What a great spot. I wanted to try this place out with my boyfriend while we were visiting Napa. We walked in and it's beautiful inside. Very romantic, high ceilings with beautiful detailing, wood accents and Spanish tile flooring. We were told the wait would be 1.5 hours, so we waited at the bar. The bartender was very spacey and after he greeted us, we waited over 15 minutes, just to be served a beer and a glass of wine. That was pretty disappointing and we were concerned about dinner service, but it was well worth the wait. Our server was very attentive and we didn't have to wait long for any of our dishes or drinks. We ordered the cheese plate to start, flat iron steak, the brick pastry with crab, the rockfish and the queso frito. Everything was delicious, but the steak made us want to lick the plate afterward. The combination of food, service, and ambience made this an easy five star review. The two of us arrived around 6:30 and found the restaurant already full. We knew they didn't take reservations so we put our names in (on a Thursday at that time we were told to expect a 30 to 45 minute wait for a table) and went to the bar to grab a drink. Lucky for us, the bar is first come first serve and two seats came available right as we walked up. We actually prefer sitting at the bar because you usually get quicker service and better interaction with the server, and our experience at ZuZu was no exception. Joe, the bartender, was attentive, informative, and made some really great recommendations on wines based on the progression of dishes. The food. Ah the food. We had 1) a salad with peaches, cheese, arugula, and honey 2) squash blossoms stuffed with goat cheese over a peppery puree (the special that evening) 3) the gambas al ajillo 4) the lamb chops with barbeque glaze and mint, and 5) the flat iron steak with chimichurri. Everything was excellent and the plates came out at a perfect pace for us. The squash blossoms may have been the stand out favorite, so it's too bad that's not a regular menu item. I also really loved the lamb - I've never gotten how lamb and mint went together, since so often it's "mint jelly".. but the fresh mint here was a perfect way to lighten the otherwise rich lamb. We finished with the chocolate pot de creme and a glass of 100% Spanish garnacha, at Joe's recommendation. The pairing was perfection. I'm so glad we had room for dessert (and more wine!). Experienced HORRIBLE service from the moment we walked in. At least 4 servers passed us by and saw us waiting but not one of them acknowledged us or even said "someone will be right with you." Finally, I had to let someone know that we were waiting to be seated. After a short 10 minute wait, we were seated in the loft area upstairs which was pretty full that night. Our server (female) did not bother to offer us bread or water at any point in time. We had to ask for water and we asked for bread 4 times. Meanwhile, the 2 tables next to us got their bread replenished as the server came by with a whole basket of bread...?!?! The 2 stars are basically based on the food which we enjoyed. I've been coming here for many years and this is the first (and maybe the last time) we come here unless they start training their servers on being more courteous and attentive to customers. And also wanted to mention that the server didn't even bother to offer us dessert or coffee. WORSE. SERVICE. EVER. read more

I finally found a paella that causes no stomach aches! Ok, beyond that, ZuZu had won me over for its creativity with its dishes. I looked at their menu on their website and found an almost completely different list of menu items when I visited with 2 others at this restaurant. The ambiance is intimate and romantic. The restaurant is in downtown Napa and so parking can be challenging. There is a parking garage 1-2 blocks away. I was here just Saturday, the beginning of true Fall weather, with leaves just starting to turn red yellow orange; wonderful weather when kissed by sunshine. It does get chilly in the shades during the day. Arrived At 4:30, there were already people seated for dinner. It's cozy and seating is quite limited. Be sure to come early or be prepare to wait. Drinks: How can you not order sangria at a tapas bar?! Ok, the drink was flavorful, and its sweetness was just right. I tend to be the kind of customer that orders their milk tea with 1/4 sugar; and prefer whipped cream than icing on cake. Cold tapas: 1. Cauliflower salad with fennel, Mexican cucumbers, watermelon radish, and other ingredients I cannot recall. It is a light dish, thankfully this dish came first before the ceviche, otherwise I don't think I will be able to appreciate the flavors. It's the first time I had Mexican cucumbers. They had pickled it, and the texture is a thin crunchy outer layer and a soft center with little seeds. 2. Ceviche with rockfish that has coconut milk. Holy smokes, it was delicious! The coconut milk brought richness to the dish that balanced really well with the tart and vinegary flavors. Hot tapas: 1. Tortilla Espanola with scallions and aioli - your standard expectation of a Spanish tortilla. It was fluffy, however, I wished they added more potatoes. The best one that I had still came from a potluck where a Spanish friend of the host cooked the dish with the creamiest potatoes. 2. Lamb chops with Moroccan Barbeque Glaze/curry oil and mint. Granted, lamb is not my preferred meat because many restaurants often bring out this gamey taste in the dish that I really dislike, and mint is also one of my least favorite ingredient. I have to say, the sauce over the lamb really neutralized that gamey taste. The fragrant scent from the curry oil, and the tanginess from the barbeque sauce was a wonderful combination for this meat. I was able to enjoy a few bites from this dish despite the gamey taste. 3. Paella del dia - mussels, chorizo, meat of the day (lamb). The deal with ordering paella is that you can order as little and as many servings without needing to match the number of people. In some places, minimum order is 2 servings, well, you can order that even if you have 4 people. The rice is done and cooked thoroughly to the core. I've had paella dishes that came with slightly undercooked rice and consequently gave me stomach aches. ZuZu really had me in this dish - the tomato flavors is just thoroughly absorbed by the rice and I simply could not resist it. 4. Braised Pork Cheeks Served with a Black Radish Salad and Sherry Gastrique. Yikes! Be prepared for a palate filled with pork grease! They served 2 cuts that were super fatty and 1 rib, but, BUT! The radish salad just cuts right through this thick grease. I wish there was more of the salad to have a better balance. This would be a dish that pairs well with a super tannic wine. Dessert: we ordered a chocolate pot de creme - it was described as a chocolate custard. However, the texture is more like something between mousse and ganache. Very smooth, appropriately sweet, and just perfect to share with someone. Service: The waiter was courteous, and checked in with us once in a while. She was helpful and friendly. The final bill is proportional to my experience here, and well worth the investment. I would come back to this place again next time I'm in Napa. read more

Am amazing culinary experience in NorCal. It totally reminded me of New York standards- bold, exciting flavors without necessarily the 5-star pricetag. The tapas have a Spanish seafood spin, so we were stoked about the menu. 2 standouts for us were the ceviche and the salted cod. it's hard to find fresh ceviche that matches up what we had in Peru, but it was pretty good here. The cod had a surprisingly smooth texture and buttery flavor. Each plate came out one at a time, so it was really fun to try everything together. Fun, packed crowd on a Saturday night, but definitely a short wait that's worth the wait. We'll be back to downtown Napa! read more

We came here not ravenous, which I think was a good idea, as you don't want to wolf down these delectable little plates of appetizer type foods. We started off with the beet goat cheese salad and the avocado-cucumber gazpacho. Both were hits, though I suspect the beets were canned (roasted beets taste much better). Next was the tortilla espanola which was amazing! They cook them in individual cast iron pans, which keeps the tortilla superhot while you enjoy it. I wish all tapas places did that. The flat iron steak in chimchurri sauce was also good, though the serving could have been more for what we paid. Pro: sitting a the bar, the bartender waiting on us, was very attentive, and kept our bread basket and our waters full. Awesome service there. Now that I come to think about it, I don't know why I am giving it 4 stars and not 5.....It was overall just missing something. Maybe the prices turned me off a bit. The prices are actually pretty reasonable for such amazing food and might I suggest: Artichoke and Portobello Salad - what can I say, they made my taste buds dance Mussels - different recipe than what I'm used to, but so delish that I needed extra bread to sop up all the broth Butternut Squash Soup - creamy and yummy Brown Rice Cake - takes a few bite before you can really appreciate the complexity of the flavors, give them a try as they really showcase the talent I saw plenty of other intriguing dishes so I encourage you to check them out! Zuzu has an extensive wine list and Last, but not least, amazing service that you can count on to be inviting. I have been to ZuZu on several occasions and love the cozy and relaxed vibe. My friend and I ordered the following: Flat-Iron Steak from Niman Ranch with Roasted Jalapeño Chimichurri- This was cooked medium rare and was just divine! Colorado Lamb Chops with Moroccan Barbeque Glaze, Mint & Curry Oil- Tasty, a little on the fatty side, but that is how it is supposed to be. Roasted Beets with Frisee, Walnuts, Pt. Reyes Blue & Seville Orange Vinaigrette- Too many flavors going on my least favorite dish of the night. Duck confit salad- By far the best dish of the evening! My friend and I both agreed this was amazing! Queso Frito; Pan Fried Manchego Cheese with Roasted Poblano Chiles & Guajillo Sauce-Nice combination. For dessert we had the tres leches cake with bananas. Skip the dessert or at least this one. Overall our server was awesome, the food was tasty and I love sharing small plates which is what this place is all about. They have a fun wine list and I enjoyed my time here. Came here once 5 years ago, and it's as good this time around. We were a party of 3, got seats immediately at the bar but it's super popular, so expect a wait because they don't do reservations (they don't need to they're so beloved). We got 8 dishes (one being a 2-person paella) for 3 of us. All of it was really good. Grilled yellowtail was fresh, crisp, delicious. Grilled octopus was tasty and firm, with a nice spicy sauce. Pork cheek was delicious. Seafood black paella special - on the pricey side but it was great. The rice is black because of the squid ink, and there's lots of seafood on it (calamari/squid, fish, shrimp, oyster, mussel). Lamb chops -- normally it's 2 chops, but because we were 3, the bar guy made it 3 so we each got on. Love the customization. We ended with a cake that was a little underwhelming but not worthy of complaint. The sangria was tasty too. We loved it and if we're ever back in Napa, I'll definitely come back. read more

Excellent food and service! We went here for the paella, but everything from the beer & wine list to the tapas was outstanding. We started our meal with some sort of sauteed pepper that came from their co-op garden. They were served with roasted garlic and sea salt, and were delicious! We followed up with flounder ceviche, and I must say it was some of the best I've had. It had a delicious combination of flavors, was well balanced, and extremely refreshing. Finally, we shared the paella negra, which earns its name from the squid ink that gives it its color. At first, we thought the portion seemed small. However, it ended up being the perfect size for two of us. I will definitely be adding this to the Must Visit list for my future Napa trips! read more

I enjoyed this tapas bar. Great service, good atmosphere - ask to sit upstairs, if possible because it is a better setting than the downstairs. The tuna confit and flat iron steak were my personal favorites. If they have the sweet potatoes in season, you should definitely ask for those because they go really well with the steak. I don't even like potatoes and fully enjoyed them. You can probably skip the ribs because the sauce they used was not my favorite. Pretty reasonable portions for a tapas bar, so if you like a variety of dishes, this place is definitely worthwhile. read more

Boyfriend and I came here for a celebratory dinner the other night. I think we got there a bit early because there were still a lot of empty tables, and by the time we left every table was full. Our server was Ben, and he was really nice. We had a lot of questions about the wine, both being in the wine industry ourselves, and he was very helpful and knowledgeable about everything we asked. We ordered three different tapas. We started off with some grilled prawns with delicious sauce. It was absolutely delicious. We also had an octopus salad with grilled potatoes and sprouts. It was also delicious. Then our paella came. This was the absolutely best dish, by far. The paella had chorizo and clams, topped with sour cream and green onions. It was amazing, I probably could have eaten the whole thing by myself. The wines were pretty good and interesting as well. We started off with some champagne and Robert Sinskey Pinot Rose. Then we moved to a Spanish tempranillo/cab/malbec/merlot blend which was good, pretty rustic, and some white whine from Greece that I had never heard of before. Both were also really good, although I liked boyfriend's red blend a bit more than my white. Then... we were treated to a special delight. Ben was so kind as to treat us to a DELICOUS tres leches cake and two glasses of moscato for dessert (maybe an industry specialty? :)) It was really good. And I really appreciated the extra effort and friendliness. I hear things get really fun later at night, we will have to be going to try that out sometime. read more

The food is not bad, but the price is really not worth it. Averaging $9-$12 gets you a small plate of three pieces of meat. I would guess it comes down to $30-40/person for a good meal but not great. Had 3 tapas and 2 were good so that is a 66% making it a D. So not the best grade overall but the two items were pretty good. 1. COCONUT SQUID CEVICHE. A very interesting combination and screams Thai influence. But despite the restaurants mixup of the where tapas originate from it was a nice change of pace for ceviche. 2. BRAISED PORK CHEEKS fatty crispy and just delicious. Don't think about the calories, just enjoy the fatty meat melt in your mouth. Delicious sweet glaze too. The not so good was the FLAT IRON STEAK WITH chimichurri. It was cheap meat and didn't taste fresh when cooked medium rare. The best Spanish type tapas (aka real tapas) we've ever found outside a big city. Have been to Zuzu more than five times over the last several years and each time the menu has changed enough to make it interesting plus the have a very good wine selection by the glass and beer selection too (Pliny anyone?). Only downside is they are in the town of Napa which is a real town and not in the more wine and tourism only towns the rest of the way up the valley. That being said they are in the best part of town, their restaurant is very well decorated, and they are close to other shops and restaurants to stroll around to before or after. But the food is the main calling here and they do a great job. read more

As of this minute, the view across the street from Zuzu is painful. The Napa Flood project has eaten the park that was once there, and replaced it with a worksite. Don't let that stop you. Zuzu is my favorite place to eat in Napa. EVERYTHING on the menu is ridiculously good. I know that tapas seem to have faded from the it-list of cuisine, "small plates" are like the worldwide standard, but Zuzu just rocks. This summer, make sure you get the Pimiento peppers, they have become a staple for my whole family every summer, my sister/brother-in-law and parents grow them in large quantities and we roast em up at every get together. I arrived early after spending a spa day in Calistoga. *Table was easy to come by. *Server was friendly and polite. *Mediterranean olives were great, quinoa salad with smoked duck and butter lettuce was amazing, and the prawns in garlic were fair, but not great, and the salt cod dish with cream, butter, and potatoes is simply one of the best treats I'd had all day. *Big wine list, big menu, and reasonable prices make this a nice stop in Napa. read more

It looks like people either love or hate this place, so count us in the love category. Food was mostly outstanding, so I think it depends on what you order. This is what we had ranked from highest enjoyment to lowest (although there was really no bad dish, and I am very particular about my food tasting good): - boquerones - an extremely flavorful toast with egg and anchovies (I need to figure out how to make it, the combination of flavors is unbelievable) - cucumber and avocado gazpacho with jalapeno and rock shrimp - the best thing imaginable on a hot day, i could eat bowl fulls of it every day - albondigas - 3 pork meatballs in some tasty orange sauce - paella - we got the one with lamb, chorizo and clams - very good - Spanish ham - another toast w/ an olive and anchovy spread - this was good but not worth the $15 and the salty flavors competed with each other They make outstanding cappucinos, and the dessert empanada my husband ordered he enjoyed very much (I was too stuffed for dessert). They have a very extensive wine list and the one I got was pretty tasty. I am happy to note that when I made a mistake on my first try at ordering wine the waitress suggested another one that was on the cheaper side available and it was an excellent choice for me. I was impressed that she didn't try to make me get the most expensive choice. Overall the experience was excellent, service was excellent, and the bill was much lower than we expected for a celebration dinner in Napa. We will definitely come back next time we visit. WOW! I had dinner here over the weekend, and it was soooo good! Service was great too! Friendly, fast, and they knew the menu very well. The salads were sooo fresh and tasty. All the veggies tasted like they were picked that morning! The stuffed squash blossoms were AMAZING! I really liked the duck confit over faro which tasted like it had some goat cheese mixed in. The flat iron with chimichurri was cooked to perfection. Basically everything was cooked and prepared perfect. I will definitely be coming back again and again as you can get a great meal for a good price and with great service and a very nice wine/beer list as well. If you like tapas, you MUST go here! Zu Zu offered a relaxing Spanish Basque Tapas experience for those who enjoy bold flavours. Each dish was unique and allowed my tastebuds an exciting symphony to my palette. Jamon Iberico- let the saltiness of the meat combine with the flavorful acorn lardo and melt down your tounge for a swirl of goodness. Queso Frito- it's almost polenta like in texture but strong in cheesiness Chicken Croquettes- struggle to compete with the rest of the menu items.. I say "Pasadena" Sliced Beef- the vinegar and oil meld perfectly with the herby chimmichurri ... A rich mans Pickled Tounge Brussels Sprouts- just when I thought I had enough of every chefs take on these little ruffians... Came here for dinner for a short vacation in Napa. Wandered around downtown and I saw the restaurant front. I don't get to eat delicious Spanish tapas that much, so we went inside, sat down at the bar, had some glasses of wine, and a few dishes. It's a pretty nice restaurant with a rustic kind of interior and intimate atmosphere. The lighting was a little too dim for my preferences, but didn't bother me that much. We ordered ceviche de tombo, gambas al ajillo, and paella. I enjoyed the refreshing citrus marinade with the fresh tuna for the ceviche. Gambas al ajillo was amazing! I almost wanted to order a second serving and I could eat bread with the ajillo sauce forever. The paella was also really good, the rice was just at the right consistency. I think it might've been better without the sour cream because it was a little overpowering, but that's just me. Next time, I'll order without it. Service was sincere and kind. The bartender helped us with ordering wine and he was very friendly and nice guy. Answered all of the questions we had and joked a little with us when we were talking about European soccer. I love the food at Zuzu, I think it's fresh, interesting and flavorful. When seated upstairs, I feel that the ambiance is really great. Downstairs, I feel a little cramped. If you blink, you'll miss this place on the street, but it's really a wonderful place for an interesting, non-Napa-esque experience. I just came back from Zuzu's and this was my second time there. Both times I loved the atmosphere, which includes nice decor, good music and lots of patrons but at a tolerable noise level. It's a business casual dress kind of place. I also really enjoyed the food. The previous reviewer must not be aware of what "tapas" means, because yes, the portions are smaller than huge..that's the whole concept of small plates. I would hardly call a menu where 2.5 plates for $7-10 each is plenty for a full meal "teeny portions for muchos pesos" (and by the way, pesos are from mexico, tapas are a spanish cuisine and while Spain used to have "peseto" as a type of currency, they are now using Euros). Anyway, here is what the two of us had for dinner and it was plenty: - Ceviche - market price, fish changes daily (a little latin american addition) - Cuban mashed sweet potatoes - $7 (amazing! like normal mashed) - Gambas al ajillo $9 - Flat Iron Steak ($11) - New potatoes with mushrooms, fried in duck fat ($8) - Citrus pudding cake with raspberries ($6) They also have very good sounding salads and other great seafood items. The most expensive item is lamb at $14, but even that would be a normal sized portion at a fancy restaurant. We were full and happy. The bill (including a latte) came out to $60. But, be sure to get there before the wine crowd returns (6pm or so) because it gets packed. read more

This is one of my local faves! I would give it 4 1/2 stars but there is not an option for the 1/2 star. The atmosphere is fun, lively, and unpretentious. The food is very tasty and inventive. It's tapas style, so it's nice to try several dishes. I recently tried the octopus for the first time and became a huge fan. Delicious! It's different than any other restaurant in the Napa Valley as the menu is mostly Spanish/Portuguese/Argentina style with a twist of local fresh ingredients. The wine list has many good options from Spain, Argentina and Napa with several to choose from by the glass. It's a great local hang out. If you don't know anybody when you get there, if you sit at the bar, you will most likely know most everyone by the end of the evening. It's a friendly spot. read more

If you want to enjoy one of the best Tapas places in the country, mingle with the locals, and wine enthusiasts of Napa, this is the place to go. We waited a good two hours at the bar for a table, and decided to just stay and have our Tapas plates at the bar. We did not mind the long wait, since the venue was very exciting to be in. The bartender was very friendly and recommended a beautiful bottle of wine that was surprisingly not from Napa, but from Portugal. The venue was getting more crowded as it got later in the night, so we decided to finally order our Tapas. We had: Tortilla Espanola - traditional Spanish potato/sweet onion omelet. Queso Frito- pan fried Manchego cheese with pablano chiles. Ceviche del dia. Moroccan barbecue rack of lamb. Everything was to perfection. The view at the bar seats we were sitting at had an open view of the kitchen, and every tapas dish coming out of there looked AMAZING and smelled unbelievable. Like I said, as the night went on, the drinks were flowing and the tapas were still being served.
