Typically I'd dock a lot harder for poor service, but it was so blatantly obvious our server was new (very awkward initial greeting, charged us double for our bill, kept asking us who ordered what when we made it clear we were sharing everything, and giving us our receipts without a pen to sign anything) that I'm letting y'all know that this review is solely based on food. In time I'm sure he'll be a great waiter. We ordered the corn thing and beef heart as our apps, steak and eggs and the sandwich for our main course, and the pudding and churro for our dessert. This was for HRW btw. Honestly, the only thing I liked from our meal was the sauce on the side that came with the sandwich. Everything else had some point that I felt could've been vastly improved. I honestly don't much about this type of cuisine though, so this review comes from an outsider's POV. First things first, I didn't feel too good about the yuca piece that came with the heart to be cold when the heart was supposed to be warm. Heart was a bit overcooked too. Corn thing was...well I totally forgot about it so it wasn't all too memorable. I don't recall it being that flavorful but maybe that's just how it is. Steak and eggs was your typical steak and eggs, though the cut of steak was quite poor. There was a white stringy piece stuck connecting the steak pieces that I couldn't identify, but damn they really could've given a better slice or at least removed it. It was pretty difficult to break. The mini roasted potatoes were...underwhelming to say the least. The side also came with the sandwich The pork was literally your braised pork that you could make at home, but the sauce that came was delish. The churros were good until you discover the strangely acidic aftertaste. I couldn't pinpoint what it was as we first thought it was a filling, but I think it was actually part of the base mix. Pudding was rich...too rich, it would've been nice to have a neutral element (like a nut of some sort) mixed in there to cut it. Again, I'd like to reiterate that I'm not sure what this cuisine is supposed to be like and maybe I'm the idiot here because all of this was done on purpose. At the end of the day, i didn't really enjoy it. Maybe the HRW menu just isn't too hot, but I'd expect at least one dish to be the dish to make me wanna come back and spend money on real menu items. Not so much here. 4/10, would not come back unless you dragged me. read more

My brother suggested this place shortly after we were done with the show at downtown houston. It was near their closing hour and we hope we weren't rude by going so late. The staffs are very friendly and letting us know that they are almost closed the kitchen but can still prepare food if we ordered at the time. Andes has always been a favorite of mine, and their HRW menu is stellar (which isn't always the case at other restaurants). We had the brunch along with a shared fruit smoothie--which feature south american fruits! The waiters are always friendly and more than willing to help explain a menu as needed--we tried the humita frita (corn cake) and antichuco de corazón (beef heart skewer). The humita frita had a very fresh corn flavor and great texture, and the beef heart was cooked just enough to have a chewy rather than tough texture. The boiled yucca it was served with was a little sweet, and we loved the contrast of a crisp exterior but a soft interior. For the main course we tried the steak and eggs (bistek a lo pobre) and the shrimp fried rice (chaufa de camarones). The steak was again perfectly done as were the sunny side up eggs. The serving of caramelized onions and potato cubes were a great balance offering some sweet (onions) as well as something crispy and starchy (potatoes). The fried rice was well-seasoned, with a sprinkling of toasted sesame seeds and fresh scallions. We were pleasantly surprised by the kernels of hominy which complimented the dish well. The shrimp was cooked but still tender, a feat not to be taken for granted. We had to take some of the entrees to go to leave room for dessert, which was just the right portion-- mousse de la parchita and the lucuma cremeaux. The gelee topping the mousse had a tangier punch, but didn't overpower the mousse underneath that had an equally strong passionfruit flavor. For the other dessert, the lucuma melded so well with the chocolate, and the alfajor was the icing on the cake-- a soft shortbread with dulce de leche. Overall, I love how Andes cafe really takes pride in the food they serve and more importantly the cultures these dishes represent. Each dish is listed by its actual rather than translated name, and the country of origin is included as well. I'm also impressed by the number of entrees/dishes offered during any meal of the day, which only makes it harder for me to decide what to order. Luckily, that's where the HRW menu comes in! Also from what I could tell, the items on the HRW menu aren't on the regular menu, so if you're looking to try these, be sure to go before Sept. 4th! read more

Which I think it's was worst it's that I asked the server(who was from Ecuador) how good was it and he lied to me, probably just caring about his sale. My husband and I visited Andes for HRW for dinner. The appetizer was (and I quote), "the best thing I have put in my mouth in a long time". :-) The meal was wonderful/amazing/stupendous, wine selection on point, and portions generous. We were fortunate enough to meet and speak with Chef David at the end of our service. Passion is the best word to describe the chef. I was very impressed with his journey and his love not only for cooking but cooking authentically and consistently. The service was wonderful Friday night including the delivery of the wrong wine which we found to be a very happy "mistake" that they tried to correct. But we were too in love with the mistaken wine to give it up. Update: We came again for Sunday brunch. The experience was much different. There was no HRW brunch menu as advertised in the HRW website/app and the service was not acceptable (wrong order, no refills for water, no replacement silverware, long wait for food, cold cappuccino, etc). It's difficult to find, and it looks like a hole in the wall, but once you are there and you walk in, the place is so perfectly bright, happy and charming inside. It seems to have been discovered by the Eado crowd, so even though it's Latin American food the customers are from all over. The food and service were fantastic and the prices very reasonable. I won't go into detail, but one appetizer and two main courses were consumed at my table con mucho gusto! I will for sure be back. Loved our breakfast on Sunday! Must return for dinner and try ceviche, etc. I had el Machu Picchu juice. Creamy, smoothly like juice with passion fruit. Highly recommended. I had tiny Peruvian Tamalitos Verdes. The salsa was spicy but delicious. I missed having some sort of meat in it like Mexican tamales do. But quite decent. I also had a taste of the Venezuelan Cachapa which was outstanding. Must get with braised beef for $2 more. Sweet corn pancake, good-textured queso de mano and the saltiness of the beef all go beautifully. The place is the cutest. It's in a community center of sorts. I loved the cute decor. They apparently have live music from 11 am to 3 pm on Sundays. Free corkage fee on Tuesdays - meaning it's BYOB there. Tip: we got there right at 9 am on Sunday and they weren't ready. Wonderful little restaurant! This place is a bit hidden, as it is connected to a large, old building right off Canal Street. The restaurant itself is small, but the vibe is warm, fresh, and inviting. Our waitress was incredibly friendly and had a smile on his face every time he came to our table. My coworkers and I came here on our lunch break and our food came out quite quickly! Pleasantly surprised. This place has an odd location, but the tiny cafe is beautiful inside and the food was delicious. I went to Andes cafe at Post with the highest hopes I would get an authentic ceviche since they claim to be Peruvian and I lived in Ecuador so crave authentic Latin American ceviche! I could not be more disappointed. I guess the first red flag would be when the waitress didn't know what choclo was. Second red flag was when you are offered ceviche with fried food. That does not belong in ceviche/is not ceviche. Last straw was all the red pepper flakes making it spicy. Ceviche is not spicy and does not have red pepper flakes and a tower of pickled onions. Truly a disappointment and do not call your "mixto ceviche" ceviche. It is not. The worst $23 I have ever spent. read more

Located in the same plot of land as a museum, Andes Cafe is a little difficult to navigate to get to. On the plus side: private parking lot in a gated area. The staff can get swamped, but they try their best to treat you well. My husband and I split four small plates, including a South American version of poutine. The main star of the show were the sausages. Somehow, it was a kaleidoscope of flavor while not being overwhelming. It was perfectly spicy, sweet, very savory, almost too salty, and herbal. I'm not a fan of any kind of sausage outside of chorizo, but this really made me change my perspective. The arepa in the small plate was solidly good. The cheeses were fresh tasting and flavorful. There was a dish with a tomato sauce and shrimp which was delectable. All in all, I'll be returning to try the entrees. They're probably even better than the small plates. read more

So much deliciousness on the menu! We ordered a couple small plates and one large plate to share, and it was perfect! For the small plates, we ordered Arepa Reina and Tequenos, which was kinda like the most delicious chicken salad sandwich and cheese sticks, respectively, that you've ever had. For the large plate, we chose Camarones Encocadas, which was an impressive medley of flavors and so delicious. As much as I wanted to fall in love with this place based on the excellent reviews that it has received and the variety of foods that are offered on the menu, my food was a little lackluster and I left with a disappointed stomach. I chose the bisteck a caballo. I requested that my eggs be completely fried but the waiter misunderstood and I ended up with a platter of hanger steak covered in egg yolk which I was not a fan of. The hanger steak, granted not the best cut of meat, tasted dry, overly-chewy and had so much fat that I had to spit out some of it onto my napkin. Maybe my particular food choice ruined the experience for me. My husband really enjoyed the restaurant and his empanadas were out of this world. So TLDR: avoid the hanger steak options on the menu! read more

They have a great variety of traditional dishes from various South American countries. Came here a while back and loved it. Came back again today and absolutely wasn't disappointed. Literally everything I got was so tasty. I've only been on weekends so they have a brunch menu with many different countries represented. Each dish tells you where it's from. We got a Ecuadorian ceviche with a hot and cold side and it was so tasty. The marinade was citrusy and very refreshing I would def recommend. I've also tried the arepa and empanadas off the small plates and they're super good too. For my main I got the chachapa with a seeet corn pancake and cheese and ham inside. It was so tasty I would def get again. I liked the corn so much I wanted to order a pancake on its own. Later I got the rice pudding and it wasn't super pudding-ish but it was really tasty. I def wanted more. Basically everything I've tried here is good. They also offer a lot of juices, smoothies, and coffee drinks so definitely try one of those! Love this place! Both the exterior and interior are adorned with the most interesting artistic show pieces. The restaurant seats about 50 with a few tables outside. Upon reviewing the menu we really had no idea what to order. This is truly an authentic Peruvian restaurant! They even have sweetbreads on the menu. I know most houstonians probably aren't aware of that dish. Try it at least once. Our waiter was very attentive and explained and answered all of our questions. So excited about trying some Ecuadorian food because we are visiting there this summer. We met for lunch and yes I had to try the guinea pig. Meat was ok and very tasty..ALL 2 bites of it. Came with 2 slices of potato and cut up red onion $16.99. Mixto cerviche is what my wife ordered. Clams came with their own dirt based juice and the teaspoon size white fish was totally raw. Seriously how does any chef expect the fish to "cook" when they are that size. The nice waitress saw what was happening and asked if we wanted something else. I asked can we swap out and she gave me the most puzzled of looks. $50 including a $3.50 tip and we walked over and grabbed a dozen great tamales down the street. I have come here at least five times and enjoy the breakfast and smoothies are the best! Definitely will come back for smoothies, but skip on the food. I had a great experience here. The food was top notch and I enjoyed the ambiance. This was my first experience with South American foods as such, but the server was knowledgeable and answered my questions thoroughly. The kitchen is a bit slow, but the food is worth the wait. There is a large mural by a local artist that represents the culture of the food. Usually I believe if you have nothing good to say about something, better not to say anything; however, this time it was a little bit annoying some aspects of my visit. I visited this place the same time some other reviewer called Noor H. Extraordinary food, flavor, I really really liked, I am not south american but trying some others I think this is a really good point to bring up. Now the buts: 1.- as Noor mentioned, this place has the music I like, old tunes that I heard when I was in Mexico, that nostalgia part was covered perfectly by the band, however, it was loud, really really loud, I think brunch is great for conversations and to catch up with friends but we barely could do this. 2.- AC off, or I think it was on, but not enough to cover the whole place, hopefully this review can be seen by the managers in order to fix this little issue. 3.- Service was horrible, we wait for 20-25 mins before getting something from the kitchen, and the cherry on the top was when they came back to one of our friends saying: "I am sorry we apologize for not having this, would you like to order something else" seriously dude, if it is taking more than 25 mins to figure it our that you can serve a dish, something is wrong. After we complained heavily with management, the service improved significantly. We got all our dished served, they apologized, even we got some extra goodies to solve this problem. Good way to come back, but the damage was done. My recommendations for management based on what I saw , please understand what is the concept of brunch, here is a good definition I got from wikipedia: "It is talk-compelling. It puts you in a good temper, it makes you satisfied with yourself and your fellow beings, it sweeps away the worries and cobwebs of the week." Guys, the place is loud, by definition a loud place creates stress in the workers creating a bad experience for customers ( that's a medical term used in the manufacturing industry for the last 40 years) please find a way to create a cheerful atmosphere without compromising your budget since the price is ok for the product (not the service). I am coming back probably, but not in the next few months, probably by fall I will give them another chance since I can see multiple communication problems within the kitchen and services, if by then they are still bad, well you at least have something from my side that can improve your customer service. read more

Friend and I visited Andes Cafe this past Wednesday and what it was supposed to be a 'short lunch break', it turned out into 2+ hrs fascinating lunch experience. We started with a delicious Andes juice, then we shared some juicy, tender & flavorful Anticuchos. Friend ordered a Pepito and I ordered a Sanduche Pollo a la Brasa sandwich. Couldn't decide which one was better. Both sandwiches were amazingly delicious! Per chef David's recommendation, I ordered a Tamal de Paiche. Wow! Best fish tamal ever! Oh, did I mention their coffee? Please do yourself a favor and order one café Andes Laté (or two) before heading back to the office. You can thank me later!
