We were seated at a beautiful table and our hopes were high. The menu looked promising, the drinks were on spot. We ordered the "lobster" cakes which could have been anything from the ocean but sadly they were barely warm on the inside. We also ordered the pear and walnut salad. C'MON! Do something with the walnuts dude. Thanks for toasting them but this was just dull. We split an entree of Veal Marsala because the Gnocchi was not available. Cold, Marsala barely detectable, needed salt (had to ask for it as it's not offered at the table which is presumptuous, right?) Service.... Perfunctory and not too interested in our night. We heard another waitperson across the way who very enthusiastically informed her table of the specials (we had to ask), checked on her table and didn't appear rushed. We'll keep looking for a better Italian Restaurant in Eugene but this is far from a contender. We enjoyed an outdoor dinner at Ambrosia and we chose this place due to the broad selection of choices on the menu. The seafood ravioli was delicious as was the bruschetta, and chicken with gnocchi. I walk downstairs and put in my order with people just standing around and was told they were not aware I was upstairs. complimentary bread was actually undercooked, it was nearly raw in the middle. if cooked well you could tell it would have been flavorful. vegetarian lasagna was burnt on the edges giving it a bitter taste, flavor was mediocre. Pork Chop had a few large pieces of fat that needed trimmed, breading fell off very easily.. Mashed potatoes needed more salt. Asparagus was cooked very well. Apple bacon jam was not on the plate as promised, was a pickled vegetable instead that I did enjoy though. what really irritated me was the pork Chop as advertised on the menu as 22, was charged as 27. I didn't realize this until I got home and rechecked the menu online because it seemed off but I did not want to cause a fuss to double check prices as I was not sure. I made a reservation here for my family, visiting from out of town. We planned on going to the Shedd afterwards so timing was important. When we arrived, there was a large crowd of about 20 people milling in the foyer and no receptionist in sight. Approximately 10 minutes later , a receptionist arrived. She told the party in front of me, who believed they had reservations, that their name was not on the list and they could sit at the bar, which they did. When I stepped up, she could not find my name either and began to grill me if I had received a confirmation. by text or e-mail. She was quite rude and treated me as if I was fabricating the reservation., trying to pass off their screw-up. My husband and I were looking for a new/different restaurant to go last night for our 8th wedding anniversary. I swear, it's always Italian food for whatever reason. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. So after using the magic of Google and Yelp, we decided on Ambrosia. We went in on a Sunday night around 5:30. The place wasn't terribly busy, which can be both a blessing and a curse. It's great when you get a dining room all to yourself, but you wonder why it's empty. So about half our meal was totally quiet, which kind of added to the ambience of celebrating our anniversary. We had Darrell as our waiter. He was warm and friendly, and very helpful. He definitely knew what he was doing, and answered all of our questions, gave us recommendations and made the experience that much better. They start you out with an amazing rosemary bread with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and fresh chopped garlic to dip the bread in. This bread actually inspired me to want to make my own at home. I love baking, but it's so rare a restaurant will inspire me to bake or cook. Next we ordered the Focaccia as an appetizer. Had I known they give you the complimentary rosemary bread, I would've ordered the Pork Belly Bruschetta instead, as the carb overload concerned me a bit. Next, my husband had the beer soup, and I had a salad. Nathan loved the beer soup, and it had some sausage in it. I tried it, and my opinion was less than stellar on that one. But, the salad was delicious. Huge, but delicious. For our entrees, I had the filet special with mashed potatoes and veggies. My husband had the Lamb Osso Bucco. Both dishes were perfect. My steak was cooked perfectly, medium rare. I am a nazi in regards to my steak being done correctly, and this didn't disappoint. The lamb was tender and flavorful. The texture reminded me of a pot roast, after it's been shredded up, but this had more moisture. I loved the polenta that came with the lamb. It was a mix of white and yellow corn, which gave it a little variation in texture, and I appreciated. For dessert we had tiramisu. Perfect dessert to share and savor. They have quite a variety of desserts, which includes a pumpkin cheesecake, a chocolate moose, and several others. My husband and I both thoroughly enjoyed the meal and the experience. I'm very finicky by nature, and I can complain about pretty much everything. I couldn't in here. Which is impressive. The entire dinner lasted about 2 hours. It honestly didn't seem like that long, but it was part of the experience. It was that relaxing, Italian vibe, where you take your time eating the meal and enjoying the company of whoever you're dining with. I loved that, because you can get decent food anywhere. But it's so rare to get that perfect ambiance to go with great food. Will I return? Absolutely! It's very difficult to find somewhere I can't complain about and was literally a perfect experience. My wife's Seafood Puttanesca pasta had shrimp and tiny scallops, both tasted like they came out of a can. We were a party of six. Tab was a significant amount. Was in Eugene last week visiting a friend and we went to Ambrosia. Loved the historic exterior architecture and the interior ambiance. As we entered, we were greeted warmly by Armen, the owner. We decided to eat at the bar where Wayne quickly took our drink order and remained attentive the whole time we were there. We shared the gorgonzola stuffed artichoke for an appetizer which was sooo good and almost a meal in itself. I had the Spring Pacific Scallops served on a bed of spinach risotto with brussel sprouts and my friend had the Spaghetti Bolognese. Both dishes were delicious! We had a large group for our grand mother's 60th birthday and the servers made us feel so welcome and catered to everything we needed. Omg! Thursday night, table for two. They say 15-20 minutes, we can wait at the bar. We order a bottle of wine. The hostess is within 15 feet of us, and NEvER maps on... One hour later, the bar keep finally asked why we are still sitting there. Well, we are waiting for a table. So he goes over and checks with her; apparently she "accidentally sat us, without actually seating us. Stupid new software." So she takes us to our table... another 10 minutes... no server. Are you serious right now??? No offers for comped wine NOTHING! I tell the owner as I walk out how terrible this was. He can only focus on which area we were seated in. No "please stay" NOTHING!!! It's a nice casual setting: dim warm lighting, wood tables, wine racks on the wall, low buzz of people having conversations. A good place to get away from the busy street just outside the door. He went through the usual list of "My name is x, I'll be your server, here are the specials..." but had a less-than-thrilled demeanor throughout the entire dinner. My group ordered a pepperoni calzone, bolognese, and ravioli (lobster I believe). A basket of fairly good bread preceded the meal. The calzone was a large football of a thing, but huge due to a big bubble that formed inside. It was a tad dry, save for the provided marinara, and needed more sauce overall. The ravioli were rich, perfectly cooked, but there were only seven. I get quality over quantity, but compared to the other plates, it was definitely the smallest. The bolognese was fine, but tasted more of a basic marinara-topped spaghetti. Nothing really screamed overly fantastic. The decor is my favorite thing about this restaurant. It's a beautiful old building--looks like it's from the early 1900s--and the decor accents this, with vintage posters and such. Per instructions from the person we spoke to on the phone we set a reservation for 5:30. We were sat in the front room, which was quite cold. We noticed the table next to us had a space heater and quickly turned it towards us after they left. When asking about specials, the server told us they had fish, steak and a seafood pasta. Maybe it is because my partner and I both work in the service industry but I wish he would have sold us on the specials by telling us what they would be served with. We are usually very tempted by the specials as we really value the creativity of the chefs. The specials in this case seemed like an afterthought. My partner ordered the chicken Parmesan and I ordered the fettuccine Davide. Many other reviews said their dishes were lukewarm but ours were hot and fresh! When I asked for salt and pepper, the server left a bowl of salt on the table and fresh cracked the pepper himself on my dish. I thought that maybe he would ask me to tell him when but that never happened. It was way too much pepper so communication obviously needs to be better between the staff and the customers. It was a very awkward interaction with our server overall. Again, it might be because my partner and I work as servers and have higher expectations than others might have but I would expect higher quality service for the price tag. No negative things to say about the food but we left feeling like the service was very sub par. For the price point, I would look otherwise. read more
