about $30 for both of us. This plate tasted more like Nancy's than the first time at Starlight Diner. It was nice to taste Grandma King's old recipe like the old days. I like the old York Steak House decor. Reminds me of Northland Mall days. Enjoyed a nice, nostalgic meal at York Steakhouse tonight. The service was welcoming and friendly from the person who took my order, to the servers that made me feel like a guest. Affordable and delicious meal. I had the twin filets cooked medium rare and they were prepared as ordered. Needed a little seasoning but that was easily remedied with some salt and pepper. Salad bar had plenty of fresh options and the dressings were good as I remembered. My mom has always loved York, so while running errands with her we decided to treat her to a nostalgic steak dinner. We have been there a few times in the past with her and I always remembered how fresh their salad bar was. I heard that there was a new owner so figured things might look a little different. They had the same menu I remembered, with pictures and prices hanging on the wall as you walk to the cashier positioned at the end of the menu items. My hubby and mom wanted ribeyes and I was going to try their 1/3 chicken with dark meat, but was told they were out of dark meat. So I went with a ribeye as well. The way York is set up, you grab a tray like in a cafeteria and as you travel down the line you have an opportunity to choose your drinks, maybe grab a dessert and some butter packets as well. As we moved down the line we learned that they have actually taken their salad bar out of the dining room and placed it on this line. There are maybe 10 items to choose from and you have to choose quickly since you have folks waiting behind you. The items were not fresh. The broccoli was brown, the tomatoes looked old and it just looked unclean in general. The interior dining room looked exactly the same, straight out of 1972, which has always been the appeal to York for a lot of people. We sat in mom's old favorite booth and she was able to talk with her favorite waitress who has been there for over 20 years, so she enjoyed herself. The steaks were okay, but nothing to rave about. They had a lot of gristle and were very chewy. With a cost of $75.00 for the three of us, we just weren't very satisfied with the visit. I doubt we will return anytime soon. read more

Go for the nostalgia. Go back bc the steaks are that good! Going back to the 80s at York Steakhouse. I forgot just how delicious the sautéed sirloin tips are. I also got a side of mushrooms but they were not quite what I remembered, a bit more bland but still a nice side. The salad bar is small and one trip only so make it count. Lettuce is iceberg and the toppings are sparse but they have those hard crunchy bacon bits and the dark red French dressing. We got the chocolate cream pie and it had a pronounced peanut flavor. Not sure I would do that again. But I will go back. The service is polite and attentive. And the ambiance is cave-meets-faux castle. This place may have been great decades ago, and I wanted to see what the nostalgia was all about, but after my didning experience this place needs to call it a day!! Salad bar was minimal and one time trip only, no ice in the soda machine, but $3 for a pop. Prices aren't that great, also got charged for random things, minimal fees but still..... They were somehow out of baked potatoes (and T-Bones) so I was given fries as a sub and I think I might have gotten 4 legit steak fries the rest were bottom of the bag crumbs. The ribeye looked like shoe leather, and same toughness and I would assume tasted about the same. The rolls had no volume or density at all for their size. Also I'd say in the 30-45 minutes I was there I probably saw at least 5 steaks get sent back to the kitchen for improper cooking. I really don't know how anyone can rate this place better than 1 star. Thanks York for enduring all these years, but your better days are behind you and it's OK to walk off into the sunset!! read more

If you need a throwback to an older ponderosa experience, this is it. I'll give it 3 stars across the board. The price was good, and the food was edible. :) Salad bar seemed like it mostly came straight from a GFS order and was pretty anemic. My steak was on the tough side (order medium and over cooked) and had zero seasoning. I never add steak sauce, but I had to do something. Oddly, not every table had sauces on it so the server would have to bring it.....server seemed overworked, inefficient, or not particularly helpful at one point said "could you help me and go get your own butter" when I had overlooked that you needed to grab it on the way through the cafeteria style line. P.S. average age of customer was about 78yo. Servers.....63. Just go in eyes open. I may give it another shot just because of the pricing. read more

I keep reading reviews about how things are different while under new management, but you / we keep coming back. A group of us, former co-workers, plan a lunch every 4-6 months or so and York Steakhouse is our #1 choice and will continue to be. Our menu items today were, Sirloin Tip (3 of us had with 1 having double tips) and 1 Strip Steak 100% great steaks all round. Baked potatoes, Yes a single trip to the salad bar but I want to eat my main meal not fill up on salad. The Dinner Rolls remain mouth watering. If I can say to those not remembering why they keep coming back, Stop and take a look around, you're not going to find a steakhouse like this historic site anywhere. Some restaurants never change and this is one of them. Instead of a salad bar available in the dining room it's available as you go through the line before you order your meal. FAST, FRIENDLY and FAIR-PRICED (especially now-a-days)!!!! It's cafeteria style. Order your entree, select dessert, and make your own salad. Dessert is extra and salad is one time helping. It's more than steaks. They also offer roasted chicken, spaghetti and fried fish. To be transparent, the steaks are MAYBE an inch thick and the extra ounces come from the length differences. So, steaks are okay, not the best and not the worst They still offer ribeyes, rib tips and loin steaks. They were out of TBone the Friday night we were there. When they bring your order to the table it will include a big roll and ask if you want steak sauce. The service was fast and friendly. Lots of regulars, families and couples. Definitely not a fancy place. "Throwback" is a great description. We enjoy stopping in for the nostalgia and the pricing. The prices can't be beat and adds to the enjoyment. So what does The York Steakhouse specialize in? Steaks of course. Right? Wrong. It specializes and sells one thing. Nostalgia. And boy oh boy does TYS do it well. If you're in your 40s or older and want to be transported back to when things were simpler & better in the 1980s walking through the front doors of TYS will take you there. Nothing has changed. Literally nothing. It's truly amazing and such a special treat that I can't recommend enough if you want to know the flavors and feeling of a now bygone era. Out of the 200 locations that once existed (mine was in Erie, PA in the Millcreek Mall!) only the original Columbus location still exists. And in a weird way, that makes it all the more special. read more

We've been coming here off & on for years. We recently moved back to the area and wanted to come to one of our favorite spots and was so discussed and disappointed! The food was an edible and so downgraded. And the salad was so scarce was barely even existent, but believe me the price was definitely extremely outrageously high.. I promise you we will never ever step foot in there again and I will make sure everybody we know won't either. I will make sure of that. How sad it used to be such a great place to go to. The infamous York Steakhouse... I had the pleasure of testing the waters here on an early Saturday afternoon. Stepping inside is a step back in time to the late 80's/early 90's. Dimly lit, plenty of seating, and rustic steakhouse style. Enter through a log hall, grab a tray and start the experience. Our order was then taken, notes on a paper, plate for salad bar provided. One trip, assemble as you go. Unfortunately the selection was pretty picked over, and a lack of replenishment left me disappointed in the salad bar. Final stop was to pay and find a table. Service was not the greatest. We finished our salads before our server even came to the table to collect our meal ticket, refills on drinks were hard to come by. After some time our food came out. One order was incorrect, fries in lieu of a baked potato. Our server promised to correct it right away. Still waiting on that potato. The steak was mediocre, needed additional seasoning. Decided to check the York out for one thing only and that was the Chicken Noodles on Mashed Potatoes, green beans and dinner roll. The interior is like stepping back in time. The dark carpet, wood tables and dim lighting. The green beans were straight out of a can but okay. The Chicken and Noodles was phenomenal. Great big pieces of chicken mixed with homemade noodles in a nice thick gravy. Yummy!!!! And the dinner roll was off the chart. Pillowy soft and buttery tasting. Delicious!! On to my waitress, Michelle rocked it checking on me numerous times. I'm guessing she's been there a while since she knew a lot of the customers. We hadn't been since 2020 and decided tonight was the night to embrace some nostalgia and grab a bite to eat. The inside is straight out of the 80's, in the now vintage, original interior and design. Seriously like stepping back in time. We both ordered steaks with baked potatoes and the single pass salad bar. The food was good. Better than I remembered and better than I thought it would be. Everything was fresh and yummy. This would have been. Five star but my steak was undercooked (more medium than medium-well) but everything else was perfect. I ate around the outside and brought the rest home as leftovers and will just microwave it. Our server, Olivia, was the best! She provided great service. She offered to have the steak tossed back on the grill but didn't really feel this is the kind of place to do that in. No reason to wait so long between visits and will definitely return. read more

Favorite place to eat since I was young. Such a great atmosphere with incredible food. The price for a family meal isn't as much as many fast food places would be. Separating the experience from the food, I recommend York for the family friendly, budget friendly trip down memory lane that it is. But outside of the fist sized dinner rolls and the salad bar that lets you cherry pick your favorite ingredients, it's hard to pinpoint a food recommendation. The sirloin was okay - and made better with A1 sauce. I tried the chopped steak "topped" with a cheese slice and grilled onions (and mushrooms on the side). The A1 helped this one out, too. The honey roasted chicken (breast and wing) was on the drier side and didn't pack much of a honey roasted punch. The plain baked potato was... a plain baked potato. They offer loaded versions which have to be a better call. York's helpful staff can help somewhat compensate for what the food lacks, but there's only so much they can do. read more

The restaurant was clean woth plenty of seating especially for big parties. Servers were friendly. We were told the new owner took over about 2 months ago. Service was very slow, from placing our order, receiving our order, and the inattentive waitress. The salad bar was the only good part. I ordered dark meat 1/4 honey chicken, which was over baked and very dry. Dinner roll had no flavor. Boyfriend got a ribeye and asked for it cooked medium. It was well done. Sounds like this is the last York left, and who knows when it will go, so figured I'd better check it out when I was nearby. It's exactly as I remember York, and really Ponderosa and several other old-school cheapish steak places. Loooong entryway, order at the counter, go to the salad bar, etc. The salad bar is small, included with your meal, though I can't figure out if you can go back up- the sign says something like "One plate, one trip." Does that mean get a new plate each time, or only one trip allowed? Anyway, it was fresh and there are enough options to make a decent salad. Grab a dessert or sour cream nearby, for a bit extra. Muzak version of "California Dreamin'" playing so you know you're in the right place... Someone carries your tray to your table, which is nice, especially since I was using a cane temporarily. I got steak tips, which come with onions, a roll, and potato (I got baked.) I figured that would be pretty quick. Nope, they took a long time. Lucky I had a salad to stave off hunger. But when the entree came, it was pretty darn good. A decent portion, moist and tender, cooked to the requested medium. Good soft roll, average baked potato. I left full, and I enjoyed the meal. Prices are reasonable. I had a good meal for $15. Decent choices, with better steak, or burgers, chicken, etc. A few Italian items. Lunch specials. Super good table service. It's still great! Ordered two dinners, the 5 oz Copped Steak Sandwich $4.99, added Steak Fries for $1.99, and a Salad Buffet for $2.59. What a deal. Two Mini Cheesecakes for $1.99 each. As a tip...get an extra small serving of their Blue Cheese Dressing for dipping your Steak Fries in. The soda fountain drinks taste off... it's either the ice machine which is what I suspect, or the water. Stay with a bottle drink until it's fixed. I still really like the food here. read more

The service is excellent, and the food is properly cooked. This steakhouse is one of two in central Ohio that properly serves food, the other location is the Hickory house in Reynoldsburg. If you are on the west side, this is the place to go for a good steak. I have even had the cheeseburgers and they taste like a steak, a properly prepared steak. read more

This place is no joke. It's straight up a legitimately, very good restaurant. I had the York Filets, an iced tea & a slice of cake. With $3 to leave for the server ( you can opt for cash back to leave at the table), the bill came to just over $31. I don't think it was worth that, but it WAS very good. Steak was cooked the way I wanted & was soft & juicy. I chose Steak Fries w/my dinner & roll (which was so-so) & the fries were decent as well. Only downside was the cake, which was DRY, but edible. The server was acceptable; nothing worth noting. He refilled my tea once. He was available too in case I needed him. The dining room was clean & presenting. Very nice atmosphere. I had a very nice dinner, & I'm sure you would too. Definitely a go-to, 3-star restaurant. Nice, sit-down, quiet, tasty but not a destination place. Still, it's worth trying. read more
