We decided to give this a try since it was rated 24 by Zagat. The food did not disappoint and the ambiance was quaint and cozy. The tapas were tiny but delicious. Here's what I thought of our dishes: - Sauteed clams with white wine and garlic sauce - so yummy! It was infused with bits of celery and some type of rice pasta that gave it the extra texture to make it very interesting. - prawns in red sauce (ok, this is so not the name of the dish but you'll be able to match it with the menu) - only 3 prawns so we had to savor every bit of it. The red sauce that it came in serves well as dipping sauce for bread. - cerviche del dia - ours was served with yellowfin Tuna and it was good but not great. I've had much better. - paella - this was served with chorizo, sausage, mussels and a tab of mayoinnaise on top. This was absolutely the best dish but the mayo makes the taste quite heavy. They also have wine by the glass from various regions in Europe. I would have given this place a 5 except both of us had bad stomache aches later that night. I was expecting the usual tapas menu, but was pleasantly surprised by the variety of choices and how good everything was! Here are the highlights: Salt cod dish- if there were ten stars, I'd give it ten stars!! It's THAT good. Quinoa salad with duck and butter lettuce- Five stars Paella- Four stars.. good, but I thought a lot of other dishes overshadowed it. Steak- Five stars.. perfectly cooked at medium rare. Ceviche with mango salsa- Five stars. So good after a nice, afternoon of wine tasting in Napa. Light and fresh. This is a great place for dinner after a day in wine country. First time I tried this place was I believe 10 years ago when my uncle brought my family to eat here. The one dish that stood out at that time and has been in my mind was the shrimp (Gambas al Ajillo). So on my recent trip to Napa, which was a few days ago, I brought my boyfriend here for his birthday dinner. It was either Celadon or Zuzu and we decided to go here since their menu is more interesting. After all these years they didn't disappoint me in their food except for the only dish that I remembered being delicious: Gambas al Ajillo. Either my taste preference changed or their Gambas al Ajillo changed because it wasn't creamy like I remembered it. Five other dishes we ordered were delicious though, especially the boquerones. The ingredients in each dish complimented each other very well and had lots of flavor. As for service, it was great. Our waiter was nice enough to warn us that we ordered too much in the beginning. The place packed up pretty quickly so come early if you don't want to wait. We arrived there a little before 6pm on a Saturday and it was pretty empty but within the hour the place packed up on the first floor (not sure about the top floor though). My boyfriend and I came here because we love tapas and Zuzu is a great alternative to all the American cuisine restaurants in Napa. This place doesn't accept reservations but we got there around 9 and we got a table right away. This place had great decor and we overheard someone saying that the lamps were salvaged? Either way they look very unique and fitting! Service was good, not great. Are they trained to majorly up sell here? That's what our server was doing to us and the table next to us the whole night! But it's okay....on to the food! Ceviche - Yum! One of our favorites of the night! The fish was very light and fresh. The chips? Not too good...they should invest in better chips. Chopped salad - Kinda like a caesar salad with avocado. I liked it! Salt Cod - Alright. Not what I expected. I swear it looks like mashed potatoes! One of the more filling plates of the night. Gulf shrimp - The sauce that it came with is delicious! Use some of the bread to dip! The pepper one the shrimp was a little overwhelming, couldn't really enjoy it. Paella - Ohh, I found this one a disappointment! I was really bummed because we were excited for this one. The rice was dry and there was barely any seafood or sausage in it. Blehhh...too bad. Flat iron steak - Very good! The steak was cooked perfectly and it was just the right amount of meat for us to share. Seriously melted in your mouth! The sauce that came with it was to much though! They really need to lay off the sauces here and let the food shine! Sangria - Average. Great wine list though, wish we had gone for a glass instead but the weather was was hot so we were feeling something light and refreshing. 4 glasses of sangria (should have just got a pitcher!!), 6 plates, and dessert...$95! I really like this place. They serve food the way I love to eat, small portions with lots of flavor so you can try a lot of different tastes and not get bored. The ceviche is delicious. They have a really good selection of interesting wines by the glass. The sangria is perfect on a hot summer day. When my wife and I come here we always sit at the bar, very friendly atmosphere. They won me over on my first trip in they offered Goat Cheese filled deep fried squash blossoms and house made sangria... two of my very favorite things ever! Mom and I orderd 2 plates at a time to split. Ended up on round 3 (6plates) before we were done. Really good stuff. I heartily recommend the squash blossoms, the flat iron steak, and the ceviche, but had no complaints about the rest. Super fun food tasting mission! read more

My friend and I went to Napa last week for a long weekend. We decided to try this place for dinner for our first evening in Napa. We were not disappointed! The tapas were delicious, warm, fresh and filling. We ate the Queso Frito, Tunisian Brik Pastry, and the octopus. Every plate was a burst full of flavor. I quite enjoyed the different flavors in each of the tapas. The service was spectacular and the atmosphere was upbeat. The place is quaint and cozy. I always go into these Tapas bars expecting something amazing, and more often than not I'm disappointed. The idea of lots of high quality dishes to sample and try sounds really appealing, and I know of a few great authentic ones (especially in Southern California), but this place isn't one of them. Going in for lunch and the place being nearly empty should have been a warning sign. The food ranged from either bland and watery (the quesadilla) to WAAY too much garlic (The steak and shrimp dishes). Trust me I love garlic as much as an italian, but the flavor was so overpowering you couldn't pick up on any of the other flavors of the ingredients they used. $50 after tax and tip and I'm left hungry and wanting to eat someplace else after. PS: The bathroom is really dark and dingey - they need to look into adding a bit more light in there because I could hardly see myself in the mirror! read more

3 stars is the average considering all the dishes we ordered...... The quail and anchovies were absolutely amazing. I would go back just to have those again..Ceviche was also quite good. However, the braised vegetables were bland....vegetables don't have to be bland! Just add some salt and some spices or something! The paella was easily the worse I've ever had. No one in my group wanted seconds and I couldn't even force the rest of it down. Some of the rice was hard and the tomatoes sauce served on top of it was really strange... All in all, check the place out. It's a nice space and they do have some good tapas. Just don't order the paella...or the apple empanada, nothing special. read more

This place is really good - well worth the trip and in the heart of Downtown Napa. This place fills up quickly so it's best to make a reservation or just go for early dining. There's not much very much space to wait by the bar so when we were there I noticed some irate patrons as we lingered at our table and oh so good dishes filled with yummy sauces that required several rounds of bread to properly do justice to the juices. There are so many reviews here that I'm not sure if it's been mentioned that one of the waitresses looks like Eva Longoria. Despite that striking resemblance it did seem that she was overwhelmed in being able to pay the right amount of attention for us - the walkway between the kitchen and our table went right through the crowded bar/waiting area. read more

While there were only a few vegetarian options, they were all delicious and filling. I ate here 2/16/2010 and it was very good. Their version of a greek salad has nice twist on it--we ordered two. The two other dishes we had were based on squash and potatoes and they both had layers of flavors and were rich but not greasy or heavy. We were the only people in the restaurant so the service was perfect. If you are visiting the area, don't miss it. read more

So I'm a fan of tapas, which usually gives any tapas place a leg up in the rankings. This place, however, wasn't satisfying, and not just in the I ate until I was stuffed manner. Was there on a Saturday night, and there wasn't much of a wait. The bar area seems like it would be a fun place to have tapas and learn a little about drinks (don't expect a wine sommelier since I repeatedly heard the bartender admit that he didn't know much about wines). Wine selection was a tad limited though if you're looking for choices. Overall the food was ok but not great. I'm used to the dishes coming out several at a time. In this case, it was like they were walking us through the meal since they only served one dish at a time. I've always preferred being able to much on several items at a time. Service was adequate but not great. Seemed a little curt and our server seemed semi frazzled that we wanted to keep a menu just in case we wanted to order more food. After trying the food, we didn't really want to get more. A few of the dishes were too heavily citrused so that you couldn't really enjoy the food. They were also out of the sweet potato dish, odd for a Saturday night. They did have a rather well put together place decor wise, which is why they're not two stars. Overall, I probably wouldn't go there again unless I was really craving tapas in Napa. To be honest, we ended up going to In-n-Out afterwards and that was much more satisfying. read more

Great little place in the heart of downtown Napa for Spanish tapas. I hear their Spanish wine is also excellent, but didn't get a chance to try any. The place was recommended to us by 4 or 5 different locals. I'm glad we stopped by! We ordered the chopped salad, gambas del ajillo, paella del dia, and flat iron steak. Everything was delicious! Oh Zuzu, we need to talk. I loves me some tapas. Sharing is caring as Big Bird says. I like tapas style dining quite a bit. I've even been brave enough to go out for tapas in Redding. I mean, how bad could that be right? What is more awkward than tapas in Redding to me is this review sounds like a poorly timed and even more poorly thought out break up. "It's not you, it's me." I swear. I have to apologize because Napa has earned my respect as a place for both great food and good times. So this review maybe a little unfair to Zuzu. Frankly it's Napa's fault for raising my expectations and maybe we need to start seeing other cities in wine country. The food at Zuzu was good! I have no complaints about the whole meal flavor and taste wise. The thing with tapas is that you get to try a lot of the menu and only one dish stood out to me, the braised pork shoulder. That is not good if out of 5 to 7 dishes only one makes you say. "wow!" If this tapas restaurant was a MLB hitter it would be par but its a tapas restaurant...in Napa. Heck even if just one more dish had knocked a 2 out double in to the outfielfd wall with men on I probably would have given them four stars. Again, Zuzu, I'm so sorry, it's not you, it's me. This whole, Napa thing really gets me, especially when the Bounty Hunter across the street is so good! The service was again good, our server was attentive for the most part but again nothing that wowed. I guess I have set the bar too high and I should probably take some time to be alone and do some self discovery. Take my review with a grain of salt because I feel that most people will really enjoy the food here. I just think maybe we need to spend some time apart, Napa and I, so I can come back down to the real world where food tastes good and doesn't have to be mind blowing. Feeling tapas after a day of wine tasting? Then this is a good place to stop by. Located at where you would called the downtown of NAPA, parking was easy enough to find. The restaurant has relatively small store front and looks nothing spectacular. Inside was just a bit cramp and had 2 levels. Our waiter was extremely friendly and was very prompt with the service. The food here was pretty good and the price was fairly resonable. Don't come here for large portions because it is tapas. Come here for the spanish taste they offer. We had a multitude of courses and I think my favorite was the monk fish seafood stew. The paella was not bad either. Overall a very nice experience to top off the day. read more

I had the pleasure of dining at Zuzu last weekend. I love sharing small plates with friends. Zuzu is the perfect place for this. So much variety on the menu. There were 4 of us and we ordered several items. I had my friends do the ordering so we did end up with items I would not have chosen. I'm glad it worked out this way. I ate and loved dishes that I would have missed if the menu had been solely left in my hands. I recommend being open to new things and trying as much as possible. My favorites were the squash blossoms and the lamb chops. The service was wonderful and friendly. The food was a delight. Can't wait to go back! read more

Ended up going here because Bounty Hunter down the street was completely packed. So glad we made the switch over here...the portions are a little on the smaller side though. The service was nice, nothing special. The flat iron steak. WOW. just WOW. The flavor of that chimichurri sauce...I am still thinking about it a week later. This was one of those tapas dishes that you wished you ordered just for yourself and begrudgingly shared. So tasty! The lamb chops were excellent and the other dishes were OK, I don't really remember what they were - vegetables of some sort. The paella was also delicious - totally worth the wait! Make sure that if you want the paella to order it the minute you walk in...it takes about 30 minutes to make and trust me you will not want to wait when you see everyone else eating it. Definitely a great place to end a day in Napa with! Without a doubt in my mind, the ambiance and impressive list of wines and delicious tapas makes this a five star restaurant in my book. Despite an hour wait for our party of nine, once seated, our friendly waiter was quick to introduce us to the variety of tapas that Zuzu has to offer. The food was fresh and we honestly didn't have to wait that long for each of our dishes to arrive. The great thing about this tapas-style restaurant is that our group was able to try a variety of dishes, each of which was presented well and also came in reasonably sized portions to be shared for two to three people. The House Sangria was also fantastic. While I wish I had the chance to try more of their dishes, the paella al dia and the flat iron steak were by far my favorites. The slices of steak were prepared perfectly and the garlicky flavors of each piece made this dish particularly mouth-watering. Assuming that each day has a different type of paella, it's a definite must-try that comes with each of its own unique flavors and ingredients! My friends also couldn't stop raving about the lamb chops so I'm going to assume they were made to perfection. Next time... Went here on a Monday night. It was busy, but we were able to get seated quickly. We ordered the ceviche of the day (flounder), bacalao (salted cod prepared like mashed potatoes), pork shoulder (forget the Spanish name, it's not on the online menu), and gambas al ajillo. The best was the bacalao. the most disappointing was the pork shoulder because it was constructed in the form of nachos that you can get a sports bar but scaled down to 1/10th the size. it just seemed kinda tacky for such an upscale restaurant. They made it fancy by adding a poached egg on top, which didn't do much to make them better. The pork itself wasn't very exciting. It's best if they took this off the menu or recreated in in a different form. The ceviche was cool, but the portion was too small. The gambas was just OK, bordering disappointing. We weren't expecting it to be sitting in a pool of sauce. We were expecting it to by typically served on an iron skillet while still sizzling with garlic. You can find better gambas al ajillo elsewhere. We ended our dinner with the tres leches with caramelized banana. It was disappointing because the whipped creme on top consisted of half of the entire cake. in other word, way too much creme. the tres leches cake itself was good though. All in all, we had just an OK experience. We lost the attention of our waiter towards the 2nd half of our dinner. fortunately there were other servers providing us with bread and water refills. read more

A much-needed flavor and ambiance zap after all that buttery French food and locally-grown wholesome décor up in Yountville. We showed up late - just a few minutes before closing - and were seated right away with assurances that we weren't ruining anyone's night. The dim lighting, cool music, and unsurprisingly enormous wine selection were worth the drive. I loves me a tiny carafe of wine. Forget the glasses and bottles, I demand tiny carafes. The menu choices were really different from our regular tapas greatest hits back East - loved the duck quinoa salad, queso frito, and flat-iron steak. The waiter asked if we would trust him with food selection and we said sure - we are so glad we did. Everything was so good, here is what we had: Ceviche del Dia: this was my absolute favorite. it had seafood and avocado and was to die for. Exactly the feel you want in Napa. Laid back but sexy and rich feeling. Menu had do much flexibility to it, lots of ways to experience the drinks and little bites. Me and my husband love TAPA's restaurants, so we can try multiple dishes. The only thing I did not like was the plates were served one at a time. I wish it all came out at once. They do not take reservations so be prepared to wait, although it is worth it. Mixed bag here. ($$? No way, easily $$$. Three people, just water, and our bill was about $120.) We went for lunch, it filled up quickly. We walked in the guy seated us... then we stat there for a long, long while (literally 10-15 minutes) before the waitress came over. She told us the kitchen is closing so we couldn't add more after the order so we got everything we could think of; octopus, empanada, steak, Brussel sprouts, shrimp, olives, etc. Being tapas, the sizes are very small so order a lot. Also, being Napa, the prices are high... $9 for one small empanada, for instance. Everything we had was really good, can't miss. However, I look at other places at this price point and you get a lot more there for your money. No complaints about the food but man, they really, really have to improve the service. It was awful. We sat without water then had to flag down the waitress to get the initial service then ordered... got our first dish and still no drinks so we had to ask again. Then at the end, she was MIA as well. Maybe they're trying to do the Euro thing where you wait and talk and flag them down when you're ready...? It's the only thing I can think of, instead of it just being bad service. Also, I felt bad for everyone trying to come in after they close after lunch... the door is open and the waiter and host were MIA so people would come in and sit... then eventually get booted. Put a sign up at least or have someone waiting by the door to let people out. To me, a restaurant isn't just good food. It's about the overall experience. Right now they have the good food but the overall experience is lacking... and this was during lunch time, I can't fathom how bad the service must be at night. read more
