The guys had some local brew. The women had glass of wine and a mixed drink. Everyone seemed to enjoy the beverages. Waitstaff was prompt and social. She convinced me to get the Walleye. I was NOT disappointed. Nice portion size. The ladies had variations of the flatbread pizza. Waitress was flexible in substituting out ingredients. Husband and I popped in for a spur of the moment date night on a Thursday. We were happily surprised! The staff was attentive and really friendly and fun to chat with. The vibe was relaxed and chill. Clientele is an older crowd which we absolutely loved. Drinks were fantastic... great small beer selection and wonderful craft drinks. I had a limoncello martini and their house margarita... both hand crafted and very good. I'm a bit picky with my drinks and they passed with flying colors! Strong and tasty! The charcuterie board (a bit pricey) was totally worth it. The owner (we think) explained all of the elements including where each individual cheese/meat was sourced from AND included his recommendations for combos. We really enjoyed it... then again... we're big meat and cheese people. But can you really go wrong with a solid charcuterie board?! This was quality. For dinner, we split the chicken fried chicken which was HIGHLY recommended to us by the couple we were sitting next to at the bar. They travel from Algonquin to come here... that's how cool this place is. Anywhoodle, the chicken... I kinda feel the outer crust was a *bit* overdone, but the chicken was cooked perfect and the gravy and mashed potatoes were perfect so I'm willing to overlook the "blackened" crust. Ordered the $35 charcuterie board and had very little meat and cheese. Either put it on a smaller board or add something to it. Very poor presentation. Waited over 1 hour for our food, which was blah. Manager blamed a short staffed kitchen for the wait. It was a Saturday, but over an hour is ridiculous. There were a lot of people drinking so maybe they didn't care about the wait or the taste of the food. Fresh walleye was served with plain white rice. Tasted like cat food. Zin GastroPub has a great deal of potential. We decided to try them for dinner on the weekend. We sat in the dining room (vs the bar). The tables are spaced out nicely and we loved the more vintage feel. The blackboard on the wall had the specials. Service and feeling welcome is 5 stars. They are a fantastic team that made us feel like regulars even though this was our first time visiting them. One of the things that stand out are their cocktails. They search for wines, beers and liquors that are unique and that others won't have. And they succeed. I had some bourbon and wine I had never heard of and they were fantastic. For appetizers we had their Italian Empanadas. We really liked the sauce and the empanadas themselves were good. They didn't seem homemade. But still very good. For dinner we tried 2 of their specials, the Pork Chop with Parmesan Mashed Potato's and the Red Snapper Vera Cruz. We also had one of their burgers. The burger was fantastic. I'd definitely have that next time I visit. They cook it perfect temperature and it is delicious. Unfortunately, the two specials weren't done as well. The pork chop was a bit dry, but ok. My wife finished it, but thought it was just ok. I had the Red Snapper. The Vera Cruz sauce is spicy (they warned me). I love spicy and it was delicious. The Snapper was not very good. I couldn't cut half of it with the knife. It almost seemed like it wasn't a filet cut, or wasn't Snapper. The portion I could eat was actually pretty good. The waiter and owner (Ken) want to make sure everyone has a 5+ star time and although there was a little miss on our dinner, we will be back. Great potential, great time. We love this place...We felt like an "insider" from our very first visit! It helps the owner is there and very hands on, with good explanations, and sharing stories of his trips abroad, and why he chooses certain things for the menu. Nice wine selection, good menu. I have yet to be disappointed with any of my choices. My dining guests are international 'food snobs'; one travels 2-3 times a month for concerts and food, the other used to design restaurants in downtown Chicago and was born in Paris ( and the pickiest eater I know). There's these two server/bartender dingaling chicks who are addicted to playing slots and act like obnoxious morons. Food, service and ambiance are all excellent in this wonderful little GastroPub. They just seem to get it right...Every.Single.Time. I absolutely love that their beer and wine selections don't come from ho-hum producers that you can get anywhere. I love the farm to table nature of their delicious menu. I especially love the Zin salad with added seared tuna. And finally, the owner, the chef, the bartenders are fun and fabulous. My wife and I happened to be in Lake Zurich and seeing that this restaurant had 4 stars on yelp and participated in rapid rewards dining, we decided to check this place out. When we got in, it took a few minutes for us to get seated since it was fairly packed for a Tuesday evening. However, the owner (forgot his name ‍) sincerely apologized to us for the wait and told us he would seat us soon. After we got seated, Cari, our waitress, came over and sincerely apologized again. This kind gesture by both of them completely made our day! The food was good too! The lobster Mac n cheese and bison burger was on point! They have a decent selection of beers and wine too! I went to Zin Gasrto Pub based on other reviews on here. I like that the restaurant offers locally grown farm to table food. The salad with goat cheese, various nuts and raisins in a maple vinaigrette was amazing and enough to share with another person. The boneless ribeye special had a charcoal grilled taste and very good. However the ambiance did not fit the pricing of the food and cocktails ($14 for an average glass of Pinot Nior was a bit steep and a small pour). The ambiance needs to be redone (I realize they just opened up a music room with plastered cover albums on a section of a wall was not a good touch). The staff was very nice too. While I plan to go back I may try a burger instead as that seemed to be the food of choice there along with that awesome salad. Beelows further down is an overall better choice with similar pricing however. read more

We were three school friends and it was my first time at Zin Gastropub. The food was wonderful. One of the girls and I had the Walleye and it was a generous portion and cooked to perfection. The other girl had the French Onion Soup and a Salad, she was happy with it. The service was perfect, from the owner to the waitress either could not do enough for us and checked on us periodically without being all over us. They were both fun to talk with. We've really wanted to like this place. We've gone several (5-6) times over the past few years to support them. They had to get better with time, right? Last night I ordered the special of the day, shrimp and asparagus over penne. No asparagus anywhere to be seen. In the SPECIAL! The penne was almost crunchy, way underdone. They took it back to put asparagus on it. New meal about ten minutes later-- with penne done just right, a few super skinny asparagus, and THREE shrimp on the plate instead of the eight that were originally on it! That's it. we are done. Came with a group of friends for dinner on an early Saturday evening. There were things I loved and things I didn't love about our dining experience. Love that the food is locally sourced. We enjoyed the zin burger, it was a mighty one with a big onion ring in there and bacon. Truffles fries are a must! The lamb meatballs were also good, loved the dressing that came with the salad. The maple chicken bacon mac and cheese was abundant but had some very liquidy cheese that pooled at the bottom of the plate, didn't affect the taste. Had bits of fried chicken patty and bacon bits in it, but other than that it didn't look too different from the normal mac. Wished we could have taken it home to enjoy the rest but the waitress mixed up our leftovers with another person's in our party. No big deal but I wouldn't have been pleased if it were a stranger's leftovers. I could see how it could happen because there were 3 mac and cheese plates that needed to go boxes, but I think simply labeling it after they packed it would have prevented the mix up. She did try and double check after bringing it out but still gave us the wrong one. Luckily none of us had allergies but could be a risk for someone who got the wrong leftovers back. Service was friendly and waitress was attentive to our drink needs, but it took a good 40-45 minutes before we got our entrees. We saw other families who arrived after us get their food and nearly finishing it before we got our food. When it got busy, we needed to flag our waitress down for the check but we never felt rushed or pressured to leave after our meal, which was great. We had a good time at Zin, except for the few minor things (labeling leftovers, timely service) that could be improved. read more

Even outside of health concerns it's just way too packed in and noisy. People from the bar were hovering around us. Servers and customers bumping into our table repeatedly. Just awful spacing. Ordered drinks and appetizers. They were fine but the server never came back for the rest of our order. We waited; tables near us also waited a long time and had multiple problems. My wine glass was empty, my husband's soda was empty for 20 minutes. No attention at all. We finally flagged down the server and asked to close out our tab and left without dinner. First time here and went for a romantic New Years Eve Dinner. Very impressive wine list, creative cocktails and extensive beer selection. Started off with the bacon wrapped dates, my boyfriend had the seared tuna. I had the lovely goat cheese and beet salad, he had the French onion soup (which was too amazing to even let me have spoonful- darn it!) For entrees I had the turf, while he had the surf and turf, both cooked to perfection didn't even need a knife to cut the steak....the potatoes served with this dish...OMG I wanted to marry them!! Then desert...they have a brand new pastry chef I was told by Sunny the owner, and her flourless chocolate cake and Carmel gelato was insanely delicious!! The couple next to me had the cheese cake...it was huge!!! Then there is the staff! Very fun and knowledgeable. Both the owners Robert and Sunny told us they like any new restaurant has gone through growing pains with staff that they have a great people now who are like family. What a great new addition to the area. I love everything about this place. Friendly, welcoming staff and atmosphere, great from-scratch locally sourced menu items and diverse selection of interesting wines. We had small plates . . . the lamb meatballs (perfect), empanadas (excellent), elote corn (yummy) and poutine ('nuff said). Blueberry cobbler ("cobbler-y").
