We stopped at Aloha Grill for a fast, easy dinner after seeing a movie at Southcenter Mall -- nothing at the Southcenter food court looked great, and this place was pretty close. The place was empty on a Saturday night, so we ordered right away and service was fast. In addition to what you see on the menu board, they have rotating specials, and I got a shrimp and kalua pork combo. My dining companion got a triple combo of beef, kalua pork and teriyaki chicken. All meals come with a scoop of macaroni salad and two scoops of rice, or you can substitute some or all of the rice with veggies. Most of the entrees are under $10 and the portions are very generous -- you'll probably have leftovers to take home. The fried shrimp were tasty and crisp and came in a good-sized portion -- about six big shrimp coated in panko crumbs -- but I found the kalua pork to be too salty for me. The teriyaki chicken and beef were both good, and I'd get those again. The mac salad was just OK, but then I'm not usually a huge fan of it, as I find it bland. (Maybe with kimchi added?) The ambiance is basically like a fast-food or food court place. The walls and floors were somewhat dirty and scuffed, and the decor is pretty bare-bones. While we were there, the bored guy behind the counter was ENDLESSLY fiddling with the music -- which was just his Spotify playlist -- and it was really irritating to keep hearing 30 seconds of one song after another. But if you're just there to grab a quick lunch or dinner or get takeout, this may not bother you. I saw that they serve Cakes of Paradise cake by the slice, too. I love this place! I just moved to the area and was looking for a quick bite after driving 24 hours from California to get here (yeah, I know). I found this place on Yelp and decided to give it a shot. I was not disappointed. My friend ordered the garlic chicken that came with macaroni salad and rice on the side. My roommate ordered the Aloha Teri Beef which also came with rice and macaroni salad. I ordered the Moco Loco Katsu Chicken. Everything was exploding with flavor! The garlic chicken was rich and smothered in their gravy. The chicken katsu was crispy and paired nicely with the fried egg on top. The beef was soft and bursting with yummy juices. Not typical Hawaiian BBQ. I was born and raised in Hawaii and so, of course, want to try every Hawaiian restaurant I pass by. My friend and I ordered Teri Beef, Teri Chicken, Kal-bi and Kalua Pig. The Kal-bi was on point. Everything else was not good. The Teri-beef was okay, a little bland, and leaning towards a more Japanese style. Same with the chicken which was not just bland but also dry. Hawaiian Teri-chicken should never be dry. The most disappointing and a Hawaiian staple, was the Kalua Pig. No smoke flavor and no salt. In fact, It's like a little Menehune came by and stole all the salt from every dish. Portions were not very Hawaiian either. I know I've only tried them once and that will be enough. We live in Seattle and visited Renton for the weekend and the brown pepper gravy and mac salad at the Aloha Grill were the highlights of the trip. The service was very warm and friendly. The chicken katsu and hamburger patty were both good but not great but when paired with the gravy and white rice it made for a tasty and satisfying meal. The macaroni salad that came with the combo plate was possibly the best I had ever had. Delicious. As a side we ordered the Spam musubi and it was terrific, a good add-on value. Be sure to try the habanero teriyaki sauce, it has some zip. The patrons of the restaurant and the employees had such a good, positive vibe. My friends and I stopped here after a long trip to IKEA for some lunch. Located in a large plaza that has a private parking lot with plenty of parking (although it was packed since it was lunchtime). You order at the register and the cashier gives you a number. There's probably 6-8 tables lining the left side of the restaurant as well as tables outside when it's sunny (which is where we sat). Bathrooms and soda machine are located at the back of the restaurant and utensils/sauces next to the register. Aloha Grill has an extensive menu. We ordered a Kalua Pork & Cabbage, Katsu Loco, Gravy Fries, and a Kalua Pork Loco (gravy on the side). Big fan of the Kalua Pork because it wasn't overly salty like how a lot of Hawaiian places tend to make it and the gravy was delicious. Not too dense/salty but rather complimented the pork well. The mac salad could use more flavor, but wasn't terrible. Great portions, I was halfway finished with my plate when I started getting full (but ya girl finished everything!) while my friends left half their plates full (lawlz can't hang). The fries were actually really good (for being fries), perfectly fried without drying out the middle, while smothered in gravy. The katsu wasn't overly breaded and fried, which is a good thing and the gravy was flavored well. The over-easy eggs were also well cooked. Looking through the menu, there were a few things I wanted to try, but I ended up ordering the Katsu Loco and Spam Musubi. I was really impressed with how fast my food got to my work. Once I placed an order, a minute later it notified me that my food was getting prepared. I enjoyed everything. But, one downside was the rice was really mushy. I still ate it, but it was mushy and kind of hard to eat with the eggs and gravy. I'm not sure if they intended on having the rice so soft and mushy, but it would of been more enjoyable if the rice wasn't so mushy and soft. Spam Musubi was pretty basic, nothing special. I came by here for lunch and I enjoyed the Kalua Pork Loco. I was tempted to order the Kalua Pork with cabbage, but I decided to try something different. The eggs were runny (which I like) and the pork was tender as expected. Gravy covered some of the typical kalua pork flavors, but that was expected and I didn't mind it. I've been to Seattle for business several times in the past. My usual here is either Hawaiian or Pho. Since I've been to L&L Hawaiian BBQ few times, thought I would try Aloha Grill as an independent biz. First thing noticed is that the restaurant is in a busy intersection, so it was easy to find. The cashier (older gentleman) seemed ok, but not very talkative. I ordered the guava drink and the combination grill plate. Food came more than 10min later (this is around 1p), which was a little longer than expected as my expectation for places like this should be more like 5 min? Anyway, given this is the combination plate, I expected to be larger than what I saw others are having. So the combination has the grilled chickens (which they cut up in to little pieces), thinly sliced beef (similar to bolgogi), and 1 beef rib...actually, it was 1/2 a beef rib as it was just 1 riblet. I've been to Hawaii more than 30+ times, so I have more than my share of Hawaiian plate lunch. The overall taste was basic, which lack some of the grilled bbq flavor. Wasn't bad, but I had to add some sauces and spice to make it tastier. Then there is the mac salad, which is a signature side dish in Hawaii. in this case, it tasted like any other mac salad. Overall, I believe this place is overrated. Believe me, I'm not crazy about going to chain places like L&L, but in this case, they were no better. And the fact they cut the beef riblet in 1/2, the overall portion or value of what I paid was not worth going back. Whenever I visit these smaller independent, I strive to support these little guys.
