I visited Ajo cafe based on yelp reviews on a Friday afternoon. That's pretty much the only way to find out about it or by word of mouth since the Cafe is tucked away and not visible from the street. In terms of parking there is a parking lot right beside the Cafe, and if that is full there appeared to be plenty of street parking. From a service perspective they were just fine. The Cafe itself had a nice combination of indoor and outdoor seating. Patio is great if the weather is decent! For my dish I got the Monte Cristo. By far one of the best versions of this sandwich I had ever had. I was skeptical about it being served with sour cream at first. However, when you combine the sour cream, tasty jam, flavorful ham, and the battered bread it's an amazing combination! Overall I thought it was a quaint and delightful experience. I will definitely be returning for that sandwich! read more

This is such awesome breakfast cafe in old town, might be the best in all of Scottsdale. The staff are super friendly and it feels like you're eating at a fiends house when you go. Not to mention they make all their sauces in house too, my favorite is the alo red. I have it with the pastrami breakfast burrito, which is incredible. About a five min walk from hotel valley ho. Came in on a Wednesday morning, nice and welcoming atmosphere. Server was very nice! We never thought cream cheese and smoked salmon belonged in an omelette until today and MAN that was good! Also please try the curry ketchup because it was really good!! read more

This cute cafe is located behind Nance Construction if you're on 1st street. Walk along the parking lot between Cornish Pastry and look for the umbrellas on your left. It's fairly small, but there were tables to spare as early brunchers were clearing out around 12:30pm on a Saturday. I got the Monte Cristo which was DELICIOUS. The french toast had a crunchy corn flake coating, and that textural difference was SO GOOD. It was very filling without being too heavy. It came with little sides of strawberry jam and sour cream, as well as some syrup. Everyone was super nice, the prices were super reasonable - I can't wait to be back!!! read more

I love this quaint little cafe. First time here and definitely not my last. The Friendliest of staff. I had the horchatta latte and Spanish tortilla. Both were excellent. Not your typical American menu. The owner is from Estonia. The young staff are proud to work here. Their speciality mushroom latte is a hit with all. First things first: don't miss the Estonian Dessert Bread. I was curious, so I ordered it as an appetizer. What a treat! Now, parking was very challenging when we visited, but my husband and I were glad we didn't let that dissuade us. Three turns around the block, and two spots opened up. Don't let parking keep you away! The patio is spacious and comfortable, but it was very hot for us New Englanders, so we opted for the dining room. Upon entering the restaurant, I immediately flashed back to my college years in Southern California. The ambience was relaxed, but not lazy. Decor was eclectic, sentiment, and original. The staff was friendly and I felt like I fit right in with the regulars. I ordered the Monte Carlo and my husband ordered the Pastrami Burrito. The turkey and ham on my sandwich were abundant and real! Turkey was nicely roasted and seasoned. No lunch meat here. The Monte Carlo is served with sour cream and their custom blend of berry jams. So good! I skipped most of the French Toast because I'd had the Estonian Bread already, however what I did eat was tasty. They have a unique, cornflake-crusted recipe that was impressive. No soggy toast here. Now, about the Pastrami Burrito. My husband doesn't rave about food often, but that burrito knocked his socks off! "I would eat that EVERYDAY!" The owner told is his pastrami's from California, and that tells me ever I need to know. It's the best! And, man-oh-man was it a mouthful! Huge, and finished on the grill. Excellent! Oh, and pay the buck for their homemade hot sauce. Again, raves from my husband. If they bottled it, we'd be packing our suitcases. The coffee was wonderfully, by the way. The waitress kept our mugs full. Fabulous service! Having said all this, the icing on the cake was getting to chat with the owner. He shared some of his personal story, how he developed his palate, and ultimately got a great lead on mechanic. Our road trip hit a stall and we needed a good mechanic. I just had a feeling this local businessman might be able to make a suggestion. Well, he certainly did. He made a quick call and sent us in our way with directions to best exhaust guy in town. All in all, I wish we could take Alo back to Boston with us. That was definitely our best restaurant experience in Scottsdale. Thanks, Steve! read more

Food was ok. Meal prep was very slow and server did not advise of 20 minute wait to warm up the potato pie. Looks out at an alley and the back of a restaurant. Very unattractive view. read more

Kicking myself that I'm just discovering this place as a local. Was intrigued by the international flare and pleasantly surprised by the large menu and well executed dishes. The tortilla Espanola was on point. Small but affordable drink menu, so definitely not your Sunday funday party spot and more your Sunday relaxing and leisurely breakfast spot. Even in the heat, the misters and umbrellas kept the patio space quite pleasant (there is an inside too). Looking forward to coming back to try more breakfast dishes and the new Bistro hours- aperitifs and snacks are my jam! read more

This is a fantastic little place. We sat outside on a beautiful morning. Our server couldn't have been nicer! We had the hatch green chili omelette and the corn flake crusted French toast. OMGOODESS!!!!! This gem of a restaurant is sooo GOOD!! I almost do not have the words to describe it. We went on a Sunday morning, and it was busy. The place is tiny so there's not much indoor seating, but we eventually got a seat inside. All of the staff here is super friendly. We did have a wait time to get our food. But man o' man!! This food was SO worth the wait. It actually gave us amnesia and we forgot we had even been waiting at all! What wait?? lol Get the cornflake crusted French Toast with the berry compote. It's mandatory. And the Hatch Chile omelet will bless your life Trust me. And P.S. Whoever is in charge of making the curry ketchup: I love you! read more

I have been wanting to visit this little and kind of hidden breakfast spot for a while now and finally made it in. You have the option of sitting inside or outside at tables with umbrellas. The menu has most of your breakfast favorites with some fun surprises, like South African sausage, a Spanish egg dish, and apricot jalapeno jelly. They also have a full blown coffee and tea bar. I ordered my go to breakfast order, eggs over medium, potatoes, sourdough toast, a side of bacon, and coffee. The eggs were cooked perfectly - the whites were fully cooked and the yolks were still runny. The potatoes were well seasoned with rosemary and were soft inside. The sourdough toast was amazing! The bread was extra thick, toasted well on the outside and pillowy soft on the inside. The side of bacon comes with (4) large slices! Finally my coffee had good flavor and I added some cream, sugar, and cinnamon to make it a little fancy. The staff was very kind and attentive. The sides of jam, hot sauce, sugar, etc. were brought to the table in one time use containers due to the times we're living in. All employees wore masks. The restaurant felt very clean and safe and has an interesting history. Ask about it when you visit! I'll definitely see myself enjoying more Saturday morning breakfasts here in the future! read more

Seriously how homemade can one place be? What a gem of a find in Old Town Scottsdale. Not big in space but huge in flavors! South African meets Spanish with a French kiss. I ordered the Monte Cristo with ham, turkey and melted Swiss between two thick slices of cornflake crusted French toast. The berry compote along with the side of sour cream, when mixed together, made for the perfect topping. Hubby had the smoked pork tenderloin and a side of buttered shrimp. Just wow! My second time here. The first was right before Covid-19 closures and I sat outside and a very nice older friendly lady helped me. I had the shrimp and eggs and potatoes with curry ketchup and it was delicious. I said I'd be back and kinda forgot about it. This time, I sat inside and tried their monte cristo waffle without cheese. It was so good! Liked the syrup and fruit compote on the side too. But extremely filling so I only ate half. Kinda reminded me of a croque madame. Also had their lavender earl gray which was yummy. I had a younger waitress that helped me and she was very polite and efficient. Can definitely recommend and will be coming back. I parked on the street both times. It appears they have a few parking spaces. Alo is an unassuming little cafe that serves the most interesting breakfast entrees. Have a craving for shrimp with your eggs at 10am? No problem. Cant decide between an omelette or chicken marsala? I say, why not have both! Now you can, when you find yourself at Alo. The food looked good, but we came for some take out coffee. It was stupid expensive ($40 for 3 lattes and a drip coffee), they have a mandatory 17% tip on to go orders AND it took 20 minutes to get the coffee. And, they were rude when we complained. Do not come here for takeout coffee!!! read more

The atmosphere is super cute and if the weather is nice like it was for us it is beautiful to sit outside. staff was very kind. We liked the bacon breakfast sandwich better than the sausage. We also regretted not getting the Monte Cristo over the crunchy french toast as we wished either the syrup or the french toast was a little sweeter or more flavorful. Honestly, I think Alo Cafe is my new favorite breakfast spot in Scottsdale. I love how quaint and happy this place is. It's perfect if you want to get away from the crowds of all the other breakfast/brunch restaurants in the area. There were about 6 tables inside and a few more outside. All of the food is freshly made which I appreciate and it didn't even take very long to come out! Our waitress was so very nice and attentive. Both of the items we ordered were just amazing. I told my boyfriend we would share half and half but I almost didn't want to hand over the other half of my monte cristo it was that good! The waffle was very good too, maybe a little too sweet for me but still just as yummy. If you're a coffee person, their drip coffee is really rich, I would definitely recommend it. I'll be back soon! I was craving Breakfast today and I was intrigued by their unique menu, so I ordered Alo Cafe on DoorDash. All of the food arrived on time and was correct but the food was lukewarm- I'll blame it on DoorDash. The Ali's Signature French Toast was quite unique. It was coated in corn flakes! The French Toast was a little soggy, which I was confused by considering the Corn Flakes on top were supposed to be crunchy. I would maybe try something else next time, but I give them points for the flavor and the originality! The next dish was the Lox No Bagel Omelet, which was delicious! Once again, it was an unordinary concept but they executed it perfectly! The Omelette was buttery and soft and the lox, onions, capers and cream cheese inside meshed perfectly. By far this was one of the best omelette I've had in a while. Even the potatoes were super good! I was quite impressed by the omelette, and I'm sure I'll be back to try more. Time marches on ... but there's exceptions, like Alo! Haven't been here in a long time, until yesterday. Had my go to Cuban sandwich. It was like stepping back in my glorious past. I really like the first couple of times I've been here but I came here today and was very taken back by the service. I asked for just a side of bacon and an egg over medium and the egg came out over easy.. not a big deal I asked if they could remake it and they did with no stress. when they came out with the remade egg the waitress then swapped plates and then began to pour my bacon onto the new plate and dropped it on the table then picked it up with her hands.... It was just very weird and obviously I didn't eat it because she touched it. read more

We had a pesto omelet - very different and good - and a pastrami burrito - very good and very large. Service was good. The place is small. There is outdoor patio with misters, but since it was 100 degrees indoors seemed to be a better idea :) All in all a good experience. read more

Meet the Business Owner: Steve M.

Alo's Owners, Steve and Hilja Martinez are very proud of their Estonian heritage. Their parents were among a small number of lucky Estonian citizens that were able to flee the country by any means possible. This meant a long run to the coastline, taking back alleys and rooftops to avoid capture. It also meant leaving behind all they had known, a source of great pain and suffering. As Estonians, they are very proud that no matter how many times their home has been occupied by various countries seeking a warm winter port, the people have lived on the same land, spoken the same language, danced the same dances, preserved the culture and most importantly, kept singing the songs. Singing is in our souls and in our blood!

Now I realize that the 2026 was a Summer Olympics and Curling is part of the Winter Olympics, but we didn't care Upon entry to go to the host stand and tell them what you're looking to do (activities vs bar/waiting). The space is relatively open and you can immediately see the fully stocked bar, the bowling area, the back axe throwing lanes, and the enclosed curling lanes. We opted for a package that got us unlimited games (any) for an hour. We started with curling and we didn't need any special clothes or shoes. We were lead to a lane and it's set up like shuffleboard (you can stand on either side and there's two separate color stones). There's ice where you glide your stones and you stand on rubber for traction. You can glide by hand or use a piece of equipment that is essentially a stick to help push and guide your stone. There's an attendant on duty to help any stones that are stuck or that don't make it down the lane The experience was awesome. We've always wanted to try curling, but it's difficult to find somewhere that is set up to let you do that. We were amazed that we finally tried it in a desert of all places. There are no brushes like in typical curling, but you still get a sense of the Olympic activity. The bowling was fun too, but it's a smaller version like you might see in some novelty bars. Axe throwing was that of typical ax throwing. You had a couple different sizes of axes, there's lanes and you throw at a wooden target. They had computers to input your name and keep track of points. It was sometimes difficult to stick the wooden target, but it was fun We didn't try the food or drink, but everything looked good. The staff were very helpful. It was a weekend, and it wasn't overly crowded which was nice. Overall it was a fun experience Some tips: If your stones seem to be getting stuck down the lane, ask the attendant to move you to another lane. The hostess took me to a table outside, on their empty patio, and said it was the only table they had. I explained that sitting in 105 ℉ heat and very high humidity around a sea of empty tables would not make for a pleasant dining experience. Do you have another table, please? Recognizing that their tables were probably all booked, I offered for us to sit at a high-top in the bar area or at the bar, if that would help. There were open high-top tables and several open seats at the bar. Well, even that was fruitless. I was informed that the open bar seats were "reserved for the owner's daughter," which was an effective way of telling me my business is unimportant to them. Meanwhile, an older gentleman in a suit who appeared to be a host, stood there watching the situation and doing nothing to help honor our reservation. So, I left. As someone who enjoys their food and has patronized DiMaggio's on multiple occasions, their dismissive treatment left me not wanting to return. So, if you have a reservation, I suggest confirming that they have an acceptable table for your party's needs. And as for the guy in a suit, next time do something to help your guests and hostesses alike.

He wasn't friendly but he was efficient at his job. Food (N/A): Only drinks for me on this visit. Drinks (3.5/5): During happy hour, all cocktails are $2 off. While not a huge discount, they do have a nice list of 12 or so craft cocktails. I tried two and both were hits. One was a gin-based cocktail (Stone Fruit Collins) which was refreshing. The other was a vodka-based cocktail. This one was more on the sweet side. Solid all-around. If you're looking for some nice cocktails, this makes for a nice selection. It's more laid back than some other spots in Scottsdale which may be exactly what you're looking for.

I liked that they have a daily specials menu, and food prices are very reasonable compared to area restaurants. We started off with wings which were on special, and they were of decent quality and taste. For meals, we ordered the Mykonos salmon and rice, Sonoran cheeseburger, and cheese pizza flatbread. There were no weak points to the meal, as all the items were tasty and prepared well. Even the flatbread pizza hit the spot with us. The waffle fries had a special seasoning to them without too much heavy potato flavor, so were worth the upcharge to try out. The burger was well above average and cooked to wellness as requested, although the crispy onions on top weren't the best. The owner/bartender mentioned the one wait staff member called out sick, so did an incredible job of running the show attending to all the dining patrons himself, and checked in on us quite a few times. It take a little bit to get the check at the end of the meal, but service was great otherwise. All in all, although Metropolis is a bit hidden and probably doesn't get much tourist/visitor business, it's a solid and reasonably priced option for food in an area of Scottsdale that can get get quite expensive for meals.

I booked a solo seat at the bar just two hours before dinner, which, in hindsight, should have been my first clue. The night before, my plans at Chilte had evaporated after I arrived to discover the owner was hosting a baby shower and the ceilings were being painted instead of dinner being served. I wasn't eager to go 0-for-2 on my Scottsdale food pilgrimage. Pulling into what looked more like an aging roadside motor lodge than the home of a James Beard-recognized restaurant, I wondered if Google Maps had developed a sense of humor. I parked around back, followed the sign to the dining room, and found... a locked door. Naturally. For a brief moment I thought the Arizona restaurant gods were playing another practical joke. Then I spotted another entrance simply marked "Bar." Inside, Hai Noon revealed itself as a tiny oasis. Phoenix met Tokyo somewhere in a dimly lit room with clean lines, warm wood, and mellow music humming through the speakers. Three other guests occupied the restaurant--a couple finishing dinner and what appeared to be a delightfully intimate two-person baby shower. I took my place at the bar. The server welcomed me warmly. When I admitted I was in town for work and wanted to experience the restaurant rather than order safely, he smiled and took control. A few menu staples were unavailable but he confidently selected four dishes. The grapefruit avocado hamachi spoons arrived first and immediately justified the trip. Rich, buttery fish balanced against bright citrus acidity with avocado quietly stitching everything together. It's the kind of bite that reminds you why chefs obsess over simplicity done well. The white fish carpaccio followed with a little theater. Hot sesame oil was poured tableside, barely kissing the fish into submission. Fun presentation. Beautiful execution. Though once the spectacle faded, the dish itself never quite reached the same emotional high as the hamachi. The garlic butter mushrooms arrived... in a plastic bag. It shouldn't have worked. It absolutely did. Deeply savory, unapologetically rich, and refreshingly unconcerned with appearances. The house chicken, unfortunately, couldn't keep pace. Twice fried and topped with egg salad alongside a chili vinegar, it sounded far more exciting than it tasted. Sometimes clever combinations simply refuse to become memorable food. Cocktails, however, were another story. My first choice--the Kosho--was unavailable, so I settled on the Japanese Moss, a gin cocktail topped with yuzu cold foam. The foam leaned aggressively tart but never overwhelmed the drink. Later, after finally coaxing the bartender away from his phone, he suggested an off-menu serrano-infused rum cocktail with miso. Complex, vegetal, spicy, balanced. Exactly the sort of drink you hope to discover when you stop ordering from menus. By 7 p.m., I was the only customer left. Summer in Phoenix is merciless. One hundred thirteen degrees has a way of convincing even adventurous diners to stay home. I watched two reservations cancel while chatting with the bartender and server, who explained that between May and August, three tables can qualify as a good night. Location doesn't help either. Hidden behind an unassuming hotel, Hai Noon isn't exactly benefiting from walk-in traffic. The chef emerged from the kitchen several times during service. Each time he glanced at the empty reservation book, quietly acknowledged another cancellation with a shake of his head, and disappeared back into the kitchen without speaking to anyone. There was something heartbreaking about it. Here was someone capable of creating award-winning food, still chasing perfection while circumstances far beyond the plate slowly worked against him. Hai Noon isn't flawless. Service occasionally drifted. One dish missed the mark. The room felt almost too empty. But I'd rather spend an evening in an imperfect restaurant full of ambition than a polished dining room serving food without a soul. I just hope Scottsdale's relentless summer doesn't prove too Hai for many more Noons.
