Tip: go during happy hour and friends so you can order all of their dishes and try EVERYTHING. Big back activities here. Came here with my boyfriend for dinner. We had a late lunch and weren't super hungry but didn't feel like cooking so we decided to try a new restaurant. We didn't realize Indochine was more of a bar restaurant until we sat down at our table outside. We ordered the frog legs, pork lechon and the curry with naan. We never had frog legs but they were surprisingly good and were my boyfriend's favorite. I loved the lechon salad the sauce was delicious although the onions could've been soaked in water to get rid of that bitter taste. The mushroom curry with vegetables was very good. I do not like spicy food and although it was quite spicy I enjoyed it a lot and the naan was very soft and perfect. The desert was amazing! It was ice cream with some sort of coconut cake and raspberry sauce. If you're a coconut lover like me you'll be satisfied. Everything on the menu comes in pretty small portions but is understandable considering it's mostly a bar that has whiskey tasting nights. The only downside was the lady who brought us to the table brought a rag and spray bottle but never actually cleaned the table. It was pretty dirty and had black specs like sand all over it. This is my second time here. The food is absolutely delicious, our service was friendly and great, decor and ambiance top notch. We loved all these factors so much that we came back and brought a retreat group here. Unfortunately both times it was so uncomfortably cold it was hard to enjoy the experience. I brought layers the second time but was still very cold and all the girls were freezing, 2 had to leave early and wait outside because they were so cold. We love the restaurant so much and it's delicious but not sure if it'll be my first pick next time unless they stop having the AC ice cold. Either that or I'll have to bundle up and wear a beanie and boots! I'm not sure why they keep it so cold when everyone is so uncomfortable with the temperature! We celebrated my bestie 40th birthday. We all had a goodnight and closed out the restaurant. Since it was a 40th birthday celebration, we all left the restaurant. Gifts were presented from our group of friends. My bestie had left her birthday gifts without noticing she had left it. The next day, my bestie decided to call the restaurant and ask if she left her presents there from the previous night. While on the phone, employee had mentioned "nothing was left and no one who worked the night before didn't mention anything." She decided to ask for a manager, employee mentioned to her that a manager from the restaurant will return her call. Two days had passed and no one, nor a manager returned her call and my bestie called again to f/u. My bestie also requested to see the cameras. Again, the employee gave her alibi's. After making multiple attempts calling the restaurant and asking for a manager, no one gave her an adequate answer, nor returned her phone calls. My point to this is be very careful what you leave behind. The employees are thief's and dishonest. Should we call a police and make a police report? If we do, they will probably have an alibI and probably deleted the videos that were recorded at the restaurant. read more

Walking towards this establishment you become immediately aware that you are going to enjoy a unique experience. I have never been to Southeast Asia but feel I had some introduction to it at 1938 Indochine. Parking is valet at $7 Menu is extensive for drinks and beverages and well composed for their signature dishes. Interesting to note they have two happy hour times. Mon. to Fri. 4pm-6pm then 8pm to Close. This involves a limited selection of tasty bites and specific beverages. The Food: Offered as small plates, we selected dishes from each category and ate family style. We lucked out and was not disappointed with any of our selections. Each presentation was appealing and well composed and the flavors blended well. Their house made sauces were available and for certain dishes provided additional umami. The one dish that was particularly enjoyed was the Indochine Lamb, perfectly cooked on a bed of whipped Okinawan Sweet Potato. So much enjoyed I didn't have time to capture a picture before the well portioned ribs were grabbed and demolished! Oh well. There was a lot of food enjoyed by the 3 of us that there was little left to take home. Another reason to check out this restaurant is the very beautiful and unique decor. If I wanted to feel transported to Southeast Asia you would be comfortable doing that here. Our server also happened to be tending the bar. He was very helpful in answering questions about certain dishes and what he didn't know he went back of house to find the answers. Once our orders were placed and the food brought to our table, it took some time before we were checked on again. I am not docking someone a point if they are being required to multitask and cover two separate areas. We visited for an early Valentines dinner on our last night home before returning to another country that we temporarily reside in. This was one the best meals we have had at a very unique upscale restaurant. Our waiter, Dexter, made the evening even more enjoyable with great recommendations and the best personality. The ambience, including the "speakeasy" private room upstairs, which you can rent for $1,500 and includes your own bartender, was gorgeous. The drinks were slow but the food came out quickly. The DJ was a tad loud and detracted from the unique south east Asian vibe. Live music would have been better or maybe some Khruangbin or Thievery Corporation. I dined here with my brother during the week. We go there early and were able to order off the happy hour menu. From the happy hour menu we ordered the fried frog legs and krazy fried rice. From the regular menu we had the green papaya mango salad and pork belly lechon. All the dishes came out about the same time. I found all dishes tasty. The papaya mango salad had sweetness and tang to the flavor. The papaya and mango were sliced thinly. I did enjoy the edamame in the salad as it added a needed crunch. The lechon was not greasy due to the soy lime juice which helped with cutting it down. I didn't find the pork belly pieces fatty. Again the edamame added a nice crunch to the dish. The frog legs looked liked frog legs. If you can't get pass that, you won't be able to eat it. As for the taste, the meat was like chicken in texture. You just need to get past the shape. Our reservations were for 5:30 so we were able to order and eat before we had to leave. Everything was so good that we didn't have any leftovers, which is rare for this gang. Two ladies in our party were vegetarians so they ordered the Indochine Mushroom Curry, which came with a few slim pieces of Naan bread. The curry was delicious and needed more than Naan to soak up the gravy so we ordered rice. The Vegetarian Imperial Rolls were tasty and came with a sweet chili sauce. Was looking forward to the Spicy Garlic Noodles but one of the ladies wasn't able to eat spicy so we had the hot sauce on the side. I would like to try this dish with the sauce next time. The Ribs were absolutely tasty and very tender and sweet. Even though we were pretty full we had to have dessert so we shared the Japanese Yuzu Cheesecake and the Tapioca Desert (forgot the name of it but it tasted wonderful) . Nothing stands out good or bad making it a solid spot for a social gathering. Soapbox Rant: Why the restaurateur opted to pay homage to the colonization of Vietnam as part of French Indochina is bizarre. Your culture is trash, ours is better, do what we say? What's next? South African apartheid breakfast nook? Maybe an American slavery plantation bistro? End Rant. The food is food. The grilled scallops, OK. Small scallops in shell hit with a calamansi infused aioli, covered in cheese, sprinkled with McCormick bacon bits, street food correct. The "Imperial roll" (deep fried rice paper rolls with minced pork, vegetables and long rice), oily but flavorful. Skip the strange tasting sauce that comes with and instead opt for the chili oil. Straight forward escargot in shell. Chewy. Could have been poached longer with more white wine before being stuffed in shell and broiled with garlic butter. Finally the shooter trio (beef tartare, oyster, scallop) makes for comedy. Try to shoot any and all the liquid will be in your mouth but none of the protein. In fact, the beef tartare is so stuck at the bottom of the cup it needs a chopstick to free it. Aside from the scallop, flavors don't match. Pass. Good list of fairly priced brown libations. Inexpensive HH. Servers are young but enthusiastic and do a great job keeping the evening flowing. Destination worthy? Four stars because friends just make the experience better. Arriving at 4:30, valet parking and enjoying Happy Hour pricing helps too. Because we were early for our reserved table time we sat at the bar. Can't beat the price of a 1942 Don Julio shot of tequila for $20 at HH when regularly priced at (gulp) $42. Seated at our table, right off the bar, we had an awesome view of everything going on. I like to watch the plates of food going by as it's like a walking menu photo and helps you decide what to eat and drink. Started with their version of an Aperol Spritz, coconut infused h2O instead of soda was actually quite refreshing then switching to a bottle of Gerald Bertrand French Bubbly which was surprisingly good. First appetizer to arrive was the Grilled Ocean Scallops. Big shell, little scallop covered with cheese and bacon bits. Bacon bits were off putting as they weren't crispy just hard....who left the bag open on the counter hard. There were four per order and there wasn't a fight as to who was eating the fourth! Next dropped appetizer was the Spicy Lemongrass fries. Good fries but not in the least spicy and didn't have a hint of lemon....just yummy fries. Next up, the 1938 Trio of shooters. I really need to read the menu better as I thought this was an oyster trio, not! One oyster, one seared scallop and one beef tartare. We each had an order and I don't think I was the only surprised face at our table after the first one....it was very funny as we three were grabbing our phones to look at the menu description. I think I liked the Imperial Rolls the best of all the appetizers we ordered. Pork and veggies rolled in rice paper then deep fried. They went well with the trio of sauces, three rolls cut in half easily shared. Last of all the Escargot. We each had an order of six served in the shell, another case of big shell little escargot, served with sic little slices of baguette. Needed more of the butter/garlic stuffed in the shell. They were on the chewy side and needed to either be sautéed longe or baked in the shell longer. I make these at home as my family loves them but I use bigger snails and in mushroom caps. There was an order f fried chicken in here somewhere which wasn't memorable. Espresso martini, not a normal espresso martini but none the less very good topped off the event. Overall this was an enjoyable experience and I will be back. Easy to get to, breeze to park, great service. The food was really tasty, the atmosphere was really fun and the service was excellent. I will come here again, and again. It was great for a group event, we celebrated and everyone was so accommodating. The selections of food or fast and so super tasty. read more

It was a girls night out, and we wanted to try something new. 1938 Indochine had good reviews so we decided to give it a try. Parking can be an issue. I made the mistake of parking at the Salt parking lot, but apparently they do not validate and it is $3 every 30 minutes. Next to the restaurant, they do have valet parking for seven dollars. The Décor of the restaurant was warm and inviting. It's a good start to dinner! The food menu is fairly limited, and all dishes come in "small plates". The small plates run between $10-$20, with most being in the $15-17 range. The cocktail/wine/beer menu was very extensive, but not so interesting to me since I do not drink. Yes yes, I am a stick in the mud!! Let's move on. We tried the Thai beef broquette, krazy fried rice, imperial rolls, warm Thai ribeye and tofu, Le citronella fried chicken, and glass shrimp. Most things were pretty tasty, some a little on the bland side. Portions are small considering the prices. Service was OK, but slow. when our bill came, we paid in cash already taking in consideration a 20% tip, but was not brought any change. I thought that was kind of weird that our waiter just assumed that we were giving him a 60% tip!! After waiting for 15 minutes for change, we had to ask another server we were still waiting for a change from our server since we could not find our server. Friday night Pau Hana at 1938...the bar was full and the restaurant was pretty busy. We were greeted immediately by the hostess and the GM (Joseph). Even though we didn't have a reservation they were able make a few adjustments and accommodated us quite quickly. Service was excellent - we had the cast iron beef tataki (super tender), poke (so fresh & ono), crab lumpia, krazy fried rice (don't forget to add shrimp ) and the oyster shooters (a must try). Overall a fabulous experience will definitely be going back soon!!! read more
