This was my first of what is sure to be many visits. Tucked away inside the San Diego Beer & Wine Market on the corner of Broadway and 26th in Golden Hills, this little joint is a hidden jewel. There is indoor and outdoor seating, both with beautiful wood tables and benches. I sat outside - great people-watching as neighbors walked their dogs, walked in couples, strolled in the sun alone. Lots of smiles, too. And the food! I ordered the Pad Thai with shrimp, per the recommendation of the server (whose name I have forgotten, mea culpa) AND the chef, who is from Thailand. I also had the Thai Iced Tea (sans boba, but they do offer with). The food was amazing. Delicious. Just what it should be. I especially liked the....well, I don't know what they were. They give you an option of rice or veggie for your side. Just want to point out that this does not mean it is extra vegetables from the dish's recipe. This is a separate side of steamed vegetables. Delicious! Found this on yelp so decided to drive 25 minutes to check it out and glad we did. Very yummy Thai food and the prices are so reasonable! I totally get why it has 5 stars. My husband got the curry special and I got the pad Thai. Both were sooo good, highly recommend! Also, the customer service is top notch. While we were eating the couple next to us got up and left (or so we thought - they were getting a drink at the market) so the employee threw their half eaten food away. I'm confused, why are the carrots, broccoli, and cooked and then tossed into a cold salad? I know the owner would not be proud of these dishes. I have enjoyed a variety of dishes from Thai 55 over the last couple of years and promoted it to friends. I food has been delicious and memorable but the last 2 times I've went unfortunately I was disappointed in the flavor. It is apparent when food is prepared carelessly from the veggie prep to the presentation and spice haphazardly tossed onto the diss. Undecided whether I will give this place another try. Update April 19' My friend suggested Thai 55 again this evening and I was hesitant considering my previous two experiences. I had enjoyed this restaurant and service in the past. I was very disappointed with the meal again for the 3rd time in a row I believe there is a 2nd location in PB that is open ending up and I don't know if the same people are not here or what if the quality control has fallen off but this dish is embarrassing. It definitely is a wonderful hidden gem! I really do hope they expand and have their own building rather than being inside in the back of a liquor store; they at least deserve that much for how delicious the food is! Parking wasn't a big hassle as I easily found a spot but I assume it was because I came at an arbitrary time. When I walked inside the mini restaurant there wasn't that many people, only a couple eating their meal and myself. Seating wise there was only around 3 tables and a booth, so not too much but it definitely had that cozy vibe to it despite again being in the back of a liquor store. The cashier was really nice and quickly took my order of pad thai with chicken. When I got my receipt I noticed I was order #2, and the couple eating I assume was #1, so they didn't have a lot of business at that time when I arrived (1:00pm on a Tuesday). Wait time was fairly quick since it was only me and shortly after fiddling with my phone for a couple minutes I got my bag with my meal in a nice styrofoam box. Taste wise it was delicious! Portions are pretty good for what you pay for and after eating it all I wasn't overstuffed or hungry but perfectly satisfied. I will definitely come back for more if I'm in the downtown area again and I'm very happy to have found this hidden gem that was conveniently close by after I finished doing color corrections to my hair. Let me begin with this is not your typical Thai food. It's more like a fusion and I walked in knowing that. Oh, by the way, the place is hidden in the back of a local convenience store, which I really like because hidden joints tend to be hidden gems. I crossed my fingers hoping to find a delicious Thai spot, but wasn't taken back when I got my food. I ordered a couple of my favorites: Drunken Noodles with Beef and Yellow Curry with Tofu. We'll start with the Drunken Noodles. The noodles were not wide rice noodles. Instead, the noodles are more like Pad Thai noodles; long and skinny. I'm all for experimenting, but these noodles didn't have the ability to deliver on bold, spicy flavor. Plus, the noodles dried out quickly. The highlight the Drunken Noodles was the beef! The beef was tender and had fantastic flavor! I'd recommend getting beef with any of 55 Thai's dishes. Next up, the Yellow Curry. I could smell the exotic scents of India before laying eyes on the curry, even my roommate thought it was Indian food! I love Indian food, but I wish the curry was more, well, curry. 55 Thai's curry was thick and lacked the sweetness of coconut milk. It was good for Indian food standards. Plus, you got to choose between white, brown, and veggies for your base, which was a nice gesture. So if you are looking for Thai Thai food, then I'd hit up another joint. I've been to most Thai restaurants in all of San Diego and this is by far one of the worst one I've ever had. I'm a huge sucker for Thai food and based on the reviews that I read about this place I felt confident that this was going to match up to Bahn Thai but was left disappointed. First of all, who uses jalapenos instead of Thai chilis in Thai cuisine? I also didn't see any Asian staff/cook because they were predominantly Latinos. I don't know if people who have eaten here have had real Thai food before but this is not up to par. I got the Pad Thai, yellow curry with shrimp and a small side of Tom Kha soup. They are pretty generous with their serving which I gave another star but they don't let you choose your spice level which I'm not used to because I love spicy food. The pad thai was very bland and I thought it was gonna be flavorful because of its bright orange color but I guess you can't let appearances fool you. The yellow curry was way too salty for my liking and it almost tasted like Chinese curry. Yelp did not steer me wrong here! I was slightly skeptical of a Thai place in a Liquor store but after one bite I was in heaven. We ordered our dinner online and went to pick it up. The staff was very pleasant. One worry I had was that the spice level was not asked during ordering but to my surprise my Chicken Pad Thai was perfect. It was spicy without being painful. The Pad Thai was cooked perfectly. I loved it. My Thai Tea was also wonderful and not overly sweet. My husband's Thai Green Curry was exceptional and the smell was intoxicating. I love drunken noodles and I know how they are suppose to taste and unfortunately 55 Thai Kitchen has not mastered it. (If you ever want me to come be a taster, please let me know) However, the Tom Kha soup is yum! BUT I ordered from DoorDash and they didn't put a fork or any spicy sauce. My soup has noddles in it so it was very hard to eat. Just a tip: if someone is ordering Thai food, they probably want something spicy, good idea to add this as a normal practice or make this an option on door dash. Another perfect rating in Golden Hill. This neighborhood is becoming an affordable "Real San Diego" foodie hot spot and it makes me happy. :-) Bottom line: best Thai I've had. Replaced the 26th kitchen and carry that was here before, which was also a great place to eat. That said, with great options for sandwiches like Giorgino's just around the corner, I'm much more excited to have amazing Thai food in the neighborhood. They've got a relatively small menu and hardworking team making real, crafty food with super fresh produce, homemade flavors, all at Golden Hill prices. They should keep this going. We've stopped by for carryout twice in the last week. So far, we've tried: - The Tom Yum soup. This might be my favorite thing so far (but everything is good). Spicy, loaded with flavor, and just $3.5 for a huge, hot, 16 oz portion. It's a meal by itself. I add the red chili paste to it and order with veggies. Spiiicy! Unreal. - Boba Thai iced tea. Literally the best boba I've had; stronger and more flavorful. Spoiled on it now and I hope they offer more hours for me to skip Starbucks for it. $3.5 - Pad Thai. Sweeter than normal, not peanut-y but lots of flavor and the chicken they use is tasty. Big portion. Solid, but not my top pick. $8 - Green curry: knockout. Better than any I've had before and loaded with flavor. Big portion as well and served with rice of your choice or veggies. $8 The condiments by the register are :100:. Peppers are tasty and I throw them on everything. Get a couple. The chili paste is extra hot but flavorful - I wish I could use more. The other stuff (peppers and sauce of some kind?) is amazing. So glad this place exists in my neighborhood; we'll be here often. They're definitely doing business, and it's been busy both times I went in with lots of people coming and going. I suggest calling ahead if you get it to go. Street parking on this block is good if you have to drive: Broadway down past the market has street spots open almost always and they have 30 min parking right in front that's usually doable. Even if you park a block away, it's well worth it! There are 3 tables inside if you're making a trek out and want to eat in, and it's worth it. Well, pretty disappointing, ordered pad thai chicken spicy 3 , it was flavorless, literally eating bland noodles, absolutely no spice. At first, it may sound corny; however, to be totally honest, please don't overlook this amazing Thai restaurant with its wonderfully authentic home-made tasting menus. More importantly, the customer service was outstanding - quick & friendly with a beautiful smile. Most importantly, the price of the menus seemed to be reasonably fair, not too pricey at all. Kudos! I rarely give two stars... but this is definitely a two star restaurant with me being very generous. Food (2/5) Thai Yellow Curry (1/5): This is my usual go to entree at a Thai restaurant. The curry was so thin, I felt like I was drinking soup. The "spice" that they add into the curry is simply red pepper flakes. I ordered a Thai yellow curry, yet they gave me a vegetable curry and forgot my rice. Beyond that, there were half chunks of potatoes that were not fully cooked in there. Is it that hard to cut it into little cubes?! You mean I need a knife to eat curry?! WORST curry I ever had. Pad Thai (0/5): We ordered Pad Thai without eggs. However, it was loaded with eggs. My vegan friend spat that out with a quickness. I believe this gave her PTSD. When I tried it, it was next level sour. I simply gave this restaurant two stars instead of one because maybe this was just a bad day for them, or maybe I need to experience dining in instead of dining out. If you like Thai food this is a hidden gem in the Golden Hill area. Located in a nondescript mini mart, the menu is simple and the food service is fast. The food is served in single serving cardboard bowls. The Pad Thai noodles is flavorful and you can get different types of meat in it. The green curry sauce is sweeter than the yellow curry sauce. There are 3 tables in this "restaurant": table for 2, table for 4, and table for 6. If the tables are full, you can either just take the food to go or just wait for an opening. Had the Massaman Curry with white rice, dine in. Rice served on styrofoam plates and curry served in large recyclable paper cups. Food is hot and flavorful. There are three tables to sit at, two small two seaters, and one large wooden bench that can seat 4-6 guests at once. Had the Thai Iced Tea. It was very sweet and flavorful. Water was from the tap served in a plastic to go cup with no ice. Overall this is a great place for a quick bite (seeing as it was continuously busy after 9pm). In addition to having an unhelpful and terrible attitude, the girl on the phone was like thats, "all i can do for you." Hmmm if I had a restaurant and ran out of chicken, the most used meat in a restaurant, I wouldn't charge a customer extra because I didn't order enough product. I was willing to keep an open mind that maybe something else made me sick, but my friend had the same experience after she went there on a different day. Decided to dine in for our second visit, first time we went was on a busy Friday night. NEW FAVORITE THAI SPOT! Good size portions, flavorful, and you can tell the food is made with love! Also I love that it's inside a liquor store. We had veggie tofu pad Thai, chicken beef drunken noodles, and chicken ginger stir fry. We chatted with the owner for a bit. He mentioned they're opening another location in downtown and that they're adding more items to the menu at this location. Really affordable spot with amazing Thai tea!! The veggie egg rolls are really delicious and what I love is that the Pad Thai isn't so heavy to the point where I feel gross. Pad Thai can be such a heavy meal because of all the spice that I feel so sleepy afterwards but this place has a good blend of Pad Thai to chicken and veggie ratio.
