You could not convince me to find me a better place for Gelato in Del Mar (honestly, in the county). An's Hatmakers is particularly delicious, with flavors that make you feel experimental and sophisticated. My friend and I came in and were helped by Faith who led us on an expert tour of the all the flavors (also, samples being called tours?? My only language from now on!), and guided us into figuring out what we truly wanted. The other kind person there, I believe Brooke, was a joy to talk to as we gazed at everything. really so impressed by the team there! My heart was set on the pistachio and the brown butter split, and it was decadent, rich, AND perfect. I forgot what my friend ordered but she fully went to another dimension of flavor. Also, the decor of An's Hatmaker is beautiful, really unique to the area of Del Mar, and it's at the best location because it's a highly walkable part of downtown. Love the new location, the decor and the vibe. Most importantly, love the gelato! Some flavors were the same as the North Park location but there were some that were specific to the Del Mar location. I ordered the Straw Hat (Mango + Passionfruit) and Trapper (Smore's). The two flavors tasted fantastic and definitely will be coming back since this is a closer location to me! Didn't like this place. A lady shoved taster after taster at me while talking about each one. I wasn't ready for the second one and the third one was in my face. There wasn't even a line waiting behind me, so what is up - maybe they just get in a mode. Not sure the point of tasting everything if the experience is then rushed and annoying. Plus I thought tasting everything worked in their disfavor. I got a flavor I would never have asked to taste as the second to last one and it put me off having anything, it was just not to my liking. Instantly one of my top 5 ice cream places upon first bite. This place is great, the portions are extremely generous and the flavors are unique and flavorful. Fun fact: USA Today listed them as one of the top 10 ice cream joints in America. That award is well-deserved. I was super excited to try scally cap (1 pint for $11.83) because I looove coffee ice cream, and hazelnut is always a plus. ordered online in case there was a wait, which was easy but probably not necessary. also you can check the current menu on their instagram the ice cream was tasty but you can taste bits of that extra papery layer that's on nuts? idk how to describe LOL but the texture includes just a little bit of that where it lingers in your mouth rather than just being a crunch. First time at An's; As I was still under isolation due to my breakthrough Covid case, but my wife ran inside and they packed two pints for her while she waited,. Within 5 minutes she had the pints in my hands and she and I sampled the the two flavors she purchased: - Canvas (olive oil & rosemary) - Leather (brown butter with chocolate chip cookie pieces) The freshly packed gelato was nice and soft, as gelato should be. As for the flavors: I was intrigued by the Canvas, but the flavors did not speak to me and I would not order it again (I had one spoonful and that was it for me). The leather was much more suited to my palate, but I found it a little sweeter than I prefer. We froze the pints and finished them over the next few days; they weren't as soft coming out of our freezer as they were fresh from the store, but fortunately they were still softer than most ice creams that we have frozen. Based on my first experience I definitely rank Gelato 101 in Encinitas much more to my liking. However, I do plan on trying them again to see if there are any flavors to my liking... I am hoping that when I return that it will be possible to get some sample tasters now that California has moved from a pandemic footing to an endemic footing; because to pay $12 for a pint only to find that you don't really care for the flavor is a bit of a bummer. read more

Tried An's Hatmakers on a weekday evening. It is one of the few establishments open in Del Mar past 8:00 pm. There usually is a line but it moves quickly. Customers can try every flavor, but the sampling spoons are metal so the ice cream can easily slide off. I tried the brown butter chocolate chip cookie, Nutella and chocolate, tres leches, and cold brew espresso. The brown butter chocolate chip cookie was amazing-a must try. I'd recommend not mixing small chunks of pistachio inside the gelato, as it makes the texture soft and semi soggy. This place is the cutest new gelato shop in Del Mar! Such a great location right underneath the Monarch Beach Club! The interior of the store was beautifully done. Love the woodwork and gold tones. Watch out Salt and Straw, An's Hatmaker's is my new favorite place! The flavors all represent different hats as a nod to the local Del Mar racetrack. The owner explained that they have collaborated with one of the top gelato makers featured in Michelin starred restaurants and the tastes and textures really show it! So excited that there is an An's Gelatos in north county!! I've already visited twice and got to try a handful of flavors. Because of covid you still can't sample the flavors before you order, but their menus are so descriptive that many of the flavors sound delicious. The first time I came I got their panama (cinnamon roll) and leather (brown butter with chocolate chip cookies) The next time I came I got their patty's visor (pistachio). The pistachio was so rich and buttery with a strong pistachio taste that balanced out the sweetness of the gelato. Each time I got their freshly made waffle cone (highly recommend!) Me and my family came here on a Wednesday afternoon. Upon walking in, we were greeted and asked if we wanted to sample any flavors. However, before we could decide, the worker excused herself as she was expecting a delivery for the store and went outside. She was the only worker there so we were understanding. She came back and said she had to go meet the delivery driver and would be back in 10 min. We didn't mind waiting but felt bad as she seemed so flustered. As we waited, a line began to form. She did return after 10 min and was extremely apologetic. She proceeded to explain each flavor and handed us samples of each. We didn't ask for them, and felt a little bad because everyone else behind us had also been waiting. But we didn't regret it because we were all amazed by flavors we wouldn't have expected to try. After we selected our choices, she told us it was on the house! She was so sweet and it seemed like she was doing this for everyone in the store for making them wait. So good!! I had 1/2 Visor ( roasted pistachios) and 1/2 Leather (brown butter and chocolate chip cookies). I was in heaven. I felt like a 60yr old kid. Very warm day so my husband, son and I ate are Gelatos faster than we would have normally. The service was very sweet and patient to all the customers who wanted to try several flavors. Walked by this place to go to a French pastry place upstairs and saw the sign said hat makers. Was curious but then I recognized the logo of An's. Their First location called An's dry cleaning is known for their unique gelato flavors in the adams ave area. This is their second location. Love their unique store front names. It fooled me thinking it was a hat maker shop in Del mar. I had their yummy Ube and coconut gelato. Creamy Ube with the coconut flakes. The blueberry and honey gelato was tasty too. The honey taste hit first then the blueberry afterwards. I'm happy it got a second location for me to stop by to get some yummy gelato. The guy was nice and knowledgeable of each flavors. He was able to give a sample taste of others to be sure if we liked it. The shop has a cute decor like you were going into a hat shop. FYI they are not for sale.
