Hydronic radiant heating is the best! You know what hot air blowing around in a confined space is good for? A convection oven. You know what it isn't good for? Your health! Once you experience a winter with perfectly warm floors under your toes you will never want to live without it! Unfortunately, under floor radiant heating is not common unless you live in an Eichler and you will go a decade waiting for a good one of those to become available! So, what could we do? We looked into some simple solutions with floor panels, electric wires, etc. Glen really helped us from the start explaining in extreme detail the pros and cons of the different approaches. We decided after his consultation that our home purchase checklist would include a concrete foundation to ensure the best possible result with hydronic (hot water) radiant heating. The moment we closed on the house we called Glen to come to the site and start planning (after all his consultation there was no doubt in our minds that we wanted him on the project). He provided the radiant flooring requirements to our contractor and was involved during each of the key milestones to ensure alignment. Pro-tip: ask Glen to refer you to his Title 24 guys during the planning process, there is 0% chance that your run-of-the-mill T-24 person will have a clue what hydronic radiant heating is let alone how to factor it into their calculations (DO NOT allow your contractor to submit "placeholder" mechanical plans and T-24, it is a waste of time and money updating them later and dealing with confused inspectors!) Getting back to the topic: Glen is undoubtedly unmatched in his field and believe me, you want the best. The quality and attention to detail is honestly almost obscene; usually you don't want to see your house's boiler but his pipe work is so impressive you are going to want to buy rim-lighting so you can show it to your guests! Also the gypcrete floor is so smooth and level after he is done covering the tubing you will almost not want to cover it with flooring! Yelp is prompting me to talk a bit about value for your $$. Honesty, there are a lot cheaper ways to heat your home but no better way. Radiant heating is crazy efficient (when installed over concrete slab foundation) so you could look at it as a long term reduction in your heating bill... but, it is not likely to pay for itself even after decades. If you want the ultimate in comfort and air quality is a huge deal for you (which it should be) then this is the only way to do heating. Also, be aware that to get the most out of it you will want to pair it with tile or SPC flooring which might be a bit of a bummer if you had your heart set on hardwood (though that can still opt for engineered hardwood, let Glen be your guide if you have questions). My last tip is: be prepared to do your homework! Glen will design the system of your dreams but you must know what you want! So be prepared and keep your contractor(s) (if you are building a home) in the loop to ensure alignment; there are a lot of large and small details that need to get ironed out so keep everyone on the same page at all times and it will be smooth sailing! Glen installed a new upgraded radiant heat and hot water boiler several years ago and did a great job. The system has worked flawlessly and he has done several maintenance calls to make sure all is well. We had an emergency problem which we thought was with the system at 11PM night before Easter Sunday. Glen responded to our message immediately and spent 30 minutes trouble shooting on the phone and advising, only to have us discover the problem was not with the system, but a hose leak. Glen talked me back to undo what we had done, restore the system and make sure all was well. We have a house in El Cerrito, that was built in 1963. When we bought it in 1996, we had a couple of leaks fixed by different different people. We Terrazzo floors, so when we needed to get all of the leaks fixed, we used Anderson Radiant Heating (the first leaks we had repaired earlier were under carpet, but there were clearly leaks under the terrazzo floors). Glen and his team arrived at the time they said they would be here, and set to work. I stayed home to monitor the work, and they came to my office and said they had found the first leak and it was under the terrazzo floor right in front of the front door. They then made a small, oval hole about 8" or 10" inches long and they were right on top of the leak. They cut both ends off and handed it to me, at that point on, I gave them the OK to fix everything, they found. There were enough patches to the terrazzo, but under each one there had been a leak. Since terrazzo, is poured in and then ground and polished, one can't patch it. Thankfully our insurance paid for the floor replacement, and we put larger Granite tiles down over the Terrazzo. After 23 years, we had a few leaks, and also had him replace the original boiler from 1963. The first day he came with two assistants and the replaced the boiler and then the next day, he came back with one assistant and they found two leaks. They used their sniffer, and found the first leak. It was under the Granite tile, so jackhammered the granite tiles above the leak and found where there were some failed couplings. They fixed them and found another leak under the floor in our family room, and they carefully made sure to only get the tiles that are necessary. Their installation of the new boiler is a work of art (I've showed it to others that would appreciate it). with everything labeled and pipes insulated. I recommend without any regrets. read more

I'm so thankful to know this guy because we live in an Eichler and I'm convinced that no one is as knowledgeable as Glen on these homes and how to manage our heating quirks and issues! We've had him out at least 3 times over the past 5 years. He (and a fellow employee) most recently (3 weeks ago) fixed a significant leak in a pipe buried under several inches of slab concrete. By the time they left, the space looked like they'd never created the large and deep hole in the floor of our garage. They fixed the issue and left the space in amazing condition. And he's also a good person trying his best to answer the many service calls his company receives. He's passionate about what he does - which is an awesome quality in a service expert. Getting in touch with Glen was challenging as some others have mentioned, but it was worth being persistent to get an appointment set up because he fixed three leaks in the slab of my mother's Eichler quickly, neatly, and at a reasonable cost. In five hours he and his team found the three leaks (one at a time), dug the leaking pipe out of the concrete slab in three different places, welded in new pipe to replace the leaking copper, filled in the holes with quick-setting concrete, and put the carpet back. He also replaced some other parts in the old heating system so everything is now working well to keep everyone comfortable next winter. Glen really seemed to know his stuff, and he wasn't fazed by my brother watching him work (which would probably have annoyed someone who was less competent). We will definitely call Anderson again if we have any further issues with the 60-year-old radiant heating system. read more

Driver was crazy speeding on the 280 yesterday afternoon. He almost caused an accident, almost hit my car with a baby & dog inside. He seemed to be racing another car and we were caught in the middle. A person shouldnt be racing in a company vehicle!!!! If the owner wants to reach out, I have a video of the vehicle SPEEDING. Dear Everyone, I finally got in touch with Glen (see details of earlier reviews below). Glenn said he never got our texts before. I'm really not sure why? However, he gave me an appointment for 7 days later and showed up. He did amazing work to identify kinks and did the repairs. He also helped isolate a leakage in the house and worked with me to help trace the source (adjacent bathroom had broken caulking along the bathtub sides that runs along the walls). I'm upping the rating from 2 to 4 stars. I still will keep a star off as I do not understand the trip charge of $60. It was an appointment and the labor and parts already cost $380, so why an additional trip charge was made? ----------- Anderson radiant heating folks came to our house about 3-4 year ago and did some fabulous work with our radiant boiler. They also told us that we need to get the boiler tuneups every 2 or so years. since last year I have been leaving messages and texting Glen as it asks for in the voice message, but no one cares or call or text us back. There has been some leakage in the boiler room and we are very concerned . 'We're not sure what exactly is the issue. The website says theyr'e open and numbers seem to be operational. we are on the verge of giving up and now will look up someone else, although not sure where to go yet. read more

Anderson Radient Heating has been caring for my Eichler home's Heating needs for years. Glen, the owner, is fantastic. He knows Eichler homes with all their quirks, better than anyone. His work is top notch. In fact, Glen was here today, on a Saturday, to deal with a leak in my hot water line to the kitchen: this line is buried in my cement slab. (That's how these homes were constructed.) Rather than jackhammering my tile floor and fixing the leak locally, we decided to reroute the pipes over the roof. This means that I've now got 50 feet of new pipe. While it costs more than the floor-digging and local fixing, it can be a better option long term, given the age of these homes, which were built in the '50s and '60s. Once they reach a certain age and leaks begin, more can be expected in the future. But no more leaks in the kitchen. Thanks Glen. read more

Sent Glen a photo of our broken furnace and the correct diagnosis of the problem and how to fix it for free came back in his response -- Glen is the master. Winter kicked in but our radiant heating furnace did not. I left a message with Anderson Radiant and Glen called back. Glen said he was extremely busy, but I should send him a photo of the firnace. Glen replies with detailed instruction on what the problem might be and how to test and fix it on my own. He was right on, the low pressure shut off valve was temporarily disabling the furnace. We moved in our house in 2014 and that is when we learned about radiant heating. It was working very well u til last two years it stopped. This year we called Anderson people who had initially installed the heater in house. I could not get them thru phone but I got Glenn's number and texted him. He responded quickly came and had a look. He was very professional. He gave us different options. He told us the heating is very old and even tried to look for parts. But ultimately we went with installing a new unit. On Time & Under Budget Our 64 year old Eichler's in-floor radiant heating system had to be replaced and I went for a solution involving hydronic European designer radiator, approx. 6' tall and 11" to 18" wide. Our boiler was over 25 years old and was close to its end of life. Anderson Radiant Heating worked with me - they listened to the design idea, checked my calculations and gave me a fair price for a completely new hydronic radiant heating system. Glen, Larry, and Tony showed up on the day we had agreed upon, they worked very hard, stuck with the plan and outperformed my expectations: Their plumbing is tight and neat like I have not seen before, you can go to the heating closet and enjoy looking at it. Communication was great - quick questions, short discussions only as needed and very succinct, offering pros and cons. Courteous, nice people. And smart and good at what they do. Glen was great. I called on a Friday and he said that he would come the next morning. He arrived at 9:30 AM and didn't leave until the job was finished at 8:30PM. He found 5 leaks in our radiant heat system (!), the last of which was a bit of an enigma but he figured it out. He was so careful removing the tiles that he was able to replace them. Unlike other contractors we've had before, he is incredibly conscientious about trying to preserve whatever tiling, flooring, etc.. that he can as well as cleaning up thoroughly afterward and during. I was also very impressed by all his knowledge about Eichlers and their radiant systems and I also learned a lot about my house. I will definitely use him whenever I need repairs in the future. He mentioned that he is incredibly busy so I felt lucky that he was able to provide service so rapidly. read more

We found a domestic water leak in our Eichler home, and called Anderson Radiant Heating for emergency service. They were able to come in two days after we called them. They did a very clean job, and even when they were jackhammering the floor, they used a plastic sheet covering themselves to prevent the dust. They were able to find a leak and patched it by just breaking one tile which saves us a lot for the floor repairing work. Finally, they backfilled, and then used mortar to fill the hole. All the work is done in 2hr, and we have water back now. read more

Glen & his dad brings a vast amount of expertise in radiant heating systems. I recently had them replace Quietside DPW with Noritz tankless heater for domestic hot water, and IBC boiler for radiant heating. To avoid a single point of failure. Before hiring Glen for the job, I called Bruce from Power Boiler Sales, IBC dealer, NorCal for installer recommendation. Glen was #1 choice in NorCal. The quality of the work compared to the previous installation ( from a vendor recommended in Eichler Network) is night and day. Glen and Tony were like surgeons tackling the job. It's a pleasure to watch them work. They installed new panels, mounted the hardware, labeled, and even set up proper drainage for the condensation. The condensation outlet from the previous installer was just hanging out from the wall, and it stained our pavers. I knew less back then. I'm glad I hired Glen. They are a small shop. I believe they don't have anyone handling incoming calls. Glen does that and also sends out quotes. It's difficult to schedule time with Glen. IMHO, keep trying to get hold of Glen. It's worth the time and money to get Glen to work on your project. read more

We live in an Eichler-built home and have just finished an extensive 3-year-long renovation. We've had contact with many vendors and Anderson, specifically Glen Wagner, comes with our highest recommendation. We initially had contact with another radiant heat vendor in the area and while nice, he really didn't have a complete understanding of the ins/outs of a radiant heating system. Five minutes with Glen was amazingly revealing -- he knows a tremendous amount about the equipment itself as well as the physics behind it (at an engineering-level). Having Glen work on your heat is like having Mike Holmes handle your renovation. Even when traveling from the South Bay, Glen is military-precise with timing and is no slacker on the job -- it seems so rare for the "face" of a company to be the one who not only does the work, but sets an amazingly efficient pace for the rest of his crew. Coincidentally -- as the previous poster mentioned -- I've said to friends that I'd trust Glen with a key to the house and a blank check. Anderson's fees might not be the lowest, but the work is absolutely top quality and the attention to detail is astounding -- even more than functionally, the appearance of the final product is noteworthy: amazingly clean copper work, expertly wrapped pipes... it's literally a work of industrial art. Well it was time for our ~65 year old Eichler radiant heating system boiler to be replaced. I believe our boiler was the original one installed and while it was still working great (after a few visit from glen over the years), I'm SURE it was not at all efficient and was probably due for replacement. My neighbor showed me his recent Anderson/Glenn install and it was a work of art. I'm a manufacturing engineer and I know quality parts and installations when i see it. I had never quite seen an appliance installation such as Glen's. So I called up Anderson and had Glenn out for a look and a bid. My water heater was also 18 years old and due for replacement, so i added that to the job. I discussed the idea of installing a combo unit (radiant boiler/hot water heater unit) with Glen but decided against it given my particular circumstances. Glenn gave me a fair price for a completely new radiant heating system and hot water heater. Glen and his team showed up (in appropriate Covid-19 masks)and worked VERY, VERY hard all day. The finished job is beautiful. Glen's high standards of workmanship are a delight to see/experience. I wish this unit was not hidden in the garage! There is not a single company doing anything that I could more highly recommend for what they do then Anderson Radiant Heating. I sure wish that I knew before what I explain below. I have read countless reviews and a very common problem is that homeowners find that the company they have hired has fixed only a problem that the homeowner noticed, only to find serious problems remaining. This is especially true with radiant heating. Only a very small fraction of leaks produce surface water and we did not have any, but water was leaking below our house. At first, we hired another company that had leak detection equipment. They found a leak and repaired it, but afterwards water was still leaking below our house and they were baffled as to where it came from. There are many types of leak detection methods and equipment. Some might have found one of the leaks using ultra sound or infrared, but I doubt that any other would have found the larger leak. Anderson uses a unique method with helium and found the leak which was deep in the foundation underneath bricks by our fireplace. They exemplify everything you could want in a contractor. They have superior skills and worked as if our home was their own. Their repairs and testing of the completed work were done with precision. read more

Fantastic service, highly recommend. Glen responded to my text message within 24 hours regarding our spike in water usage for our Eichler home. He was able to come by in less than three days to fix the leak. Glen was upfront with what was required to find and fix the leak in the hot water pipe in our concrete slab. Glen and his staff needed to jackhammer the floor in our atrium bedroom and also in our carport to replace the copper pipe that was leaking. They also fixed two radiant heat pipes that were damaged in jackhammering the bedroom floor and tested the hot water and radiant heat system after their repair. Cleanup of dust and broken concrete was excellent. The cost for the repair was very reasonable. Glen has decades of experience with Eichler's radiant heat and water supply system. We had them find and fix leaks in a house we bought. The floor had plastic put down and floating wooden flooring on top and still Glen and his team were able to find and fix them. Months later, we had a burst water main under the slab (not related to the radiant heading) but we wanted Glen to check it out as he knows best what is happening in and under the slab. He spent lots of time and effort diagnosing and solving the problem. It turned out that our non-radiant heating pipes had more issues than the radiant heating. They sorted that mess out and then cleaned up our boiler room. Throughout this we were at times without hot water (or no water at all) and Glens team worked outside of hours and their regular schedule to minimize the inconvenience. Glen is a top class guy and he does the work as if it was his own place. Many other contractors have seen our boiler room and comment on how well structured, setup and labeled it is. These guys are great. We have a forty year old commercial grade boiler for our in-floor radiant heat system. The boiler is not common to this area. We had been advised by our previous serviceman (now deceased) that we needed a new liner. Glen was able to obtain the part and install it, all at a fair price.
