I came down here with a friend after reviewing the menu on their website. Alaska Chopped & Chowdered is located in a building that housed the old Village Inn on Spenard off of Wisconsin next to the Wendy's. The employees gave us a friendly greeting and we were promptly seated at a table by the window. Keep in mind that reservations are recommended for dinner which we didn't know but the maitre d' was nice enough to make an exception to take us in. The interior had the old Village Inn layout but was renovated with new tables and chairs. The place itself was busy with a good-size crowd on a Saturday evening. There are two different menus: one each for lunch and dinner. Entree selections of steak, seafood, and salads are featured in the dinner menu while burgers, paninis, sandwiches, and salads round out the lunch menu. We had a friendly waiter who promptly took our drink orders and gave us a few minutes to look over the menu. For an appetizer, we ordered the Roasted Zucchini Slices with balsamic glaze, crumbled feta cheese, cracked peppercorns, and garnished with chiffon basil. For our entrees, I decided on the Garlic Paprika Shrimp (shrimp topped with a tomato base sauce with garlic and paprika for added spiciness on a bed of seasoned rice). My friend ordered a bowl of the Tuscan Chicken Rice Soup. We did not have to wait long for our orders despite the growing dinner crowd during the 6 o'clock hour. Our appetizer came out several minutes after ordering. The Zucchini Slices were delicious. They didn't skimp on the basil and the feta cheese. This went very well as a flavor combination with the balsamic glaze. The Garlic Paprika Shrimp was also very good. The shrimp was jumbo size with plenty of garlic flavor and sauce to make it an Italian-style dish. My friend enjoyed her Tuscan Chicken Soup along with a side of oyster crackers. The texture was rich and hearty with plenty of shredded chicken. The bowl size and the amount she received was good enough for a meal in itself. In addition to the regular menus, there are daily specials that the server will mention before ordering. There are several selections on both the lunch and dinner menu that definitely warrants future visits. Some of the lunch selections that caught my attention include the Caprese Stuffed Avocado (avocado stuffed with tomatoes and bocconcini which are small mozzarella cheese balls, in fresh pesto served on a bed of field greens and balsamic reduction...this sounds amazing), Crab Cake Poppers (poppers stuffed with fresh crab and a lemon basil aioli), The Lamb-Burgini (extra thick with pickled red onions and tzatziki sauce on a brioche bun...this sounds like another winner), and the Bacon Guac Melt (guacamole, bacon, roasted red peppers, and pepper jack cheese topped with crushed tortilla chips). Dinner selections of note include Stuffed Mushrooms (filled with sage sausage, cream cheese, breadcrumbs, herbs and seasonings topped with alfredo sauce...wow, I have to try that), Seared Salmon (with garlic green beans and sweet peppers topped with dill sauce), the NY Strip Steak with brandy peppercorn sauce in a 12oz. and the Creme Brulee Cheesecake from the dessert menu. With a versatile menu like this, I believe they will be a lot more busier once the tourist season is in full swing especially when it's in close proximity to the airport. read more

Came here for the chowder and got the Alaska Clam Chowder which they said was the most popular. With "chowder" in the name it better be good I thought and it was! Creamy, chunky, and no sand grit. We arrived at 12pm and was seated promptly. They already had quite a few tables for only being open 30 minutes! I loved the new layout & decor. It didn't remind me at all of the village inn that used to be here. The server we had was very sweet & came back to check on our food a few times. We tried a cup of the jalapeño cheddar chowder first it was surprisingly spicy. I was impressed! We also tried the Halibut chowder which was AMAZING! I was a little disappointed they don't ask you if you want fresh ground pepper on the chowder though. Hopefully they will start having the servers do that in the future. I ordered the bacon guacamole sandwich & it was outstanding! They didn't skimp on the bacon or the guacamole & the sourdough was toasted and buttered perfectly! This place is a hidden gem and the closest 5 star restaurant to the airport! The food was phenomenal. We started off with the fried goat cheese and brie balls. Scrumptious. We then had a the chowder flight which gave us a rollercoaster to our taste buds that left us wanting more. Wife had the scallops cabanora. I had the NY steak. For dessert we had the perfect finish, the Pineapple Tarte Tatim. Service was excellent. Highly recommend for anyone local or not. You will leave with a stuffed stomach and as smile. read more

This is my second time here and as a New Englander was excited to have a place that has both chowder and lobster rolls. The service was great both times, but unfortunately when we ordered the lobster roll for my birthday tonight for $51 (eek! I think it was $15 less the first time around), there was a decent sized shell. I joked with the server that I didn't even know that was possible growing up in New England, but not great for a $51 dish. read more

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT EAT HERE ! If you plan on bringing the family for dinner think twice. This restaurant is not baby friendly. My 4 month old was having a good time playfully expressing herself and the manager approached us and said to do something about our baby because "customers were complaining." We were midway into our dinner and felt absolutely uncomfortable to stay. Not once did he try to apologize for his approach to us nor did he try to accommodate us in any way. We felt forced to leave and we were receiving dirty looks as well from an older couple. Keep in mind the restaurant was lonely . I'm unsure if it was customers complaining or simply the management. If I would have known this restaurant isn't kid friendly we would have never came here to begin with. This has never happened to me. 0/10 do not recommend. read more

Went for lunch with four adults-- both couples got an order of the chowder flight to share (can pick 3 out of clam, halibut, salmon and buffalo chicken). All ordered a lobster roll (one couple split one). Chowders were tasty, hot, good concept to try multiples. The lobster roll, while delicious, was extremely small. It looked like a slice of Texas toast folded in half stuffed with lobster. The couple who split theirs was a little taken aback by how small the portion was (especially with the very large side of fries that goes with it. It seemed out of balance). It is a premium ingredient so understand that it is quite expensive to source here. Service was wonderful. No issues. Decorations were tasteful and the space was rather quiet. Tired from a long week's work, my husband, visiting daughter, and I decided to try out a place new to us. It's part of the Open Table app. Impressive. So I made reservations. The cool gray walls contrasted with dark and created a calming ambiance. A trilogy of multileveled lamps hung tastefully over each table. We were seated at a booth/, chairs combo, set with white soup bowls that held our utensils wrapped in a linen napkin. We perused the 3 menus for chowders, entrees, and libation. The server was knowledgeable and helpful in making out selections. Small bowls of chowder, filet mignon, poached buttered halibut, and an intriguing salmon/avocado/mango bowl. We tried the battered string beans( cause my colleague thought they were especially good) for starters. The best part of the meal was the chowder. All three of us remarked on how over salted the entrees were. The amount of salt on my poached halibut detracted severely from the seat of what may have been a delicate basil pasta. Even the mignon got a 'salty' label. None of the platters were licked clean at the end of our meal. None of us wanted a doggie bag. The server was concerned when I suggested she tell the chef to be less liberal with the salt, and she removed the price of our drinks as compensation. A kind gesture. We paid the near $200 check sorry that we hadn't gone to one of our 'ole standbys, ' but sometimes ya gotta gamble. Apparently, my colleague likes the place a lot. My boyfriend and I went here and we had excellent experience. The server was genuinely thankful we were there, and we could see that in the rest of the staff. Service and ambiance 10/10! I got a starter salad(not on menu) 10/10, wine and beer list 10/1- (no hard liquor) Creme Brulé Cheesecake WOW amazing 10/10. Then for the main course I got the Buttered Poached Halibut. The Halibut was excellent! Perfectly made. The pasta could use more seasoning/flavor or the sauce could be richer. My boyfriend got the salmon chowder 10/10 he got the Scallops Carbonara - again the seafood was 10/10 the sauce could just use a bit more flavor. Some people like a more mild flavor- but I'd reccommend maybe putting salt and pepper on the tables for people that want a bit more on it maybe? It would probably be a good place for a date night. I ordered a bowl of the chowder and a side salad as well as a beer. The portions were a little smaller than I expected but everything was tasty. And we shared the crème brûlée cheesecake. I loved the chowder flight, but wish the server knew what went where. The fries were just meh. The halibut sandwich was just okay. Good, but basic. The lobster roll was tasty, but very small portion and the bread on the outside looked like it was Texas toast that wasn't even a complete slice. The crème brûlée cheesecake was okay, I love cheesecake but it tasted more burnt and there wasn't a crisp sugar top, it was not freshly made, true crème brûlée should be made in that moment to make it really work. The tab was 100 dollars. Which I thought was overpriced for the quality. Some of it was good, but not for that price. read more

Came on a Thursday evening with a reservation. (Saw later as we were leaving that they were turning away walk-ins, so that was a good call.) I started with the chowder flight. That's a great idea and was well executed with three different chowders which were each flavorful in their own right. Continuing the seafood theme I had scallops carbonara. The only reason we came here was for the Chowder flight. We saw pictures online and had to try it, which was a good deal since its only 9 doll hairs. I was a little concerned when they tasted all the same. I think the only difference was the meats? but If i wasn't chewing on a piece of meat i couldnt taste it in the soup itself. The Salmon here is to die for. They serve it with pickled onion, on a bed of rice and veggies, and its just superb! Probably the best salmon I have had in my life. I could taste the freshness. This dish makes me want to move here and catch my own salmon every day. We sat at the bar, and were entertained by the bartender, which was one of her first days. She was pleasant and professional, great job. The ambiance was nice enough to sit at the bar and not feel out of place like some restaurants. It is also a plus being so close to the beer, and be able to try different taps faster than a waiter/waitress bringing it to your table. Not 100% sure of the name of the beers I had but they definitely had a Berry base. Whatever it was anything with berry, get it. Loved the beer there. read more

The restaurant is absolutely beautiful inside. So convenient while staying at the Holiday Inn next-door. My husband and I ordered the chowder flight, and it was amazing. The staff was super helpful in helping me find a dish that would suit my dietary needs. They went above and beyond to make it happen. My husband, and I both ordered halibut dishes. He had halibut over pasta, and I had halibut over a mix of vegetables which they prepared, especially for me. We really enjoyed our meal here, and hope to visit again on our way home. We frequently come to Alaska because we have family here, and stay at the Holiday Inn next-door at each visit. So nice to have a wonderful restaurant right next-door! read more

Scallop Carbonara - scallops good. Pasta COLD. And who doesn't serve pasta without bread. For the price, you think you could get bread and a vege. King Crab - Market price high so you don't get much. No fault of the restaurant for that. But again for the cost, you get that and maybe an ice cream scoop of mashed potatoes. Again, for the cost, how about a vege also. Make it worth it. Wagyu Burger - Cook needs to know the difference between medium rare and well done. If it wasn't for the service and especially the waitress this first time there, it would have been a complete bust of a trip.
