We got there an hour before they closed too and didn't feel rushed at all to leave. They were very accommodating and let us stay until we finished dessert. This restaurant is also cashless so bring your cards here. There is a main casual dining area with a view of the bakery and some of the kitchen action. There also is a second room with a bar and a few tables. I've been coming here for a few years now. Over the past year they have discontinued their dinner service. Many of our favorite plates here were from dinner so our last several visits were lunch visits. A few servers back we were told that they were bringing back dinner but it's been a year since we heard that. This time I had the smoked salmon tartine (open faced salmon toast) It was fine and good. I'd prefer a tad bit more of the pickled fennel to make it taste special but it was still very good. My husband had the wagyu smash burger again. It was OK but now this is two or three times in a row that it wasn't as juicy as they used to serve it. We always enjoy the lemon cruffin here. I'm surprised that they don't have a line out the door for this particular baked good. Service was mostly very good. (This was hysterical...YOU'D Laugh) The server asked my husband while he was shoveling in some fries, "Are you still eating that?" What a cute little gem downtown. Great location if you are checking out all the vintage and antique shops. The parking is a little challenging so give yourself time before your reservation. The service was remarkable. Our guy was very attentive and helpful the entire time. Before I left I ordered a coffee, he saw I took the lid off to cool it down and without asking he brought me a cup of ice to help. He was very thoughtful and pleasant. The ambiance was loud but it's cute and simple inside and with the outside light coming in made it nice. There is a nice bar separated by a wall from the dining area. It is welcoming and nicely lit. I had the Reuben sandwich. The bread was dripping in butter but had a great flavor and was still crunchy. The pastrami, slaw and Russian dressing combo was really delicious and I'd recommend. The fries were good, I would maybe have cooked them 1 minute longer but I like mine more crunchy. My husband had the brunch burger with bacon and egg and he really liked it but would suggest to add another patty if you're hungry. My fil had the Smash double patty burger and he said it was really good. The buns were soft and tasted fresh and the meat was well flavored. Stopped in for coffee and a loaf of Sourdough to go. Wonderful dining room when you walk in, about 14 tables and 3 booths that probably seat about 4 people. Lots of seating at the bar area, and a large window table that seats about 6 people. It was not loud at all for a Sunday morning, around 10:30 am. Coffee is superb, sourdough loaf was soft and delicious. Lots of pastries and breads to choose from. Friendly staff and service. Food coming out on large plates and platters looked really good and the constant aroma of everything being cooked or brewed, just mouthwatering. It has Cole slaw with Russian dressing instead of sauerkraut. But it tastes very good. The dressing makes it messy though. But it was worth it. The fries are crispy despite being on the fat side. The sandwich is not large but it was filling and I couldn't eat all the fries. There's a bar on one side of the restaurant and a dozen or so tables. This was a great spot that my friends and I enjoyed. We arrived at 9:30am and easily got a table for 4. We were so enraptured in our conversation, we took forever ordering from the menu but the waiters were kind and patient. Hubby brought me here on a surprise impromptu date night, so I didn't really know what to expect. I was very pleased with my meal at 1228 Main. There are some issues, but this restaurant does a lot really well. The menu is very limited, and there are little to no vegetarian / vegan options. This really shocked me, especially for a restaurant in the Arts District. I'm unsure if the chef would be willing to accommodate, but it seemed like the type of place that you'd be told "no" if you wanted to modify something to be meatless. Minus a star for limited veggie options. Another thing I didn't like was the overall atmosphere. It's a working bakery and kitchen, which means there was a never-ending clatter from the kitchen as well as the distracting smell of bread baking. Both kitchens were also producing a lot of heat, and the restaurant was uncomfortably warm. I was not cool and relaxed, and they are in desperate need of better air conditioning. I cannot imaging how horrid the summer months must get, and I will be sure to avoid dining here during that time. I also found the service to be lacking. It wasn't unprofessional, but I would call it inattentive. For a nicer, chef-driven restaurant, I expect far, far better service. My water glass shouldn't be empty, and I would appreciate a server at least checking in on my within 5 minutes after my meal is served. Our waiter dropped our food and never returned, leading to us having to repeatedly try to flag down anyone to bring us water since we were desperate for a drink! Now on to the good! The food was so fresh and tasty. While the menu didn't offer detailed enough descriptions, I was happy with what I ordered. We shared a shrimp appetizer that was beautifully fried and presented, and the portion was large (actually, I'd say it was too large) for two people. I'd only order this again if we had one or more friends with us. The shrimp quality was exceptional, and the flavors were on point. Next up was the bread service with butter. Get this. It features whatever fresh breads they've made recently, and it was so good. I actually wish this was larger, I needed more bread slices! Our server gladly brought us extra butter for no additional charge, which I appreciated. For our entrees, hubby got the steak and I got the shrimp pasta. He said the steak was good, but not great. My dish was excellent. I loved the fresh flavors and the sweet peas added so much to the buttery sauce. We both had leftovers and agreed that the dishes reheated so well that they tasted almost as good as they did the night before! I was pleased with how reasonably priced the wine list was! I got a quality glass of sparkling wine for $14, and he got a special pickle juice cocktail for under $20. The cocktail was laughably small, but they didn't skimp on liquor or flavors. The wine list and cocktail list are incredibly well curated. The dining room was surprisingly empty at 6:30 on a Saturday night. It was very easy to secure a reservation at the last minute. I hope that's not forecasting a bad time ahead for this restaurant. Eventually a few tables started to fill in, but it was far from packed on a weekend night. Despite a few bumps in the road, I will recommend 1228 Main and will be sure to return. Absolutely delicious breakfast, came here with the wife for breakfast last weekend and had the best scrambled eggs and potatoes ever. Hella expensive so do not come here on a tight budget week, but good eats if you can make the sacrifice. I thought all scrambled eggs were just about the same but these were super fluffy, light and airy. I wish I made eggs this well. The smashed potatoes were seasoned and cooked to perfection. If you go I highly recommend you get their house made pop tart, they sell out they are so delectable. We stopped by again today to sample a couple items. I found their lemon curd kruffin (probably miss-spelled) to be just ok as I believe I make a better lemon curd at home, they need to punch up the lemon more. Every weekend I came here there was a different special item they were pushing - yet it was always good. Even matcha filled donuts (I am no matcha lover) were awesome!!! Of note, I would say breakfast burrito is fabulous, quiche is good and I really liked corned beef hash with eggs! Service is good. Consistently good. We randomly tried 1228 Main after we set up our consignment booth at Republic Goods and man their food was phenomenal! The bartender recommended their homemade pop tart and it did it disappoint! it was so flaky, buttery and full of fruit flavor! Then we shared a classic breakfast plate and the eggs were so light and fluffy! The potatoes were perfectly crispy. Overall, everything on that visit was great. Then we stopped in the next weekend for a Chai Tea Latte which was just okay, too sweet and not enough Chai spices. And a Lemon Curd Cruffin which was good but not great. So four stars since most of the food is great but I had the luck of trying a couple of things that weren't great in one visit. I can't believe it's taken me this long to check out this spot. What a cute place!! Came here with my sister in law, mother in law, and our friend. We stopped in for some lunch on a Saturday and it wasn't terribly busy. We were seated right away. I love that there is a dining room area as well as a separate bar area. They also do have a few seats outside for patio dining as well. But the ambiance inside is spectacular. To drink, three of us ordered the Hands Down cocktail. It sounded super refreshing. I did want to try the Dirty Anna, but I'll try that next time. The Hands Down cocktail was hands down the most delicious!!! I know that's cheesy, but I don't care. It was everything I wanted. Super refreshing. The glass it was served in was also so dang cute. For lunch, I ordered the fried chicken sandwich. I've been on a fried chicken sandwich kick lately, so I was glad I ordered this. It was soooo good! The slaw had a nice kick to it and the chicken was cooked perfectly. It was hard not to devour the entire thing. Definitely a hip place for brunch in the Arts District area. We came on a Sunday, which can be loud and crowded. Funky hip music played in the background. There are a few tables for outdoor dining on the sidewalk woth people walking by. We enjoy spicy food, however two of our dishes were way too spicy! The Corn Beef Hash was doused with Cholula Sauce, and perhaps my wife's Breakfast Burrito had too much jalapeños in the tamatillo salsa. Maybe the chef this day has a high spice tolerance. The Wagyu Burger and Chicken Sandwich were good, but nothing to rave about. I highly recommend their pastries and sweets! The Banana Nut Bread and Chocolate Croissant were delicious! When you purchase the tickets in advance, it seems a little steep but you get to make 3 French loafs, they serve wine , Prosecco and coffee along with charcuterie boards while your bread bakes. Chef Noel was awesome teaching the class and how to properly make some amazing bread. I first heard of this place at work, one of the police officers brought in pastries for us and it was one of the best chocolate croissants I've had! So i bookmarked it. I finally got to try the breakfast and it was just as amazing! I got the breakfast burrito and my partner got the chinois chicken salad and both were amazing!!! I want to go back so bad already to try more items! On our way out, we got some pastries and the chocolate chip cookie, by far is the best cookie I've had my whole life. Okay let's start with the food review: This place is so yummy!!! I totally recommend coming here if you want some good coffee and amazing pastries!! We had the fruit danish, the creme brulee tart, and the lemon cruffin. The lemon cruffin is DELICIOUS!!! If we come back that will be the go to!! The others were good but this stood out and the flavor is so good! We ordered the croissant sandwich and the breakfast burrito. Both were delicious but the star of the show was the potato's! They are so good and seasoned to perfection and the rosemary is the perfect touch! We had bottomless mimosas as well and they weren't shy on the champagne which is always a plus! Try this place!! Unfortunately we dived right in to the pastries and didn't take a picture. But I'll post some pics of the other stuff. My group and I visited on a Saturday afternoon--it wasn't too busy, though there was a bit of a wait. We ordered a chicken pesto sandwich, a strawberry custard dessert, hibiscus tea, and coffee. The tea wasn't sweet, which I liked, but it tasted watered down. The strawberry custard bread looked better than it tasted--just okay overall. I was especially looking forward to the chicken pesto sandwich, but it took about 20 minutes to arrive. When it finally did, I found a small black hair on the bread, which was pretty disgusting. My husband and I have come in several times throughout the year, but today it was horrible. I don't always dine in but I do like the pastries and bread. There are many other bakeries in town with good bread and I don't think I will be back here again. We came in with our toddler and the hostess was not welcoming. The hostess seemed annoyed and stressed. I was okay with that because I know working with the public is stressful, however it's not good for your business. We were seated and two people came up to us to ask for our drinks. The waitress took our order and seemed confused. My husband ordered a plate for our toddler because we are not just going to eat in front my daughter. Yes it was a whole plate to herself, but we take whatever she doesn't eat. They didn't give my daughter a cup of water and they forgot my coffee. Once we got our second cup of coffee 10 minutes later after asking two people again, the coffee was horrible. I can make a better pot at home. I make pour overs daily. This is coffee that they run through a machine with no care or thought. It was super burnt and tasted like stale beans. Don't order the black coffee go to Vesta trust me. I am pretty sure their barista doesn't know what they are doing. We get our food and my husband and I ordered the huevos rancheros. The food was cold. The beans were cold, and the eggs were barely warm. I didn't complain because at this point service as horrible. We got our daughter the 1228 main special which is eggs, bacon, toast, and potatoes. The bacon was candied or sweetened and my daughter didn't like it at all. The food was cold too. We finished and we waited over 15 minutes for our waitress to com back. Prior to her coming back, we asked someone else for the check and they never came back. Fix the service. Fix the coffee. Fix the greeting. You want your locals to like this place because when tourism is down you stay open. We visit Vesta regularly and Esther's. We won't be back here again. Smoked Bacon BLT Glass of Prosecco The creme brulee was ok for me, I did like the flakey Croissant. BLT was also delicious. The tomatoes were delicious. And my favorite was the Mortadella. I loved the flavor of this meat. It went well with the Foccacia Bread. The only negative I saw which is why I didn't give 5 Stars. I saw a worker with gloves on scratch her nose, grabbed her cell phone from her pocket then started touching the food that she was preparing. I was like yikes. They need to be more careful.
