Really love the noodles here! It's all made in house, in fact, there's a clear glass window where you can watch the noodles being pulled by the chef! There's so many different options for the shapes, my favorite is the prism shape. The soups are so flavorful as well, perfect for the cold winter weather. I also tried the stir fried option and they are very generous in their portion size. Cold dishes are good as well. Basically a hidden spot in the old 99 cent store plaza, but very worth trying. Finally got the chance to try 1919 Lanzhou in Arcadia today. It was empty when I got there when they opened at 11. The interior is small w a few tables, but by the time I had left, the place was packed and a few people were waiting outside. I ordered the Chef Special Spicy Beef Noodle Soup w "Wide" as my noodle of choice. They make your noodles from scratch, after you place your order and you can even watch them make it right in front of you! When they brought the bowl out, I can immediately smell the tantalizing scent of Sichuan peppers. The broth was very comforting w its bold, spicy, and numbing flavor profile. The heat level of the soup is legit spicy and numbing, so if you (yes, you!!) can't tolerate a lot of spice, get the regular beef soup. My mouth was pleasantly on fire which made every bite even more enjoyable because of the heat. The scratch-made wide noodles were soooo good and went well w the soup. YES... the size & shape of the noodle MATTERS!!! The beef slices were very tender. What made this soup interesting was the peanuts!! It had peanuts in it!!! We had just left the Arboretum at Arcadia and my brother chose this restaurant nearby. My brother loved his beef soup and my sister-in-law noodles with bean curd. The waitress was very nice. They have a 15 percent discount for new customers. I ordered noodles with eggs to share with my Mom. Portions are huge. The noodles were just ok. You can order the noodles in different shapes. How did I never know that 1919 Lanzhou Beef Noodle was in this plaza after being in Arcadia for so long?! I'm glad my friend introduced me to another hidden gem. We shared an order of House Special Lamb Rib Mutton, and I ordered the House Special Beef Noodle Sou with wide noodles for myself. My initial thoughts: I love lamb, but... what looks like boiled lamb? Yuck, that's so gamy! When it arrived, it was exactly as the picture - unappetizing. However, I was pleasantly surprised by not only my ability to tolerate it but enjoy its tenderness along with their spicy powder. If it were not for us being less hungry, we definitely would've fought over that last piece! The Beef Noodle Soup was equally delicious, though the broth landed more on the salty side. The noodles were of perfect, chewy consistency, and there was a generous amount of beef, no complaints here! Service throughout was fairly efficient - food within what felt like 5 minutes. Came here on a Saturday afternoon lunch. The noodles were made fresh and you can definitely tell! The chewiness and al dente feel is hard to miss. They have several types you can choose from with your choice of soup base. I had the pickled vegetable soup which came out a little spicy which I enjoyed. I have to say their appetizers were lacking. The cold seaweed tasted a bit old; lacking crunch. But the pig ears were ok and tasted fresher. They brought out the apps first but didn't give us any eating plates which was odd. They also didn't give us waters to start. The food did come out 10 mins later. I wish they had a bigger selection of drinks. They only had sodas and 1 type of canned sweetened tea. They clearly only focus on the noodle dishes. The menu is small. Ambience was ok. No booths. Seating is limited but the turnover is fast. Service is polite. We were greeted and seated right away. tl;dr: One of the best Chinese beef noodle soup in SGV. If it's your first time, try thick or flat noodle (best texture) and don't forget about the chili oil. If you have those days where you feel a bit sad, tired, or lonely or all.. and you need something to cheer you up: beef noodle soup. Noodle: fresh are as fuck, bouncier than a castle, pulled to maximize flavor and texture. The QQ-ness of the noodle here is unmatched to premade noodles. This spoils me; I can't eat ramen, noodle soups, or pasta without think about this kind of noodle. Only thing that comes close are fresh udons or hand-rolled pastas. Broth: this clear-broth is one of the best I've had for a mainland Chinese spot. Most of of the time you find clear broth in Cantonese/Taiwanese/Southern Chinese cooking unless you're eating hu tieu or lamb noodle soup. They got the herb/spice ratio locked down with the right amount of saltiness. I always drink all the broth and don't feel a msg attack. Chili oil: yes, this is how I like legit chili oil, not some pretentious $10-20 jar bs with too much 'exotic' ingredients. Nice roasted nutty chili flavor with a hint of spicy and aromatics. It cleanly grabs to your every bite of noodle. Heavenly Beef: marinaded just right. Has a light taste like pho brisket/flank, not overly braised nor lacking salt. Their beef taste better than most mainland Chinese places for sure. Thinly sliced for easy bite, they give a pretty good portion for $13.99 Adjust your cilantro/green onion to your liking and ask for extra spicy (it ain't your traditional sense of spicy) and let that chili oil coat your freshly-made noodles. The lady at the counter are nice and accommodating, don't be shy to try some 'ethnic' food. This place is old-school Chinese style, aka authentic. People who thinks this taste too light in flavor either don't appreciate good balance cooking/never had good food, likes ramen (think tonkotsu broth) too much, or are just plain used to bold (aka salty, greasy) flavors. I got the Braised Beef while my friend got the House Special. Safe to say, it's one of the more authentic beef noodle soup places in SGV, which very hard to find nowadays. My daughter is a HUGE fan of noodles and last time we took her to a Lanzhou beef noodle restaurant, she finished an entire bowl on her own (and she just turned 4)! So when we visited my in-laws over Thanksgiving, we found this place and decided to give it a try. Originally we had planned to have a get-together with a group of friends, but because the restaurant was on the smaller side, we decided to do take-out instead. We thought it would be fast ordering in-person; however, when we arrived, the restaurant was pretty full and they were inundated with phone calls that they made us wait longer than expected. Location is in the same spot as the 99c store parking lot and the restaurant is fairly new so when we went yesterday they're still running a 20% off promotion. The beef noodle - wow it is really good hand pulled noodles. They let you choose the type of noodles you want - I picked the flat and my kids had the original. I think because I chose flat I had more noodles. So my son likes to try everything spicy so he ordered the chef special. Note that for the soups - they do ask you for the level of spice. I got mine and my eldest son requested non spicy. His soup broth tasted really clean flavors. Mine has the right spice level for me but my youngest son's - well it was too spicy for him. I had to switch because he couldn't handle it. The beef is tender and flavorful. I liked the braised beef the most of all 3 that I tried. Husband found 1919 Lanzhou Beef Noodle when we were in the neighborhood. It really is a hidden gem of a noodle shop. They hand-pull their noodles right in front of you. There are about 25 seats in there, so it's not a huge place, but it's clean and nicely air conditioned. We were greeted as we entered and the ladies there are really nice. We got th menu and ordered two of the classic beef noodles and some green scallion pancakes. The pancakes were super crispy, if you like them like that, which I thought were good. And there were a ton of noodles in the soup with plenty of meat. It was so good, that I drank almost all of my soup and I hardly ever do that. They were nice enough to bring a plastic bowl and scissors so we could share with our son, and we didn't even have to ask for them. I will definitely be back if we're in the area! read more
