Hesitant at first since it's hard to find in a convenience store. What a 'hole in the wall' should be like. 10 menu items that are perfected and friendly service. We ordered the green curry with brown rice and veggies, chicken pad Thai, and chicken drunken noodle. Didn't care for the drunken, too salty and I prefer wide noodles instead of thin. Geeen curry was excellent. Pad Thai was the best I've ever had, and over the past 15 years I've eaten 100's of pad Thai noodles across the states. Mostly in San Diego though. Have to ask for peanuts but they're amazing fresh roasted and crushed. Would definitely come back! read more

Thai food is my absolute favorite and ive had some spectacular dishes all over the world. I get that my standards are high but there are some stateside restaurants that really come close to perfection. This isn't one of them. We had 4 different dishes: green curry-' the sauce was nice and had the depth of flavors you expect but my only complaint with this dish is that they serve it to you already poured over the rice. The rice soaked up all the sauce. The yellow curry tasted like it came from a ready made packet you get in the stores. This dish was 75% rice. The fried rice and the pad thai were decent. read more

We finally tried this place and I am so happy it's so close to our house!! We got a beef pad Thai and a shrimp yellow curry and both were amazing. I never get beef anything at Thai restaurants but the pictures looked so good, I had to try it. It was seriously one of the best things I've ever eaten, it was like a juicy steak that melted in your mouth. I was so sad when it was gone. The thai tea with boba was pretty good, not Kearny Mesa good but I'm happy to have boba closer to home. Can't wait to try everything in the menu! read more

Easily the best Thai food inside of a liquor store. And likely about the best Thai food in San Diego, period. Hidden inside the San Diego Beer & Wine Market lives a small restaurant. Just a few small tables and minimal decor. A pretty abbreviated menu. And delicious, affordable food. I've never been to Thailand, but I've eaten at ~50 Thai restaurants in my life, and 55 Thai Kitchen is definitely top 3. Portions are really big. Tom Yum soup had plenty of vibrant veggies and complex broth. Tom Kha soup was luxurious with fresh shrimp and coconut milk. The Tom Kha had a piece of onion that was a little undercooked, but it was still a great soup. Pad Thai was a solid dish and huge. Drunken noodles stole the show with bold and bright flavors and sliced chicken delicately spread across the top. Their beverage menu is very limited, but you can purchase something from the market and drink inside the restaurant area (but no beer or wine as they don't have their liquor license yet....or you can try your luck with a brown bag). I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone that likes great Thai food or a great value. read more

This place is hidden inside of a liquor store, there's about 3-4 tables, it's nice and small. The food came out very quickly, we got the yellow curry with chicken, and drunken noodles with beef. The yellow curry had great flavor and the vegetables we got on the side were very fresh but could have used some seasoning. The drunken noodles came with skinny noodles instead of the thick noodle which we did not really like but it was still good. Also, the Thai tea was one of the best we have tried. read more

This place is very good. Super authentic. The Pad Thai is a bit too sweet here, so I opt for the drunken noodles and it is oh so delicious!! The curries are amazing also. The Thai-iced tea is great. They have all the sauces out that they do in Thailand (except crushed peanuts). Super great and reasonable prices. The outdoor seating is cool. Do not let the fact that this place is inside of a corner liquor store fool or deter you: it's really really good. I live in Golden Hill and am so happy a friend recommended this place to me. My first thoughts were: "it's in a liquor store?! That sounds weird..." but he insisted it was what's up. It beats ANY of the otherThai spots I've had in San Diego in north park and university heights. It's super fresh and light and good. The chicken in the masaman curry dish is beautiful fall-off-the-bone white meat. Also, it's extremely clean and I love that it's open kitchen. The staff is very nice and pleasant as well; Especially the young guy who works the register most nights at the end of the night... he's the sweetest. read more

I'm so happy we have a Thai place in the neighborhood. It is delicious, with good portion sizes, and affordable. We got the Tom Kha noodles and the Yellow Curry. They both tasted fresh with vibrant flavors and we would definitely order again. I was a little nervous that it was located in the back of a liquor store, but they really decked it out and the vibe is very clean and modern with tables both inside and outside. The chef and staff were all extremely kind. I couldn't ask for a better place to have only a few blocks away. read more

Do not let the liquor store front deter you, the food is excellent, the service is great, prices are great too, and parking was no problem! I got the pad thai with chicken at a 7 spiciness level. We tried out this tiny hole-in-the-wall restaurant because of the 4.5 stars. The food did not disappoint. I ordered a Yellow Curry with Tofu and a Green Curry with Chicken. The Thai Basil in the green curry was flavorful and the curry was spiced just right for me. White rice on the side helped to cut the spice which helped my husband. The Yellow Curry came with brown rice that was cooked perfectly. I ordered to go, but should have called in the order and just gone to pick it up since the place is tiny and very warm with little parking outside. My order was ready pretty quickly and the place filled up while I was waiting, so it is obviously popular. We would definitely get take out from here again. Side note for first-timers: the place is located inside of a corner market which could be easy to miss but they do have a sign out front. read more

Best Tom Kha in all the land. Their steamed tofu is crazy good. I also enjoy their take on Tom Yum and Yellow Curry, but their drunken noodles are not my favorite. Ordered take out while visiting with family, and wished I lived nearby! Massaman chicken was fall off the bone tender, rich and peanuty with just a bit of kick. Drunken noodles with beef also very tasty. Yum salad with veggies fresh and bright with a nicely acidic dressing ... but my request for mild (what they called a "4") was still very potent. Wish they had some appetizers like spring rolls or fried tofu, and had the Chow Now link been working, would have used it the night we ordered. Price and value are outstanding. read more

My overall experience at the 55 Thai was wonderful. I went there three times and I enjoyed my meal pretty much. I am not from Thailand but I love the food there. The food made me miss my home. This restaurant is not far away from my school so it is convenient to eat there after class. Near the restaurant there is a bus station. There are many foods to choose. I once tried noodle and rice. Both of them were 8 dollars. It is really suitable for students and workers to have a try. The rice really tasted great with spicy 9. I love spicy food very much. The pepper was wonderful. However, the noodle was a little bit sour, which was just meh for me. Some people may like sour food. The waiters and waitress there were friendly and helpful. It was interesting to talk to them. What is more, it was comfortable to sit in the restaurant and had a meal quietly. Each time after meal I felt full and couldn't walk anymore. The food in this restaurant are worthy of recommendation. If you are hungry, just go to 55 Thai to have a beautiful meal. Oh, I can't help to slobber when think about the food there. read more

The building was built to be the local post office back in the 1930s, so that is how the mini-mart got to be in that building, it couldn't have been built there now. A very nice and welcome Thai restaurant, long overdue for Golden Hill, is in the back. I'm old enough to remember when there wasn't a single Thai eatery in the City of San Diego, your only choice was a place called Colosseum Pizza in National City who had a Thai chef who would cook things not on the Italian menu. This is fine Thai food in a pleasant setting (within an odd setting, within a great neighborhood), a very abbreviated menu, sort of the "In-and-Out Burger" of Thai food. Not elegant or private, but clean and with some decorating skill. The food does get a bit spicy for American taste. If you don't like much spice, order a "zero", not 1 or 2 (out of 10). Very glad to be able to grab a bit of Thai food without having to go to Hillcrest or Downtown. read more

I have lived in the neighborhood for 11 years & I am so excited to have an Asian restaurant at a walking distance. The food is placed in compostable material which is wonderful because stirafoam is still used at other places. I ordered Shrimp Pad Thai & it was tasty and some Tom Ka with Tofu so my boyfriend who is vegan can enjoy. They assured me it was vegan. They have a mission & I appreciate it. I would love to eat Thai at least once a week but I truthfully could not afford it - even at 55 Thai. I'll try it as often as I can. Thank you for the great service! read more

Such a great addition to golden hill, open late which is awesome. The last few times I've gone in for to-go they were about to close in 15 mins, but they took my order with a smile and no hesitation. The meat they serve with their food is great! Chicken is always juicy and the steak cooked to perfection. Love their drunken noodles and the Tom yum soooo good. The salad has a great tart dressing. Love the service love the food. The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is I just wish the menu was a little bigger. read more

Well 55 Thai has been open only for a short time now and I can see people "get it". Lucky that we are that LIVE CLOSE BY.:) I AM ALONG TIME RESIDENT OF BANGKOK and SD/speak Thai fluently and love Thai food This is pretty darn close to the real deal in Thai food. So far we have only gone for the Pad Thai ( very solid) but tonite I picked up some Khawneeow Mamoouang (Mango Sticky rice) for my daughter-deeelicious.. This is my favourite Thai restaurant. Everything we ordered was amazing! The yellow and green curry with chicken and veggies were our favorite, but the mamassam chicken curry is unique and delicious. The service is also great and the owner is so personable and really cares about his food. Definitely coming back 10/10 read more
