What can I say? Then we found Red Dog Saloon in Ketchikan, and suddenly Alaska made a whole lot more sense. This place was one of the highlights of our entire trip! The people were awesome, the bartenders were fantastic, the music was great, and the atmosphere was exactly what you hope to find in an old-school Alaskan saloon. And the DECOR?! There is stuff EVERYWHERE--on the walls, hanging from the ceiling, probably hiding under the bar. You could spend half your visit just wandering around looking at everything. And then there's Wyatt's gun story... Apparently Wyatt checked his gun when he came in, but his boat left early--before the saloon opened--so he never got it back. Honestly, that might be the most Alaskan vacation story ever. There were locals mixed in with the tourists, which made it even better. And somehow, despite being cruise-ship tourists ourselves, we never felt like tourists. We just felt like we had stumbled into the coolest joint in town. Great people. Great vibe. Great music. Great memories. And thankfully, something I actually wanted to eat and drink! If you're in Ketchikan, get yourself to Red Dog Saloon. Your cruise ship can survive without you for a couple of hours. So just try not to be a jerk wherever you go. It was CROWDED. but we got a table upstairs. The service is efficient. NOT really big enough to share. Came with chips, so for us it kind of felt like a desperation meal. I didn't expect fine dining, by any means, but sometimes the food trucks have the BEST food going. I guess I should have read the reviews first because it seems like burgers are the way to go. All in all, it was tasty, but not overly so. If I find myself there again next season, I'm definitely going to try the burger.

Is this an indication of faster service? Or is it because the food is worse? We ended up picking a pork skewer to compare. Pork Skewer ($8) - The first piece I ate seemed to be superior to the Carillo's version - still with the sticky sweet savory sauce, but a fattier and juicier piece of meat in the center. Subsequent pieces destroyed my initial impression. This business seems to be using very low quality cuts of meat, filled with fat and gristle, making the meat very difficult to chew and eat. In addition, some pieces of the meat taste old, as if they are close to rotting, kind of a nasty flavor that made me not want to finish the skewer. I guess the only real advantage as that the skewers they serve are larger than that of Carillo's? (2/5) Well, I certainly learned why the blue tent had a longer line... Maybe the chicken skewers and other food served at Bernadette's are better? I'm not sure, but I certainly won't be revisiting.

The lumpia and turon were also quite good with a crispy outer shell and plentiful filling. Service was friendly and it took a few minutes for the lumpia and sisig to be ready for us and the turon was premade so we only needed to grab one from the stack on the cart. Since Bernadette's is a food cart, you could say the ambiance is the surrounding port area which is a scenic place to sit off to the side and eat your tasty meal.

It was succulent and delicious and if you are like us where you just want to try it, 1 pound for 2 people is just fine given the price ($99 a pound(!), which is cheaper than the more touristy places). We topped it off with a side of the delicious fries (Beer Cheese Hop Salt Fries) and a few pints, it made for quite the perfect afternoon in Juneau. So if you are looking to get in your King Crab fix and not break the bank, while also finding a place a bit more relaxed, highly recommend the Alaskan Brewing Public House.

But $38 for two pieces of fish and some fries is ridiculously stupid. That is just price gouging for the cruise crowd. Really disappointed we paid that. Service was moderate at best. Nobody was rude. Nobody was all that on it either. And watch out for the birds. They have pigeons walking around on the wood floor inside the building. One was pecking crumbs right by the glass where the kegs are.
