Almansor Grill is a lovely, affordable spot near Almansor Park and the Almansor Golf Course, perfect for casual, home-style meal. It is a family friendly location and also features a bar. I came in with my partner and tried the chicken fried steak which was a 10/10. The gravy pairs well with the both the steak and the eggs. We also tried the chilaquiles verde which were flavorful and came with generous portions. The chili cheese fries were good, though not my favorite. The pancakes were fluffy and delicious, and the chicken sandwich is very delicious and simple! The clam chowder is also good and came with a generous amount of clam. The potatoes are a bit on the oily side for my liking. Overall, I would recommend Almansor Grill if you're in the area and looking for an affordable, comfortable meal. I've visited this establishment four times now, and while the food is always great, the service consistently falls short. On two separate visits, my pancakes were forgotten. Most recently, our waitress, Gisselle, didn't check on us even once after our food was brought out. She noticed our empty coffee mugs but didn't offer a refill. It's disappointing because the food truly is enjoyable, but the lack of attention to service takes away from the overall experience. Not local to this area, was visiting when an overwhelming wave of hunger overcame. Stumbled upon this quaint place, not knowing what kind of sustenance they would provide, and sat down. Immediately, I was approached by the cordial and most kind server, Dolores. Upon her warm and welcoming recommendations, I eagerly order the waffle with berries and breakfast burrito. Found a GEM in my area!! This place honestly knocks the big breakfast chain restaurants!! Their omelette is to DIE FOR. I believe their salsa is homemade as well! I just had breakfast and I can't say enough about the food and service. I eat here quite often. I especially love breakfast here because I'm dieting and I can order a omelette my way without all the carbs. It's always delicious and I eat every bite, my plate is clean for the next person. There are 2 other North Woods Inn locations (Covina and La Mirada), one Steak 'N Stein (Pico Rivera) and one Clearman's Galley, also here in San Gabriel, aka "The Boat" for its signature red boat exterior. There used to be a Steak 'N Stein in San Gabriel as well, but now it's just a larger North Woods. The Galley has relocated and been enlarged a few feet south of its original spot; it's now akin to a sports bar, but kids are welcome. Both restaurants are on Rosemead just south of Huntington. A a child I was entranced by North Woods Inn's signature snow-topped roof. The exterior and interior are styled as a winter mountain log cabin hunting lodge. The interior is filled with lodge tchotchkes like taxidermied bears, mounted elk heads, stained glass windows of wintry scenes. The floor is strewn with sawdust and peanut shells you are encouraged to throw there. The dining room is on the dark side and has a full bar. There are several large banquet rooms beyond the restrooms. We came for the DineLA lunch. Note the restaurant has 2 entrances, the host stand is located inside the north entrance; look for the snow-topped entry arch and the Christmas pine trees on the doors. The main menu sits on each table on an easel. Every table gets a bowl of peanuts. The DineLA menu has 3 courses, all with options, at both lunch and dinner, with fancier options on the pricier dinner menu. Any beverages are extra. Here's what we ordered: 1) Beer-battered zucchini sticks. Ordered a la carte. Decent zucchini, but a smallish portion. The blue cheese dressing served alongside did not have strong blue cheese flavour. 2) Starter. Options were salads (house and red cabbage) or soup, plus cheese bread. The cabbage salad had a decent vinaigrette, the house salad's house dressing was rather bland, ranch-like I suppose. The clam chowder was okay, more potatoes than clams. There was another soup option I don't recall. The cheese bread was very good. 3) Entree. Options were petite steak and shrimp, petite filet mignon or jumbo coconut shrimp. We had the first two. The petite steak was a top sirloin, decently grilled with properly hatched grill marks. The 3 shrimp were supposedly grilled, served with drawn butter and lemon. The petite filet was indeed petite. We both opted for the baked potato side, with cheese butter. Large and pretty tasty. Other carb options were rice pilaf or steak fries. 4) Dessert. Key Lime Pie Tart or Chocolate Mousse Cake. The tart came wrapped in paper like a muffin, nicely tart with a bit of an aftertaste. Service was nice and attentive. Overall a decent meal, good value with DineLA. I'd call this a mid-level steakhouse, probably better than Outback but lesser than The Derby, Fleming's or Ruth's Chris.

Looking online they have a $35 per person free set menu which wasn't even given to us. They up charge $10 to share. No thank you. I might as well order my own food and take home leftovers. They wanted to up charge $1 for fries instead of rice pilaf. Talk about nickel and dimming folks. Food was just ok. I certainly don't need to rush back. Northwoods has been a staple for so long and the quality has just gone down. So sad

The combos include French Fries and a soft drink. On this visit, I ordered a regular char hamburger with lettuce, tomato, mustard and pickles. I chose onion rings as my side (French fries was the other option). The burger was made to order (add-on options are bacon, avocado, or pastrami). The portions were good, tasty and a very satisfying meal. It's a sit down meal & a server takes your order. Our server was efficient and checked on us once and that was it. We ordered: Machaca (with beans and rice, menudo & chilaquiles. Our food arrived shortly. Decent portions. My husband ordered and forgot to order the red sauce for my chilaquiles. It was good but I prefer the green sauce. The server said it was hotter (spicier) than the red sauce so it might've been best that I got the red sauce instead. Hubby said his Machaca was average & he had better. All in all, it hit the spot to kill the hunger & I took the rest of the menudo home. The experience was average yet I find myself thinking that we would've been better off at Macho Cafe which was closer to us from home. The reception there was warmer.

Aside from that the Breakfast burrito with Chorizo was good. The Rice and beans were good... I got the Chilaquiles but if I were to ever go back (which more than likely will not be happening) I would order the burrito again. The steak was chewy (that remark is from my 10 year old granddaughter who ordered it). Plenty of parking in the lot adjacent and seating outside on a hot day would probably be nice in their breezeway that looks like a garage. Respectfully Reviewed.
