We have been customers for as long as I can remember but a recent Saturday lunch visit turned us off. I expect slow and less than perfect service given the restaurant environment today but the food was terrible. The queso was so runny, we ordered it again thinking something was wrong with the first bowl, but the second bowl was consistently runny. A chicken fajita salad was a huge bowl of lettuce and maybe a half chicken breast of chicken with very runny ranch dressing. Even the salsa was runny. The broccoli was yellow. The list goes on. It was also very warm in the restaurant. Perhaps it's cost cutting, maybe a bad day, but it will be a while before we try again. read more

Went on Father's Day and thought we were in Amittyville Horror flick with all the flies around us and dirty floors, half-cleaned tables, etc. We couldn't enjoy our food with constant swatting of flies landing. When you walk in the first thing you see aside from the hostess is the window where all the chips are prepped to send out to tables and I saw the employee uncharted of that station munching on the product lol. Best tortillas I have found thus far. A little Tex-mex spot on the highway, you enter to see the tortillas being freshly prepared through a glass window, the aromas permeating the restaurant. The restaurant is very very casual and family friendly but worth it just for the melt-in-your-mouth doughy delicious flour tortillas. Every tome I go I develop I develop a tortilla binge disorder. The fajitas show up sizzling still on a clay pan and sizzle right into your melt-in-your-mouth tortilla for the fill punch. A plus was the chips and salsa. Everything was really good including their tortillas. I had their tortilla soup. Parking wasn't easy considering it's off a freeway. From ingredients to staff, everything was missing, except the price that is. The fajita was tough, the cheese enchiladas were inedible and the tortillas were cold. The service wasn't bad but the food was terrible. My husband and I both got the sour cream chicken enchilada plate and it was disgusting. The chicken had a spoiled taste to it and it made us sick. We've been regular customers at this location, it has been our go to place for sometime. But we will not be going back anytime soon, I'm assuming due to cut backs they changed some menu items. We usually order the same items, which is the queso, prickly pear drinks, nachos, and sizzling fajitas. I will say the service was great! They took our order immediately, but when they brought us our drinks we noticed it was different. They changed the syrup to the prickly pear margaritas, I actually asked the waitress and she mentioned it was a different vendor. The nachos were sad looking and didn't taste good. I ordered to go last night and was totally disappointed with food quality. I ordered beef fajitas for 2 and added a medium queso. My order was brought to me with stale, cold(yes,cold) tortillas. I informed the gentleman that delivered my food and he replaced with warm tortillas. When I unpacked food at home, the beans were 3/4 full in a small container, pico was not fresh and beef fajita was obviously prepared earlier in the day, was cold, flavorless and tough. I enjoyed the flour tortillas at the Alamo cafe. I loved seeing the process of making them through the window as you walk in. I enjoyed my meal, brisket tacos, with Boracho beans. Brisket was perfectly moist, needed a little Salt and pepper. I wish I could have tried other things on the menu as well. Went to 281 location about 330 so we would not catch them busy. Stood in the entryway for over 5 minutes with my handicapped mother-in-law and could not get anyone to seat us. No hostess was present and we finally just walked into the area where they make the tortillas. The employees there just stared at us until finally a waitress came by and said the hostess was coming. After another few minutes we just left. During that time, 2 customers came in for carryout orders but no one acknowledged us. I know the number of employees has shrunk recently just like the size of the chicken fried steak has over the decades but we still like to go to Alamo occasionally. We always order the Davy Dip Togo for as a movie snack or when we're craving chips and queso. It's queos, gauc, beef, and sour cream. We always order the large and it comes with a big bag of tortilla chips. The queso is thick and creamy. We've only tried the queso, so we can't speak for the rest of the food but I highly recommend! read more

They have cut the meat to the point that there is hardly any meat in it. I would prefer that they keep the standards even if there is an increase in the price. It has been literally years since I have been to Alamo Cafe, but today we had a birthday lunch out for a coworker. We got there early enough so the 9 of us could be seated soon and easily. Chips and salsa were set out as a pre-lunch appetizer. The salsa was definitely on the sweet side with no spice to it. I very much prefer it on the spicier side, so I used it on the chips more for the different texture. The waiter came out promptly and took out drink order. Those came out quickly, but I felt it took quite a bit of time for our food orders to make their way out. I ordered the #3 enchilada dinner, with Chipotle sauce covered chicken enchiladas. Looking at the dish, it looked like the sauce was thick and may have been on the enchiladas for a little while. Cutting into it and then eating, the chicken seemed on the dry side. The rice and beans were decent, but not enough to save the dish overall. Lunch out with co-workers always a thumbs up. Unfortunately, I cannot give the food the same positive review. read more

It was good -- the food was good. We had a really bad waiter unfortunately who took our drink order and never brought drinks (we ordered water). When he brought food before we had our drinks from him he asked if we wanted anything - we said water and he just laughed and said he left it at the bar. He just was not interested. Overcharged us on something that had to be fixed. It was like that the whole time. But -- those tortillas were great. We got the brisket quesadilla, queso and rice and beans. The Queso with the poblano pepper was not good. Super thick and not flavorful at all. I loved their regular queso and their salsa. We loved it and will go back. It pains me to write this BUT.... When I lived is SA I always went to Alamo Cafe. The fajitas for 2 were a staple for me and my bff. We went at least once a week. It has been a year since I dined at Alamo Cafe. Now that I was in town it was a no brainer, Alamo Cafe, combination fajitas for 2!!! The service was HORRIBLE! The initial start was ok. The waiter got our drinks and queso. Then our server vanished. Well, he did not completely disappear, he did drop the check very soon after our main course was served. Someone else even dropped off our food. I did see him tend to other tables just not mine. We never got our drinks refilled, He never asked if we wanted dessert, which we did. He never took any of the plates when we were finished (waiting to see if we could get dessert) I literally cut his tip down to a fraction of what I usually tip. I am bitter about this because Alamo Cafe was an experience and a tradition for me and my friend. We felt rushed and unwanted. And it is not like it was close to closing time. The waiter just didnt care. I literally took my business to another place, ordered dessert, had more friends join us, ordered drinks. We easily dropped $130.00 and tipped out other waiter $55.00. read more

I had not come to an Alamo Cafe in several years but went last week during lunch. The food is average at best. I ordered the Chicken Laredo and it was very salty, the beans that came with it were overly salted as well and had too much black pepper it overpowered everything. The one good thing about Alamo cafe is their flour tortillas- absolutely amazing. The service was good and all but unfortunately I don't think I'd come back if I had a choice. read more

I've always enjoyed the tortillas and nachos at Alamo Cafe, so I suggested it for dinner last night. We were started off with chips and salsa, which was actually pretty good. The chips were fresh and the salsa had a good flavor with a slight kick at the end. I went with my usual, the half order of beef fajita panchos. They were as good as usual- the chips that they were served on were crispy and not soggy. The meat was tender with great flavor, and I absolutely love their melted cheese for some reason. It just tastes so creamy. My boyfriend was really disappointed with his food. He ordered the half order of beef quesadillas, 1 carne guisada taco, and 1 beef fajita burrito. He said both the quesadilla and taco were just okay, nothing special. Then the burrito came out covered in some sort of chili and he said that it was disgusting. He didn't even eat it. In the 4 years I've known him, I have never seen him find something that he dislikes so much that he won't eat. Dinner came with fresh, house-made flour tortillas which were great, but fresh flour tortillas always are. Overall, my food was good, but my boyfriend was not impressed at all. And realistically, I can find great fajita nachos in hundreds of places around San Antonio. I don't really see a reason to come back. read more

We skipped the chips, and went straight for the tortillas They were ridiculous. Best flour tortillas in San Antonio. The queso was very good too. We had a pitcher of margaritas. My parents love this place; it's near their home; they frequent it often for both Tex-Mex food and the occasional chicken fried steak. I used to go to Alamo Cafe when I was in high school ---we go way back. I live out of state and offered to have a meal delivered to my dad for his 78th birthday ---he wanted Alamo Cafe. I placed the order online (easy process) and chose one of the delivery service options. About an hour before the delivery was to be made I got a call from the restaurant manager, Greg Austin. He explained that the delivery services were unexpectedly not available & asked if we could curbside pick up instead. I explained that I didn't live there, but would try to see if my mom or sister could do pick up since they live close by. It only took Greg a few seconds to come back with an offer to personally deliver my dad's bday meal to their home. Amazing and heartfelt customer service --thank you, Greg! I wanted to love the place but couldn't give a 5 and barely a 4. The chips and salsa were good, the tortillas are made fresh, and the place is nice. I was told to try the chicken fried steak. It was mostly breading and the mashed potatoes were not very good at all. I may have just gotten the wrong thing but I would not get it again. The person I was had a bit better experience. I have been by this place a lot and it is always packed. It is a family place and the food is good, but not great.
