It was my first time dining here. My boyfriend and I shared a meal special that included New York steak with black pepper sauce, grilled shrimp, steamed broccoli, corn and spaghetti. The steak was huge and definitely enough for two people. It was delicious, and the black pepper sauce was very flavorful. I just wish they gave more of it. When I asked for extra sauce, they only provided a small container. The broccoli were fresh and crunchy, the corn was sweet and buttery and the spaghetti had a slight sweetness that I enjoyed. We also ordered unsweetened lemon iced tea. I wish they offered Splenda, as we had to use Sweet'N Low to sweeten it. The first time I tried Garden Cafe, I ordered the black pepper steak udon to go. Our first time here, we actually enjoyed it! The place was a little busy when we got there but we were seated quickly. At first we didn't know what to get and decided to go with the steak with shrimp and it didnt disappoint! Flavor was there, tender, well seasoned, and the portion was really big for a fraction of a price I would pay for a steak in a steakhouse. Their congee was excellent. What I was looking for a real chinese congee. The eggplant with meat was really good too. However the noodle that comes with the steak was mediocre in taste so skip the noodle. Also had one of their appetizer, a bread wrapped in flat noodles with oyster sauce i guess with peanut sauce, weird taste but very good! Love these cafes for their variety and daily specials. I haven't had the minced beef gravy over rice w/ a fried egg in a while so I decided on that. Of course, as I glanced over the menu again, I saw the chicken w/ garlic sauce ( or onion, black pepper, etc). Now I'm torn deciding between the two. And lo and behold, they had a combination of the two. Portions and flavor were satisfying, especially if you are craving two flavors. I also ordered a milk tea and it was reasonably strong. Have been coming to this Garden Cafe for almost 30 years. My family used to love coming here for breakfast, the selection was great. The kids really enjoyed the ribeye steak with eggs, hash brown, and toast for just under $10; while the parents loved the congee and chow mein. It has been years since our last visit and we decided to come here for lunch. The two of us shared the Baked Pork Loin in Tomato Sauce with Fried Rice, Baked Portuguese Chicken with Taro with Rice, and Ox-Tongue Curry with Pasta. Everything was delicious. The Baked Pork Loin in Tomato Sauce came with two big pieces of pork chop and the fried rice and tomato sauce were very tasty. Portions were generous. The Baked Portuguese Chicken with Taro was made with plenty of boneless chicken meat. The coconut taste was distinct. The Ox-Tongue Curry came with four big pieces of ox tongue and the curry sauce was awesome. I was so anxious to eat that I forgot to take pictures of two of the dishes before digging in! The ambiance is very casual but comfortable. It's pretty typical of a Hong Kong style cafe. Service was good, all three ladies on the floor were really friendly and helpful. Don't trash on this place, it's been here for decades. This review is only for the 3-5:30pm afternoon tea time . I like the diversity of the menu for their afternoon tea time compared to Delicious Food Corner, Tasty Choice, or Alice's Kitchen (limited menu). My go-to is the grilled chicken steak because it's damn big for a tea time vibe. The spaghetti ain't bad at all. The baked spaghetti is also another one of my favorite. Only the lemongrass pork chop is on my not recommended since it's tiny and salty. I even get their porridge for the tea menu. The hot milk tea is great and they don't really tell me no on 2nd-3rd refills. It's an excellent value for being complimentary. Service is good, I don't know why people are so shy to ask for service. It's a Chinese/Cantonese spot, you ask for service not expect it. They don't scrowl or groan when you ask for a refill, they rather do it quick actually. My boyfriend and I came to Garden Café in Alhambra because we wanted something quick and easy, without a long wait. If we weren't in a rush, my preferred local Hong Kong Café is JJs. This location of Garden Café has a small parking structure in the back or street parking nearby. When we entered, we were surprised at how busy they were. We got one of the last remaining tables at the time we came. My boyfriend ordered a Grilled Chicken Steak ($13.50) with black pepper sauce and pasta. I ordered the Grilled Pork Chop ($15.50) with garlic sauce and the pasta. I also added a Lemon Iced Tea ($4.95). My food came out first and it took a while until they brought out my boyfriend's food, but they brought a chicken steak and pork chop plate, missing pasta. They said they would bring the pasta later. At the point my poor boyfriend had waited so long he didn't want them to go remake it, so he just ate the incorrect order. We double checked the receipt and the correct item was entered, but the plate brought to us was incorrect. I'm wondering if the swapped 2 of the orders. And then remember the pasta that was suppose to come?? They might have forgotten because we had to remind them, and it didn't come until the end of the meal. I was sharing my pasta with him during the meal so he can have a more balanced bite. As for my food I felt like the portions are huge and the pricing is reasonable, as it is with similar business types. I've yet to find this dish anywhere in the bay, so I like savor every last bite! The reason why I'm giving this place 2 stars this time is because during my visit for afternoon tea today, I walked in with an almost-empty clear Starbucks cup that I just wanted to finish and toss but didn't want to leave it in my car. In the past, walking in with outside drinks has never been an issue. However, this time, the manager on duty decided to say something after he had just taken our order. He said that he didn't want to say anything because the cup was almost empty (..um, so why did you?) but that he didn't want other customers seeing outside cups. Like, wtf, it's a Starbucks black coffee- who hasn't seen that? It obviously won't impede on their business because we were also sitting in the back corner where no one really sees us. The restaurant was also quite empty at the time. Anyway, I literally asked him- "then what do you want me to do?" Because we had already been seated and our order was taken when he mentioned it. If he had said something while we were walking in, I wouldn't have had an issue and just tossed it. Why wait until AFTER we were seated and ordered? But he said, "finish the drink so that the cup is empty". Again, wtf?? So I should chug my drink just so I have an empty cup on the table?? He was also SO loud when he was talking to me, as if he wanted neighboring tables to hear. Had I not already ordered, I was on the brink of walking out right then and there. There are PLENTY of restaurants in the 626 and it's never a difficult task to lose a regular customer. I have never had anyone give me a hard time about outside drinks even at more prestigious restaurants. If he thinks that this small cup of coffee was worth losing a regular customer over, then so be it because I am never coming back. read more

It was loaded with seafood like clam, mussels, and shrimp. There was a Japanese ramen style egg and a sheet of seaweed. It came in a fancy wooden box. It was quite elevated compared to what I expected from an Asian cafe. The sea urchin udon was pretty good. Not the best I've had. The bread tasted freezer burnt, like the took it out of the freezer. The lamb, pork chop, chicken steak combo was generous is quantity, and typical for an Asian cafe in terms of quality. Alhambra has some strange ones and they will give you a ticket. They don't speak English very well and the service isn't fine dining kind of service. They can often be categorized as rude. When I asked for a refill on my iced tea, they just said "hang on". They don't bring all your food at once, but they do bring it out as soon as an order is done so it comes out extremely hot. We sat next to a "supply" station so we grabbed our own containers to put our leftovers in. I couldn't find the correct size bag, but ththe staff did help me get that one. Towards the end of the lunch, I ordered two red bean drinks with ice cream... one for my Mom and one for me... now I would come back here just for the red bean drink... it was so yummy especially with the ice cream! Yum Yum! Staff was very attentive and they made sure we all got our orders in timely. Yes, we were a big party of 21! Service was decent. Prices range from $15 - $20 depending on the dish. Can't be picky when you're trying to find places that open at 8pm on Thanksgiving night, Garden Cafe fed me for sure. Is it giving me the same flavors I crave for in HK style cafes? Not really. My goal that night was to be fed and the food was okay. They had some turkey special but I really don't want to eat any turkey this Thanksgiving. Ending up finding their chef's special with the option of steak or lamb chops, pick your sauce between black pepper or mushroom sauce, comes with shrimp and abalone, and side of rice or spaghetti that tasted like Filipino spaghetti. For under 30 bucks, that dish also came with a cup of soup and creme brulee (unless they sold out). That is a steal, and it wasn't marked up for the holidays, hell yes! Downside of it is that you can tell the whole dish was just cooked separately and plated all together. I had imagined the spaghetti to be under my lamb chops and both smothered in black pepper sauce. I'm good with tomato sauce for spaghetti, but I'm not cool with this ketchup tasting spaghetti that's so soft, you can't even choke on it. The abalone and shrimp were good additions though, I honestly can't believe the price because the abalone were quite sizable. Both combos come with hot milk tea or coffee. Everything is super delicious but the porridge and pineapple butter bun really stood out.
