Painful when you sit down on the torn bits of vinyl stabbing you in the thighs. Unpleasant when the waitress acts like asking for water means she has to hike up a mountain to a well to get it. Outrageous when 10 minutes have gone by and she hasn't come back to take your order. Satisfying when you grab your purse and walk out the door to give someplace else your business. Comforting when you drive another 10 minutes to Sushi & Maki and enjoy their lovely atmosphere, quality dishes, and pleasant staff. Ditch this place before you even park the car. read more

First, the ambiance: the bare concrete floor is pretty off-putting. There are booths that are perpendicular to the belt, which has its good and bad points. Good is that you're in close proximity to the wares on the belt, but it's bad in that only the person(s) sitting closest to the belt can reach said wares. So, in a booth with a party of more than two, you're either going to be asking somebody to grab something off of the belt for you, or you'll be the person distributing the wares to the rest of the table who aren't right next to the belt. How's the sushi? Honestly, it's on the low side of average. The unagi is tough and lacks flavor. The crab nigiri uses fake crab. The fried crab in the spider roll was soggy, and the roll had a capsaicin-based hot sauce that seemed out of place. The fried calamari fared much better. The rainbow roll, like the rest of the sushi, LOOKED awesome, but didn't deliver in the flavor department. The rest of the "special" rolls were nothing noteworthy. The "smoke" salmon had no discernible smokiness. What was surprising was the quantity of sushi you get for the price (high quantity, low price).. You typically get four pieces per plate, and the rolls themselves are more generously-sized than you see at any competitor. For three of us, dinner came to $42. The value offered is what boosted Akira to 3 stars. If you're in the shopping center looking for food, it's a far better choice than Wendy's, but I wouldn't go out of my way to dine there. read more

Whomever said that it is better than Sushi Land had set the bar wrong. Sorry...The sushi on the belt was cold. We order Spider, Unagi, Vegas, Gozilla Rolls and The Chicken Katsu Don. The Rice on the sushi is not even Japanese rice. It is definitely a Chinese version of sushi. I really want to come back and try all the multiple rolls they have. Definitely a lot of creative names for different kinds of rolls. Friendly staff that were very accommodating and genuine. Finding good and quality Asian restaurants are a challenge in Happy Valley. Thankfully, conveyer sushi restaurants still exist and Akira Sushi delivers nothing short of efficiency and quality. I live in Damascus, so places such as Akira essentially is my backyard. I have been coming to this place for many years now, and there hasn't been one time where I was left dissatisfied. Let's talk about the food. For the price, it's worth it--you get what you pay for. Nothing extravagant and nothing gross. The fish tastes pretty fresh and soft. The cheaper plates, like green and yellow, offer an affordable dining experience if you're looking to eat something light or want something vegetarian. Delicacies including seaweed salad and even the "special of the day" (random sushi that is constantly cheap, always fried, and ALWAYS tastes good) can fill you up in three to four plates. However, a lot of the plates have been sitting up on the conveyer for a pretty long time (indicated by the condensation on the clear plastic covers) so be mindful if you're wanting hot and fresh food to just order from the waiters directly. Moving on to the staff, we have a roster of individuals that are friendly and most speak Chinese, which is a plus for my grandparents who can communicate more effectively with them. No complaints at all. For people who are in a rush and have a crave, you basically get in, eat, and then get the HELL out of there. It's quick. It's designed to be quick--and the staff delivers the efficiency. No small talk. No confusing menu! You grab and go, then pay, just like that. Akira Sushi is pretty good when you have a craving and live nowhere near Portland, where all the good and quality places are. This sushi spot scratches the sushi itch for a cheap price and quick service. If I'm in a rush and in the area I'll stop in and grab some nigiri off the belt line. However, they often leave tables un-bussed and messy so my main complaint would be it's a bit dirty sometimes during peak hours. Also during busy hours their readily available selection can be rather scarce. It's not the end of the world because you can also order directly from one or the servers in the dining area if needed. I wouldn't say it's great quality sushi but it's a guilty pleasure of mine when I need a quick bite. read more

I think this place got super popular and they can't keep up with the demand. They used to have lots of sushi options and everything was really fresh and hot. When we went today, there were barely any options for sushi, everything was room temperature and the wasabi was brown. They also deep fried the sesame balls and some of the sesame seeds ended up on my sons gyoza. The waitress was super rude and she seemed like she was panicking and in a rush. My husband and I wanted to try this new place even though some of the reviews weren't very kind. We were able to be seated and the first thing I noticed was that it has this wonderfully peaceful atmosphere. It was clean, all the sushi was fresh and marvelous! So much nicer than other conveyer belt service which we usually go to if we want to wait a half an hour, see how grossly dirty the sushi prep stations were and endure loud people and just a plain noisy atmosphere. There was a special going on but I'd rather pay more and have excellently prepared sushi and a PEACEFUL environment. I am definitely looking forward to going back very soon. I hope the owners do well but on the other hand if it gets really popular and busy I hope it doesn't turn into another fast food sushi place like Sushiland. One thing I have to say is the rice they use doesn't seem like a very good quality kind of rice. The grains seem smaller and the sushi pieces are slightly thinner than other places. read more

This is a spot that is having done-in sushi during COVID. The space is on the smaller size and while efforts have been made to socially distance it is not quite as far spaced as it should be. Outside of that the sushi was actually quite good but the service was not great. There were two waitresses that seemed to be flustered out of their minds. Orders outside of the conveyor belt took multiple requests and a lot of time. Not only was the service bad but I literally watched a small bit vomit in front of me. I called to place a take out order. The phone had terrible reception so it took a call back to get an order through. They didn't ask for my name at the end for the order so I had to tell them at pick up awkwardly "umm you didn't ask." During the call back to place the order the woman who took my call said she was very busy and was not friendly... I should have taken that as a sign not to place an order. They quoted 30 minutes and it took 55+ minutes for the order to be ready. While waiting inside, I heard them quote another phone order 30 minutes (I wish i could have told the customer don't do it!). The lobby was very full and not a lot of space to distance while waiting. Someone waiting even got his knee knocked by the busser cart swinging by. The service is completely terrible. Getting home and unpacking the food there is no consistency. The calamari and wontons were fried and cold. The rolls were falling apart and I am filled with regret at first look and bite. Grocery store sushi, Fred Meyer and Safeway has better sushi than this! The rolls are completely stuffed with rice and barely any fish. The quality of the fish is so low. Completely disappointed in my decision to try a new local spot. Not straying from my usual spot ever again. I'm not sure how this place has an average of 4 stars. read more

This place reminded me of back home on Oahu like a Japanese Sushi Restaurant name "Genki Sushi" and "KuruKuru Sushi." The customer service was excellent and I was surprised what type of Sushi they served because they had pretty much my favorites; such as the ikura, spicy tuna, massago, and ika. I only did take out order for my first time visit and they were quick. Next time I will definitely dine in. What I am looking forward to trying there next time is the sesame ball.
