This was the best price (low $200's) that I found in the metro Boston area for a Fri-Sun stay. I wasn't sure how the hotel would be, based on the mixed reviews, but I was very happy with my stay.
Very good location: The map of Boston looks big, but the blocks are actually very short & very walkable. It's one stop ('Courthouse'), across the water from South Station (silver line- actually a bus shuttle. Runs often). The hotel's right next to the station. There's lots of cafe's, public spaces with great bay views, ICA & Children's Museum, shopping (lulemon, LL Bean, Warby Parker, pop-up shops in public plazas), a movie theater across the street, co-working spaces, CVS 2 blocks away, Shake Shack is next door. Recommend: Flour Bakery, Columbe Coffee, fuku, Sweetgreen, Taiyaki Ice Cream & Lucky's Lounge for Brunch. Rooms facing the street does get noisy from the Beer Garden diagonal from the hotel & public plaza with music near the movie theater. (You can crack open your window) Customer Service was very good & a nice diverse group, very quick check in & out.
The rooms are (obviously) small, like a comfortable but larger boat cabin- or comfortable NYC Studio. There's nooks & crannies for everything- great design! Appreciate the dual window shades & drawn room/bathroom divider curtain. Everything's clean & modern, including the coat hangers. The bunk bed is a full twin, the bottom bed is a good mattress. It is like a futon on a motor- folds in half to make a sort of 'couch' & then push the button to extend for a bed. Realized that it was nice to have a bit of an angle to sleep...didn't need 2 pillows! There's lots of towels, hand towels, wash cloths, nice liquid soap/body wash, shampoo/conditioner & a Coriander/Dill body lotion. -the products are for sale downstairs. The light around the TV has different colors, I changed it to white. It turns off on a motion timer, to save energy.
Water & ice stations on each floor. There's a small gym on the 2nd floor. Towels, water, mats & medicine balls, weights, treadmills. Not a fan that people from the bar/roofdeck next door can watch you exercising, but that's city life.
The PH Bar has an indoor section & small outdoor patio. More like a smaller lounge/bar, not a large roof deck like I expected. There's meeting rooms & 'phone booths' on the 1st floor, chess & tic tac toe, books.
Suggestions/Things:
- elevator had a hard time scanning my room pass to get to my floor
- lots of people traffic going in & out to the PH Bar (open to Public)
- Request a free MINI Fridge at Check-In. It LITERALLY can fit 2 XL Coffees, 4 navel oranges or something. Not normal food containers. Keep in Mind.. I actually brought some large sandwich bags.
- room door was sticky/hard to open in the morning
- the luggage/'closet' area fits a small suitcase, laid down. A large suitcase wouldn't do well in the space.
-the ladder up to the bunk bed is super narrow & flat against the wall. Wish it was angled out. I'd say the steps are 2-3 inches in depth. Seems pretty dangerous, even for my 100lb active self.
- nice idea to enclose the shower stall & toilet for privacy. The toilet area NEEDS a vent...because it's enclosed. The vent near the shower didn't seem active. The shower leaked in the front.
- the toilet & shower had designs in the glass, but pretty sure people can see you in the bathroom area from the restaurants/patios across the street, especially at night with lights FYI, so don't forget about the shades!
- the sink was MINI, to wash my face, I have to angle myself sideways. Otherwise it's fine.
- FREE $5 Food Credit: didn't work. You can leave the door tag hanging during your stay, to be Green; so housekeeping doesn't change your sheets. However, the 1st & last day of your stay doesn't apply to it & on the middle days, you have to leave it out all day. The credit is applied during check out, but I didn't see anything mentioned. $4 for coffee, $9 for eggs & toast, $3 muffins, $4 fruit cups (standard hotel quality)....Actually it may have worked? I never got an email with the bill. read more
