I was caught in the ads I have been seeing from various social media sites. This is a Small old world friendly family run restaurant with emphasis on gourmet sandwiches. Old school Italian American music (dean martin) playing in the background. On a Saturday afternoon, on a quest for Italian food and pastry I stopped at this place. I was hopeful and wanting to like this place. I ordered the southern belle on a sweet soft roll and iced tea. Only one person manning the front of the house. He's running around with the few diners. So service wasn't brisk. The same is true for food preparation. Once my sandwich was delivered, it was piping hot, cut in half presented on a bowl with the half standing up. Taking the slightly bigger half, my first bite was hot with all the cheesy and meaty goodness. However for my taste it was bit on the saltier side which have been my recent case with many places. So I can't tell if it's me or the food provider. Or simply a dub moment for me. Friendly service but not speedy as long as you know it. I went here for my birthday after my relative recommended it and it was delightful. Beautifully decorated restaurant and very enjoyable food. (Mom just said to add in "It has the romantic flavor of a European restaurant and the food is amazing.") I loved the tetrazzini, my mom raved about the rigatoni and lasagna and her boyfriend loves the giant sandwiches. We loved Camila and had a great time talking to her. 3.5* but rounding up cuz it's a charming real deal mom n' pop. Place looks dead on like a small Italian bistro with about seating for about 25 or so, small outdoor patio too. Menu has some legit Americanized Italian staples, but there is also a huge emphasis on large deli sandwiches where most of the fillings are warm. A very unique draw that I think the local community is quite hip with. For a weekend lunch, it was quite busy with a steady flow of pick up orders non-stop. Gnocchi Gratin ($22/3.5*) Shared this like an app. quite ideal for a share. Nice gratin dish filled with soft gnocchi dumplings completely smothered in their rendition of a bolognese. The sauce was very coarse/chunky with tiny bits of meat/sausage and I'm assuming a touch of cream as the sauce was pink and had a slight dairy sweetness to it. Pretty good flavor with a noticeable fresh herb nuance, definitely basil and maybe something else too. And the top was broiled mozzarella, so it was piping hot with a nice cheese pull. 2 little garlic toast slices accompany. I liked it but just not something I wanted a big dose of. Which is why I'm glad I shared it versus as my entree. Veal Saltimboca Sandwich ($19/3.5*) They've got a ton of sandwiches, but I wanted to try something that you couldn't get anywhere else. So I skipped anything turkey, roast beef, even pastrami. Menu says "veal cutlets, prosciutto, mushroom gravy on a hoagie roll. Served with a side of au jus." First of all I didn't really notice it at the table, but after I scanned the menu for this review, what I got was slightly off from the menu. First I did not sense nor taste any prosciutto and that cured ham is a big component to the saltimboca prep. Then the side of au jus, was just a side of more of the mushroom gravy that was already generously smothered on the sandwich. The good is since the sauce was quite good and unique, my friends used it to dip their fries into. Legit move I must say. The veal was indeed quite there, nice tender slices of well done cutlets. I just kinda wished I would have been able to taste some prosciutto that's all. The sauce was quite thick and meaty in a mushroom sense. Not your basic white button mushrooms also, something more wild and silky, which shows their culinary background. Again nice layering of herbs just made me not to want to leave anything behind. The sauce was just a little timid in the salt department, but that is completely subjective. I also felt the sandwich was so smothered that it would have been a complete mess to try and eat it with your hands. So I ate it open faced style and left the whole top bun untouched. I say maybe serve it that way intentionally and maybe turn that bottom bun into a toasty garlic bread. You're welcome. Service was really friendly but you just have to ask for things ie refill on drinks, take-out boxes, check etc... My friends live super nearby so I'm sure we'll be back. I had the Just Joshing sandwich on sourdough because they were out of Dutch crunch bread. The chicken was flavorful but a little dry, and they put thick pieces of bacon. I probably needed a little more spread because my sandwich over all was pretty dry. While I probably won't be coming back, I'd say that the sandwich was above average and I'd recommend the place in a pinch but it was not worth the $20 I spent for it imo. Mayo makes me fking gag, not sure why they can't read the instructions, as I look over my receipt and it clearly said, "no mayo" on the order tag. At $18.95, it's by far one of the most expensive in the area. 80% of the sandwich is low quality meat and I had to take half of it out. Way too much. Almost no produce. Barely any lettuce, two tomatoes, few pickles, and the bottom of the sourdough bread was soggy after my 10 min drive home. Whole sandwich is warm, which personally i'm not a fan of. I wanted the roll toasted, but with it all warm, it was just soggy. If you want a good sandwich, make the drive to Little Lucca in Burlingame. Had high hopes for this place. Was finally able to revisit Americano after so long! Still a 10/10 in my eyes. They have the best sandwiches here perfect for any occasion. I was able to call in to order for pickup (4 sandwiches and a large fries) and my order was ready within 20 minutes. It was my first time having their fries and admittedly they're a little too salty but I love the seasoning and crisp it has! The #9 is still a favorite of mine - the Dutch Crunch bread especially always tastes super fresh. The "Godfather" sauce is an absolute must too. Their sandwiches range around $14-19 I believe, but the flavors that their sandwiches have make it 100% worth it! Plus, it does pretty well the day after too if the huge portion is too much for you. I can't use the machine. Pick something else", he says. You can imagine that this went on for about two minutes. He ended up sassing me and asking me if I was done. I told him, "Don't you get sassy with me. This isn't my fault. I am a loyal customer." All of a sudden, I hear someone whisper, "What kind of shit is this?" I turn around to see an older gentleman who owned three sandwich shops in SF for about 20 years and had retired. He was visiting Americano for it's reputation. Anyway, the guy wearing the gold ended up saying he could make the Philly cheesesteak sandwich. We ended up VERY happy with the food. (I told my husband to try it before we leave cause I didn't wanna hear his complaining afterward.) We also ended up having a great conversation with the retired sandwich shop owner and we promised him not to be deterred by this experience. We told him, "You're gonna love the food. When I said I am a loyal customer, I meant it." We came here for dinner on Wednesday the 21st for my mother in laws birthday. They were pretty busy with togo orders, and still had a decent amount of people coming to eat dinner there too. I felt a little bad for our server, I'm pretty sure she was the only front house staff member there and working. The sandwich options are plenty. They have tons of choices, and not typical ones which made things nice to pick from. I got the King Kong, it had Roast beef, turkey, ham, provolone, fried jal peppers, mayo lettuce, tomato, sauce. The sandwich was huge, I could only eat half of it. My son got the chicken parm which I tried and was pretty good. We also got calamari to start, that was tasty too. Today our group arrived shortly after the shop opened for lunch. The food provided had larger than expected portions and that made perfect sense for the prices quoted on the menu. i had no idea this place was even in the area, really good sandwiches. I got the Americano which is your classic italian sub with all the cured meats, oil, vinegar and slaw. For me I think the slaw having other veggies besides lettuce is a bit much typically but theirs is nice For $17 this is one of the most decadent luxurious sandwiches you can buy. The times I've eaten in the service has been very slow, and they always mess up the fries. Either they forget it or it comes out after we already done eating (and no one has checked on us at all) aka they forget the fries and suddenly remembered to put the order in. If ordering takeout, order online. Almost impossible to get anyone's attention. Ambiance: claustrophobic. Tiny inside a with a huge table down the middle, difficult to get around if there's anyone else there. Outside seating is kinda nice, but the service extra tanks.
