I came here on a Sunday around 12:30 and I just first want to say that this place is delicious!! It's located in a community kitchen so there's actually two restaurants located here (Laotian and Soul!). There's inside seating but there's not a lot of tables, especially if you have a large group. Luckily my group of 10 came before the lunch crowd so we were able to snag some tables. Both restaurants located in this shop seem to be super popular! The service was amazing and our food came out pretty quickly. The portions are pretty generous and the grilled steak is absolutely amazing. Their Lao crack sauce (the orange one) is a little spicy but so tasty. The other sauce was more on the bitter side so I wasn't a huge fan of it. First time trying Lao food! The curry soup is my favorite and then the crispy rice wraps, lastly the papaya salad. The medium wasn't as spicy as I thought it would be. The service here was very nice and I came a little before closing! The crispy pork skin that came with the papaya salad was really good. It's so good here but they're closing the end of this month. So sad! :( Not a lot of places around my area for good Laotian food and honestly wished more people knew about Laotian food and how good it is. Basically, if you like Thai food, you'll like Laotian food even better. The restaurant is a bit hard to find. The staff is so helpful and willing to explain any dish to you if you are new to lao food. The kitchen has a real neighborhood feel where everyone is friendly. It is small but I didn't have trouble finding a table. There is something for everyone on the menu. I ordered the beef plate which came with jeow (dipping sauce), grilled beef, and papaya salad. First experience with Laotian food and it certainly was a good experience. This place is located inside Lokels Only, a community kitchen. You know...one of those shared space type things, so when you drive by to look for it, don't expect a "Yum Salut" sign but a Lokels signage instead. We ordered two items: Pieng Xeen - grilled beef w/papaya salad and side of sticky rice. I especially loved the sauces. The sauce the papaya salad was dressed in was rated medium heat level and it had a nice kick to it. The grilled beef had 2 sauces that accompany it, one was a straightforward but pleasant sweet sour type sauce. The other was much more complex and pungent. I absolutely want to believe my palate is complex and so I'd have to go with the darker one. I have great appreciation for sauces, I was slightly sipping it. Khao Soi - fermented soybean w chicken and pork soup with large flat noodles and ground pork I presume. This was actually the name of the dish that led me to Yum Salut, I was originally looking for the Thai curry version but my interested peeked with the colors and displays from other Yelpers photos. Both items were rich in flavor and I would order them again. And I would also want to explore then menu some more on my next visit. Absolutely legit and phenomenally authentic Laotian food! From the portions to the prices, this is the place to go to if you want to try Lao street food for the first time or the hundredth - it's that good. My favourites are: - Lao sausage: Grilled/barbecued Laotian sausage served with sticky rice and Laotian papaya salad - how can you go wrong? - Lemongrass chicken: Comes with Lao papaya salad, sticky rice, and a giant piece of chicken marinated on lemongrass and grilled to charred perfection. Highly recommend these two, and if you're feeling up for it, get some laab (or larb) and enjoy a truly comforting Laotian meal - it definitely reminds of the food I would eat in Vientiane (the capital of Lao)! Enjoyed the Crispy rice, Spicy Lao Sausage, and the Sweet Sticky rice with Mango. He also had this side chili paste that was YUM and I sopped it up with my sticky rice. SO GOOD! My husband and I have never eaten at a Laotian restaurant before so we decided to give this place a try on a week night. To summarize, we left satisfied customers with happy stomachs. I love that there are an array of diverse places to eat in our neighborhood and was even more excited when I read the shout out of Yum Salut as a "not to miss" Laotian restaurant in Chinatown. During my childhood and growing up, Chinatown was one of the places that my family frequently visited. I felt like I proudly knew the back alleys, where my mom bought her rice with the wild poultry, where we often bargain shopped, the dim sum spots to the after hours spots and even the tea shops. Over the years, Chinatown has undergone many changes. As always, some for the good, some for the bad. Fortunately, Yum Salut is an extension of the ever-changing Chinatown LA landscape where folks no longer have to point you to SGV for the good restaurants. Don't get me wrong, there's still great gems there, but Chinatown is also growing to come alive again with gems of it's own, Yum Salut being one of them. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the cutest Laotian kids who offered to take our order and ended up helping out throughout the night. We were in the mood for noodle soups on a gloomy day. We got there at the last hour so they were already out of Khao Plak Gai and Khaopoon Nam Pa (which was also recommended next time), so we both ordered the Khao Soi and the Lao Refugee Sukiyaki. Again, my husband and I were impressed with our orders. They bring out the fish sauces (inc. vegetarian fish sauce available which is awesome and I've never seen before!) and the various hot sauces in case you want to kick the spice level up a notch. They usually make their dishes mild for customers but Laotians typically prefer spicy. I loved being able to try their Khao Soi, which was very different from the Northern Thai version, but just as yummy. They also recommended that next time I can order it with wide noodles, which I was delighted to hear about as that's my usual preference. I'd love to return to try the other items on the menu, especially their Mok Pa, which is my kinda jam :) It looks like the space is shared with two other restaurants, which is kinda cool, if you want options. The restaurant was clean and the staff were very friendly and approachable. Another plus was that the parking structure gates were up which is awesome for free retail parking in Chinatown. This pop-up is in a new building on the outskirts of downtown labs chinatown. There is paid parking in the building. This eatery shares a kitchen and dining area, both very small, with 2 or 3 other food establishments. They call their food refugee food, whatever that means. Aren't most refugees dirt poor, living in squalid camps? Calling it refugee food appeals to trendy hipsters who want to and think they are cool. Very pretentious. The food was subpar with small portions at such high prices as the joke goes. I wouldn't go back if you paid me as I wouldn't want to waste your hard earned money. I happen to love lao food. Not very many places in LA serve kao piak sen and they do... except they were out the day I ordered :( Their Thai tea was almost $8 which shocked me but the cup was dang near 32 oz lol so I guess that's worth it compared to boba shops. I ordered on Grubhub and when I went to pick up my order they said their iPad wasn't working so they never received my order and had to take it verbally from me and by showing them my grub hub receipt. They were out of the noodle soup I wanted and said to contact grub hub for my refund since they couldn't do it on their end and I figured that was such a hassle so I asked if they could just substitute it for something of the same price - which she did. Support small businesses! First time trying Laotian cuisine and it did not disappoint. The flavors were so intricate and full of depth. The Mok Pa was hands down my favorite dish. The fish steamed in the leaf with the veggies just hit, especially partnered with the sticky rice and lettuce wraps. Order the green thai tea which is delicious too to pair all the flavors together. My roommate and I agree this was one of the best meals of our lives, and we venture out a lot. I can't overstate how delicious it was. We split the laap gai (minced chicken, ~$16), the pun pa (fried catfish ~$13), and the hibiscus tea (~$8). We're pretty cheap but the prices were excellent given the quality and portion sizes. The attention to detail and presentation here was immaculate; incredibly flavorful with a nice level of buildable spice (we did medium). The spices, plethora of garnishes and aromatics, and contrasting textures of fluffy, crunchy, chewy were perfectly balanced. Highly recommend the pineapple ginger dipping sauce on the pun pa, and the condiment with the laap gai (I think it was fermented bean paste). The hibiscus tea was refreshing and sweet with a nice sour kick. The portions were VERY generous, especially the tea, which was monstrous (like, a bit too much split between 2 people). We were both super hungry and finished the food with some left over. One of the cooks (the chef/owner?) came out to ask us about our meal and was really nice. If you get confused about how to order (it's a shared space/kitchen), you just walk in on the left and ring the bell on the right side of the counter. Yum Salut boasts a menu called Authentic Lao Refugee Food, that in itself should make you head straight over there. It is in Chinatown sharing a location with Soulo's Kitchen inside Lokels Only. Parking available in a structure as well as meter and the hours are Thurs - Sun 11:00-7:00; Mon 11:00-3:00. There are 2 registers, Yum Salut is on the right hand side. Terrible experience. Staff was beyond disengaged with their job. Got the chicken plate and the mango sticky rice to go. Received a ball of rice wrapped in foil, chicken that had absolutely been frozen by how chewy it was, wrapped in foil, and papaya salad in a ziploc bag. How am I supposed to eat any of this "to-go"? No plate/box/utensils?? No telling when the rice was cooked. I spent $30 and barely had two bites and had to go get a second lunch.
