This place used to be my go to greasy spoon diner. It had such a great vibe, old school counter service from some of the nicest most overworked servers you'd ever meet. The food was great, they had an extensive menu that was made fresh to order. I came back recently after the remodel. Usually when a place gets renovated it takes off and gets a new life. Not the skillet, they sucked all the charm away and made it look like a cross between Chipotle and and Applebee's. This wouldn't have been a big deal, but why mess with the food?!!! This place has been around for years and always had good food at fair prices. The place is like microwave city now. read more

OUTSTANDING! I love this place so much! I crave it constantly, and any time I can plan a run to hit Sacramento around a break, I do. This place never disappoints. In addition to being delicious, the portions are large, and the prices are reasonable. Though I am a creature of habit, and so far have only ordered a bacon cheeseburger (they don't sell this as such, but I have customized other burgers to become this), I have sampled bites of my traveling companions' meals, and have also had their fresh-made chips and salsa. Everything is delicious. Even cold later, every bite is delicious. My only complaint is the location. The sole Silver Skillet is fixed within the iron gates of a huge, expensive, and over-rated Pilot Truck Stop. You have to either pay to park there, or buy 75 gallons of fuel (25 more than most truck stops) at the obscene California fuel price. I sure wish Silver Skillet would either move (to a trucker friendly location!), or expand to have other locations. I swear I would eat there regularly! As it is, we can only eat here when all the stars align, but we're constantly willing to put up with the nonsense of the Pilot in order to eat here, so it must be good! read more

The Skillet is under a face lift so the good old truck stop will look different but the waiters and cooks will still remain. This is a classic truck stop and you will always find a couple of truckers. Talking to a trucker from Mississippi that has been all over the nation. My waitress Korean has been here for 22 years. She says she loves her job and is about to go on a cruse. I had a 49er omelette and it was great . Little slow on the coffee refills but all in all was pretty good. Because this little gem is yet another of one of those such aforementioned places that a certain ex was "suppose" to take me to and failed. Not that I'm surprised....the closeted exes are the worst kind. Drunks do a great job in escaping responsibility. The mentally disturbed think virtual ghosts do your dating for you on OkCupid. Drugs do a great job in clouding the conscience. Trust me on this one. So regarding this matter, took it upon myself to try out this diner-like grease spoon which is located in a truck stop off the 80 heading toward Tahoe. Wide, expansive, and with a parking lot fit to serve the numerous big rigs pulling off to fill-up. A convenience store is attached to the right, veer to the left for seating, and don't worry about late night scuffles, soliciting lot lizards or enacting drug deals in the parking lot. That won't take place with the numerous CHP pulling in and out like flies on rice. Even my minority arse felt safe here. Open 24 hours a day, one cannot go wrong with any of the big man appetite breakfast menu items, including the one pound Corned Beef Hash plate. Granted the stuff must come from a can, but I have secretly been a fan of the Libby brand. The hash browns are done right and the slices of toast thick on the cut and thick on the butter. The burger is mediocre, however. I likened it to something from the Fast Food track.....no personality at all. It was a frozen patty, with a typical seeded bun. Served with a sad portion of typical french fries. At the very least, the french fries could have pulled some weight. Needless to say, I would never order their burgers again. Instead, stick with the larger breakfast plates. 1 pound of corned beef hash. The Lumberjack deal of four slices of bacon, sausages, eggs and toast. Or the all-you-can-eat Biscuits and Gravy. Chuck the term "organic" at the door and unbuckle the belt holding up your pants. Sit near the windows, eat, and ponder as the world rolls by. Don't get fancy. Be simple. The target clientele know how to order here so watch and learn......perhaps like a mature and mentally-stable adult. read more

This place is first and foremost a truck stop - it's patronage a sea of plaid shirts and jeans, long beards and aged ball caps. Just walking into the dining area is an experience to behold. Ceramic chickens adorn shelves near NASCAR memorabilia. Pictures of a thousand truckers and their dogs adorn yet another wall. A highly detailed painting of racing victory detracts from the four 20" old school tv's blaring Fox News in the dining area. It's a trucker's dream. I have fond memories of this place. I've been here on several occasions, each preceded by jubilant calls throughout the office for a 'healthy lunch'. We'd regale each other the entire way there with tales about calorie counts, workout balls, sweat-suits and granola. It was quite hilarious at the time. As others mention - this place isn't for the faint of heart. You're not coming here to find lite mayo or diet colas, you're coming here for a coronary. Every time I've visited this place, it hasn't let me down. I always left stuffed beyond belief, clutching my chest in anticipation of the inevitable seizure of my vital organs as they process vast gobs of fried goodness. It was absolute heaven. On a whim and a prayer, I decided to take my boy to experience the sheer awesome that is a complete disregard for healthy eating. He seemed to enjoy the people-watching as much as I did. Things started out well - I sat down, arranged my silverware (clearly circa 1950-ish) and waited to order death on a plate. Just another meal at the Silver Skillet. Sadly, I waited, and waited, and waited, until finally I was approached by the blue-haired waitress. She brought some crayons for the boy and off she went, leaving us to wait about 20 minutes before taking our order. The food arrived in reasonable time, but I couldn't help but think that I was eating left overs - not from the takeout box later that night, but direct from the kitchen. The mashed potatoes were stone cold, and the gravy was lackluster at best. I found this surprising, because each time before it seemed that some care was taken in preparing things fresh. The nostalgia of the place is the only reason I'm not rating it one star. The elderly waitress that served me was inattentive and forgetful, and completely unworthy of a tip. 20 minutes after my meal was finished, I was still being ignored. I actually went into the vacant wait staff area to retrieve a box for my son's left overs, as she was completely unable to hear my repeated calls for her attention. Thanks old waitress lady! It'll be some time before I get my health-food fix from the Silver Skillet Restaurant again. It's 2 a.m. and I'm hungry ... again. My husband mentions something about a diner nearby and I'm up and running out the door. We get there and give our order to the waitress ... the one with the smoker's voice and bloodshot eyes --- the one that calls me "Baby." I start to like this place a lot at this point. We ordered the fried chicken plate with mashed potatoes and gravy, a denver omelette thing and a side of biscuits and gravy. We were sadly disappointed with ALL of it. Well ... except for the lemonade ... that was icy and tart ... kinda like me. I like me. The fried chicken was soggy, the mashed potatoes were WRONG --- like past the expiration date wrong. The side of biscuits and gravy was crap though it probably didn't help that the day before I had the best biscuits and gravy over at Evan's Kitchen. The omelette sat on my plate ... lonely after I took one bite and left it. So why the four stars? We decided to give it another try. This time 3:30 a.m. cravings for chicken fried steak lured us out of our warm apartment and into the cold. We ordered: Garlic Fries - seriously the best garlic fries I've ever had. The shoestring fries were perfectly crispy on the outside and mealy on the inside, the garlic was minced very very finely and were golden. I don't know if it's a fluke, I'm almost afraid to order them again for fear they won't be as good as this time! Chicken Fried Steak & Eggs, scrambled and smothered in country gravy, extra side of hash browns. So good, so good. Country Fried Steak & Eggs, eggs over easy, smothered in country gravy. Atmosphere: 5 stars Disclaimer: I've loved eating at truck stops since I was a kid. It's always felt like truck stops were my window into the world of long-haul truckers. I knew a number of such fellows when I was growing up. They were usually friends of my parents from church. I'd hear stories of their long drives on empty roads in the middle of the night. They're typically active when the rest of us are sleeping. The Silver Skillet lived up to my expectations. When the waitress got something slightly wrong on an order, the trucker replied, "That ain't nothing to worry about." Seeing him treat the waitress kindly though she'd made a mistake really made my day. Cost: 4 stars My total before the tip was $8.69 with tax. Not bad. There are plenty of places that provide the same sort of food at a higher price with less atmosphere. I'm now a fan of the Silver Skillet. I got the wet burrito but the chicken pot pies look absolutely amazing. I was just really feeing sole Mexican food right now and the burrito is the size of my arm. If you are a driver the parking for 24 hours is $15 bucks unless you spend $50 bucks inside the store and show them your recipes.. But not a bad little spot especially because there is hardly anywhere to park in Sacramento. The service is pretty quick also and the servers are really nice. I'm a fan of the Silver Skillet for one main reason only: Mama. She's the beautiful 70-something waitress who has worked there forever and always treats "occasional regulars" like myself like family. She's super sweet and has stories til the dogs come home. OK, so that's not the saying. I'm living in LA now and I'm not awake yet. No one here wakes up entirely until noon or so. The food is exactly what you'd think -- truck stop fare. Country fried steak. Towering plates of fries, gravy on everything, fried chicken, and, for modern eaters, things like taco salad. But if you need to eat at 2 in the morning and are tired of the hip places in Midtown that stay open late definitely try this. The food is good. Grandma good. I first started coming here five years ago with my BF and loved the way all the waitresses called him "Honey" or "Darlin'." He's a dessert guy and the Silver Skillet waitresses don't disappoint. I'll never forget the first time one of them brought him a piece of pie buried in mounds of ice cream and a super high swirl of whipped cream. It was a towering sight to behold and when the plus-sized waitress delivered it, she said, "You won't get no dessert like this from a skinny bitch waitress, honey." OMG... Has anyone been here since the remodel? All the staff has been let go and there's no table service. You got to walk up and order at a counter and pay for it then they will bring you your food. If I wanted fast food I would've gone elsewhere. There were only two people on a Saturday morning in this restaurant. It was so quiet You can hear a pin drop. I remember when it was the silver skillet snd it was packed every weekend morning. People worked there for years and years and you'd always see the same folks.We won't be back. We got up and went to Black Bear down the street so we could have some table service. It's a real shame the way they changed that place. I wish them well but I don't see how they can pay for those renovations with no people going to the restaurant. read more

The food was just ehh. It's a 24 hr diner which is great for those occasions where you need to go get something to eat but nothing else is open. This place is right off the freeway and is a convenient place to stop for truckers or those on long road trips but I probably would not come here if I have other options. I ordered eggs benedict and was rather disappointed. The eggs were not poached correctly and the hash browns were not crispy enough for my taste. However, the country fried steak was actually pretty tasty and the staff seemed friendly. I saw that they had sweet potato fries and wanted to order that but was disappointed when the waitress told me that they didn't have any. read more

I'm a fan of 24 hour truck stop diner food. It ain't supposed to be good, or even particularly tasty. It's usually inexpensive, it's usually filling to the point of sitting in your stomach for hours, making you wish you'd never eaten there, but you always come back because it's predictable, and it's comforting. The coffee is hit or miss, depending on how early (or late) you get there, but it's still always drinkable with enough creamer. The waitresses (and they're usually women) are either jarringly-ebullient in their youthful cheerfulness (gross), or sassy and snarky and no nonsense in their old age (yay!). There's not a lot of range from truck stop to truck stop. It's greasy food that makes you hate yourself for loving it. Silver Skillet exceeded my (low) expectations. The food was surprisingly good, the coffee was great (we either beat or missed the early breakfast crowd, as we had the place virtually to ourselves, so I think we got a fresh pot of coffee pretty much to ourselves), and with the yelp discount, breakfast was cheap even after the hefty tip in appreciation for the grandmotherly waitress with the gravely voice who walked us through the menu with good humor, patience and grace, and worked her magic to get us the best deal possible on what we ordered. Best of all, the food didn't sit in our stomachs all day. Rather than regret the decision to eat here, I was quite happy with my experience hours after. Would I eat here at night? Oh sure, but I'd still only have whatever's on the breakfast menu. That's the joy of truck stop diners. If you want fancy food with fancy names and an air of class, avoid the disappointment and go somewhere else and pay triple, or be smart and stick with the breakfast menu. You know what you are getting, it won't be a shock, and at least with the Silver Skillet, it actually ain't half bad. I definitely hope to visit this place again next time I'm in the Sacramento/Roseville area. read more

This place is awesome drunk food. It's big, delicious and has enough butter to make Paula Dean swoon. The theme is mining, and the gold rush plate with chicken fried steak and country potatoes with onion and bell peppers feels like a gold miners dream come true. Excellent trucker food for the prices! I recently tried the place across the street from here and was sorely disappointed, it made me appreciate how much better the food is here. First off the service here is excellent! these gals have been working here for years, and are pros at servicing your table. A lot of times I come here late at night and Kris is always awesome! They make their gravies from scratch most of their sauces and they actually have a barbecue pit that they actually smoke their own meats in for some of their items like their ribs, tri-tip, etc. and it's really really good! You get a huge rack of ribs for the money! Burgers are great, open-faced turkey and roast beef sandwiches are awesome and the gravy is equally as good, chicken fried steak is good, so are the omelets and dinner specials (except for the spaghetti- bland). Give it a try and more importantly they are open around the clock. Imagine that: a real cooked meal at 2 am on a Wednesday! read more

Finally got brave enough to try this place. I've seen it on the way to work for the last 2 years and have been hesitant to try it because it looked so shady and there are ALWAYS homeless people and hitch hikers hanging out at this truck stop... Well I saw it on Groupon and thought "why not"- I'm like 5 minutes from home and if I get sick on the food I can easily drag myself back to the comforts of my own bathroomy... The food was surprisingly pretty good. Definitely not the best, but the price was right and the atmosphere was very chill. The service was pretty slow, but this didn't seem like the type of place you'd want to eat if you were in a hurry any way. This place was like a time warp and it seemed like one of those old fashioned coffee shops my parents would take me too when I was a little kid (back in the 80's). I ordered the roast beef dinner- for like $11 you get a heaping pile of meat, choice of potato, veggie, soup or salad, and a dinner roll or garlic bread. Well- minus 1 star because the waitress forgot my soup, but I had so much food it wasn't even missed. The veggie of the day was corn and had obviously come from a frozen bag, but the beef and gravy was pretty darn good. I definitely would like this place for breakfast or late night and I think its way better than Denny's or IHOP. The best thing about this place is we ate during dinner rush AND THERE WERE NO SCREAMING CHILDREN! Hooray! I love breakfast and I love getting breakfast at diners, but I have a problem with getting up early enough to get breakfast, so I was pleasantly surprised to find a truck stop diner serving breakfast 24 hours a day when I pulled off the freeway to get some gas. I ordered the yankee pot roast with two eggs and the boy had the country scramble. The country scramble is eggs covered in gravy. Let that sink in a moment... Maybe I just showed up on a bad day but I can not believe all the positive reviews this place got. We were seated and got our drinks fairly quickly. Unfortunately, that's the only thing that was quick. She still bring me a sample of the soup of the day, which was nice. My friend's baby spilled water and we had to ask for napkins. 10 minutes later we've finally got them. We sat and waited for our waitress for a good 5 to 10 minutes. We were one of three tables in the entire restaurant so she was not busy and she seemed to have plenty of time to chat with her friends at another table. I asked if their chili had tomatoes in it and she just said "I don't think so". No offer to go find out. So I ordered the 5 cheese grilled cheese with salad (no tomatoes) instead of fries. I'm not sure where the 5 cheese came from, there was only 2 kinds on it. The bacon was cooked just enough that you couldn't call it raw and the edge of the bread was soggy. The salad came a few minutes later with tomatoes and so much dressing it was difficult to eat. Maybe I'll give this place another try but not for a long, long time. read more

Opens late! We were staying in the nearby Fairfield hotel and got hungry after swimming. It was around 9:30-ish (we know we probably shouldn't eat that late, but screw that) and we don't feel like driving too far just for food. I yelped around and found this place. Reviews are good (mostly) and it's VERY close to the hotel, so why not check it out.. ;D Place looks a bit ghetto from outside cuz it's a truck stop.. with some other random cars. Dunno whom those cars belong to, cuz it wasn't crowded when we came (it was pass the dinner time). But anyway.. we were ordering for to-go, but got seated and given water anyway. Service was a bit slow, but the staff were very nice. I'm taking one star out because I ordered crispy chicken sandwich with garlic fries but they gave me regular fries and still charged me extra for garlic fries. I just realized it when I got back to my room and opened the food container (I make sure to check my to-go orders at the restaurant from then on). The food is good and portion is huge, though.. so whatever. Sister ordered "the Gold Strike" (I carried her food to our hotel room and it was HEAVY.) She couldn't finish it that night and had to eat it again the next morning (oh well.. it's better than Marriot's continental breakfast, so I guess it's a win-win situation for her :P) So the bottom line is... strategic location, good service, good food, good price, huge portion. And with that being said, we will definitely be back if we're in the area. :) PS: idk if they still do it or not now, but when we went there there was a note saying that they will gladly change your oil while you're dining (or something like that) for FREE. We in Natomas claim the silver skillet proudly. It's one of our hidden gems and we refer people to this place with sentiments like, "trust me, it's awesome!" Atmosphere: For real though, it's at a truck stop. Nothing fancy here, but there's always awesome people watching and it's kept up. Ambience: A dive diner, but I've never had floaties in the water or dirty silverware. It's clean :) Food/drink: This is where we proudly say, "The food is awesome and cheap!" They make an awesome Monte Cristo (yes, a truck stop diner makes a mean Monte Cristo!!) and chicken fried steak. The menu is huge, so the chance of you finding something you want is likely, and I'm sure that will be good, too. Service: They are open 24/7, so there has definitely been times at 2am when we've convinced half a bar to come out. They are always welcoming no matter what time and service has been good. It was seriously the saltiest food I've ever been served in my life. The country potatoes that came with it were just as salty. It seriously tasted like a whole shaker worth of salt just on my plate. My bacon was also salted. WTF?! Seriously? I think bacon is salty enough as it is. Someone else ordered eggs over easy and they were also salted, not to the extent but not necessary. It was 3am Saturday morning - after a crazy night of dancing, and bar hopping,... me and my girls turned into a mob of HUNGRY, INTOXICATED, STRANDED, HOT (due to the temp that night) MAMAS- And then we entered the Silver Skillet- This place hit the SPOT.. I had ordered an avocado burger on Rye toasted... AND HOT DAYUM!!! It was PERFECT... I felt like fat bastard on GOOD DAY- (i mean this with love) to top it off it was my sister's birthday, and our Waitress CHRIS HOOKED IT UP with an OREO COOKIE CREAM PIE... we were all in PIE HEAVEN- YUMMY GOODNESS ALL DOWN our mouths!!! lol!! I get that this is a truck stop, but our drivers deserve a nice CLEAN restaurant to drive into and eat. This restaurant is old, but it doesn't have to look that way. The food is not too good and the servers are a bit on the slow side, all together I give it 1 star!! Remodel, paint, maybe clean and don't look at the kitchen floor. read more

This was a great experience. Early morning, and Korena was our waitress. The food is great. Hash browns are not salted at all, which is great. You can add salt, but you can't take it out. :) I like strong coffee. The house coffee is not strong, so if you like strong coffee, tell them. They will make a strong pot! This is a great truck stop breakfast house. Open 24 hours. Clientele is farmers and truckers, and they come back just about every day. This tells you something. I had the breakfast special: over easy eggs, hash browns, sausage patty, and all the pancakes I could eat, for $6.99. All done perfectly.
