If I hadn't gone here for dinner the other night, if I had just written this review from my memories of this place, it would have gotten four stars. Everything my friends and family have ever ordered there was satisfactory and I think their donkatsu is great. But then I went there for dinner with my family. And I ordered my donkatsu, as usual. But then they told me they didn't have any donkatsu sauce. I was flabbergasted. How could they not have donkatsu sauce?! WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO EAT?! So I ordered a combo: spicy pork with seafood tofu stew. Wow. REALLY BAD. Their spicy pork is HORRIBLE. I had a couple bites and that was it. I forced my mum to eat the rest (yes, I'm a horrible daughter, let's move on). Young Dong really disappointed me that night. So why am I still giving them three stars? Because when they DO have donkatsu and its sauce, it's good. It makes me happy. And dude, their galbi is awesome. Thank goodness my mum had ordered her tofu stew with it. I ate it all. Delicious. In the future, I'm going to make sure I always call ahead to make sure they have donkatsu sauce before I come here. But if they do, you can be sure I'll be here and I'll be happy. I'm not going to claim that I know authentic Korean food but I'm not completely incapable of judging good food vs. bad food. With that said, Young-Dong Tofu Restaurant definitely falls under "good food." I love their chap chae (glass noodles)--sesame oil, shitake mushrooms, beef, onions, greens, need I say more?! My family and I always get the beef ribs + seafood tofu combination, which come out sizzling hot and great for the cold weather! I see that a lot of people commented on service not being so good but we had great service when I went this past weekend. Really generous with their side dishes. The only problem I had with Young-Dong (and this is the only time we had this problem) is that our Tofu had A LOT of tofu and not that much soup...made it really thick. And though it came out sizzling, it didn't cook the raw egg we put in it at all! Sad times, but I really think this was a one time thing cause we've come here a lot and never had these problems. Last week, my mom visited our old watering hole. Great food, but the service definitely needs some work. Spicy Chicken with Beef Tofu -A delicious dish chicken dish, very flavorful with a perfect mix of spice and borderline BBQ flavor. If you're not that into spice, then I wouldn't take a chance at this dish just for sheer enjoyment value. The Beef Tofu was rather typical of Tofu Houses... super hot, lots of goodies inside, and tasty. BBQ Beef Ribs with Kim Chi Tofu -The BBQ Beef Ribs were pretty darn good. The BBQ flavor was quite pronounced here, served super hot, still sizzling on the pan. It's stacked pretty high, so the portions aren't bad at all. Served on a bed of grilled onions, you'll find yourself chomping through more than you can handle... and end up leaving on a stretcher. When I tasted the Kim Chi Tofu, I didn't notice any real differences from my mom's Beef Tofu. Oh well, it was still tasty... though, as mentioned above, not too different from other Tofu Houses. When we were ordering, the server seemed detached and uninterested. When my mom asked him a question about one of the items, he gave a face, explained it in as few words as possible, and waited there in an awkward silence. My thoughts? "Bitch, you better not be rude to my mom... I'ma shove that pen up your ass." My Actions? I clarified what the fucker was trying to say to my mom. The rest of the night wasn't bad though. Well, more like 3.5/5 Man, this place is busy! Or is it just small? I've been wanting to try this place upon my friend Angelie D.'s and other reputable yelpers' reviews. I came here with Raymond R. and another friend. We were lookin for something hot one freezing night and clearly tofu soup was the answer! The wait was lengthy, but it won't push you to starvation. As far as tofu soup goes, their broth is yummy, but not the absolute best I've ever had. Good, but nothing to write home about. I had the mushroom tofu soup (my usual at most korean tofu joints) and I ordered it at the true Korean spiciness level (extra spicy ;P). I felt like it lacked that K-town flavor and attitude, but it's still better than most, especially in the area. The sides were delicious but lacked in variety.. In my experience, for a party of 3 you'd normally get 6-7 diff sides. Still though, quality over quantity and they clearly were quality! The beef bulgogi my friend ordered was some of the best I've had too! Oh, and I know it's all about "turnover" in the restaurant biz (especially if it's asian owned!), but I never appreciate getting rushed through my meal, especially if it's a good one! I would highly recommend the Kimchi Jigae and fried mandoo from this place. The soon do bu is pretty disappointing, it's lacking of depth and flavor no matter which combination I've ordered. I seem to like BCD, tofu house or Song Ko Dong better. The quality of the galbi, bulgogi is not fresh...it's cold, small and lots of grisly fat. Upon visiting this place a few more times, my initial enthusiasm faded. While dining here with my mother and sister, who are both very much intolerant of spicy foods, we specifically asked for the tofus to be made without a hint of pepper. It came, still spicy, and we asked to return it for a nonspicy portion. They took out the egg and kind of watered it down and didn't seem to happy about the entire situation. The only reason why this restaurant is prospering is because of the lack of neighboring competition. If this restaurant was in k-town, they wouldn't last a month. The service (or lack thereof) is rude, disrespectful and slow. Being busy is not an excuse, hire more people. You feel like a sardine in a sardine can at this place. There are a lot of tofu houses in this area and Young-Dong Tofu (get your mind out of the gutter!) is on the lower rung of the bunch. The food is mediocre at best, the prices are high, and the service is downright deplorable. I think the servers may mean well, but they constantly have an apathetic attitude towards their customers. Ask them for something like a refill or napkins and they shoot you a look of disdain. Mention that you haven't received your food yet after a long wait and they reply dryly, "We're making it" (no apologies or nothing). Call out to them because they just dropped off your food at the wrong table next to you and they walk away pretending not to hear you. The only time they seem to be happy is when you leave so they have one less table to deal with. I often see a wait outside this restaurant when I pass by and I can never understand why. I'm a firm believer in voting with your wallet. If a place has long waits, poor service, and sub par food, DON'T EAT THERE. There are plenty of other restaurants around that do the job right and that's where you should spend your money. read more

I've been a fan of this restaurant for a while until this most recent visit. First of all, customer service seems to be okay; nice and friendly 50% of the time and "decent' at others. What I meant by decent is that they will provide service, but with no emotion. Food tasted good. I have no complaints. However, what made me submit this review is due to my recent experience. I noticed the onion pancake always come out much later; when the main course is almost done. The disturbing part is how they are carried out. The waiter carried approximately 8 pancakes, one on top of the other with plates in between. Wonder where the bottom of the plate was on before it was stacked on another pancake. I would rate this Korean BBQ as very good. I've always noticed it on the drive home from work but only now went inside. There is only one entrance from the street, and there is a median so you'll have to do a U-turn either coming or going. Parking lot only holds a few cars. Not a very big place, and meals are anywhere from 16 per person and up. The neat thing is they offer either all-you-can-eat or plates. We ended up getting plates. The common 7dishes of pickled vegetables seem to be very traditional (no potato salad) and each one was very good. I liked the brussel sprouts (garlic and peppered). The soup was boiling hot and eggs were served separate. You crack them open yourself. The meat dishes were heavily sauced up and smokin' hot when they got to the table. I have came here a few times now and have tried their beef rib and bulgogi combo wirh tofu. Their tofu is not too watered down and I would recommend getting at least mild spicy. The serving sizes are not too bad and can usually fill two people with one combo. I really like their side dishes and their kimchi is mixed with raw oyster, extra plus! The wait is usually not that bad and is fast compared with the young dong on Las Tunas. There aren't that make Korean tofu places in Arcadia, but this one has been around for a while. It's weird because I feel like there's actually a lot of Korean tofu places with this name... Hm... There's plenty of parking since it's in the Pavilions plaza on the side by LA Fitness. When I got there at around 6:30PM on a Monday they were pretty busy and had a waiting list. That was a good sign! I ordered the seafood and beef tofu and also the beef bulgogi. The tofu was delicious and I love all the extras in it! Some places skimp on the other ingredients but not this place! The beef was on a sizzling iron plate with onions... It was nicely marinated, tender, but a tad oily IMO... Nonetheless, it was still tasty. Their friend pancake was pretty bland, but the side dishes, banchan, are sooo good! My favorite are the seaweed in vinegar and cucumber in a spicy sauce. Not sure why this spot has so many bad reviews but I came here on a Friday afternoon for my Korean food craving! The staff greeted and seated us right away, and I ordered the seafood tofu soup combo with hot stone bibimbap! My friend got the kimchi beef tofu soup! They serve us complimentary salad, banchan and a complimentary pancake of some sort (I think might be potato? Super crispy!). Although there are only 4-5 side dishes, I have to say, this is the only place that gives such generous portions of banchan! Haha! From my experience, Korean restaurants only give a little bit of each side dish, but these people are generous! The prices are extremely reasonable in my opinion for Korean food. Service was good, staff were friendly and attentive, came around to fill water multiple times. The food came out quite fast! And piping hot! The only thing I would say is I wish there was more liquid in the tofu soup, once it stopped boiling in the stone pot. There was barely any soup! Mostly tofu. Their bibimbap was delicious, and the stone pot made some of the rice extra crunchy! I wouldn't say this was the best Korean restaurant I've been to, but I'd say it's one of the good ones. $10 dollars gets you alot. A friends invited me down to Arcadia to try some Korean tofu soup and such. I ordered the dumpling tofu soup while my friend ordered the beef tofu soup. As soon as we were seated we were treated to some awesome salad with a peanut dressing. Then the side dishes came and all of em were delicious. Our soups came and I was surprised to see many dumplings in my soup... The other places I eat at only give me one big ol dumpling. Here and Young-Dong I get 3-4 swollen sized dumplings in my soup. Score! The service was pretty good. Our total came out to $20. All in all it was a great experience. read more

I always come here to get my fix of soon dubu :D. I've been here many many times and I've always been satisfied. The food here is pretty pricey but I guess it's to be expected of Korean food. The side dishes are fantastic, especially the cucumber kimchi and the seaweed and beansprouts. The bindaetteok (mung bean pancake) here is SO GOOD too. I can eat the whole thing by myself. Anyways moving onto the tofu. I really love soon dubu, and I usually split a mild seafood tofu with my sister. It's the perfect blend of flavor, mingled with the varying textures of the tofu and shellfish and rice mixed with the creamy yolk of the egg that is included that makes me come back here. I also like scraping the hardened rice off the stone bowl :P. Other dishes like the galbi are good too; the meat is chewy and flavorful and the onions, after being cooked on the hot plate, are deliciously crunchy yet not overpowering. Sad that they don't give melon gum after your meal anymore though :( . I really like this restaurant, but because of the heftier price I don't have the liberty of eating here too often. Most of the side dishes that they serve are also tasty, except for the cabbage kimchi which on every occasion that I been, has never been fermented enough. What gives? Shouldn't kimchi be pickled? TLDR; This place was amazing back then but under new management it just sucks. Save your money and go somewhere else. Everything about this restaurant is different. Place is less packed, food quality dropped, and portions are a lot smaller. - Salad used to be a lot more fresh. Now it comes drenched with meager portions. - Pancake used to be a lot bigger, it used to be the size of the whole plate. - I ordered the Naengmyun (cold noodle). Absolutely horrible. Noddles were clumped together, tasteless, and rubbery. There was no meat, just straight up just noodles, slices of pear, and soup. Couldn't even finish it because the noodles were gross. - Only had a taste but the tofu soup seemed a lot more concentrated. Someone ordered a spicy and the soup was blood red. Felt like it was a bit too much. - Prices are super high for very mediocre food. (but that's to be expected... try smelling your shirt after you walk out of there) The seafood tofu was delicious, nothing wrong it at all. My rice came in a black stone bowl. I love the crunch rice at the bottom. The little appetizer dishes was good, but not great. I was hoping for more. But I know the variety of appetizers vary among restaurants. We also got 2 free pancakes w/ our meal. It wasn't quite as flavorful as others that I have tried. It was a bit oily as well. My fiance ordered the beef short ribs with the very spicy oyster tofu. He said the beef was nice and tender and enjoyed the way it was seasoned. But was disappointed with the very spicy, he thought it was more like a mild flavor (I wouldn't know though because I don't like spicy food in general, thus not ordering this or trying his). Took my dad here for dinner this past Saturday...he has never tried Korean tofu before so I thought I would take him to one of the better ones around Arcadia - since we were already in this area....I didn't really want to drive all the way to K Town for it. I haven't been here myself, but this place did proved to be worthy of my money. The service was awesome - very sweet (pretty too) waitresses and very nice waiters. they were super quick and friendly. The place was a tad small but my dad and I didn't really wait that long - about 10 minutes..this was around 7ish. they had a portable AC blasting behind me so it was all good when I consume boiling hot tofu soup and sizzling spicy pork. The food was great - like usual small side dishes accompanied the larger entrees - I ordered bbq beef (Bulgogi) and dumpling tofu for my dad and as for myself I had the oyster tofu and spicy pork. I usually never finish the food and even though it super delicious here I still didn't really put a dent into it. End up bringing most of the food back home. Overall the service was fantastic, the food was super tasty and really there isn't a reason why I wouldn't come back. I have a thing for fermented foods and I LOVE the kimchi here. The oysters are included in the kimchi which may not be to everyone's taste but I like how raw oysters give kimchi that additional fermented taste. I ordered the bibim cold noodle and the bf ordered one of the bulgogi + tofu stew specials. We could barely finish our meal because it was so much food. I love how they put thin slices of asian white pear in the spicy bibim noodle, it gave a great contrast to the spicy pepper sauce in the dish. The dinnner size of this dish will feed two (counting in the banchan included with the meal). OH and the green onion cake they give you here is BOMB diggity crispy. MMMMMM The bulgogi is supple, fatty, and well marinated when it came out on the sizzling plate. Try to eat it before you let it get cold though, it will toughen up. My friend mentioned the prices have increased but the amount of food given to you during the combination meals at lunch are excellent. Healthy portions. You do get a smaller bowl for the tofu. Soup. I ordered the bulgolgi and beef tofu combination for $14.75 lunch price. I have to say that the beef in the tofu soup itself wasn't that flavored but the soup itself was good. It wasn't ridiculously salty. Service is okay though because this place gets busy so you have to do the usual stalk/flag down a server for water, etc. The servers are kind though so that's good. My bulgolgi portion of the combination meal was decent. As in, they didn't give you small dinky plate of it. It didn't have that strong of a marinade but it was good. They give you rice in the hot stone pot with three peas for presentation. I love the side dishes. Healthy portions!!! Like they give a lot but they don't give out fried fish cake. San panda. But everything else like the bean sprouts, pickled cucumbers, and sea weed were plentiful. Between two people, we didn't need to ask for seconds on those. Parking is decent as in there's a lot but I would suspect by lunch time it's pretty crazy. I wants me some Korean food and I hads me some good Korean food at Young-Dong! But there are some funny quirks here at Young-Dong you might not find elsewhere. When you walk inside, there is a sign that says "Be Careful: Children Running". However, I did not see children running. When you are seated at a table, your table has a bell at one end to ring when you need service. Did I try the bell? No. So I don't really know if it works or if it is just there for decor. I liked their Tofu Soup, but the weirdest thing is that they serve the soup with purple rice. PURPLE rice! Luckily, I had tried purple rice one other time in my life made by my friend's father (older Chinese man) who said that purple rice is healthy for the body. So I dump the purple rice in the seafood tofu soup and it all tastes good. My friend ordered Bibimbop and it came in a sizzling hot bowl where the rice gets burnt at the bottom. Now we like us some burnt rice at the bottom! Soo good. The side dishes were good (fewer than I am used to) but the best one is the fish cake, which they ran out of. I guess people have been asking for seconds way too much! They serve you water in cups but keep a water bottle at your table when you need a refill. Ask for tea, I luv me some Korean tea! I've never been a tofu fan because of the tofu restaurants in Koreatown. So I wasn't optimistic about this place but I was wrong! The service here is 10x better than Koreatown and the side dishes are freshly made and not store brought. The tofu soup is not water down and the meat pieces are cut small and perfect for each spoonful. I love how they place the rice a hot stone pot as well. Just overall, this place is so good. Is this a chain? I've eaten at a similar place in Diamond Bad or Chino Hills that goes by a similar chain. There are subtle little differences here and there, but they are for the most part very similar. What I love about Young-Dong is the sides - especially the pancake! I really like the consistency and the way it tastes. It was done really well here. The location is in a little shopping center. The decor is nice and the lighting is nice, and they have a women's and a gender inclusive restroom in the back that are kept neat. The only reason that I reduced this by a bit is that the Korean Tofu Soup I had at AI Rang several days ago was comparably better in my opinion, and it was about the same price as this was. Consistent is definitely a huge plus here in terms of location to location, but there is better out here. I wouldn't see on this however - give it a chance! read more

Young-Dong will fill up your appetite. There is no denying that. No matter what you order, you will be satisfied and stuffed. It will fill you up with side dishes before the main course, and when the main dish comes, you'll wonder why on earth you decided to order this much. Man up and order the tofu soup spicy. Korean food is spicy in its very nature, and adds a ton of flavor to your meal. Never neglect the BBQ meat you order too. I've seen too many BBQ chicken, beef, or pork just sitting there while the tofu soup, raw egg, and rice get scarfed down. It's delicious, flavorful, and simply amazing. You will always leave Young-Dong stuffed and scented with Korean BBQ. Cost of admission? About $12-15 for lunch, and $15-20 for dinner, with Visa/MC accepted. Complaints about the line? Then don't come during peak hours (12pm or 7pm). The locals know this is the best Korean restaurant to go to, and will fill up fast. Inevitably, every Korean restaurant you go to after this will be compared to Young-Dong, in terms of quantity and quality. The vinegar seaweed is tasty and the kimchi here is the best around..hands down! No other place I know marinates kimchi with raw oysters :-) The BBQ beef is great here. Unimpressed. They seemed very disorganized. Huge line outside and 4 empty, dirty tables inside? Cleanliness is obviously an issue - the "B" rating is justified. The waiters were pleasant, however. They did not give us attitude when asking for refills on the banchan or on water, as other reviewers have mentioned. We had to ask for a lot of things that they should have brought in the first place - small bowls for rice and bean sprouts for example. This was the first KBBQ place my mother and I went to out of curiousity. It's still our hang out joint. It's small, but cozy and the service is okay. Just flag 'em down, I suppose. Though since going to Tahoe, I've realized that Young-Dong doesn't have *everything* in the way of kimchee, I still love the variety they do have. And their pancakes as appetizer can't be beat! I love korean tofu and have been coming here for years. my favorite is the clam tofu and the clams never taste dirty or old or smelly. always clean and fresh. if you get a combination tofu and sizzling meat platter your tofu portion will be less than when you order tofu without the combination sizzling meat such as chicken or beef ribs. awesome during the winter but i still crave it in the summer sometimes. read more

Visited this restaurant a few times now and after every visit, I've had to go to my next belt notch! The tofu soup is great. My favorite is the pork tofu but the beef + seafood combo is pretty good as well. And kudos to the spicy chicken dish! I was not really a fan of the Korean side dishes from other places but everything here was really good. All in all, this place is a definite thumbs up and 2 snaps in a circle kinda place! read more

This is very close to where we live so I come here anytime I feel like Korean Tofu. The wait is never bad and it is pretty family friendly. They always serve a good variety of the free appetizers. They also give their diners a free salad and they have the best salad dressing that they make themselves. I recommend getting their Kalbi combo with tofu.
