There is a place which draws inspiration from Danish bakeries in Denmark but founded in the land of the rising sun , Japan with their former headquarters for the USA was in Hayward California and is now Headquartered in San Francisco in the Civic Center area. This particular location for this bakery is inside the Japan Center at San Francisco's Japantown. Walking inside in the West Mall inside the Japan Center I landed at the line Andersen Bakery. There are lots of Japanese sandwiches available like the strawberry cream sando and the teriyaki chicken and tamago. There also lots of different melon pan like the purple yam Ube melon pan. I got salty bread also known as the shio pan. It wasn't and flakey like some in SF. I also got the cherry cream cheese pastry. It wasn't as cheesy and flakey like some in SF but it had a good natural cherry flavor. Overall a descent place to grab a pastry . Always walked by this place in Japantown and thought it looked cute, so finally stopped by today! It was good to try, honestly not sure if I'd come back with all the other options in Japantown though. I went a little later in the day, so not sure if that affected the quality but all of the items I got were quite stale. The raspberry cream cheese pastry was probably my favorite, very flavorful and a great amount of topping! The butter chicken cheese bread was the one I was most excited about, but unfortunately there was no butter chicken at all in this one. Probably should just be called cheese bread, and though it was also pretty stale, a few minutes in the oven did the trick. As for the matcha French bread, I figured that one couldn't be saved by the oven because of the cream inside. It seemed very dried out, even down to the cream which was crumbling. read more

Purchased a strawberry creamy French and a strawberry melon pan for an after dinner dessert. I got strawberry pastries for my 2 year old cause he didn't eat much at dinner. The bread was stale. It was hard and dry. I was so disappointed they would sell old stale bread when they had a line. I used to love coming here in college and had good memories eating with my friends. After this experience, I'm not coming back. Wanted pastries but jina bakes was closed at 4pm and belly good crepes was also closed. Save your money and go elsewhere. I decided to check out Anderson Bakery during the SF Cherry Blossom Festival and let me tell you, they did not disappoint! The service is pretty fast here and just a note that they do sell out of the popular goods quickly so it's better to come earlier in the day. As it's located in the shopping center, there are surrounding tables that you can choose to eat at. I tried a few pastries as they were having a buy 3, get 1 free deal and it was delightful! Now, I did end up enjoying the pastries within a few days so I was worried that they would be dried out and stale. I was totally wrong. They still tasted fresh, the texture was still soft, and the flavors were not muted at all. To describe it overall, Anderson's menu is not heavy on sweetness if you compare it to a standard American bakery. It had just the right amount of sweetness and tartness to balance it all out which I really love. Veggie Curry Pan ($4.50, Grade C) - They ask at the time if you want it hot or cold. But if you're not taking this to go, definitely have them heat it up. It's a lightly panko crusted bread filled with "custom curry Hyuga veggies." I had to look up what "Hyuga" and discovered it is a highly rated curry shop in bay area. I will say that the curry was good and I'd even say if I were at the Hyuga restaurant and had this was a bowl of white rice, I would like it a lot more. So the culprit was the bread. Although it was warmed, it was very dry. Not quite concha dry, but somewhere between a 2 day old Costco croissant and a fresh concha. Ube Pan (Grade C): I enjoyed the texture and taste of the filling very much, but the bread texture/dryness was similar to what I described above. So, bottom line. If the custom curry Hyuga and ube filling were stuffed inside one of the breads from 85-Degree Bakery (like their choco bun which is delicious), I would rate the two items much higher. read more

Got the beef curry pan which seems to be one of their more popular options. I appreciated how they asked if I wanted it warmed up! The outside of the bread was tasty but I felt like the curry was too salty and the "beef" was indiscernible. It might as well have been veggie curry. The service is really great and the woman working behind the counter was very accommodating. She let us have samples and even gave us a full size beef curry pan. It was heated perfectly, crunchy on the outside but soft and chewy beef on the inside. I'd give it a 3.5/5. I got the egg salad sandwich for less than $8 and I'd give it a solid 4/5. I came back and decided to try a few new items, including one of their cherry festival limited edition seasonal items. Five cheese bread: It tastes like an Asiago cheese bagel. Part of the cheese is a little sharp tasting, but I wish this bread was more flavorful overall, which makes me think the other cheeses were probably milder in flavor and that it could've used more spices. Strawberry melon pan: The inside of it has fluffy mousse-like cream, and the outside had sweet sprinkles which made for a fun crunchy texture. I thought this is a good option for those with a sweet tooth. Japanese beef curry pan: It was very savory and the curry is salty, I thought this was a really good one and I would love to see a vegetarian equivalent that has a plant-based protein in it. They also have pistachio, chocolate, and strawberry tart and a limited edition matcha melon pan, and this location carries both the classic Andersen pastries and some seasonal items. I really wanted to like this bakery since every time I've gone to Japan Town, there's always some sort of line here and it is quite eye catching at the corner when you're walking between the malls. I'm a lover of classic Japanese baked goods like melon pan, cream pan etc. On a lucky Memorial Day Monday, every other place had a line and I wanted a beverage and a snack, and the line here was the shortest so I dove in to finally try Andersen's. They ran out of a lot of their seasonal pastries and desserts even though it was still only the middle of the afternoon. I ended up getting the: 1) Coffee Jelly Matcha Milk: -I LOVE Hamada-ya's coffee jelly milk back in SoCal and it's a must get every time I go to their bakery. I thought this would be an equivalent and I got the matcha version since it's seasonal. -Extremely sweet mixed with the bunches of unmixed matcha powder and sweet coffee jelly made this impossible to enjoy, even with mixing. -After 2-3 sips, I just had to toss it. 2) 5 Cheese Bread/International Cheese Bread: -I apparently got the last one, so means that this has to be one of their more popular pastries right? -It's not bad. Once toasted you get some of the crispy baked parts of the cheese, gooey cheese, and some sour cream like cheese too? Not entirely sure, but it's a mix of sweet and savory. Not bad, but the other 2 people who tried it didn't really like it that much. Every time I come to J-town, I think about taking a break from going to the same places like Maruwu Seicha and Matcha Café Maiko. But, I couldn't stop having any matcha drinks every time I see the word "matcha" on the menu. Even some of the pastries from Anderson Bakery have the same honorable flavor. I almost couldn't decide which pastry I go for, and some of the specials were sold out, including the the curry pan. I saw the bubble teas they got. I have no doubt the Pink Pink bubble teas really are truly legendary. * * * I am still completely happy with my choice. The latte I got was utterly undistinguished. If we are comparing Andersen Bakery lattes with Pink Pink bubble teas, Pink Pink bubble teas win 538-0 and that is just the score in the first inning. * * * What changes the calculus entirely are the baked goods. Andersen Bakery is an absolutely first rate Japanese bakery. The coffee croissant I had was absolutely memorable. It was the best baked good/dessert I had in a week of fine eating in the Bay Area. The coffee crossant is a croissant filled with coffee creme. It is zero sweet. In fact, it is legitimately bitter. It is bitter with the bracing taste of coffee beans. This croissant does not taste of coffee flavor. Nor does it taste of freshly brewed coffee. It tastes of coffee bean - if you just ground it up and somehow blended it with whipped cream. There is nothing grainy here. The coffee is wholly absorbed into the whipped cream. But the coffee bean bitterness cuts into the natural sweetness of a dessert croissant. The result is a bracing dessert that is utterly fascinating. The creamy was just as creamy as creamy gets. The bitter wakes you up from your reverie, While the cream lulls you back to dreamland. I could eat that croissant every day for the rest of my life. * * * But they have a lot of other baked goods at Anderson bakery. I suspect many or most of them are excellent. So many treats. Came here during that japanese cherry blossom festival so it was PACKED! The line was pretty long and the service had to be quick. Unfortunately because of how busy they were, due to the festival, we felt very rushed. The special items they had displayed on boards were no longer available and were not marked as such. And to top that off we didn't have time to look at the bakery choices in the case due to being rushed to order. We missed some items we would have chosen to get. So we ended up just chosing to get a red bean cake and what we thought was a melon pan but was actually strawberry. We really wanted to try the matcha melon pan and the cube croissant, but sadly and understandably gone. Hopefully our next visit we will get to try some of the specials and have a bit more time to look at the options when ordering. This bakery is so cute ! I always see Anderson Bakery products at the local Mitsuwa (I'm in the south bay), and now I know where they come from ! They have a pretty nice selection of different breads and pastries. The employees are also very friendly and get the line moving. I have 4 stars because the seating area is so small and the area feels narrow. Granted, there are other places to sit throughout Japantown, but I just wanted to explain my rating ! My favorite thing to get here is whatever matcha pastry they have (I notice sometimes they do not have the same matcha pastries). The large sign advertising toasted milk bread caught my attention--I love soft Japanese milk bread. After waiting nearly 10 minutes in line, the staff informed me they no longer carry it. What a disappointment! Management should remove that misleading sign. I ordered a mango and coconut tart and an Americano, asking for the tart to be lightly heated. When my server brought the coffee and set it beside a mango tart, I assumed both were mine. Suddenly, a younger staff member snatched the tart away and said rudely, "That's not for you--it's for me!" Unbelievable. Then, when I asked for cream, an older lady named Sue (manager or owner?) brought a carton. The cream came out in lumps and curdled instantly in my drink. I pointed it out, but she insisted it wasn't expired. The customer behind me even agreed it looked spoiled. Instead of apologizing, Sue reluctantly poured out my Americano and replaced it with a regular coffee. By that point, I just wanted to leave. No point arguing. Saigon sandwich had a very unique taste to it, should it be Vietnamese carrots flavor or some other spice. Well, something that didn't stick with me. However the sandwich was baked, and the crispiness of the bread was outstanding. Very much enjoyed the Danish Cream bake was out of this world and worth every single bite! Service was a little bit messy as the staff seems like did not know what they have to do.
