Great vegetarian-only restaurant to get some dosas at an inexpensive price. And that's the main selling point here. I especially like that they offer Rawa dosas (wheat dosas), something that few other South Indian restaurants offer. Also they're now open at 8:30 AM on weekends, so you can get some dosas they're meant to be for....breakfast! Downside- this place is quite a dive, the bathrooms don't seem to be the cleanest either. This is something that doesn't bode well for sanitation conditions in the kitchen. Also, I really wish they didn't use styrofoam plates and cups along with plastic silverware. read more

Of all the South Indian food I have had, this place is the best after my mother's food. Everything on the menu is delicious, reasonably priced, and they serve it quickly. I went here two nights ago, and got the Masala Dosa, Idli set, and the Potato Bondas and it was sooo good. The bondas melted in my mouth and weren't oily. The dosa and potatoes were perfect and their Idlis were the same. The Sambar they serve is to die for, always warm is just so plentiful. Just like sambar should be. If it weren't for the parking, and lack of seats (especially on the weekend) I would give this place five stars. I could eat here everyday if I had the option to do so. No-frills place where food is cheap and served on styrofoam plates. But satisfying. I got the masala dosa (served with sambar and coconut chutney), an order of samosas, and a mango lassi. All were delicious. I don't think I've been so satisfied with a completely vegetarian meal in a long time. If you don't have a car, the 2T Metrobus will get you right to this place from either the Tysons Corner (silver line) or Dunn Loring (orange line) stations, but it runs infrequently, once an hour in the evenings. I absolutely love this Vegetarian cafe. They have so many delicious south Indian dishes at really affordable prices. It's next to a grocery store (inside the same building) so I'll usually place a to go order, get some groceries, then go back and pick it up. The dinning atmosphere is great. Very quiet and clean and comfortable. My favorite dishes are Yellow Daal Tadka, pav bhaji, Aloo tikki chaat, and bhel puri. They also have great samosas and Chai tea. The staff is great. When went here there was huge line and no space for parking. They have limited seating. It gets crowded during lunch time. They have great variety of dosa. We had to wait for about 35 mins for our orders. Servers were rude. When we asked how much more time our order would take they just ignored us. After 35 mins our food came out and it was okay. Delicious! I came on a Friday at 1:30pm and they were out of samosas!! What a bummer! I guess you have to get there early! Ordered the chickpeas with the two large puffy bread things (I don't remember the names) and that was my favorite on the menu!! The dosas were not saturated in grease, and yet still so perfect and crunchy. Ordered a masala dosa and also the onion rava dosa. They were both filled with the same potatoes which I thought could have had more flavor. The onion rava crepe was amazing and delicious. Highly recommend for South Indian food! First off let me explain why I'm giving Amma 3 starts instead of 4. The food is always good and the service is prompt. The thing is that EVERYTHING they use at the restaurant is styrofoam: the cups for water, the bowls for sambar, the trays that the dosas come in, the take out containers... literally everything. Being an environmentally conscious person, I have major issues with styrofoam as you might imagine. I limit the amount of times I go to this restaurant because after I eat here I feel so much guilt. I wish they would switch over to some compostable materials or even plastic (it's saying something when you'd prefer plastic products). read more

So, I didn't know what to expect when I walked in... It seems like a fast food counter, but the food is way better than fast food. I had the Masala Dosa, Samosas, and a Chai - all for $11.31. Dosa was perfectly cooked and crisp. The sauce was tasty and had a nice amount of vegetables. And I loved the coconut chutney. Definitely a find in Vienna! I've been going to Amma for over 10 years now. It's a great place for take out or a casual lunch. Amma offers a wide range of dosas. My husband always gets the traditional masala dosa, I prefer the rava paneer dosa. Their rasam is to die for, and they also have samosas. There is a lot more on the menu, but after some experimentation, we keep going back for our favorites. This is not a dressy place, and it's popular with families, so don't expect white tablecloths or even waiters. A small amount of parking is available. read more

A friend introduced me to this place and I have taken my family and friends there. Best South Indian food hands down I have had in the DMV area!! The prices are very reasonable and the food is made fresh. I have had tried several of their dosa's and all were really yummy !! Their chole bhatura is amazing better than North Indian restaurants. I have split their onion uttapam and it was really flavorful. However, note that it takes 30 mins to cook and if they are busy it can take longer. I would recommend not to order their South Indian thali. They really butchered paneer makhani by putting lots of curry leaves, mustard seeds and South Indian spices and it wasn't appealing. In regards to their desserts I have only tried paysum and it was yummy. Their sambar is so so very watered down. I wish they would improve that. Otherwise wonderful experience. They are very busy so the food is fresh. I wouldn't recommend going on Diwali the food quality wasn't the same as it normally is. Please note you have to order at the register and self-seat. It's not a fancy place but good for family and kids. Parking can be difficult but there is a shopping complex across the street that has plenty of parking. read more

I always come here because my family prefers Vegetarian food. They have best poori and I love it. But here is the catch, when you order poori, you should be fortunate if they serve you real poori. May be BATOORA is made up of something cheap that saves them few cents here and there, they offer batura, assuming you are a dumbass. Happened to me twice, and the very first time I got batura, I simply was generous thinking they served by mistake and went to the counter and never discussed it and just bought another order of Poori and again they gave me BATURA. Then I asked the person at the counter that this is not poori and I've eaten here for at least 25 times and I know it. He simply smiled and yes he did realize someone can really identify the difference. Last Sunday again it happened and I told the person at the counter and he is very smart and handled the issue saying I'll tell my people and take care of this next time. It was our second time in Amma kitchen. First experience was pretty good so I decided to take my husband to give a try. Honestly,I am not a huge fan of vegetarian food but there will be some days where you just want to get pure vegetarian food. For that yes Amma is the one. The resturant seems to be quiet vacant, very few tables yet messy. The place seems to need a good deep cleaning. The uncleaned table and floor made me think whether to eat there or not. But my husband seems to be excited about the food. So we ordered the 4 items; sweet lassi, sambhar, Mysor masala Dosa and aloo dosa. Mysor Dosa was pretty good and crispy too. Masala dosa was amazing. I love ever bite of it. Sambhar was ok however the vegetable that comes with sambhar and dosa is worst!!!! I didn't taste any of the vegetable and the spices on it!!!!! This is an affordable indian fast food joint. Bit too unhealthy as of the other American fast food joints though. This place offers a variety of options from the sound indian cusine. A variety of dosas(indian crepe) and other snack items. They also have thank options(meal platter). The service is pretty good and responsive too. They also offer Mysore and Madras coffee which are a good change from the regular options all around. The rava masala dosa and onion rava masala dosa are decent but not as good as the classic masala dosas. These dishes are accompanied with sambars. The ambiance was pretty poor and reminded me of a Indian market restaurant. Lines are chaotic and everything is carryout and self service ordering. The lines get packed on evenings. Staff service was poor. We ordered 4 entrees, and they came out with 2. I asked about the other 2 remaining and they thought they already brought it over. It took them another ten minutes to bring out the last two dishes. The price was exceptional for the food. The bill ran $47 pre-tip for 4 entrees, two appetizers, 4 bottled waters and 1 mango Lassi. Really happy the price was decent for all things considered. The overall location was in a good location, Vienna, VA. However the store physical is terrible as people are in a rush in such a small tightly packed parking lot. Overall I wouldn't recommend this if you want decent service. Since then, I've moved to Richmond and very seldom get back to Vienna, but on the rare occasion I do, I make a point to visit Amma, specifically for the chole bathura. Still, after all these years, I've never found a better, more flavorful version (or even a version just as good) of either the chickpeas or the bread, *anywhere*, and I have tried! This is basically the latest iteration of the former Georgetown restaurant, Amma's Indian Vegetarian Kitchen. While the setup of the place isn't exactly recognizable (this place looks more like a shack), the remainder of the experience is what one would expect -- namely, solid South Indian food served piping hot at an affordable price point. I would not be Indian if I didn't complain about the price. There is no reason to charge $5 to $7 for a dosa. In Houston, I would get better dosas for two or three dollars. If Amma wants to work like a factory line, they should cut their menu a bit and serve cheap food to the masses. Their current split between the two positions is a bit awkward. Having said all that, the masala dosa was pretty good. Unlike the ones at Saravana Palace, the edges of Amma's dosas are at least somewhat crispy. The potato center is lightly spiced and has wonderful texture. The coconut chutney is decent (it is a bit too dense, but it has good flavor) and I'd suggest eating the accompanying sambar plain. The resam that I ordered was fine, but I would have preferred if it was a bit spicier. Overall, if I was in the area, I would definitely consider stopping by for a quick snack. This isn't destination Indian cuisine, but it's better than its closest competitor (Aditi Bistro). read more

I am not even going to comment about the ambiance and decor since one should not be expecting those for an under $10 meal. The place is clean, the cups are made of styrofoam, the plates of paper, but the food of pure unadulterated goodness. I have been here a few times already and this is my second most favorite Indian food place in the DMV after Rasika, but these two restaurants are two completely different levels. I tend to always get the Mysore masala dosa whenever I get a dosa. There is something sublime about dipping the rice and lentil crepes smeared in spicy chutney, into the spicy-chunky sambar. Oh yes, the sambar here is amazing! It maintains the texture of the lentils with big chunks of veggies and if you are lucky, one or more whole red chile pepper! My only gripe is that they don't sell paper dosa, but next time I am going to ask if they could make me one. I love S. Indian food because it's so simple. None of the overly complex tikka masalas and butter chickens and what not (which I like, don't get me wrong), but sometimes you just want some simplicity. What a little treasure! I'm South Indian and I've never been able to enjoy the pleasures of authentic South Indian meals unless I'm visiting Tamil Nadu. But this is just wonderful. Located in Vienna, the prices are extremely affordable, quality is excellent and amount of food is perfection. I chose to order Amma's feast which came with appalam, white rice, chappatti, Sambar, aviyal, rasam and other little wonders. Sambar and Aviyal took me straight back to Chennai. My husband enjoyed his Mysore masala dosai with Sambar and chutney. We finished off with mango lassi. I'm so impressed by this place, will be returning with my parents. One suggestion: the presentation: they could really get rid of the styrofoam and replace with South Indian utensils to enhance the experience and help the environment. read more

Look, Amma's is delicious, but the ambiance is so lackluster that I almost feel my appetite disappear when I walk in the door. Maybe I'm spoiled because I used to frequent Amma's in Georgetown on M Street. The lighting was warm, there were white linen table cloths, real water glasses, waiters -- a stark contrast to the current ambiance with factory/interrogation lighting, uneven sticky tables, cafeteria trays and styrofoam and plastic plates/cups/utensils. There aren't any waiters, just a guy at the cash register and a sticky soda machine. Is this really the same place? Is this just another restaurant that happens to have a similar name and menu? I am still so baffled. The saving grace for this place is the food. The dosas are strikingly delicious and unforgettable. If I were writing a review for your closed-down site on M Street, I would have gifted you 5 stars, Amma's. At this new location, your dosas are still excellent, but your ambiance is crusty and grody, which equals out to 2 stars for me. Ambiance affects the experience, and I am disappointed. I had been wanting to try this place for about 6 months but didn't until last night. We ordered carry-out, and I was happy about that when I walked in and the interior was dismal and casually dirty. There were a few other patrons eating there though, and I assumed the food would make up for shoddy first impressions. Our food was ready to go when we arrived to pick it up, and was still hot once we got back and dug in. The man at the counter was courteous and friendly, so I didn't have the experience other reviewers have had with "customer service." My husband had called ahead to see what they offered without dairy. I am familiar with South Indian food, and I love it, but understand Indian vegetarian usually has dairy in some shape or form, whether it's in the sauce or paneer or ghee. At every Indian restaurant we've dined at in the past, though, there is usually something vegan for us to eat, or the restaurant is willing to make items without dairy for us. So note to vegans, the staff at Amma informed us everything is made with dairy except for two dishes - the sambar (veggie stew) and the puri potato bhaji (bread with potatoes). They were not willing or otherwise unable to make anything else for us, which was not a problem but initially I had my heart set on a dosa. Another note - on their menu, they have a symbol that indicates if a dish is spicy. Neither the sambar or the puri potato bhaji is marked with this symbol, but both are spicy. The bread was greasy, so we wondered if it was made with butter after all, but it didn't taste like it. The potatoes were tasty, but too spicy for me. The sambar was also flavorful. Neither were anywhere close to the best Indian dishes I've tasted in the past. The food was okay, but I've had better South Indian vegetarian food, before. Unfortunately, at Amma there were only two options I could eat so i can't comment on the rest of their food. Our meal itself was not disappointing, but it is disappointing that there is a dearth of vegan options and an unwillingness to accomodate. That being said, there are two, so if you are vegan or one of the 60% who are lactose-interolerant, you have at least a couple items to try. Dosas take time, and I was told that the Rava Masala dosa that I ordered would take at least 15 minutes, and I was fine with that. Folks behind the counter were patient and nice in answering questions about spice levels and items on the menu. They catered to one person in our party who had a gluten allergy and to me, as I asked them to reduce the amount of cut up chilies. Great prices! read more
