I come here when Alicia's Market is closed and need my turkey tail fix. It's also a lot easier for me to beat the 7pm closing time on the way home from work. I discovered this place a long time ago - like decades ago - but for some reason never found reason to be here until I read a Yeep's review for this place and realized the error of my ways. The person's review disclosed the Young's Fish Market turkey tails and said they are delectable! I agree! They are seasoned perfectly and are nice and tender, easy to bite into. Yes, there are bones but if you are Chinese and understand this connundrum, you will be just fine. They come in turkey tail size aka the turkey tail but you can ask to have them cut into bite-sized, small (long/narrow) or smaller chunks (large cubes). If you order by phone, they will want to cut them when you pick up so the meat won't be dried out. This place used to be a fish market but they discovered that their prepared Hawaiian foods were such a hit that they only focus on the Hawaiian foods. My other favorites: - Beef laulau - lots of luau leaves, nice size - Pork Laulau - lots of luau leaves, nice size - Roast Pork - scrumptious! - Kulolo - I used to salivate over this but found it contains petroleum-based vegetable oil so I no longer order it :( - Squid Luau - 0.25 or 0.5 lbs; very yummy - Pastele - I order these from time to time; tastes good - Chicken Long Rice - somehow I don't order this regularly; taste is very good - Poi - perfectly fresh - Lomi Lomi Salmon - tomatoes, onions, mixes well with poi! I ask my wife if she wanted to have Hawaiian food for dinner. First choice is usually their pork lau lau. But I remember that tbey have a butterfish lau lau. Today I picked up butterfish lau lau. half a pound of squid luau. and a half pound of ahi shoyu poke. A little disappointed at the lau lau. The luau leaves seamed a bit salty. The squid luau was passable. It had very little squid and I didn't taste any coconut milk. The ahi in the poke had many whitish looking pieces. It didn't seem fresh. Stopped in at Young's Fish Market and got the Big Al's Bento funny they call it that when it's a mini bento cause I can't see Big Al getting full on that, anyway although it was a mini Bento the mini Laulau and the portion of Kalua Pig was good enough to slate my appetite the laulau was tasty with good flavor and the Kalua Pig was good not salty as some places are. it was nice to have some Pipikaula in there which was tasty too, I enjoyed the sweet Potato chunk also. Parking can get a bit crowded during peak hours but can be found. I'm going to stop by again to have something else soon. read more

We came here to celebrate my Dad's 92nd birthday! He wanted to eat good Hawaiian food. Lots of free parking outside. No handicapped parking outside Young's Fish Market. Bathroom is accessible by key only. It's next to Utage restaurant. We got there early, so there wasn't much of a line. Cold water is available gratis. Look for Orange Water jug and plastic cups to the side of the jug. Two ladies served the counter. The tables were not cleaned when we arrived. We sat at a booth with spilled liquid on the table. We wiped it down before eating our food. We later saw a young man come to wipe and clean the other tables. By now it was getting pretty busy for lunch. We ordered quite a bit. My dad took home leftovers. He enjoyed the food and so did we. I forgot to take a picture of Big Al's Bento. It's exactly as pictured. Small size lau lau, pipikalua, scoop of white rice, purple sweet potato and a serving of kalua pig. The beef stew plate was also plentiful and it came with Mac salad and a scoop of white rice. The chicken long rice, sweet pickled onions and squid luau were also delicious. I would've liked more coconut milk in the squid luau lol. Tip- fountain drinks are refillable. I haven't gone here since covid started, and it's been a while since I updated my review. Young's laulau and hawaiian food is consistently the same. Their laulau is one of the best. My friend that has never ate here ordered their beef stew and said it was one of the best he ever had with such tender stew meat in it's flavorful stew sauce. I had to also order their squid luau because they make it so addictingly ono. We could eat in and will hopefully be going more often when we can. Whenever I go to Hawaii, one of my biggest priorities is getting good Hawaiian food that I cannot access in the mainland United States. Thus, whenever I visit Oahu, I always want to make sure I have a memorable meal that is distinctly Hawaiian. Young's Fish Market definitely appeared, on glancing Yelp, to be the type of establishment I was looking for. I saw that Young's had a variety of laulau, and also served purple sweet potato and poi. Thus, I decided to come here with my wife for my first meal in Hawaii. It's a very small establishment. We ordered at the counter, then picked up our food and ate it at our table. The people at the counter were very nice. We ended up ordering a butterfish laulau with pipikaula, sweet potato, poi, and macaroni salad. My wife was pregnant at the time and could not eat lomi salmon, so we substituted macaroni salad. The macaroni salad was fairly standard. I loved the poi, which was not too sour for me. The pipikaula tasted more stewed than grilled, and I am used to the latter. But it was still amazing. The laulau was one of my favorite parts of the lunch. The butterfish and taro leaves went amazing together, and the butterfish was melt in your mouth soft. The sweet potato was a purple yam, unlike commonly seen orange sweet potatoes in the mainland. It was not too sweet, and quite good. Overall it was a solid start to my weekend in Oahu. read more

I can always count on Young's Fish Market whenever I visit Honolulu! This is one of the places we come to for local Hawaiian food. This is where the locals eat. I always get their Lau Lau and roast pork with the crispy skin. They have other local delicacies such as turkey tails, beef stew, kalua pig, lomi salmon, chicken long rice. I could go on. Oh and huge bento plates. I arrived as soon as they opened; so I only ordered Roast Pork and a Butterfish Lau Lau which is served only on Tuesdays and Fridays. The Lau Lau was steaming hot. The taro leaves were cooked perfectly. It melted in my mouth. The butterfish was full of flavor from the taro leaves and super moist. The roast pork was full of the pork flavor you'd expect from roasting. The skin was nice and crispy, the best part! The pork was moist and a bit fatty. But it delivered! Young's has been around since 1951, originally started as a fish market. In order to increase supply of delicious food options and to offset slow fishing seasons, Wilfred and Charlotte Young added in delicious Chinese dishes. They then started cooking and serving Hawaiian and other local foods thus becoming the Young's market that we know and love today. I come here for the Hawaiian plates of laulau, lomi salmon, pipikaula, sweet potato and poi. I always end up adding a serving of their warabi (pohole) and/or sea asparagus salad and a side of tripe stew or squid luau. How can you not when there is so much goodness here! Food lasting a few days. In the last few weeks two people told me how good Young's turkey tail was so, of course today I had to get one of those too. Hahah. Dat bugga WAS ono...not really my kind of food but have to admit...delicious. Located in Dillingham Square right across Kamehameha Bakery (go there too while you are at it for the best poi donuts!) with ample free parking. My family had Young's cater some laulau for my mom's 88th birthday. As usual, we ordered way too much. Not Young's fault, but the laulau was huge... that's a good thing. Young's made it easy to order and were very helpful. The pork laulau was tasty and tender. There were a few chunks of just fat, but we expected that... it goes with the territory and it's up to the person eating it to decide if they are going to chomp it down. You know who you are. No shame. We did get a few people who started to get itchy mouth and throat. I didn't, but a few others told me their mouth started getting itchy. The store that started in nuuanu 70 years ago and still surviving. Turkey tails were roasted just right and not tough Laulau's steamed with the leaves moist with the belly pork not overcooked. Also you can add their lomi salmon and haupia for fillers. The cost has gone up,but the quality still there. Open for done in now. I did not like the poke here and would not recommend it. The beef stew was hearty and full of flavor (see pic) not really visually stunning but tasted great. Huge chunks of tender slow cooked beef, stew and poured upon a large bed of rice for $14.99 a plate. The turkey tails (see pic) are sold by the pound either chopped or whole for $9.95 per lb. Good flavor and cooked perfectly. The butterfish laulau was interesting and flavorful. Slow cooked to the point where the bones even melted in your mouth. $11 You place your order, pay at the counter, get your food and grab a table. Young's used to be the place to go for what I thought was the best char siu pork in town but as of recent, it's gone downhill. Not sure if they've changed recipes or cooks but the meat is not as flavorful or as tender as it used to be. This is the second time I've been disappointed with ordering their char siu. Randomly found this place on Yelp after landing at hnl. There was a line when we arrived. It slowly moved along. We had plenty of time to peruse the menu. We settled on: Butterfish laulau- 3/5 interesting, but not at all what I was expecting. And there were bones in it. Kalua pork: 5/5 wow one of the best Kalua porks I have ever tasted! Highly recommend this! The smoked flavor and texture yum! And not too salty too. We devoured this! Pork laulau: 4/5 I liked this better than the butterfish but I would stick to the kalua pork. Another new fav - Young's Fish Market! They truly have the BEST Lau Lau EVER! To be honest I'm not a huge Lau Lau fan as typically meats a bit dry and taro leaves are dry and bland. But at Youngs the protein is wrapped in a lot of cooked moist taro leaves that's some how seasoned and so tasty! And the protein is always tender... we tried their pork which they offer daily and we got their butterfish Lau Lau which is only offered two days a week! It was amazing! We also tried their beef stew and tripe stew. The beef so tender with chunks of perfectly al dente carrots and potatoes. And the tomatoey gravy is delish! But I think I liked the tripe stew more because... well... it's tripe! LOL! We also tried their ahi poke which was so fresh, along with their chicken long rice. Chicken long rice had a lot of ginger flavor and was a bit soupy where I'm more used to it not being so soupy but it was good to at least try! It's funny that the name of the place has "Fish Market" but they're known for their ONO Lau Laus. They have other proteins as well - pork everyday and butterfish, chicken and I can't remember what else on different days!! It's "to go" only. They have safe distancing and you order at the counter - and wait as they put it together. If tall enough you can look above and see the put everything together. Once it's all done you can pay. Insider tip - they sell gift cards at Costco! They're pretty reasonable already but hey you can even get more!! LOL.
