I ordered the original gyro and was expecting a real authentic Greek sandwich. Not so much. The gyro was pork and not the traditional lamb and pork. Not only is the food amazing, but they are so great at keeping the long line moving during lunchtime! Excellent lunch spot in Downtown. I am a huge fan of they gyros... I thought they were the best thing they offered in there until they came up with the rice bowl... basically like a gyro deconstructed... You'll get basically the same ingredients but instead of bread you'll get rice. Overall, an excellent and filling lunch. It's so great to have a place w/ Greek food. I don't like when people call Spanikopita spinach pie. I mean seriously, call it what it is, not that difficult. Either way it's pretty damn tasty so you should definitely get it. I would also recommend the lentil soup that they have as it's pretty delicious. These prices are decent which isn't always the case when you get something downtown. I have never gotten anything besides those two things because if you like what you like, then why change it up? They are pretty adept at getting people through the line quickly so you can order, pay & get your food in no time. Although I would recommend avoiding the crazy lunch hour line by going a bit later & then things are a bit less hectic. They don't have much space there but they somehow manage to make do. This is my special treat for Friday lunch when I've been an especially good girl all week. I have to limit my Zo consumption in all its juicy, greasy, succulent porky glory because I could eat this shit everyday. I don't know what they do to that pita, but it is magical. Get the pork and get it with hot sauce. Then go find a secluded area, cover your entire body with napkins and eat your sandwich alone to save yourself the embarassment of dripping pork juices and tzaziki sauce everywhere and loving every minute of it. Many people don't know this, but the strips of processed meat that are commonly sold as "gyros" around the US come from a single wholesale distributor called Kronos Food, that has been skewing American perception of gyros since the 1970's. If your local sandwich joint, often even Greek owned, offers gyro wraps - they all get the meat strips in bulk from Kronos because it's most cost effective. Despite knowing better, they don't make their own gyros. If these pre-packaged meat strips were served as "gyros" in a Greek restaurant anywhere in Europe, they would be out of business within a month. Just ask any Greek if you don't believe me. Long story short, what Zo's serves is the closest to authentic gyros I have seen in the US. This is what it's supposed to look and taste like. Enough said. read more

What a great find! We were walking around Boston and saw there was a line around the corner for this place. We didn't think much of it - but when we walked back by it about 2 hours later we decided to try it out. Hands down the best gyro i've ever had. Oh Zo, how I love you, let me count the ways. It's a bit difficult for me to openly write about Zo, words can't express the amount of love and passion I have for a few of the things they serve. Most importantly, Zo makes the perfect "Original" gyro, something I was craving in Boston and systematically seeking out from one greek place to the next until I found it at my beloved Zo. What makes the perfect Gyro at Zo? 1) a soft, buttery bread base 2) shaved meat from the rotisserie that has those spiced crispy cooked tips but moist soft center. 3) farm fresh vegetable toppings (tomato, onions, cilantro) 4) an incredibly refreshing cucumber tzatziki sauce 5) served fast, served hot freshly shaved shaved off of the rotisserie in front of you. Clean. Seems simple right? Well, it's not. I've experienced too many sad gyros before I got to this wrap of wonderment. A buddy of mine and I go here at least once a week (we walk form the financial district) and every time we end up talking about the gyro between each bite. We look like a couple of crack addicts returning to our addiction after being away from it for a full 6 days. As good as the Gyro is, I must admit to getting it only 60% of the time. Here's the dirty little secret why: 1) Spinach pie (spanakopita) 2) Stuffed grape leaves (Dolmathakia) 3) Baklava Spinach Pie Their Spinach pies are the best I have ever tasted. An incredible crispy, flakey exterior with that great combination of feta, lemon and spinach interior mixed to the perfect ratio. I'm not a huge fan of cooked spinach, but these spinach pies are good enough to compete with the mighty gyro gods. Do yourself a favor, try one. Just one. Stuffed Grape Leaves If I get what I have convinced myself is the lighter meal of the spinach pie, I usually pick up the stuffed grape leaves. Again, these are refreshing and the best stuffed leaves I've found in Boston so far. Baklava Their price to size ratio of Baklava is the best I've found also. The only downside is that sometimes they don't use enough honey. I've only experienced that a couple of times, but still, they are incredible. The only downside of Zo? You'll never be able to eat a gyro anywhere else. read more

This place has the best gyros! I get the original (you can even get it as a salad and it is just as good). Their tzatziki is spot on and their gyro is always filled to the brim with meat. My only gripe is when I got the salad I asked for tzatziki and they charged me extra for "extra dressing" even though I didn't need/want the balsamic the salad came with. I wish they would've just given me the option to only get the tzatziki. Also- the guy asked if I wanted 1 pita or 2 so I said ok I'll take 2? And that was also extra $$.. Let me start by saying this place is fast food. The restaurant itself is very clean, the staff very polite but the food is not real Greek food. The gyro was bland, and the meat dry. The other thing that stood out to me is the original that everyone raves about is pork, where's the lamb gyro meat? The baklava tasted pretty good but the whole thing feel apart and the addition of cinnamon was not bad, but definitely a little strange. The funny thing about this was my uber driver who picked me up happened to be Greek. He advised me if you want real Greek food in Boston get out of downtown. I love a good gyro. I just love it, I do. I like it a lot! I. Like. Gyro! So when Zo opened a new branch on State Street, a block away from my office, I couldn't help but think how nice it would be to dash over for a gyro OOH I LOVE DE GYRO! and be back at my desk eating it in five minutes flat. Zo does two varieties of gyro GIMME DE GYRO!!: pork and chicken. Just get the pork, it's the other white meat after all. If you like tzatziki you'll be in heaven cos they are liberal with it on their gyro I FANCY GYRO! It's hard to step into Zo and *not* get a gyro I FAT COS I LOVE DE GYRO!!!, but the soups are pretty damned awesome too, my favorites being the Hungarian mushroom and their take on the classic avgolemono. I splurged on a spanakopita yesterday to go with my soup, and it was a greasy, flaky, delicious mess to eat. Portions are just right, and the prices, for State Street, are competitive. The gyro can be a bit messy when you eat it thought, so I end up scarfing the thing down in about 2 minutes so it has less chance of making a mess. I've heard nothing but amazing things about Zo (not only from the Yelp community but from friends who have tried it personally), so you can imagine my disappointment when I walked in to the new State St location (thankfully before the lunch rush) only to receive one of the driest, blandest gyros I've ever had in my life. The tzatziki was utterly flavorless and did little to elevate the meat, which was shaved into tiny pieces that were so tough and burnt they may as well have been beef jerky. The pita, which was soft and supple and surprisingly strong enough to hold everything together, was probably this gyro's only redeeming feature. Surely this must have been a fluke? Zo was a little confusing to find. Their address(here on yelp) even says the entrance is off of merchants row, so I guess in just an idiot because I almost left thinking they are closed. It didn't help that a portion of their restaurant (are they renovating?) had paper in the windows. Note to staff: put a note up for the non locals so they know what's up, because it seriously looks as if you are closed, either for reno, or permanently. As far as the food, I had the Greek salad with chicken and the wife had the chicken gyro. One thing we both noticed after a couple of bites is just how salty the chicken was. Flavors were great, but could use less salt for sure. The gyro was packed to the gills and the tsatsiki was delicious. No other complaints. As for the salad I would have liked to see more olives (I got two) and an option for tsatsiki sauce rather than dressing (it was definitely yogurt based but with more vinegar). Maybe I can just ask for that next time. Plenty of feta to go around, so overall there was a nice balance of greens, protein, and fats. Loved it. Portions, as mentioned were great, and this spot is definitely a local favorite; plenty of suites ordering carry out while we dined in. We will be back. This used to be my go-to lunch spot when I worked down the block from them on state st. Consistently juicy and well marinated meat. I always opted for their spicy combo gyro. Half chicken and half lamb. Such fresh ingredients. Line moves fast. Staff is efficient. Their lemon chicken soup is just rich enough with lemon seasoning. Consistency is perfect. My first time at Zo was visiting the State street location. I picked up a grilled chicken salad, my friend got a chicken gyro and corn chowder. My salad was fresh, crisp and the white zinfindale dressing was delicious. I had a piece of my friends Gyro and I was delighted that every aspect that makes a Gyro a Gyro was full of authentic flavor. Corn chowder not thick like the chowders I'm used to being a New England native, but it was a nice attempt and I would buy it again. Being disappointed that I didn't get a Gyro myself, I went back the next day, but this time I went to the Center Plaza location. Picked up a chicken gyro and a carribean fish stew. Stew was extremely disappointing. It was the same as the corn chowder without corn, few pieces of fish, some yuca, peppers and no seasoning. I had to bring it home and jazz it up. While delicious these gyros are bound to put you into an intense, yet oddly enjoyable, food coma. I also highly recommend the Mediterranean salad with chicken. It's a little pricey but because they don't skimp on the chicken here so you'll be full and satisfied even though it's just a salad (it's on the salty side so if you can't stand that stick to the gyros). If you skipped breakfast (shame on you) and are due for a nice hearty lunch, go to Zo's! Actually go anyway. read more

I don't want to spoil the party. Really. Based on the other yelp reviews, perhaps my expectations were too high. That said ... Zo loses 1 star out of the gate for not offering lamb or beef/lamb. I know the other reviews mention lamb, but I saw none on the menu. The options were pork or chicken souvlaki; I opted for the chicken. The good: the pita was extraordinary -- fresh, a hint of spice, and light. And the tzatziki was delicious. And the overall taste of my souvlaki was very good. Unfortunately, the chicken was more shredded than sliced. That texture was overpowered by the tzatziki, making the chicken souvlaki more like a chicken salad sandwich -- something I detest. I had to finish the sandwich with a spoon. So that's where the 2nd star went. I also had the lentil soup, which was good -- but I've had better. (e.g. - at Al Wadi on VFW Pkwy). Bottom line -- good, but not great, and a limited selection. When I next I want to get my Greek on in the financial district, I'll likely hit Café Dino or Archie's Place. read more

What came to mind when I tried out "Zo" the other day was not just the fantastic, tasty gyros in an authentic pita, or the freshly made Greek food, but a quote from the old TV show "M*A*S*H." It was by the character Charles Emerson Winchester; he was the snooty Bostonian guy who replaced the weaselly Frank Burns when the show had gone completely downhill in its later seasons... But I digress. Charles once said: "I do one thing, I do it very well." That in a nutshell is Zo. Their gyros are great. Giant spits of roasting meat are carved to order. The tzatziki sauce, that delicious combination of creamy and tart yogurt with crisp light cucumbers, is spot on. Combine these with a true pita, not a pocket or Syrian bread, but a thick chalupaesque circle of bread, and fresh garnishes of tomatoes and mint, enough said. Well, except that the spanakopita is awesome. Crispy phyllo dough crust wrapped around savory spinach and feta cheese. Oh, and they have chicken gyros which I would almost guarantee are as good as the pork one I had. One thing and FYI: it's pronounced 'YEAR- RO" not "JIGH-RO." If you say "jigh-ro," just get back in your 1995 Camer-Oh!, polish your gold chains, and drive. Okay? Anyway, go to Zo. I frequently visit Zo for lunch and I've never been disappointed. If you get there around 12:30, the line often stretches out the door, however, the line does move quickly. I've had both the pork and chicken gyros and the garden salad. The ingredients are of high quality and the food always tastes fresh. I had been wanting to try Zo for a while, but was intimidated by the long line at the Government Center location. So when I saw they were opening up on Merchant Row right behind work, I was stoked! Honestly the best gyro I have ever had. Seriously. The menu is simple and laid out in a way that is easy to read. The decor is streamlined and clean. The line moves fast, almost two fast ( I got tomatoes on mine when I asked for none), But no matter. It was still delicious! The pita bread is perfect with just the right amount of chewiness. The meat ( I got an original which is shaved pork) had the perfect amount of texture, Not too dry with the right amount of crispy end pieces mixed in. The pita is piled high with meat well worth the 8 dollars. The tzatziki sauce was not too heavy and tasted fresh and bright. It really was yummy combination! I will definitely be back! read more

The pita was soft and chewy, the chicken was shredded and spiced, the yogurt sauce was creamy and clean.. clean? Yea I think that's the word i'm looking for. I love Zo. I love it so much that the gentleman at the counter knows my order! I almost always get the Greek salad with chicken and it never disappoints. The salad itself is almost enough for 2 lunches: a generous portion of the kebab chicken, combined with tasty feta cheese and kalamatas. The pita that comes with the salad/soups is fantastic - they grill it up beforehand so it's toasty hot! I've also tried the spinach pie and a variety of their soups, all super yummy. Sometimes there is a line out the door during the lunch rush. However, they are very efficient and it moves quickly. Prices are average for the downtown area ($9 for salad + chicken).
