Don't bother reading all the other reivews of this place, just listen to me. The burger is good... it's nearly identical to Five Guys. I'd say on a given day, it's a toss up on whose is better. The only thing I don't like about the Z-Burger Bacon Cheeseburger is that they could be a *little* more liberal with the bacon, but it's really not that big of deal. The onion rings are retarded. Think funnel cake batter... so effing good. Definitely order those. The Banana's Foster Shake is..... it's..... it's REALLY delicious. Like, it's the best shake I've had in recent memory. If you like banana, this is the cat's pajamas. Overall, I'd definitely come back. Not sure why this gets anything less than four stars. "MmmmmHmmmmmm, this IS a TASTY BURGER" to quote Samuel Jackson's character in Pulp Fiction. He was speaking of the fictional Kahuna Burger, "that Hawaiian burger joint". Fortunately for us non-Hollywood types, Z-Burger is very real and very here in DC. Plus factor number one: the burger is handpacked. No pre-frozen hockey pucks here. Plus factor number two: the grease doesn't issue forth from the bun like termites from a burning log. This is a nice, juicy, low-grease burger. Nice job! The fries: I had mine "seasoned" which means Old Bay which means yummy goodness. The fries are NOT spectacular in consistency, but they do taste good. Some of the fries have a bit too much "fried" about them. You know, where the fry develops a particulate matter coating of deep-fry quarks and leptons and kinda has a crunch like an insect exoskeleton before you get to the actual potato endoderm. There are also tons and tons of them, a veritable panoply of potato pick-up sticks. Skins are left on, just as any God-fearing fast-food joint should do. All-in-all, this is a solidly good burger joint. It does not blow me away, but is definitely better than average, and the burger indeed rivals 5-Guys, if not surpassing it. read more

I have been meaning to give Z-Burger a try and armed with the free milkshake token I picked up at the last Yelp event and accompanied by always-ready-to-help-me-eat-to-my-death Alicia G. a trip to Z-Burger was on. I hemmed and hawed in (awe) front of the 50 milkshake flavor board. Thinking I'd make my decision easier by going for the daily special, I inquired to the girl manning the register. "Any three flavors," she replied. "Wh-what?" I stammered, with the panicked feeling that she had just complicated my choices further but giving me EVEN MORE OPTIONS. I appealed to her and the "shake guy" (her words, not mine) who helpfully tried to sort out my options (do I like vanilla or chocolate?). In the end he said the magic words ("reese's pieces"), offered to upgrade my shake and I was on my way. As I hadn't eaten dinner I took Alicia's recommendation and ordered a turkey burger, and I couldn't resist the onion rings raved about. See what I mean when I say that Alicia is ready to help me eat to death? The turkey burger was good - not bland and actually turkey-tasting, though definitely benefiting from the myriad of topping options. The onion rings were a revelation and a disappointment - the breading was different from your usual onion ring, giving it more of a greasy aftertaste with less emphasis on the onion and more on the breading, but they held together nicely when bitten into. And my shake? Good but nothing I'd trek out of my way for again. The shake was on the milky side, immediately drinkable and spiked with reese's pieces. Besides fries being not as seasoned, the burgers and fries are of comparable quality here as what you'd get at Five Guys. Would I eat here again? Sure. Would I travel out of my way to eat here again? Probably not. My burger taste swings to Five Guys and Good Stuff - thick, greasy patties that feel like a sopping mess of calories as you cram them into your open mouth. The patty at Z Burger was a bit thinner and decidedly less greasy and tasty. Really didn't blow my hair back. The fries were well-salted and ok, but again nothing spectacular. My milkshake - chocolate cheesecake - was pretty tasty, and I look forward to going back and trying another one of their 50 varieties. Not the best I've had, but a solid offering. After reading Alicia and Steve's reviews and being stuck at the office late in to the evening hours for the 4th night in a row, I called up the roomie and asked if she'd be interested in a little greasy guilt-fest of a dinner. She of course obliged (this is why we're roommates) and we headed up to Z-Burger. The design of the place is cool-- very open layout with a clean almost 50's vibe. We headed up to counter and found a menu nearly identical to Five Guys: hamburgers and cheeseburgers with a host of toppings to customize your meal. They had a couple of special things like "Z sauce" with no explanation of what exactly Z sauce was. The employee at the counter had a very thick accent to the point we couldn't really understand him, but he seemed friendly enough. The burgers were solid: a bit bigger than Five Guys and not nearly as greasy. They were out of onion rings when we were there (the horror!) but the seasoned fries were pretty good. We decided to make a super splurge and order some milkshakes for the ride home. After examining the very long list, I decided on chocolate marshmallow. It was... disgusting. Pretty much undrinkable. It tasted like powdery cake batter and I threw it out as soon as I got home. My roomie did the same with her chocolate peanut butter. I live equidistant to Z Burger and Five Guys and to be honest these places were really similar. But there's just something about Five Guys that makes me want to come back for more, so next time I'm in need of a splurge I'm pretty sure that's where I'll be headed. read more

Z-Burger's continued operation puzzles me of how eerily similiar it is to Five Guys. With the exception of a few cosmetic changes and the addition of a shake bar, Z-burger simply duplicates the Five Guys business model. But maybe the lawyers for Potbelly's are just more effective. It's been one year and the Potbelly's knock-off "Sandwish" is still "under construction." The reality is that Tenleytown desperately needed a good, cheap burger joint. And with the over-expansion and decline of Five Guys, who cares about the potential infringements of Z-Burger? Because Z-Burger is G.E.F. (good enough food). There are also several new items of interest including healtier options like the Veggie Burger (supposedly "DC's Best" by self-proclaimation) and the Turkey Burger both for $5.49. I am definitely a fan. I agree with Khalib B that the burger was not as tasty as Five Guys but chalk one up to the massive list of toppings (everything from the normal to banana peppers, jalapenos, A1, hot sauce, Z sauce, et al) to fix that problem. Juicy burger + fixings = My jam. I also got a birthday cake shake, which was hella good (yes I just said "hella", get over it). It was really sweet but if you can over look that, it was one damn good shake and actually tasted like a funfetti cake. The Good: *Onion rings are, indeed, the best you will ever eat; big, tasty and tender Vidalia slices that are beer battered (not crumbly at all) and fried to perfection. The Z sauce for dipping is a nice, spicy remoulade-style sauce that you can request to have put on your burger. Get these instead of the very typical fries. The A-OK: *Burgers are decent, although the ratio of bun-to-burger is a little too high for my tastes. Tasty toppings, although quantities can be off once in awhile; today, I had ten pieces of lettuce (I counted) and one measly pickle slice. *Milkshakes come in an almost-overwhelming amount of flavors; the standard ones (chocolate, strawberry) are my preference but you could find anything you'd like here, I'm sure. *Street parking is totally fine; often times we've found a wide-open parking lane on Wisconsin that made getting in to and out of the restaurant headache-free. The Bad: *Fries are substandard. We got them and while they were hot, they weren't very crisp and had no flavor whatsoever. *Cleanliness. It takes a full lap around the restaurant to find a clean table top at dinner time. The Ugly: *At least 50% of our order is wrong Every. Single. Time. I believe we've tracked it to the one cashier guy behind the counter. The first time, they gave us a casino chip for a free burger; second time, an apology; this time, pure insistence that WE were wrong. A simple "I'm sorry" would have been fine even without a fix, but all we got was At-Ti-Tude. Irritating enough that we won't be back at this location. Can't bring myself to give this place a 3. It's a blatant ripoff of Five Guys, only without peanuts and with the addition of terrible terrible onion rings and really expensive shakes. The burger is exactly the same as Five Guys, only with a little less flavor. If you like Five Guys, you'll like this. The onion rings were wet with grease, and the pieces of onion inside were so tiny they were negligible. Basically, imagine fried batter. Fries were about the same, pretty damn good. I've decided that the number of napkins you use while eating is a good measure of how good a burger is. How many do you need to eat a McDonald's burger? None. It's dry and they skimp so much on the toppings. But I needed 5 napkins to eat a Z-burger. The burger itself was juicy and came STANDARD with fried onions and mushrooms, tomato, lettuce, ketchup, mayo, pickles and mustard. All for about the same price as a McD quarter pounder which comes with NOTHING but a smear of ketchup and a few onions But Z, if you're reading this, EITHER KILL THE MILKSHAKES OR MAKE THEM BETTER. Seriously, your shakes are worse than McDonald's and who said you had to offer 120 flavors when everyone knows you're just using artificial ingredients and substandard ice cream to make them? I'm sorry, but it had to be said. Please get some GOOD ice cream and offer just a few flavors. As for the inevitable Five Guys comparison. I think the Z-Burgers are bigger and juicier. I love Five Guys too. I'd say the quality of beef is similar--both have never been frozen. The fries at both places are great. But you know I am starting see Five Guys joints opening EVERYWHERE and that fact alone makes me want to support Z-Burger (with just two locations so far) whenever possible. And another thing, come to think of it: I don't need a burger joint to be fancy--in fact I don't want it if it means paying more--but Z Burger has decent prices AND they hae made an effort with decor and lighting. Boring decor. I've seen those lights in every new restaurant for the past few years that wants to seem hip. The almost-outside area seemed like a good idea, but there's a creepy echo in it so it makes conversation sound strange. Yes, there are lots of choices of shakes. But that's because I'm pretty sure they just add flavor to a block of plain ice cream, which tastes almost like like butter. Couldn't finish mine without feeling ill. Cheese tasted severely processed; made the Grilled Cheese not even worth the low price. Onion rings! I love onion rings! Too bad these were way over-fried. The fried part didn't even taste like yumminess, more like eating solid oil. All in all, a disappointing visit to what I hoped would be a better option than Five Guys. Whenever I'm in town we ALWAYS end up at Z-Burger at least once, and though the 50-shake menu will keep me coming back just so I can say I've tried the majority of choices, I've gotta admit I'm never very impressed by anything else the big Z has to offer. DON'T WANNA HATE, but the burgers are just at par and the fries are pretty heavy and tasteless, like eating fried shoelaces, so much so that I can never actually finish them (pretty disappointing stuff for a guy who likes to devour every last one). Perhaps I haven't found the right combination of condiments (they offer many, from what I can remember), but going with the ol' lettuce, tomato, pickle, and onion, and maybe a special appearance by some Z-Sauce, doesn't seem to lift the burger past its mediocrity. The one bright spot on the menu at this joint is the onion rings, which are well-fried and oniony (as onion rings should be...? durrrr). Can't complain about the service--the people there are great--but every time I've gone the place is always so busy it takes FOREVER to get our food, which only adds annoyance to the fact that I won't be thoroughly enjoying the experience to come. buuuut like I said, I'll still be back for that endless selection of shakes. Z-Burger is "zee" place to go for veggie burgers. Why? Their savory, guilt-free patties are packed with bits of corn and black that's way better than the real thing. It's deliciously sandwiched between two soft sesame buns and comes loaded with tomatoes and lettuce and --what??-- sauteed mushrooms! And that's standard, believe it or not. I really wish I liked ZBurger more. It would be so convenient if this was an easy place to get a good burger. But I don't love Zburger. I think the shakes are mediocre. I think the fries aren't crispy enough. I think the burger is fairly flavorless until lots of toppings are added, and then, invariably, the burger falls apart. I came. I saw. I was conquered by a really good strawberry cheesecake shake. Hot damn that thing was good! It tasted just like its name implies. I swear I could taste pureed graham cracker crumbs. It was made even more delicious by the fact that it was FREE. Thanks K St Kate! Despite the crowd, the workers were able to herd us quickly out of line, off to the side, and then not too long after served us our treats. The fries were decent. The onion rings could use more onion but the beer batter is scant and that's a good thing. I hate eating a big piece of fried dough unless it's a funnel cake or a donut or an apple fritter or a....well you get the picture. I need to duplicate whatever is in the dipping sauce they give you. Enter Z-Burger's latest addition to the menu, along with much hype, the veggie burger. Yay! Not worth the hype. It's still a fast-food burger, with all the negative connotations that label brings: messy, rather tasteless and dominated by the bun size, and more expensive than beef. I love a good burger, I love some good fries, and I love a tasty milkshake. So Z-Burger pretty much nails it. I don't understand all the people saying their burgers are bad compared to Five Guys'... I don't taste much of a difference. I always get the double cheeseburger with lettuce, BBQ sauce, and Z-sauce (boring, I know... I've heard the fried onions recommended, but I haven't tried that yet). For drinks, I get a milkshake (I'm a fan of the cookie dough and maple walnut flavors) which really doubles as dessert. Fries? The regular size is enough for two people. It runs me about 8-9 bucks to get a burger and a shake, and it's worth every penny. The patties are very good quality, with very few of those pieces of meat that appear in poor quality meat that are pretty much impossible to chew because they seem to be like mushy bone. Nope, none of that here. Fries are consistently pretty good, not the best I've had though. Shakes are tasty. Prepare for a slightly long line (at least for burgers) during the lunch and dinner rushes. read more

Continuing my Summer Resolution tour 2010, a friend and I recently checked out Z-Burger. Had it not been for the alluring promise of dozens of shake flavors to choose from, it would have been difficult to drag me down here, as I'm just not that much of a burger person. However, seeing as it was lunchtime, I did have a hamburger, which I literally found to be just okay. We shared the 1/2&1/2, which is a large side order of both fries and onion rings, and definitely a clever offering. After lunch I treated myself to a chocolate malt. I loved the fact that they offer shakes in two sizes, and certainly choosing a flavor was not easy. Sadly, the shake barely contained any malt flavoring. My friend's peanut butter cup, however, was fantastic -- vanilla ice cream, with loads of little pieces of chocolate peanut butter cups in it. Most of the employees were friendly, which is a definite plus in DC. Not a place I'd rush back to, but if I were in the neighborhood, I'd definitely stop in for a shake. read more

I got in a fight at Z burger. It was more of a verbal spar. Actually, it really was just me yelling at some high school kid who threw a pencil at my friend. I picked it up, sashayed over to their table, smacked the pencil on the table, and mocked him mercilessly for looking like a poor man's Opie from the Andy Griffith Show. It def was not my finest moment but whenever I drive by the Z, I think back fondly of how I schooled a 14 year old. To score some useful points, I will say that the turkey burger is decent. It's no wagshals but it satisfies my burger cravings. I'm a toppings kind of girl so after some cheese, jalapenos, shrooms and zsauce , I'm pretty happy. The turkey burgers take a bit longer to cook so you might want to order in line first if you are with a group. The fries are yummy too, but then again if you make me something that even remotely resembles a fry, I will eat it. The small is plenty for two people. I'd say the only negatives are that the waiting area to place and pick up your order is very cramped. They don't have an orderly system for calling out numbers so it can be hard to hear when the Wilson High kids roll in. I think the milkshakes are a bit overrated but that might be because they overstretch with so many flavors. This isn't really a negative but more of an observation. The owner is very friendly. He has also made a thinly veiled attempt to get Obama to come eat here. Yes, he and Michelle have made the stops at Five Guys, Good stuff, and Ray's. I have already reviewed Z-Burger (the Southwest DC location), but after my most recent meal at the Tenleytown location, I was compelled to update my review. The other night after work, I was moderately hungry and ordered two hot dogs. I craved a side of fries or onion rings but I wasn't quite hungry enough to order a regular or large size (either could feed a small village). I playfully complained to the order taker about the lack of a small size on the menu. To accommodate my sentiment, she asked if two onion rings would satisfy me. Surprised by her offer, I happily said yes and she charged me just under a dollar for them. That's the kind of customer service that will keep me a true fan of this place.
