I was initially extremely disappointed because we put down our name early in the morning right after they opened for 7 people and they told us it will be a 40 min wait. We arrived there 20 minutes in. The attendant told us that the table they plan to give us, the people are still eating so it will be a while "it is more near than far" or something alike. Since we had time to kill, we went aound the corner and came back after ~ 20 -30 min only to see that they had given our table to someone else! Apparently they called out our name but in this day and age, they need to have at least a simple system to take out phone number and call once the table is ready. Most places have a self check in QR code and a waitlist, and you get text updates. This experience felt so ancient! We have to wait more than 45 minutes beyond that to get a table. We were waiting by the door and they rudely told us to move away. The soju bloody mary was a disappointment. The veggie burger we got had mushrooms in it which was not mentioned in the description on the menu. Everything else in the food was pretty good and the oatmeal pancakes were really soft, quite mind-blowing actually. Egg dishes were quite good, portions were decent. They move the line fast, much faster than many of the other breakfast places nearby. Gluten free notes: This place is known for baked goods like scones and coffee cake. I had a very disappointing French toast this morning and I'm still craving French toast to make up for it. Maybe I should have tried the more popular oatmeal pancake, but I was just craving something more bread-y and soft and sweet. Their menu says they use raisin focaccia bread, but it didn't taste like any kind of focaccia I've ever had, even if it is day-old bread. The bread was rather thin and seemed a bit more like two pieces of sliced bread put together with raisin in the middle. I had a few bites of my friend's egg scramble and potatoes. It was over-salted, for sure, and we remedied that with lots of ketchup. Note that you must have your full party in order to be seated! read more

We are slowly eating our way through Burlingame and we're finding a lot of gems here. When we go to the Peninsula to eat, we usually end up in San Mateo, but we are now including Burlingame into the mix and it hasn't disappointed us yet. There are a lot of good places to get breakfast and brunch in the Peninsula and Alana's is part of that ever-growing list of places. Alana's Café has two locations: Redwood City and Burlingame. We've heard good things about both locations so it was time to visit one of them a few weekends ago. (On a side note: Every time we go to Burlingame, I always see a friend or family member there whom I haven't seen in years. When we were waiting in line, I saw my second cousin with his family, who was like 12 the last time I saw him. Just a side note, but it's been quite a coincidence of late.) So being this place is popular for breakfast and brunch, we expected a line and indeed the list was long. However, the host promised that it should be quick and quoted me a 15 minute wait...give or take a few. Approximately 15 minutes later, the guy called my name and asked if we were open to seat at the counter. Hey, we were more than happy to grab a seat anywhere. The great thing about seating at the counter is you get to see all the actions - from the ordering, to prepping, cooking and all the wonderful food being sent out. My mind kept saying, "Oh, what is that? Oh, what is that one? Oh, I want that I want that I want that." a bunch of times and it kept repeating on a loop. The most popular dish seemed to be Martha's Famous Swedish Oatmeal Pancake so we ordered one to share. We also had two cups of Cappuccino and I had the Breakfast Special (comes with a side of Coffee Bread) while the Wifey had the Scrambled Eggs with Spinach, Ham, Italian Sausage and Cheddar with a side of Scone. The Cappuccino was good and the pancake was mealy, hearty, creamy and satisfying. I've never had that kind of texture in a pancake before so it was different, but we enjoyed it nonetheless. Both our scrambled eggs were eggcellent and it was more than we bargained for. The portions are more than enough and I think we just ordered too much for the both of us. It was definitely heavy on the carbs, but we ain't complainin' one bit; it definitely hit the breakfast spot for the both of us. And the service was also excellent. All the servers there were attentive, friendly and nice, and they kept refilling our drinks without even asking for it. Alana, we will be back sooner than later. read more

What a cute café off of Burlingame Ave. It is dog friendly and has about 4-5 outside tables. Service was quick and attentive. -- Florentine scramble ($13.25): My bf said he enjoyed his dish. The sausage was flavorful and the eggs were fluffy. I tried some of the potatoes and they were crispy and savory. The sourdough toast was a nice addition to the eggs. -- Martha's famous Swedish oatmeal pancakes ($9.95/short stack): I was expecting something similar to the texture of pancakes but with oatmeal oats, similar to an oatmeal cookie. However, these pancakes had cooked oatmeal that was grilled. The outer edges of the "pancake" were crispy and good but the inside was not fluffy and pretty soggy. I was not a fan of the texture. I swapped out the cinnamon apples for the berry compote but the compote was ice cold and too sour. -- Chicken Apple Sausage ($4.45): The flavor of the sausage was perfect, a hint of sweetness and not too salty. Overall, I would probably pop back in for a lunch date again but would opt for the pecan pancakes next time instead. read more

Went here for the first time for breakfast after an early hiking/day out with my family. The place was small and pretty packed already when we got there, but we were seated fairly fast for a party of 5. We ordered the Farmer's garden, Alaskan scramble, Alana's combo and the famous Swedish oatmeal pancakes with lingonberry compote. Everyone loved their meals and plates were clean afterwards!! My family shared the oatmeal pancakes and it was everyone's favorite. It was deliciously sweet, fluffy and bestly paired with the compote! Our server was so sweet and accommodating! Boring as in... Denny's breakfast sausages, greasy eggs that I can make at home, and sides of pre-cut melons. If I'm going somewhere for breakfast, I want something more than what I could do myself at home, even if it's just atmosphere. Alana's is a cute little (REALLY little) breakfast place, lots of personality... so small that I saw my waitress and chef chowing down in the kitchen in between waiting tables. I loved the coffee cake and rye bread (super fresh...I think the bread is from Le Boulanger?). But the steel-cut oatmeal goes for $4.50 (kinda pricey for the tiny portion of apple-flavored, watery oatmeal). And for 70 cents at my cafeteria at work, I can get the same amount of better quality oatmeal. I've been to Alana's Cafe in Burlingame more than 20 times. Today was my first visit in 3 years since I moved away from the area. My family and I were treated to scrumptious omelettes, hand-rolled oats, great-tasting roast, and freshly delicious coffee cake. My favorite is the Florentine Omelette (mild sausage/spinach/provolone) with those perfectly crisp home fries. Everything from the food, cleanliness, to the staff's attention is wonderful here. Everyone is very pleasant and dedicated to making the dining experience the best it can be. BEWARE: First time at Alanas Cafe. We ordered and I went to restroom to wash up. It is located in the back of the kitchen. As I walked by, cut up ham was sitting out in the open, a plastic bin filled with raw eggs also out open to insects, vermin, etc. Filthy floors capped my impression of this cafe. My friend called me one afternoon to grab brunch here. This is a cute cafe across the street from Quickly's. Food: First off, the food looks amazing on Yelp. We both order the "Farmer's Garden" with a side of toast/scone($13.10) . Service: +1 after we have finished ordering, our food did not come out until 20 minutes later. My friend had to ask the waiter if our food was ready and he said "yes", which was funny because why wasn't our food out? The cook came out instead and apologized for the late meal, with no reason why it was given to us late. No one came up to us and checked on us throughout the meal. A lady came out offering coffee refill to the other tables and didn't bother asking us and my friend had to stop her before going back in to ask for the refill. She goes back in and comes back out with the check and sets it on our table. Rude! We weren't even done with our meal! No offer of any sort of container for our left over food since they gave us the bill. Side note: they don't have boxes to put your left over in, they will give you cheap plastic plates and aluminum foil. The +2 star is for the food. They serve the food with either a scone or a coffee cake and some fruit. Portions are decent and you'll definitely be full if you finish it all Now that I've reviewed the food, I would give the actual atmosphere probably 3. Average. Somewhat busy when we came so our server seated our party of 3 at a 2 person table and then came out with a foldable chair from the back and tacked it on the side of the table. Ghetto. I usually don't get potatoes with breakfast but theirs are not heavy and seasoned with fresh herbs. Their scones are perfect (not dry and perfect consistency). Their soup is tasty to! Place is tiny but they do offer seating both inside and out. There is a crowd at the door but the wait isn't too long. We had a party of 3 and the wait was about 10 min, if not shorter. We were seated at a table originally set for two. Then they pull out a grey folding chair for our third guest. That's tacky. The food looks better than it tastes. Their scones, however, is very delicious. I ordered the Mediterranean scramble. No ketchup bottle. Ketchup was served in those paper cups from fast food restaurants. At the end of an ordinary experience, my friend asked for a box to take her leftovers. She got in return, a paper plate and a piece of foil. Seriously?! Even more tacky! Ambience-10/10 Alana's benefits from it's lower notoriety in that it doesn't have the insanely busy breakfast rush that makes for noisy dining. The newly renovated main Cafe is cozy and exceptionally ambient while the outdoor dining options do not suffer from intrusive distractions. Service-10/10. Because Alana's does not attract a busy breakfast crowd, service is fairly intimate and prompt. Coffee refills are offered quickly and food arrives within a few minutes of ordering. Overall 30/30. This hidden gem deserves to be better known and better appreciated. It's fairly affordable and not as hard to book as other Burlingame haunts. I would say.. seats 30-40 people? they have specials daily, so always check it out! I went with the farmers garden, which is packed with vegetables and that's what I prefer as a first meal. I substituted the bread for coffee cake. Service was great and food was so good! I called in before and asked about wait times (about 20 min) which was great. We put our name in the waiting list and we're seated 10-15minutes after. Me and my sister ordered the French Toast which to our delight was served with some fresh berries on top. It was really good. My aunt ordered the Florentine with English muffins and she finished the whole plate and wanted more. The house salsa was very tasty as well and added a nice kick. We found this place through Yelp to begin with it's a small hole in the wall that actually has an impressively large space despite its deceptive small entrance Ordered the California scramble with egg whites which are awesome in flavor without the need for tons of butter like some breakfast places. The pancakes are amazing! The pancakes are made of oatmeal and pancake batter. I subbed my toast with the oatmeal pancake for a small up charge with Apple cinnamon for something that should be a dessert lol. Decor is very neutral and warm, the place feels lively as even during its off hours there was quite a few people here. The restaurant itself is situated right in the bustle of Burlingame Broadway where there is so many stores nearby to walk off that awesome meal you just had. The Company's Coming was smaller than most portions I've had at other brunch places at the same price point. Company's Coming is actually the Farmer's Garden with Italian Sausage. There wasn't a lot of Italian Sausage, so I think I would've rather just gotten the Farmer's Garden. Man were we in need of food after finishing a 5K - it wasn't long, we just needed an excuse for brunch! 2 key things we look for for brunch (ordered by priority) - 1) they must have drinks, 2) need sweet and savory Alana's had both, and a long wait. I think this place always has a line though, there were groups just waiting, sipping coffee like they knew there was going to be a wait. Lesson: GO EARLY, and have everyone there. Food: proper brunch, eggs benedict, scrambles, waffles, etc. It's a traditional brunch, made well. They put their small twists on some of the classics, I had the salmon benedict. The hollandaise though, I've had better (sorry). Ambiance: it's a tight space, just like a diner, cut in half. It's nostalgic of a small town, where everyone knows you.
