Went back to Yucatan for a very belated Mother's Day dinner. We all started off with a drink. BF and his mom had margaritas and I had a pomegranate mojito. Delicious, refreshing and liberal with the alcohol, and the mojito I ordered was in a pretty big glass! BF heard me talk so much about the bacon-wrapped shrimp, so he ordered that and enjoyed it. His mom ordered a You Call It Burrito with chicken as her meat choice. You also can choose if you want beans, grilled vegetables, a type of sauce, pico de gallo, sour cream, guacamole, etc., in your burrito. When it came out, we all were amazed at how humongous it was. She took a bite and told us we both needed to taste how good it was. It was delicious and for $8.45 totally worth the price. I finally ordered the lobster enchilada which was so wonderful. It was in a nice creamy tequilla and lime sauce that added flavor but did not overpower the lobster. For $6.95, such a deal. If you want to add rice and beans, it is $3.75 more. I opted for that addition. I would definitely order that again. The service is always so warm and friendly here. That coupled with the great food makes this a true hidden gem in Seal Beach. Our "Y" alphabet dinner was at Yucatan Grill last night. We made the trek to Seal Beach to dine in what can only be described as a mom and pop Caribbean/ Mexican joint. There were Caribbean dishes on the menu as well as Mexican dishes. If you were looking for a fusion place, this might be it. Service was good. Our server maneuvered our party of 7 well even when there was another larger party that sat behind us. Their covered patio can get a little crowded if the restaurant is full. And it was full last night. We had chips and salsa at the table but it didn't have enough kick so I asked for a side of chopped serranos for extra spice. Our waiter recommended the habanero salsa which he brought out. We quickly poured it into the regular salsa we had on the table and we were happy campers. The habanero salsa had a delayed kick and after a few minutes I felt the lovely burn. It was tasty. I ordered the Jerk Chicken ($16.95) with black beans, Yucatan (saffron) rice, and a Sprite ($2.45). The chicken breast was butterflied and grilled. The jerk sauce was on the side. I can see why previous Yelpers had said that it might be dry. Butterflying the chicken will decrease cooking time so if the cook isn't paying attention, then the chicken will dry out. For the most part, my chicken was fine. The jerk sauce wasn't too sweet but all the spices linger on your tongue as you eat. It's more of a savory sauce which was fine by me. Others in our party also ordered some dishes from the Mexican menu but I only took photos of my jerk chicken. We also ordered the tres leches cake and upside pineapple cake for dessert. This place is hidden on the backside of the complex. The address is Pacific Coast HIghway but it's actually on Marina. It took me 5 minutes to find it! Once inside, I was very glad I found it. It's a small place that feels friendly, cozy, and informal. The service was superb and our server was funny, helpful, and anticipated our needs. A margarita was the perfect drink to start things off. I then ordered the sizzling beef tenderloin mojo. The mojo was a Cuban sauce with garlic, lime, cumin, and probably some other mystery ingredients. The steak was so wonderfully tender and, with that amazing sauce, was one of the best steaks I've had. We ordered the chicken mojo and a wet burrito. I decided to created my own burrito and go with the red sauce. The chicken mojo was a smaller entree than the wet burrito. My wife and I have visited this restaurant several times since first trying it, and it has become one of our favorites. Ive tried four different entrees and they ranged from very good to excellent. They are: Jamaican Jerk Chicken - Excellent Mojo Mahi Mahi - Excellent Mojo Steak - Very Good Cochinita Pibil (more on this later) - Excellent For me the marinade/sauce on the Mojo Steak had a strong citrus flavor and was too sweet for beef. I love this same sauce on Mahi Mahi. It would also be good on chicken and possibly even pork. The latest entree that I tried is the Cochinita Pibil. It is pork (like pulled pork) marinated in achiote and citrus juices and baked in a Banana leaf. The pork was super tender and lean. It's out of this world. They only serve this on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I've talked with friends who thought the burritos here were just OK, but I've not tried one. I've been extremely happy with the entrees I've ordered. I usually order black beans and Yucatan rice as my sides (both are very good). The chips and particularly the salsa here is excellent. The pitchers of Margaritas and Sangria are both good. The Sangria is a bit expensive, and he pitchers of Margaritas can be a little inconsistent. I've had really strong ones and weak ones. The kids meals are great, and the table cloths are sheets of butcher paper for you and the kids to draw or play tic tac toe while you wait for your food. The people who typically fill this place are locals, many have walked here and are taking advantage of Happy Hour, so it's possible you could end up in a drunken convo with a stranger. I've never felt so much prejudice from a human being in my lifetime. I frequent this restaurant often and have seen Steven working there but have never had him serve my wife and I. We asked to order our dinner when ordering drinks, but he said with disgust, "No, I need to put your drinks in first", left our table and didn't return for approximately 15 minutes. During that time, Steven was spending time with other patrons, laughing and sitting at other patrons tables ignoring us. What a horrible experience spending our 3 month anniversary. My buddy got the shredded beef with everything; he said it was really good but had some salty patches. He said he had the carnitas last time and thought it was Very good. I had the shrimp burrito (+$1.00) and it was TOTALLY worth it. There was a ton of shrimp in it. I think i estimated about 20 good sized shrimp in mine. The girl in our group got the lobster enchilada. She liked it but said that the tequila lime sauce was a bit much and kinda too sweet for the amount. The salsa was good and spicy, but the real story was their ghost pepper hot sauce. It is HOT, and I have a considerable high tolerance for heat. Went here today, looking for something fresh and different. We hit the jackpot with Yucatan Grill! The Crowd: quite mature, retired Seal Beachians, relaxing with a glass of wine or a beer on a Sunday afternoon The Vibe: as you might expect, laid back, relaxed, caz Now...the Food: I had the Sizzling Tenderloins with Mojo. This is a dish that comes popping and spitting hot on a cast iron pan. It's two filet mignon steaks, sauteed with garlic and onions, oranges and spices. The beef was perfectly cooked to order, tender, juicy and full of flavor. The slivered garlic and onions added the perfect kick, and I even scraped the bottom of the pan to catch the best carmelized heaven for my final bites. Wife had the Cochinita Pibil. Now, this dish is not for the meek. It's pork shoulder roast marinaded in a very special blend of citrus (orange and lemon, usu.), chile, and spices. The meat is cooked in a banana leaf, and tied up in a perfect package. The result of all this prep? Tender, succulent pull apart pork, with so many layers of savory, tart, spicy, kicky, and even a little sweet, that your mouth goes through the five phases of joy: anticipation, surprise, love, infatuation, and insatiability. Then, you realize that you ate so much chips and salsa that you can only dig halfway through your entree, even though you truly wish you could eat it forever and ever. JACKPOT! We never heard a better idea. Service is good. They were very busy on Sunday. When we went in (about 1:30 p.m.), there was only 1 or 2 tables open. They have a great happy hour every day, from 3 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.(?), so when we left, they were making room for the party crowd. My wife and I had visited Yucatan Grill a couple times for dinner... but today's visit was for lunch. I had the Mojo Mahi Mahi and she had the Mojo Chicken. I'll cut to the chase here... WE LOVED OUR FOOD! My fish was so fresh and tasty and my wife's chicken moist and juicy and delicious as well. We asked ourselves why the heck haven't we've been coming here more often! It will be a "go to" for here and I moving forward. The menu is broad and has options for everyone. Many healthy options for those looking for healthy food. We also had skinny margarita's that were awesome. This place is another Seal Beach gem and the locals know it.
