While walking and eating my way through the ID a friend said, "I need something sweet. What about the Yummy House Bakery?" Ummm... did you say YUMMY? Heck yeah! Just the name of this bakery alone deserves a handful of stars! It's not terribly big but they have cakes, buns, tarts, cream puffs and all kinds of yummy Asian desserts. My cream puff was massive but a wee bit stale. The cream also had that freezer/refrigerator taste to it. It was a cream puff though so you know I ate the whole thing anyway! I'm a fan of the spongecake here. Then again, I'm a fan of spongecake period. It has a delicate, mild flavor that allows me to lie to myself - it's not that bad for me. I also like the rolls which are sliced sideways, allowing you to see the spirals. It's a nice, light snack on the go. I also like ANYTHING with cream in it. Specifically, I like the cream horn. A nice shell, combined with creamy filling...bake me one of those and I'm yours! I really should get together with a pastry chef. The buns are decent - both sweet and savory. I'm a fan of cream buns for sweet and pork buns for savory. The only other thing I've had here are the fruit cakes. I like the concept but I don't think it's the best execution. DISGUSTING! We just went and the cashier was obviously sick and shouldn't be working while touching the pastries. She coughed over the open box of pastries we wanted to buy and when we asked her not to cough over the uncovered box, she said she didn't cough on our pastries but we have 4 witnesses. We asked if we could switch pastries and she got upset but let us. She never washed her hands after coughing and was short with us. Yummy is right. Great place to grab some buns for a lazy and cheap breakfast. Great place to grab some fruit & custard tarts and shove them in your face. Also a great place to eye-hump all the perfectly frosted and decorated cakes. Yummy has nice selection of tasty treats. I normally buy the cakes here because the cake is a soft sponge texture and not too sweet for the older people in my fam. The have all sorts of toppings but I usually get strawberries or mix fruit with the mocha. They use real whipcream so it goes real well with the fresh fruit. The only reason they don't get 5 stars is because the parking suck balls. I park my car on the street by the fire hydrant and I swear to God, that parking police are hiding just to get you!!! I must have taken less than 5 mins to pickup the cake but right when I came out, I see that buttwipe giving me a parking ticket. He was an asian brother, so I try talking to him but no...he was rude so must be a fake tan brother disguise as an asian. BTW...he gave me two tickets...one of the parking ticket and the other for a no license plate in front of my benz. DAM IT!!!! It'd be too easy to use the adjective "yummy," in this review so I'm going to refrain from it. It seems expected of me and I'd like to subvert expectations. They make a pastry called the "Sah-Yung" and it is a deep-fried ball of dough that resembles a cream puff (but hold the cream...) generously rolled in sugar and the inside of which is light and fluffy. They call it the Chinese Donut, which is very fitting. (But don't confuse it with the Chinese Donut served with congee though) If reading the words "cream puff" made you want one then you should try the cream bun with shredded coconut. But beware though --- it was too creamy for me. Just looking at it - it looks absolutely delectable, so very pretty. However, when consumed the cream coats your mouth with a "I think I just put a stick of butter in my mouth" feeling. However once we scraped off most of the cream, it was really good because the bun itself is really soft and sweet. I highly recommend getting the Sah-Yung, but pass on the cream bun with shredded coconut. Oh screw it, this place is yummy. read more

I have to be honest, I'm not a huge fan of Chinese delights. Aside from BBQ pork buns and egg tarts. Yummy House has some pretty flakey and tasty egg tarts. It has the perfect ratio of custard to crust. Their BBQ humbao is generous in size but the filling is not the typical semi sweet fluorescent red color that I've become accustom to. It's probably a good thing but I do like my meat somewhat sweet. My sister bought a birthday cake for my dad here last month and it was really good. It was light and not very sweet -- kind of right up the alley of the elders in my house. They did a great job decorating the cake too. Simple yet elegant. Now I can't speak for the cakes this place has, but the wife cakes that they had were cold and hard, as if they'd been sitting out for at least a couple of days. Oh, and did I mention that they were nearly 3 EACH???! Good thing I inly got 2. I tried asking one of the ladies who worked there if they sold kai zai paeng (little chicken biscuits), to which the lady replied no. When I tried asking if she knew where they might have them, she just rudely said no because she doesn't eat them. The cashier was talking to another lady the whole time she was ringing me up and it just came off as rude. The egg custards here are amazing! Flaky and buttery and just perfect. The pork buns were lousy, however. Maybe we caught them on a bad day but they A) had the tiniest drop of meat inside and B) the meat had no flavor whatsoever. I took my parents here and pork buns are pretty much their favorite food to eat. They said these are up there with the worst they've had. With that said, I'd like to counterclaim by adding there is nothing quick or cheap to baking legitimate sponge cakes, sweet rolls, savory buns, artfully constructed cakes with layers, mousses, fresh fruit & whip cream. None of that saccharin-y sweet, lard frosting found on a typical sheet cake. Their cakes I bring to work functions, dinner parties, bdays, seem to impress everyone. They are stunning to look at, but with delicious options as: mango/strawberry/blueberry mousse, fresh strawberry/napolean, mocha, green tea & chestnut, tiramisu cheesecake and more! Super reasonable prices from $12~$30 depending on the size. When I used to work in downtown, I'd hop in the tunnel and arrive just after 8:30, (technically aren't opened til 9am) but the door would be open and tables would be filled with elderly Chinese couples getting first dibs on goodies straight from the oven with steamy cups of tea. It's so darn cute! Try their basic sweet bun with a crumbly cookie-esque top (kinda like melon pan or soboro), it is delightful. LOVE their individual sponge cakes, I buy half a dozen and they stay light and fluffy for a week! Oh, and if I haven't gushed enough about YHB, their real milk teas w/tapioca are really, really good. They brew fresh unsweetened tea so the flavor is intact, but can also be customized to having no sugar, or barely sweet as I prefer. I dig this place, the owners are so sweet and always remember me when I come in. I bought four different kinds of cake yesterday to try out before buying the cake for our wedding. These are the four ones I got: Green Tea-Cake - the Green Tea flavor is not very obvious. You can taste a little bit, but it's very bland. It wasn't our favorite Tiramisu Cake - Although the flavor is not like the real Tiramisu, I'd say this one is my second favorite of all the ones we tried yesterday. The taste is very smooth in the mouth, It's almost like the healthier version of Tiramisu. I can't really taste the mascarpone cheese in here, but the flavor was definitely there. Mocha Cake - the flavor is just OK for me. Nothing stands out Fruit Cake (Sponge cake with fruit filling inside). - I must say from all of the ones I tried, this one is still my favorite. They have fruit filling based on the season. My favorite is Strawberry. I must go back again to try the other flavors they have before we finalize our wedding cake flavor. Wish me all the best... I noticed that most everyone on here is losing their minds over egg tarts here. And I'll be honest- I didn't even know what an egg tart was. So when I found myself in the international district the other day, it was on my list of must-do's: Buy and eat an egg tart at Yummy House. It was sweet and eggy and so delicious. I'm officially in the egg tart fan club now, hooray! I can't bring myself to give this more than 3 stars though, since later on in the same day I bought an egg tart at Duk Li for half the price, and it was tastier. o.o read more

I really enjoyed the custard-filled cream puffs for about $2.50 each! The custard was so flavorful and not too sweet! The lemon swirl loaf was also yummy, with a sweet cream filling! I'll give it to you, Yummy House - an Asian bakery that takes a credit card and is kept clean and located in a convenient place across the street from the old Uwajimaya, I'll give you the four stars. Sure you don't have the steamed BBQ pork buns, but your baked ones are sweet and filling. Your ham and green onion bun and hot dog bun are worth mentioning. Two of these babies make a very light lunch and it seems like your pastries are still warm well within the lunch hour. The bread is generally sweet and I love it! I hope to try more of your other pastries, and maybe even some of the single-sliced cakes that can satisfy that cake craving without the burden of ordering a whole cake to share with a party or to try and finish on your own. I love Yummy House Bakery! Not only is it literally a hop, skip and jump away from work but it's incredibly cheap. I have enjoyed the BBQ pork bun, green tea sponge cake, hot dog bun, egg tart, sausage bun, beef curry bun and some yuan yang to wash it all down with. No worries. I didn't try them ALL at the same time. That sounds a little too ambitious for my taste buds. But seeing as how most are under $1.60, at least I know my wallet wouldn't go bust...just my tummy! Leave it to Asians to get cake right. I hate American cakes... So sweet, thick, cloying. It's just way too much for me. The chestnut cake and mixed berry cake were both phenomenal. Perhaps a tiny bit heavy on the super fluffy whip cream frosting, but the flavors were light, subtle, and well presented. Some sort of distant family friend used to work there (I don't know if she still does) so when my father wants a cake for a birthday, he orders it from Yummy House Bakery. Which is one of the reasons I request no cakes for my birthday. The actual sweet food made from sugar, eggs and flour is fluffy and okay, but lacking an extra touch of vanilla extract. No, I did not subtract any stars for that because I don't expect culinary masterpieces from a bakery in Chinatown. My actual complaint comes from their Napoleon cake. I've had it twice now, and I have to admit, there is improvement. The first time, all of the flaky pastry part was burnt. The second time, only half was burnt. To make matters worst, the cream reminds me of reddi-whip. I advise that you don't order the Napoleon cake, stick the the Chinese fruit cake. Regarding the regular products, the buns are okay and the cake names are misleading. Don't try anything fancy; Yummy House Bakery is not a Drake song. I had my wedding cake done by Yummy House bakery. All the people all talked with were very nice. They took the picture I gave them and pretty much did the same with the cake I ordered. The price was very reasonable. They iced it in an ivory icing as I asked. I just had to give them my choice of ribbon to put on the base and flowers the day of to place on the cake. They delivered on time for a small fee. The cake itself was good, light, fluffy, and mildly sweet. I can't take too sweet of cakes. We had a standard cake with strawberry filling. They told me the the three layer cake would feed 120 guest. I had 160 and still had a whole bottom layer almost left. Asian guests I suppose don't eat much cake. read more

Growing up in a neighborhood of Southern California that was predominantly Chinese, I remember many of my friends had these delicious sponge cakes at their birthday parties. They were so light and just sweet enough, and always had delicious fruit toppings. When I started working down in Chinatown, I remember passing by this bakery every time I went to Shanghai Garden next door and would always remind myself that I should go in sometime. That time ended up being for a co-worker's birthday, when I ordered a vanilla/strawberry cake from them. Needless to say, my entire division now gets their cakes from Yummy House. Just like I remembered, these Hong Kong-style sponge cakes are really light, not cloyingly sweet, with the fluffiest frosting and freshest fruit topping. I find traditional cakes too sweet and almost always scrape off the super-sweet buttercream frosting they use, but the cakes from Yummy House are on a planet of their own. A few things to note: this place is definitely pricier than your average American bakery. An 8" round vanilla cake with strawberries was close to $20. They always have a selection of cakes you can walk in and buy, but if you want something specific, it usually takes an hour or 2 to make. The bases for all their cakes are simple: hazelnut, mocha, vanilla and green tea (I can't remember the others), and they have a variety of fruit toppings too. read more

This is the boyfriend and my favorite Chinese bakery. He likes the pineapple buns (which are pretty tasty!) and I love the sponge cupcakes. The sponge cupcakes are so light, airy, and just sweet enough that it's perfect. So perfect that you can scarf down about 5 of them in one sitting without realizing it....not that I, ahem, have ever done that. We also come here for moon cakes and all the specialty stuff you need for Asian holidays. It's a great place and we've always been treated well...even when I do the ordering (the boyfriend speaks Canto, so at other establishments he definitely gets treated better than I do). Overall: Not very impressive I know, I know the reviews for Yummy House Bakery are good - there must be something seriously wrong with my taste buds or something; even though I've had my LARGE share (and most other peoples share) of Chinese bakery items. We had visited here on one of our first visits to Uwajimaya, that time I had an egg tart, a Chinese specialty - even then I wasn't too impressed. Today, we revisited and gave them another chance. I chose my favorite - bbq pork bun, my other half had the bbq pork bun and a bacon bun. The bread was not as soft or moist as I would have liked and there was a lot of it, plus there was barely any filling. After about 2-3 bites, I managed to finally get to the pork filling, from the first taste of the sauce I could tell it had a lot of MSG in it. The filling was mainly sauce which wasn't overly sweet - that was good, but had very few pork bits in it. I have no idea what the bacon bun tasted like and had no inclination to try. However, the cakes looked great - just like the ones we used to get for our birthdays, ahh the good ole days! Next time I'll go to Mee Sum at Pike place for my next bbq pork bun/hom bow fix. read more

Yummy House Bakery has so many yummy treats! And, like others have said their egg tarts are great. They also have Portuguese egg tarts too and they're delicious. But my favorite treat here is their sponge cake. They're pretty sizeable and only $1.20. Recently I discovered that they have green tea and coffee flavored ones in addition to plain. The green tea sponge cake is now my top choice when I go there. Other notable treats I like are their barbeque pork buns, fruit cake (by the slice) and mocha rolls. A bonus star goes to the staff. Red bean pastry. Nuff said. $1.30 for the pastry is a fair price for the size of the pastry and the richness of the red bean. I also picked up a custard filled pastry and cheese filled one. Haven't tried them yet but will update this review when I do. The service was fast and quick but it's a Sunday so I didn't think it would be too busy. The ladies at the register were really nice too. The have a deal going on right now where if you buy 5 pastries they take 10% off your order, 8 pastries 20% off, etc. I got 8 for about $8.50 total. Not too bad in my book. It's a sweet bun with a hot dog in the middle. It's the best quick breakfast ever, and in the mornings the buns are fresh and warm. Hellz yeah. And when I need a sweet pick-me-up in the afternoon, I make a beeline to Yummy House for a piece of their feather-light sponge cakes with whipped-cream and fresh strawberry filling. So, so good. If offered any choice of cake for birthday cakes, I will always opt for an Asian style cake. They're light, fluffy, and airy, AND you can eat about 3/4 of it without feeling like you just developed diabetes. I called Saturday afternoon to request a cake for Sunday morning. I wasn't sure what types they offered so I simply asked for the most popular one (it was the mixed fruit one). It was ready early Sunday morning before 9 looking like a champ. Doesn't the name describe it all?? I love Yummy House. They serve up the best fresh mango cake I have ever tasted. Layered white cake with chopped mangoes and fresh cream on the inside-- overlapping petals of sweet mango slices on the outside. When we bought it for our friends' bday, everyone loved it....even my parents were impressed, and they are rarely impressed by food!!! The buns and pastries are also excellent. Can't go wrong with a delectable pineapple bun, a fluffy sponge cake, or an adorable fruit boat. The service is also friendly and accommodating.
