[[HIGHLIGHT]]From the moment you step inside, 1938 Indochine delivers serious ambiance: vintage French-Colonial décor, exotic touches, and an atmosphere that feels more "destination night out" than casual dinner.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Iw as there in a private event. So the menu was limited. The menu is an inventive mix of Southeast Asian-inspired street food flair--Vietnamese, Thai, Laotian influences--with upscale presentation and elevated ingredients. In short words, large prices, small servings. :) The bar is sub standard. I asked for three different whiskeys before I just asked what do you have back there. The best [art is the outdoor cigar bar.

I came here for a girls night. The food was good and we shared three plates. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant is super cute and feels clean.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We ordered the steak, hamachi, and mushroom curry. They were lovely. The portions were enough to share, but not a ton of food. The server gave us a bunch of options for gluten free, which was very helpful. The sauces were on the side for the other gals to enjoy. Service was slow. He was very nice and probably understaffed, but 30 minutes to get two cocktails and a glass of wine was really too long fora mid week night. We also had a billing issue that took far too long to resolve. In two hours, we each had two drinks and one round of food.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]This place was amazing and fun for our group to go hang out and try so many different dishes.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I would say next time I would not do the whole fish that cost $100!!! or the frog legs that tasted a little chewy. But everything else was hands-down amazing.

I think we caught them on an off night. There was an event going on inside and they were seating guests outside, which was fine with us. The menu is a lot of shareable bites and with three of us there were ordered the Ahi Poke ($15), Cast Iron Beef Tataki ($23), and Imperial Roll ($16). Our server had made some suggestions and ended up bringing rice the the table accidentally, which we decided to keep- we didn't want it to go to waste and knew we'd be able to eat it (Krazy Fried Rice $12). It took a bit for our server to bring us water and we were more sensitive to this because we had just finished working an event and were sorely in need of water. They ended up bringing a couple bottles and we immediately started hydrating. I think the Imperial Roll was the favorite, crunchy and flavorful. I enjoyed the poke but a few of us thought it was a bit salty, and thinking back it probably would have gone better with white rice than the wonton chips to tone down the salt level. I love poke, so I ended up eating most of it. The fried rice was ok to me, but one of my coworkers seemed to really enjoy it. It's wok tossed was a little crunchy with pork belly, veggies, garlic and egg. The Cast Iron Beef Tataki came out last, I think it's supposed to be a table side thing, because the person who brought it out had it going from sizzling to smoking and I got hit in the face with all the smoke. It was good, but the veggies with it seemed to outshine the meat in my opinion. I really like the tomatoes and mushrooms that came with it. Overall I'd probably try it again if friends wanted to go, but not if they're hosting a private event at the same time. I think the staff may have been overwhelmed or understaffed.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Located in Kakaako right across the street from the SALT block, 1938 Indochine is a spacious restaurant serving a variety of food and drinks.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] There is parking in the structure right next to the restaurant. The parking was free when we went in and there were a good amount of open spots. There did not seem to be a ton of spots but our timing seemed to work out. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant inside is nice with lighting that is a little dim. There are a good amount of tables to be sitting at, a number of the tables were booths that felt pretty private.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]There is dark wood and a sort of boho feeling so it feels a bit fancy but in a more relaxed way.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We ordered the Krazy Fried Rice, Malaysian Fried Chicken Wings, and Crab Lumpia. Everything came out pretty quickly. The portions were a bit on the smaller side but not bad. The fried rice was quite good with a strong garlic flavor that we enjoyed. The fried chicken was pretty good, just did not feel like there was much meat. The crab lumpia was yummy and flavorful, especially with the sauce. We also got the lychee martini and lychee spritzer. The drinks were pretty good. Everything was a bit on the pricey side, as it was not happy hour. Next time, we'll try to go during their happy hour.

A-okay. Dessert, YES! Service, excellent. Ambiance, loved it. Food, not quite on par. Would I return? Probably not...unless I came specifically for the desserts! We ordered the banana lumpia and calamansi tart. I can confidently say this was some of the best banana lumpia I have ever had. Also, the ice cream and salted caramel sauce is on point. The calamansi tart was also super delicious. If I could rewind time I would probably skip the food and order every one of their desserts. Food - we were informed the food is family style, so I was expecting fairly large portions. If a family of three came in and were happy with one piece of each entree that would be fine. I'm no big back (maybe I am? lol) but I think three pieces of lumpia, three small bao's, and three chicken wings is a stretch to say it's family style. Anywho, I felt the portions were relatively small. We also ordered the steamed cod, fried rice, and a number of other dishes, but felt the flavors fell short. Dipping sauces and accompanying garnishes were reminiscent of packaged variety (sweet chili sauce, jarred pickled carrot and radish), though we did really enjoy the peanut dipping sauce that came with the chicken satay. I also ordered the spicy noodles as it was recommended by the server, but it reminded me of spicy instant noodles. I was pretty disappointed on this one...I love instant noodles (no hate) but it wasn't what I was expecting in terms of quality for this type of restaurant. The parking is easy. There are reserved stalls in the attached garage. There were also guys smoking cigars in the outdoor seating area. I am not a fan of cigar smoke but didn't bother me much, and they were pretty respectful to stop smoking when we walked by.

Loved the cute and unique decor and comfy booths and the clean and beautiful restroom-just sitting in the booth made us giddy! Dinner date with my daughter- The steamed fish was delish with jasmine rice- the beef was also tasty with the fried rice and eggplant - banana lumpia was as good as every yelper says-portions are small but I would come again for the ambiance and its dog friendly!

I don't know why I haven't tried Indochine sooner. The restaurant is so cute and the food was also very good!! I will just say a few dishes were a bit heavy handed with the salt, but all in all a very pleasant experience. Everything is ala carte and we had a party of 6 so the server suggested ordering several dishes to share. We ended up getting the fried rice, noodles, curry, steak, egg drop soup, and fried eggplant. The eggplant was my favorite of the night and I'd go back just for that.

Dining at 1938 Indochine feels like stepping into another world, it's steamy, mysterious, and charged with the sense of adventure. The atmosphere alone sets the stage, and with a glass of their signature whiskey (or whisky if one prefers) in hand, you can almost imagine setting off on a journey the moment you leave your table. Located on the ground-level of a sparkling new building on the corner of Keawe Street and Ala Moana Boulevard, 1938 Indochine comes from the Aoki Group, which comes from restaurateur Kevin Aoki who owns concepts as varied as Teppanyaki Grills to Sushi Restaurants throughout the United States with a majority of concepts based in Hawaii. 1938 Indochine was dedicated to honor Kevin's father, Rocky Aoki who was the founder of Benihana and was considered a pioneer of Asian cuisine. The year 1938 also represents a pivotal time in history in Southeast Asia when the French colonized a majority of countries including Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia, and referred to this territory as Indochine. Against this evocative backdrop, 1938 Indochine pairs its cuisine with an atmosphere designed to transport. A massive marble bar and communal table anchor the space, while cushioned banquettes and rich red silk curtains draped from the second-floor balcony create a sultry elegance, upstairs, guests can even enjoy a fine cigar to complete the experience. What brought me here was a dear friend who suggested we try this place for Happy Hour, of which was not in place on the Friday evening that we visited, but we still managed to enjoy a few dishes and drinks as the sun began to set on our Hawaiian week. In addition to a list of beverages of craft cocktails, wine, beer and sake, 1938 Indochine carries their owner's own collection of American Whiskey and Scotch Whisky, in addition to other liqueurs. They also have a food menu consisting of their Signature Dishes, Vegetables, Poultry, Seafood, Satay, Beef & Pork, Soup & Sides and Le Sweets. Only two of their dishes were over twenty dollars, so much of the menu at 1938 Indochine can be considered quite reasonably priced. We ordered two food items from their menu, Malaysian Fried Chicken Wings, which were crusted five spice chicken wings finished with vinegar and chili; and their Pork Belly Bao Buns, which were three steamed buns filled with braised, roasted & fried crispy pork belly served with atchara and roasted shallot mayo. To pair with our brief yet surprisingly filling meal, I ordered their Momotaro Spritz cocktail which featured Aoki sake, strawberry, basil, crème de pêche and lime, while my dining friend ordered a glass of their Quilt red wine which was a Cabernet Sauvignon from the Napa Valley. As we sipped on our drinks our two dishes came out alongside them and the real surprise were the Chicken Wings, which were actually traditional wing size chicken wings of which I have been rarely served at a restaurant. When paired with their sweet dipping sauce, it was the perfect combination, especially when sipping on a nice libation, which the team at 1938 Indochine definitely knows how to create. Our total bill was $64.92 which was more than reasonable considering when my dining mate ordered a second pour of their red wine, no charge was included. Talk about service with that special boost. Food that is unique yet somewhat familiar thanks to the abundance of fresh and flavorful preparation techniques are my takeaway from dining at 1938 Indochine. I can't wait to return to try more of their dishes including their Cast Iron Beef Tataki and Wagyu Bone Marrow, both of which sounded delectable. With its gorgeous ambiance and creative cuisine, 1938 Indochine makes being transported feel more authentic than ever.

This is one of those spots on Oahu that deserves A LOT more attention, but you also don't want it to get too popular so it can always be your best kept secret. First off, the ambiance is like no other. You get transported to another world when you enter and walk past the bar. It's dark and intimate, perfect for date night while also being aesthetically pleasing for a get-together with church friends (like us). Basically, instagram ready for any occasion! We came here on a weeknight, so service was great; we were able to spend some time talking to our server and that is a plus in my book. Any server who gives us their time can really enhance the experience. I noticed there's actually two levels so I'm guessing this place can get pretty busy on weekends, but who knows, I can only speak of what I know. The food: SOOOO GOOD, like unbelievable good. After our first bite my husband and I knew we had to come back to conquer the menu. My husband got the cast iron beef tataki (hotplate) and it tasted as good or even better than the fanfare it was presented with. Our friends got the imperial roll, crab cake, and pork belly. Highly recommend coming here with friends so you can taste a little bit of everything LOL I had the crab lumpia and Krazy fried noodles with porkbelly and I wish we ate more appetizers so I could eat half and go home with leftovers. Seriously, 10/10 recommend for anyone, anytime, and any reason.

Came for happy hour and we left more than happy! A beautiful restaurant with various styles of seating. The cool marble bar was comfortable and gives you a nice view of all the happenings! We loved the Fried Oyster Mushrooms, actually ordered a second. Lemongrass fries were top quality spuds and super generous. Black Bean Eggplant, delicious as was the Krazy Fried Noodles. This place should be busier as it delicious and affordable in a sexy setting!

Does Indochine still have a happy hour?

YES, according to their Instagram page. https://www.instagram.com/1938indochine/?hl=en

Can we bring in a cake?

Do they take reservation for happy hour? And what time is their happy hour? Thanks.

I don't really know the time for reservation for happy hour and last time I remember the time was a bit later. I think 7:00 or 8:00:) probably changed now:)

Can you smoke cigars outside on the paito?

Yes, after 9 pm per the webpage

    Are there any gluten-free options?

Yes, there are several items on the menu. Chicken, pork, seafood, vegetable.

Is the outdoor seating dog friendly?

Sorry May I don't know. You may want to call and ask. Staff there is friendly

Everything about this place is amazing... except maybe parking, but that's usually always a problem in Honolulu. However, I always get orders to-go, so I just end up parking on the street, picking up, and going on my merry way. If you decide to dine in, the ambiance is super cute with both indoor and outdoor seating. Last time I was there, they were expanding the outdoor seating. They also have a bar with bar seating inside. Their Pad Thai is perfect! Nice and moist without being soggy and definitely not dry. I like to request a side of yellow curry, which they usually accommodate because I like to dip my noodles in it. Service is always quick and simple.

This, however, will probably be my first and last visit. The place is cute enough, with a large back garden area where I chose to dine. Service was also great. I appreciate the little button at the table that I could click for service. The food, however, was mediocre at best. My friend and I ordered the pad Thai with tofu, ginger chicken, chicken satay, and pork larb. The pad Thai was the best dish, but it was very tomatoey, which I did not expect. The chicken with ginger had very little chicken. It was mostly julienned vegetables, including celery which I do not care for. The chicken satay was kinda dry and most certainly needed the peanut sauce to make it palatable. The larb was very dry with very bland flavor, served on one lettuce leaf and a wedge of cabbage. How am I supposed to eat that? All of it was quite disappointing, especially for the price point. As I was eating this meal I remembered the Thai food truck at the end of Ward, where Fisherman's Pier used to be. Now THAT was some good Thai food. I guess that was the best thing about this meal-remembering where I could get really good Thai food-so that the next time I'm having a craving, I can go back over there...I hope it's still there.

I just looked today and it is now closed until June 5. Maybe they are doing renovations. We came for Mother's Day. I was a little nervous because it's been years since we have eaten here and it appeared to look like a lot of tourists eating here. I'm Thai and I was wondering if I was going to be disappointed. I remember the food being OK so I kept an open mind. I decided to order something I normally would not which is the clay pot crab with glass noodles. it was OK. The crab didn't have a huge prominent taste and glass noodles are just meh to me. We also ordered the crab fried rice which was exceptional. I would definitely order that again. There was so much flavor in the rice. I also ordered a yum salad with tofu. That was also good. I loved the chili lime dressing and the added cilantro made it taste even more fresh. The lettuce leaves were huge though. I'm not sure why they were the size of a hamburger patty. It made for eating the salad challenging and messy. My kid had the salmon curry. She loved it. She doesn't handle spice so she asked for a level 2. Level two was spicy for her but she was able to eat it. Being Thai I did not feel it was spicy at all. But it did have a little bit of heat. The Mr ordered the crispy garlic chicken. It was a huge plate of it. He said it was good. He also ordered beef masuman. I will say that the portion seemed tiny. He said it was also good. I actually was pleasantly surprised this time around as I remember coming years ago and it was just OK. About the music. I did read lots of comments about their music Choice. It's not classical but jazz. To my astonishment it was extremely loud. The music Choice was not the issue but the loudness of it. I'm not sure if they tried to make it loud to sound like live music or not. We couldn't even talk to each other because we would've ended up shouting. That's really our only complaint.

After a long day at work I was thoughtfully given tickets to a craft fair which I absolutely love and was thinking of going though between parking and entry can be costly but thank you to Crystal R for the thoughtfulness as that made a huge difference and gosh really enjoyed my night for sure. After much retail therapy for myself we were hungry and it was pretty late for a spot to find that's not closed and not fast food and remembered Nu'uanu Shopping Plaza nearby but mores Bangkok Chef was just around the corner. Since it was just about half hour to closing there was plenty of parking that right in front of the restaurant that's usually filled it couldn't be any easier as this wide open concept is unique but just love the thought of a nice hot meal. I got the Pad Ki Mao which say "medium spicy" but love that it comes with bean sprouts, and fresh basil and how it came pipping hot and how wonderful it was...lots of seating inside along with lots of colorful art as the Moili'ili location is closed it's nice to have other locations to settle my cravings along with a nice hot meal. Thank you!

So we walked right in on a whim and honestly couldn't have made a better decision. The vibe inside is casual and lively, great for people watching right in the heart of Waikiki. Staff were on top of everything from the moment we sat down -- attentive, friendly, and helpful with the menu. No complaints there at all. Now the food -- let's talk about it. The Papaya Salad was hands down one of the best we've ever had. Fresh, bright, punchy flavor. Fair warning though -- it has some kick to it, so if you're spice sensitive just give them a heads up. The Chicken Pad Thai was excellent, and we loved that it came with tofu as well -- generous and flavorful. The Tom Yum Soup with shrimp was a hit at the table, that classic sweet, sour, and savory broth done right. Kids enjoyed it too which is always a win -- and that's saying something because kids are tough critics. Prices are reasonable especially for being right in the middle of Waikiki where everything tends to cost a premium. Walkable from pretty much everywhere on the strip which makes it super convenient for a spontaneous dinner like ours.

We arrived shortly before 11:30am, and thankfully we were seated immediately (in a booth!) as there was only 1 group dining (this would be the antithesis when we departed as the restaurant was packed after 12:00pm). We got settled in our booth and looked over the menu. Collectively, we ordered/shared: Spicy Eggplant Pad Thai with shrimp Papaya Salad Siam Jungle Curry with chicken Steamed Fish with Soy Sauce I honestly couldn't decide which dish was my favourite, as I thought they were all a generous portion and flavorful. My mom complimented the eggplant and steamed fish repeatedly, and while I also favoured the eggplant, I found myself gravitating to the curry throughout the meal. My SIL also liked the fish and eggplant, while my brother had many good things to say about the pad Thai. We did take some leftovers home, and as we packed up the food I wondered to myself why I hadn't returned to SGC sooner. SERVICE The staff friendly, patient, and very polite.
