But, we've given it several tries now, and the high prices are simply not justifiable for the TINY portions, and the service needs improvement. One of the best tapas restaurants I've tried. They were really busy the day we stopped in. The orders were a little slow coming out but we'll worth the wait. Just celebrated our 40th anniversary there. The food was sublime. We had a salad with goat cheese, peaches and orange blossom honey This was great. I will dream of the salad for a long time to come. The food was great and the seafood was cooked to perfection. The Paella is cooked in squid ink which gives it flavor. We also got the mushroom empanada and it was so good we ate it so fast. The service was nice and always refilled our waters. The ambience is a nice setting and they have upstairs seating as well. My only complaint is that the portion of the Paella dishes state it's for 2 people which I can agree with if you've both already ate but in my case it was our first meal so it's more for like one person. Super excellent dinner at Zuzu. I was looking for something different for my last night in Napa, and Zuzu really provided. It looked like they were full up for reservations online but we just walked in and were seated immediately. We started with the delicious pear salad and then the dishes kept coming. Everything was really tapas style so it's all small plates but it didn't end up really being that expensive overall and we enjoyed everything. I loved the lobster paella and the shrimp in garlic sauce was excellent. Service was great as well. I think it would be a fun place to go in a small group or on a date and hang out. We were concerned that we would have to wait if we didn't make reservations. When my wife and I showed up, we were quickly seated. However, once in our seats, things go much slower. Didn't, worry because it gave my wife and me some time to chat. The food on the other hand was fantastic, the Basil Tomatoes were the best ever. The desserts were great too! Food: Delicious and flavorful! We ordered a few caliente tapas dishes and the paella! Our favorite dishes were the Paella Del Dia, Flat Iron Steak, and the Gambas Al Ajillo. Definitely recommend the flat iron steak which is cooked medium rare only, btw! The paella is large enough to share between two people who are hungry! Tapas are always a little pricey though. Service: we had a reservation made at 7pm but came two hours earlier and they were able to sit us immediately around 5:30 pm. It was pretty empty at tho time on a Wednesday evening, but it picked up closer to 6/7 pm and got busy. Food was served immediately. Paella usually takes 30 min to make fresh they said but it came out less than 30 min after we ordered. The waiter we had was kind enough to out a candle on our dessert at the end of the meal for a birthday we were celebrating! They were always ready at serving water or removing dirty plates and providing new plates. Cannot complain. Ambiance: Fits the vibe! Love it. Dimly lit with music to fit the mood. The arros negra was a bit bland between the seafood and the rice. It was a rare warm evening and was looking spur-of-the-moment for a spot for a casual, light dinner for two in Napa. I did a Yelp search and up popped ZuZu. It had a few things going in its favor: good reviews, accepts walk-ins, and the menu on the website looked decent. The restaurant is situated centrally on Main St with a riverfront location and some outdoor seating. I always say to be wary of a place with a view, because that either means the food doesn't have to be that great, or you're paying a premium. In this case it felt like a bit of both. The menu we saw online turned out not to be current. Aside from everything being a good few dollars more expensive, there were a couple of interesting-looking dishes no longer on there. We ordered the boquerónes ($9), artichoke and portobello salad ($16), the sanddab ($24), veggie paella ($38), and 1 glass of white wine from the Canary Islands ($17). Everything was nicely presented (perhaps Instagrammable even, if that's your thing). Unfortunately portions were pretty small even for tapas, in particular the paella which was advertised as for 2 people but really wasn't that large. The crazy thing is that for only $4 more you could get a lobster paella with half lobster tail, so the veggie version definitely did not feel like good value. My dining companion doesn't do crustaceans otherwise we might have gone for that. To describe the other items in one word: the boquerónes were okay, wine was pleasant, salad was small, sanddab was the standout. This was definitely a busy spot and service was kind of chaotic. Getting water was a struggle. I felt a bit bad for the servers who were friendly but seemingly exhausted. Overall I'd rate it a 3.5, going back and forth on a 3 or a 4 but I don't think it really warranted a $100+ bill so rounding down. read more

I heard good things about this place, I've been to Spain a number of times and I love tapas so I wanted to check it out. What I liked: The paella. We had the squid ink paella with seafood and it was great. The paella feeds two and everything on it was tasty. The shrimp especially were cooked just right, not overcooked like they are at most places. The shrimp dishes in general at this place were spot on, if I came back again I'd only get shrimp. It's not the most authentic paella in the world, in Valencia (where paella came from) they'll tell you any paella that serves two is a tourist trap. But tourist trap or not this was pretty good. What I didn't like: Portion size + price. I know they're tapas, and tapas in Spain are really small too, but they don't cost $15-20 a plate. It's Spanish portion sizes at Napa prices which isn't a good mix. The boquerones dish only had two anchovies on it... It's not the best tapas place I've been too in America, but it's fine. Total after tax was just a little under $150 which isn't bad for some good quality food. Parking can be challenging in downtown but there are lots of parking lots. We stopped into Zuzu while strolling the Napa Lighted Festival. Although the four of us had to wait a bit, we received excellent service. Gin being Zuzu's specialty, we ordered some delicious craft cocktails and appetizers before digging into a variety of tapas including gambas, mussels, cod, sweet potato and other delicacies. So here's the deal with ZuZu, with so many downtown restaurants that require reservations, ZuZu is one of the few that are walk up only. I can't tell you how many times we've improved a night of wine bar'n and have been turned away by other places without reservations. To them I say, your loss and ZuZu's gain! There of course is a wait during peak dinner hours, but you can belly up to the bar and order some beer and/or wine while you wait. Tip: go later; after 8:30pm there's usually shorter wait. Now let's talk about how friendly the staff is, how yummy their sangria tastes and of course their killer tapas. Of the many times we've noshed at ZuZu, we always have spectacular service. I also have to point out something cool here, they have Pliney the Elder in bottles! I drank 3 of them on our last visit and was feeling so happy! Of course their Sangria is pretty great too, so don't forget to order a pitcher or 2, it goes down real easy. As for tapas, ZuZu's menu changes quite a bit so I won't go into much detail. But anything marked below with an * has been on the menu each of our recent visits and are crazy good, so order those for sure. Round 1: Tombo Ceviche (this was so light yet bursting with flavor) King Salmon Asian Pears *Plato de Jamon (plate of salty cured amazing ham) Round 2: *Tortilla Espanola (potato omelette) *Queso Frito (fried cheese) Tunisian Brick *Gambas al ajillo (shrimp in pimento sauce) Round 3: *Grilled Octopus (perfectly tender) *Seared Pork Cheeks *Akaushi Flat Iron (med rare) *Lamb Chops (med rare) Sides to go with Round 3: Roasted spaghetti squash Pan roasted Brussels Grilled Cauliflower Boniato (sweet potato) Once last thing, ZuZu is really well priced. No reservations, pretty nice sized place, open kitchen, good service, and delicious food. We came on a Saturday evening around 5:30ish after a day of winery hopping and could not find a reservation for anywhere that we wanted to eat at and then discovered this little gem. Our group had 8 adults and an infant in a stroller. We waited about 40 minutes at their sister restaurant with drinks a couple doors down. When it was time, the host came over and walked us upstairs to our table. We were sat at a large farm table with the stroller tucked neatly out of the way. Our server was attentive and quick with our orders. We ordered ALOT of food. We put in the paella order first since it takes 40 minutes to make and that paella was SO DAMN GOOD. We've been to Spain many times, and their paella is way better than anything I've had in Spain. It was so well cooked and full of flavor and seafood and it was topped with this lemon aioli sauce that was just the icing on the cake. We also ordered the flank steak, lamb chops, ceviche, bacalao, shrimp, pork cheek, and a few others. Everything was amazing. Very similar to the tapas throughout Spain with more intense flavors. The shrimp was probably our favorite tapa. There was only 3 shrimp per order, but the quality of the shrimp and that addicting sauce made it worth it. Some things we didn't like was how dark it was. I get dim lighting, but that was less than dim, we could barely read the menu and couldn't really see what we were eating. And with the stroller, there was no elevator to bring the baby+stroller up and down the stairs. We had to pick it up and carry it. Sounds like it could potentially be a liability if someone were to trip and fall down the stair in the dark. Also, how are the people who are disabled going to get up and down the stairs. read more
