I got the sweet potato sushi roll (6 pieces of sushi) plus Szechuan string beans. My friends ordered the Shanghai chicken and the chicken with broccoli. White rice is included. The string beans were at the perfect spice level. Garlic and green onions complimented the dish. One of my friends got the chocolate cocktail. That jaunt was nice and creamy. Everyone liked their food; however, it took a pretty long time to receive my sushi. It's okay though. The inside of the restaurant is super nice. They had two flat-screen, HD, LCD, blah blah blah televisions. The Nationals game was on. We won 7-0! We beat the Minnesota Twins. We left at like 5:45PM, and the restaurant was getting packed. The older asian lady at the counter looked at me like I was asking for a free meal. She put one in the bag, then I reminded her that I asked for two and even offered to pay for the second one. Not much to say. It's like they are trying to be three different types of Asian American sushi restaurant in one. I'll agree the atmosphere is pretty striking, and the overall decor is nice. Where they are lacking is in their sushi. The rice is bland and extremely dry, and damn near every roll tasted the same! I love sushi, and I'm not a complete sushi snob... but fishy mayo lameness! I thought I had already done a review and today would be doing an update, but seems I had forgotten to do a review. Here goes... Zen Asian Grill was my favorite place up until last evening, Let me start with the most recent events and I will work back. Last evening I went in for some of my favorite food. I ordered the Honey crispy chicken, which I really enjoy. When they served it to me it was very bitter and vinegar tasting, so I had to tell them. Very politely I pointed out that the meal taste very different than the many times I had it before. The lady asked me a number of times, "So, it taste different? you had this before?" To which I politely answered. They took it away and went back into the kitchen. They returned about 10 minutes later and said the chef forgot to put sugar in it. That is all she said. "Then she said you want another?" To which I stated yes. She then walked away. Now you have to understand my issues here....At no time did anyone say they were sorry AND it took over 30 minutes (15 to get this resolved and another 15 to cook a new batch). During this time I had NO meal. I was fortunate that I was with my wife and not a friend or business associate because I was able to eat her meal. In fact, I just had them wrap it up instead of even serving it. At first this did not bother me, but after going home and thinking about it I am bothered....They charged me full price for everything. I don't expect them to jump through hoops for me, as you can all see I eat out a lot and review many places. I just thought that since I never really got my own meal at the restaurant, maybe they would take a few bucks off or offer a free dessert or something...better yet, how about the words "we are sorry for the inconvenience!" I never received an apology!! Now they have moved into RUDE! I am very understanding that people make mistakes and very nice about that, but how about customer services. This place does a great job with the nicey nice stuff "hello!" "thank you" Have a great day." But horrible when an issue arises!! Although this is my favorite place for martinis and Asian cuisine, I will have to say I will not go back. I just feel that this shows that their commitment is to their own wallet and not the customer, that offends me! I am happy to support a business's wallet, but there is a proper way to treat your customers. There are many places I can go to get good Asian food an drinks. Skimpy portions, haughty staff. Avoid! I came here for lunch recently because I had been before and had had a good experience. Something has definitely changed! I ordered the Shrimp & Scallops in Garlic Sauce. $8.95 with soup and egg roll. I am gluten-free and nixed the egg roll, and asked for Chicken Corn Soup. What I got was Egg Drop soup with no chicken or corn in it, and the waiter lamely trying to pass it off as "cooked into" the soup. Why not just say you're out of it instead of serving me something else and then lying to my face? The "entree" was 60% rice, 35% green peppers and onions. There was ONE shrimp and two scallops. (I guess I should have taken the "Shrimp and Scallops" title literally.) It was served in a bland brown sauce that was not garlic sauce. I complained and the manager came out and insisted that this was the "lunch portion." He refused to do anything to improve it, so I changed to the Kung Pao Chicken, which was once again in the SAME featureless brown sauce. This is what you expect at one of those cheesy mall Chinese food stalls. I think a while ago they must have lost their cook, their manager and their minds on the same day. When you step into the glass doors of Zen Asian Grill an ambiance that juxtaposes the feel of feng shui and an upscale modern restaurant immediately welcomes you into this gem of an eatery. Once inside, you could as easily imagine that you were dining in downtown L.A., Chicago, Honolulu or any metropolitan in America. I was greeted promptly and took a seat at the sushi bar. I started with the obligatory Sapporo beer and a couple appetizers: Fried Shumai and Tuna Tartare. The tuna was delicately cubed and tossed with diced avocado and garnished with sliced cucumber spears. The fish was seasoned lightly with a spicy sauce that complemented both the avocado and tuna. The Fried Shumai was a textural masterpiece that I especially enjoyed. The dumpling was fried perfectly giving each bite a satisfying crunch before reaching the soft shrimp filling. I consider myself a lover of sushi and have experienced some of the best Hawaii and Tokyo have to offer. As a result, I'm often skeptical about Asian fusion restaurants that add a sushi bar to their establishment to con the average American into ordering overpriced California Rolls that are over garnished with colorful sauces and fish eggs. So of course, I decided to order sushi. As recommended by my server, I tried an "off the menu" specialty called the Hot Hot Hot roll that consisted of shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, a trio of hot sauces and a garnish of a sliced miniature jalapeno with a dab of sriracha.....simply Amazing! The layers of flavor and spice melded masterfully. For anyone who is a fan of heat and then some, I would recommend this roll again and again. In addition to the roll, I ordered five of my favorite nigiri: sake (salmon), hamachi (yellowtail), saba (mackerel), escolar (white tuna), and toro (tuna belly). This would be the "tell all" of menu items because the fish would speak for itself, no fancy sauces or ornate garnishes, just rice and fish, exactly as it should be, fresh and raw. The nigiri style sushi was simply perfect. Each fish with their delicate and distinct flavors melted in my mouth as good sashimi always should. Zen Asian Grill is a Burtonsville jewel. It is both modern and warm without pretention with exceptional service and delicious options. I intend to be a repeat customer and will continue posting recommendations on the new menu items I try over the next few months. read more

This is probably the best sushi place in Burtonsville. Take that with a grain of salt, however, because this is probably the only sushi place in Burtonsville. If you're not from the area, Burtonsville is about twelve buildings wide. Not to discredit the food, however. Zen's sushi is quite nice. I find it a little small for my tastes, but your mouth won't be able to tell how big it is once you're shoveling delicious sushi rolls into your gut. Spicy salmon roll and dragon roll are my go-to rolls, but odds are that you'll take the conservative approach of a California Roll, hold the avocado. Those are good too, I guess. The typical "chinese food" stuff was less impressive, like the dumplings and crab rangoon- but those Singapore noodles are the truth. They also have some pretty good combo specials if you enjoy eating food, but lack the money to pay for a ton of it. The biggest drawback at Zen is the service. 80% of the time I come here, I have a server who apparently just started serving tables twenty seconds before greeting us. A few problems with wrong orders coming out, or empty drinks. They're nice folks for sure, and the managers seem more experienced and friendly- but they could use some consistency with their staff. There's still a lot more plusses than cons, and the decor is refreshingly modern and new for the Burtonsville area. You will most likely enjoy yourself, even if you're too scared to try fried eel rolls (do it!). read more

Finally went back after a bad experience with a waitress. The attitude of all of the staff was amazingly geared toward the customers. We were greated cheerfully and seated promptly. I recall visiting here about a week after they opened. Like all places, striving for the best customer service & great food is a given. The kids and I were sat in the last section by the window. The place is nice, decorations & water give it that "Zen" feeling. Tried the spring rolls, they were fine nothing to rave about. Tried the General chicken, you'll get huge pieces of white meat. Sauce and spice level is perfect, enough for two people to share. My son tried the crispy chicken. It's pretty good too. So why the three star rating? I don't like inconsistencies. I also don't like those to argue with me. 1. First visit was fine, we could sit where we wanted to with a high chair. 2. Second visit, the young Caucasian waiter (only one in there) argued with me about my order. It wasn't General chicken but was Orange Chicken. The sauces look a like, and trust me the taste is very different. Not only did he tell me it couldn't have been orange chicken because he poured the sauce on it himself. My argument back was and perhaps its mislabeled? It got serious, I made him taste it. Guess who was right? 3. Yesterday we went, and my 2 year old wanted to sit by the running waterfall. Section had two families. Middle section with tables were empty. She proceeded to take us down the first aisle by the window. I quickly asked can we sit here? She said "We have sections for kids" I quickly asked her did they have certain sections for races too? lol To have gone there THREE times? To be sat in three different spots very opposite of each other tells me no such thing exist. Great Sushi! Nice spot for lunch. Get the General Tsao or Kung Pao lunch combo. It comes with fried rice, Spring roll, and either soup/salad (can substitute for a can of soda). I usually pair that with a California Roll. 6 large pieces make up the roll. The staff is friendly and knows I'm a slow eater so they'll bring my dish out before the rest of the people in my party. Zen is much better dining in than carrying out. Also, avoid the non-Chinese dishes like their Thai options. They are obviously far from the chef's specialty. read more

I've been here twice and gone for the sushi both times. Impressive decor, good alcoholic beverage selections, amazing sushi. This is Burtonsville's best chance to get you laid. This restaurant serves both Chinese and Japanese (mostly sushi) food items. The reviews of the Chinese food are only so-so. It basically looks like standard Chinese restaurant fare served on nice extra large plates. Nothing too special. But the sushi! Soooooo fresh! The sashimi platter is amazing. Normally, when I get a sashimi selection it's all about the salmon, tuna comes in second, and everything else is tolerable. But all four fish selection on the sashimi platter were incredibly fresh, moist, and tasty! I fear I will always order this and not try enough of the other menu items. The maki rolls, miso soup, and japanese salads are also excellent. It seems like the Chinese fair is bringing in about 3 stars and that the sushi is netting 4 or 5 stars. Go for the sushi! Update: Been back a few more times. If you are a vegetarian ask for the secret vegetarian menu. They have some amazing vegan mock meat dishes like General Tso's "chicken". They also have mock shrimp dishes, but they do not compare with the fake chicken ones. Update 2: Been back plenty of times. The mixed drinks have been a little more inconsistent lately and while they seemed to go all out on the sushi (presentation and freshness) before they seemed to have slipped a notch lately. Best sushi I have found locally! [Update: until I tried Capitol Sushi, which would get a sixth star if there was one, so make that best in the MD Burbs] Heard the gulls and smelled the salt water! Disclaimer - I have not yet made it to Makoto. Nevertheless, best since the legendary Sakura Palace. The architecture is modern, cupola ceiling and dark wood with some rows of curved pieces that suggest the ribs of a ship. I ordered the chirashi, a 6" bowl with pieces sushi toppings and tidbits of vegetables over a bed of sushi rice. The rice itself was properly seasoned and textured. All the seafood was fresh, sweet, and delicious - .even the tomago, which I usually find as insipid as tofu, had a bit of flavor. Miso soup was good, medium bodied with a bit of seaweed as well as the usual scallions and tofu. Teensy quibbles: no draft beer, could have used a saucer to discard the citrus and shizo garnishes. I'll be back again and again as long as the quality holds up. read more

My son raved about the sashimi platter. A girlfriend and I met here for a drink one weeknight (she lives in DC, so Burtonsville is a good halfway point.) The atmosphere was lovely, true to the name -- trickling waterfalls, low lighting, plants and soft background music. It was nearing cherry blossom season, so I was intrigued by their cherry blossom martini. "What's in it?" "Cherry blossoms," the waiter replied, straight-faced. (His English wasn't great, and I think he may have been confused by the question. But I'm fairly certain there was no actual cherry blossom in the martini.) It was interesting and vaguely fruity, but much too sweet. That's what I get for taking a risk! My friend had a different martini, which was much more palatable (I can't remember, and their drink menu isn't online.) After talking for awhile, we were a little hungry, so tried their sushi sampler -- it was 4 different, generously sized pieces of sushi for $9, so not a bad price. The fish was fresh and beautifully presented. Next time I'm in the area, I'd like to try them again and order a few more menu items. If nothing else, it's a beautiful place to sit! read more

First off, the wait staff was very friendly. We were given a choice of seating between two tables, which was nice, one was crowded, the other a bit less patrons nearby. We choose the latter. The decor is nice with large open ceilings and an appealing water fall at the entrance. Our waitress was prompt with our water and gave us ample time to decide on our meal selection. The food was DELICIOUS! We got the Buddha bowl soup and it tasted fresh and very warm. The waitress served both of our bowls for the first serving. We also got the Kiss of Fire Roll, Spider Roll, TWO Lasgana Rolls (you MUST try this!) and some red bean ice cream to go. The place was busy at some points and loud with people talking but nothing rude, just a friendly atmosphere. Our cups never ran empty and the water had fruit in it (cherry, lime, orange and lemon) which gave a nice subtle taste to it. When we left the restaurant, the entire staff was pleasant to us and said goodbye and thank you. I will definitely go here again and definitely get another Lasagna roll. read more

Local resident of burtonsville and my family frequent this place often. The atmosphere is tranquil and lovely, the wait staff is attentive and the manager knows us by name. My son and I eat the sushi every time we go and have never been disappointed. It is the single best sushi place in Maryland, and Ive been to a lot. My husband is not a sushi eater and he also raves about their sesame chicken and wonton soup. Their wonton soup is soothing and delicious. I've been here twice since it opened and both experiences left me thinking, "Meh. I've experienced better" just like the yelp rating. I was super excited when I heard about this place and had hopes of getting some decent American-Chinese food without venturing to Wheaton or Rockville, but it looks like I'll be making those trips when I have a hankering for Chinese food. First time I went, we decided to go for variety and get a little bit of everything which included: 2 rolls, a General Tso's, and Pad Thai. I wasn't pleased with the sushi rolls at all. I found the rice to be too mushy which is a major no-no for me. The General Tso's was alright. Nothing to rave about. Personally, it was more sweet than spicy (meaning it wasn't spicy at all), but on the plus side it wasn't overly fried like I've had at some other places. Finally the Beef Pad Thai. Now, for a fusion place, it wasn't half bad. Definitely not the best Pad Thai I've had, but I wouldn't discourage one from ordering it. Overall feel for the first time was: Eh, I'd give it another shot. Second time: Decided to go to lunch with a friend. They got Chicken Teriyaki with a Cali Roll and I got the Orange Chicken lunch special. The sauce tasted the same as the General Tso's I had last time, but with a few orange peels in it. Again, it was more sweet than spicy. The hot and sour soup was... eh. It had all the essential ingredients but it just lacked the taste of what I know hot and sour soup to be. My friend agreed with me about the sushi rice and said the chicken was a bit bland. As great as the decor and the service is, it's not enough to make up for where the food falls. Out of convenience I may come back when I have my General Tso cravings and ask them to make it extra spicy since Zen's is so close to where I live... and I've sworn off of Hunan Manor in Burtonsville (long story). Everyone's experience is different. I've had friends come here and tell me that they love the food and things were spicy for them, but as someone who is Asian and loves Asian-American dishes, it fell short for me. read more

I came home for the holidays and checked this place out with my family. When you walk in, the place is really nice!! There is a glass wall waterfall and the ambiance is really cool. The food is on point and lunch specials are ridiculous - $7 for a meal that includes and entree, soup, fried rice and a spring roll! They even had a vegan menu and sushi lunch specials! The only downfall is the service.. Not sure what was going on, but they were really slow or too hasty.. The waitress took forever to take our orders, but took away my miso soup before I finished eating it! If you have a leisurely lunch break, I'd definitely come here.. The food is worth it! read more

Decor was great (loved the waterfall on glass effect). Food was good: lasagna roll is a must try! Really good stuff. Singapore noodles= great stuff. Mongolian beef was ok. Lettuce wraps with chicken were excellent. Rum cocktail (forget the name- hiccup) was also excellent and decent in size. My only qualm is the staff. It wasn't that busy, but they forgot one of the appetizers for the table. At least we weren't charged for it. Hmmm bad restaurant! Cold miso soup! Hot sake with no alcohol due to microwave usage! Not recommending it at all. Decent sushi tho!

As a few reviewers have stated, I feel like the quality has gone downhill. I have frequented Zen pretty much since they opened, and have always had good experiences. The last several, however, were not up to par. And last night, well, the food was flat out gross. My miso soup had absolutely no flavor, nor did my egg roll. I thought maybe it was just me, but my husband agreed that the egg rolls tasted like cardboard. What really got me, however, was the sushi. I ordered a rainbow roll, and noticed right away that the color of some of the pieces were off (sort of grayish). I ignored my gut and ate anyway, and what I got was slimy and very soft sushi. Again, my husband tested it, since he will usually eat anything, and he agreed that the fish was a very slimy and soft consistency. I don't know if it was not fresh or what. I ended up pulling the sashimi pieces off and just eating the california roll underneath. For a $50 meal, it was extremely lackluster. I won't be giving Zen any more tries after that experience. read more

Absolutely TERRIBLE ...ive been here 3 times, the last time is my last....slow service with an attitude (even though there were more employees than customers in there), below average food for instance my "rainbow roll" was a california roll with bland raw fish draped over top, luke warm miso soup, no chopsticks no mixing ramekins nor sharing plates with our "platter" of sushi, no refills on our bar drinks And to top it off our elderly waiter (in his 70's-80's) gave us attitude and wouldnt even make eye contact with us...though we could see him laughing it up with his co-workers at the bar...so he obviously wasnt impaired, just absolutely indifferent...spent 90% of his time laughing and engaging his co-workers at the bar...we had to flag down a young lady to get things because our waiter was busy at the bar with his hands behind his back.....literally Terrible experience, embarrassed that with all the available sushi places around I took my family here of all places...100% because of the decor...dont let it fool you, the food is what youd get from a supermarket sushi section...this place doesnt know if it wants to be a Chinese food carryout or a sushi restaurant...jack of all trades master of none read more

The first time I had sushi here it was delicious- or I was really hungry after a long work day. It seems a bit pricey for just 2 rolls but I was really craving sushi. The second time (see attached photos) I was a little less satisfied. In the first photo, the sushi look full but as you can see when I accidentally flipped one over, I realized that over half of my rolls were not full. First time trying Zen. The server was prompt, friendly. The food was a bit over salted, but I would go back to try something different. At least I thought I would until I asked for a container for my leftovers. The waiter returned with a tiny, clear plastic container, similar what you would get at a bakery. I would never put hot food in that container, it would melt. I asked for a different container and was told that they would charge me a dollar for a Better container. I was so surprised to hear that . I didn't want to cause a scene and I accepted the container. A little while later I excused myself and searched for the manager, She stood her ground and said that's the policy.
