I find that their prices are slightly better than other similar options in the area, especially considering that coffee/tea and juice are included with most morning meals, and they aren't stingy on the refills (though no refills on juice). Ambiance is very casual and nothing special, but with its corner location, I found it less cramped than other Yelpers did - maybe it's all the 2nd Ave. construction that gives it that closed-in feeling. The omelets are prepared American style and are always a solid option, though I usually do away with the home fries and opt for the additional 2 egg whites to make a protein-filled meal the size of a newborn. GET IN MY BELLY! So, what sets this diner apart from the others? Impeccable service. No objections or errors on even the most complicated of orders. Fast, efficient, reliable, and perfectly attentive enough. You won't be subjected to random diatribes from your server about eating strawberries in England or getting a pilot license in Florida (Coffee Shop on 85th and 3rd) here at 3 Decker. I came here to order takeout, the waitress was busy assisting another client when I walked in and I didn't mind waiting for her to finish but the manager took it upon herself to yell at me "what do you want" as if I was interrupting her by wanting to spend money in her establishment. Service was adequate, environment was adequate and the food was adequate. Those that gave this diner a 1 star must not have eaten at very many diners, especially those not in the 5 boroughs. That being said the potato side that came with my eggs and bacon was undercooked and lackluster, everything else was fine or good. That plus a bottomless coffee was 10 bucks- you get what you pay for. Not worth it unless you live really close. Took me 2 minutes to get there however. Average diner fare here. I actually eat here fairly regularly, since they are the closest diner to my apt, but strictly as a matter of convenience Oh, I'm not complaining, the food here is ok. Nothing was ever found to be bad or anything, just that 3 Decker is just so cookie-cutterly standard ::yawn:: Standard diner mainstays here, as well a a bunch of fairly decent salad choices, many a tad more expensive than they're really worth, though. A slight additional gripe is that, although their prices have been rising steadily - which is par for the course on the UES - they have recently JUMPED up considerably due to the lack of business a la the Second Avenue subway project. I wouldn't mind that so much, except that the quality, quantity and variety of the food has not budged in at least the past 14yrs. that I've been eating here. The decor here has remained perennially the same, as has most of the staff, who have always been attentive but never too chummy or bubbly. Take-out and delivery has really been this restaurant's forte. Maybe because the springs in all the booth benches have given way decades ago, and the few tiny little tables with matching tiny chairs are usually occupied by a cast of elderly regulars, making take-out seem a whole lot more comfortable. read more

For the price, this food is great! I have been here a couple times and everytime my food is tasty, the bill is low and the service is fine. On the weekends they also sometimes give you a free shot of their fresh squeezed orange juice, which is pretty good. Obviously, this is no gourmet diner, so its unfair to judge it like so. The food is pretty simple, you won't be getting anything extravagant, but if all you want is a stack of pancakes, some eggs or maybe a sandwich, this is your place if you want to spend less than $10. The staff is friendly enough, they arent overly concerned with how your food is, but thats because they are busy. I have always gotten my food quick and had any requests filled right away. I wanted a change from the higher prices dinners in the neighborhood so we thought we'd try 3 Decker. It was just OK. I had a cheeseburger deluxe with fries. It was good but not very juicy. Also it didn't come with some raw onion, this perplexed me. Hubby had eggs and he seemed happy enough. The service though was not good. Our waiter seemed to be busy with other tables in another side of the restaurant and our food was ready at the window (we could see it), and it sat there for too long until he brought it. I would have liked my food to be brought when it came out hot. Also he didn't check back with us so I wasn't able to ask for the missing raw onion. Now that I am in the process of (fingers crossed) relocating to NYC, I had to visit my aunt. The only place she really likes to go is Triple Decker (don't ask why), so I took her here. It was later in the night. I decided to order a Chicken sandwich whereas my Aunt ordered blueberry pancakes. She loved her pancakes (always has), but my sandwich was okay Yes, its a dinner and I ordered some chicken. Get over it. The chicken was dry and the sandwich was so so. 3 Decker is a bargain. A small chicken Greek with grape leaves cost me $9. And it was by no means small either. My only complaint was they don't serve Greek dressing. A Greek salad with Italian dressing just didn't taste right. Nonetheless, I give this place four stars for tasty food and great prices. 3 Decker Restaurant is a old relic with classic taste. It delivers a retro/vintage atmosphere with lazy execution. The food was decent for its price, but the service was TERRIBLE. First, when they welcomed us, they gave me and my wife the menu, asked us if we wanted anything. We told them what we wanted but when they asked "anything else", they curved our order because we took long to respond. The place wasn't busy i might add and the food was served quickly. The quality is solid not best. I asked the waitress for another drink, came back with it, i said "thank you", she ignores me and walked past us like we did something wrong, that's another complaint with this place. Their Lemonade they have is distasteful, it tasted sour, bitter, ripe and raw and wasn't made well as it had a lot of pulp. Most of the employees were displaying racial discrimination which is unfair in modern age. A few of them have done great service and shown appropriate manner like a young lady at the front and a elderly man that nicely gave us flowers on our desk. Others were secretly gossiping in spanish about us and other customers. That's not professional for business and it displays a bad image onto this restaurant but overall, it was affordable and it was worth a try. I tried the Mexican steak special. the meat was okay and the beans were okay. The rice was simple white rice with no seasoning. The plate comes with roasted tomatoes, onions, and jalepenos. The tomatoes and onions were avoided. I was excited about the jalepenos, but they had NO flavor or spice. I ate them whole and had to add hot sauce to them to get flavor and some spice. We just moved to the neighborhood and wanted to support the closest diner hoping we could become a regular. We got an omelette and there was an egg shell in the omelette. When we let the Waiter know he replied that he was going to take $1 off our check. Yes... lol 1 dollar. The cheese burger was also terrible. I really like this place. The food is fine. The service, depends on who waits on you. The first time I went to this place, was for lunch. I had their meatloaf. Yummy! Meatloaf, mash potatoes plus peas and carrots. I was in heaven. Of course, I could not finish it all, so I had to doggie bag it. The waiter was very nice. The next time I went to the diner, I went for breakfast. And I hate to say this, but the waitress who waited on me, must've worked the overnight or early morning shift, bc she looked miserable. I definitely put my big smile on and tried to be as pleasant as possible w/her. Grouchy face. The food was fine. I wanted more coffee, but could not locate my waitress, so I asked the helper to refill my cup. And when it was time to pay my bill, again, the waitress was nowhere to be found. The helper went to get her. She came over to me and asked, "what did you have again?" I repeated my order for her so she could give me my bill. I left a 20 percent tip, but she did not deserve it. I've been going to this neighbor dinner with my little family for a few years now. Until recently we thought that the place was a fine spot to get a breakfast from time to time. That morning we ordered; waffle for my daughter, soft boiled eggs and fruits for my wife and eggs Benedict for me. After an unusual wait the food came. The waffle were perfect. The soft boiled eggs where hard boiled and the hollandaise sauce was so hot (red pepper hot) that it was simply uneatable. We called our waiter to replace the soft boiled, he took the eggs away when I tried the eggs Benedict, I almost shocked by the incredible amount of hot spice in the sauce. The owner was watching a soccer game on the TV near by. After a few attempts to call him to our table, he finally came. I thought at first that I was doing him a favor in politely and quietly telling him that something was wrong with the hollandaise sauce. His reaction was really interesting, with a rare condescending attitude he told me that if I don't know what I was ordering, I shouldn't order it ! I thought that was a bad dream, I was trying to help the guy and he slapped me like I was an ignorant annoying customer. ( even if it was the case, an owner cannot speak like that to a customer, it's simply bad business) I finally answered that I was a client for years to his place and I know how a hollandaise sauce taste like. He took the plate away with a "whatever" look and told me that I could order something different. A side note: when an hollandaise sauce is hot instead of the usual lemony taste, that could indicate an attempt to mask a rancid butter taste, hence the after taste after the burning in this particular one. The soft boiled eggs came back in the same bowl and state but broken up this time... really ?! When the bill came from a waiter that couldn't get away fast enough from our table. I asked him to come back and told him that his service was just fine but the quality of the food was simply unacceptable, he didn't even blink when he ripped the bill and went away. Pros: -Instant seating for 6 at 1:30p on New Years Day -Water served with clean ice in presumably clean glasses -Silverware and napkins provided with no extra charge Cons: - It required 10 minutes for menus to be delivered - Every food item ordered, excluding the actual Grilled Cheese sandwich, was delivered sub-par. - The 'salad' consisted of more toppings than it did any sort of edible leafed vegetable. Every dressing but the mix-it-yourself oil and vinegar looked (and tasted) like it was made of 95% mayonaise and 5% whatever food-color it was supposed to be. - The fries were soggy - The milkshakes should be called 'frothed milk in a warm glass' - The burger was clearly of the freezer-to-the-griddle pre-formed patty variety with wilted iceberg lettuce and mealy tomatoes on top. - Avoid any 'Italian' dish like the plague - unless you like Hunt's Tomato Sauce (ingredients: Blended tomatoes, water, salt) and imitation cheeses (fake Mozzarella? Really?). I wanted to like it - I live a few blocks away and, in general, enjoy diner fare. I usually trust Yelp but in this instance I was led very much astray. After reading the stellar reviews for this place on Yelp, I decided to check it out one weekend. Since it was after 2, the brunch rush was over and we conveniently got a big booth, despite signs that it was reserved for parties larger than two. We decided to start with milkshakes and no sooner did we place our drink order, at least 4 servers came over asking if we were ready to order. We barely had a chance to sift through the menu which was several pages long with typical diner fare. Finally we were able to figure out what we wanted - my boyfriend went with a monte christo sandwich, I went with a pastrami sandwich which had pastrami, swiss cheese and sauerkraut. My sandwich came with fries, pickles and cole slaw. First the milkshakes came out and ours were two completely different consistencies. Mine was a thick chocolate shake, while the boyfriend's tasted like strawberry milk, rather than a milkshake. While I was complaining of an ice headache while drinking it, he was able to down his so quickly because it was so thin. After he finished it, he still said the milkshake did nothing to satisfy any ice cream craving. While I'm not a milkshake expert, the amount seemed pretty small for what we paid. I know typically other restaurants bring over a big silver cup that has extra shake so you can refill your milkshake glass, but we just got one serving at 3 Decker. Next came our meals. Here I was expecting a nice sandwich, when instead, all I got was a hunk of pastrami on two pieces of bread, with sauerkraut and swiss cheese dumped on top. No where on the menu did this say it was an open face sandwich and the little photos on the menu looked like the sandwich was indeed, a sandwich. Both of our sandwiches were infact open faced, and it was like all the good part of the sandwich was tossed in the middle - i.e. the sauerkraut, cheese was just in the middle, with all the extra pastrami on the side. So I dove into the middle of the sandwich, with my knife and fork of course, and ate it. However, approximately a half hour after eating the sandwich, we both immediately felt worse and didn't eat too much the rest of the night- in my own words, I may have said that it felt like I was birthing a small pig. As far as the fries that went with the sandwich - definitely undersalted and a little bland. 3 Decker is mediocre diner food at best. I'm not sure why there are such rave reviews out there. I understand that for breakfast it is cheap, but for what we paid for two sandwiches and two milkshakes, it was quite expensive with the bill coming to $30. I'd much rather save our money and go somewhere else for better, cheap food. I don't expect I'll be returning anytime soon. read more
