Sweesus, this place is BOMB. I'm relatively new to California and its slangin' ways, so I've reserved the word bomb for that one place or activity that really satisfies me. This place is it. I got the machaca and carnitas soft tacos and a small lemonade. The lady asked if I wanted complimentary jalapenos on the side as well. HECK YES! I tried my machaca (shredded beef) first. I liked that they reinforced the taco with two shells. After putting two cleanly-sliced, fresh jalapenos in my taco, I took a bite.... and promptly had a foodgasm. SO GOOD. The shredded beef was so tender and bursting with flavor. Absolutely perfect taco. My carnitas were just as good. I can't decide which one I liked better. Two tacos were enough for me, but I would love to come back and try the rest of the menu at Yuca's. Thank you for existing. I wish y'all had another stand in Santa Monica! As a visitor in LA, car-less and scared to use scooters helmet-less in the traffic, I walked 20 minutes in the midday heat to eat at Yuca's. Was it worth it? Absolutely. Yuca's is a family-run, James Beard awardee burger-taco-burrito stand that has withstood the test of time and gentrification. The line was short just after 1 PM on a Friday and so my time for indecision was limited. I made my choice- the Cochinita Pilbil Taco, a flat burrito stuffed with beans, Yucatán style pork, and a smattering of salsa. The burrito literally came out before I could put the change for cash in my purse (NB they take card too). I inhaled the burrito sitting on their limited patio seating right next to the parking lot, wishing that the burrito were slightly larger so the experience could last longer. My stomach was ultimately appreciative that the burrito was of a larger than average, but appropriate size. My only regrets were that I didn't find the spicy salsa until I was almost done eating, and that my stomach wasn't big enough to also fit a cheeseburger, alas. Yet another reason to come back to Yuca's in the future. Tourist tip: Yuca's is one block away from the 50 cent Dash bus that will take you to Griffiths Observatory. Food is good not great. Came to this place after hiking from Griffith park. Place is really small and kinda pricey for a burrito that taste like any hole in the wall place that sells Mexican food. Would not go out of my way to drive here and get a burrito. Had a asada taco which is good but would've been better if they had some sort of homemade salsa. All you get is tapatio salsa in a bottle on the table. Also had a carne asada burrito that for me had way more beans in it than carne. Place was good nonetheless. Parking was not to bad and there are tables to eat the food there. The only consistent answer out there is everybody seems to believe their grandmother makes the best. With that said, I make a killer mole. Overall, I'd have to put this one in the overrated bucket. The tortillas were fresh and it comes with a salsa of onions, tomatoes, and cilantro. (5) Machaca Taco/Shredded Beef $1.75 same as above (5) Carnitas Taco/Shredded Pork $1.75 same as above (7) Cochinita Pibil/Yucatan Style Pork $1.75 I thought this was the only one that stood out. It had more flavor than the other tacos. I may go back and try the burrito version. (5) Bean & Cheese Burrito $2.50 They use whole pinto beans in this one, which is a plus, but the the proportion of cheese to beans was insufficient. The beans were a little runny for me. But don't let appearances fool you, because this tiny taco stand is a humble, yet venerable Los Feliz institution that has been dishing up some of the neighborhood's best Mexican food for more than 40 years. I've now been here several times and have tried pretty much everything on the menu: tacos, burritos, and tortas stuffed with carne asada, carnitas, machaca, or cochinita pibil (slow-roasted, marinated pork that is popular in the Yucatan). They also serve bean and cheese burritos, hamburgers, and hot dogs. If it's your first time here, I'd recommend anything with the cochinita pibil. The meat is fork tender, extraordinarily flavorful, and is a unique, regional take on Mexican cuisine that you won't find at any old taco stand. The burgers are also seriously some of the best I've had. It's the kind of burger that becomes a big, goopy, gloppy mess about halfway in but tastes so damn good that you don't even care. I think the secret is their grill, which after 4 decades in business has become incredibly well-seasoned. This is a no frills type of establishment. I brought my boy friend who is from Mexico here and he refused to pay around $4 for a tiny taco because you can go to the taco man and get one for like $1. But I told him that this place is a must try when in Los Feliz! So we got a burrito for $6 something which isn't too bad... however my boyfriend said that the pibil tastes better in Mexico. I must say I'm a little bit shocked that this place is not much closer to 5 Stars overall. I grew up a mile from yuca's. I ate there with family since I was 5 years old. They have a great backstory. As far as I know when I lived in Los Angeles, the second location I preferred less than just the original stand on Hillhurst. The second location is a newer iteration. But I grew up smelling the beans cooking wafting across the hills to our house. and yes there's tons of great food in Los Angeles and I'm not saying it's like so so great that you would eat there every every day and at the expense of everything else to try. But this place is really amazing to the point where I went out of my way when going to Los Angeles for something unrelated to go there again because I had not had certain items there in so long. Let me tell you what to get. A lot of other good things but the essential items are, carne asada burrito. Machaca torta, delicious. I used to go the Smith's (now Albertson's) across the street for a 16ozs Pepsi and illegally cross Hillhurst to have my morning wakeup Carne Asada Burrito for basically most of the late 1980's and 90's,. my favorites at Yuca's are the carne asada tacos and the burgers with a good dose of jalapenos. i stopped by on a recent friday afternoon and if anything the quality is up though the prices have risen. but who cares? the food is made with care like your Moms. And the flavors are fresh and savory, I ordered the Cochinita Pibil Burrito and already had a Diet Pepsi to wash it down.
