Anthem on Rainey street is always a go-to spot anytime I'm near the area and craving a great meal! The atmosphere has the perfect balance of fun and laid-back, making it an ideal spot for both a casual bite or grabbing drinks before going out. On my recent visits, I've been seated right away with no wait, but it does get busier during peak dinner times on the weekends. It has both a spacious interior and a covered patio. I've been to Anthem a few times now for work business dinners, always a fun vibe in the heart of downtown Austin to bring the energy and excitement of a gathering of groups to this experience of a tiki/polynesian experience of food offerings on Rainey. The space and atmosphere is always such a beautiful space, the menu and service top notch and the servers are always extremely knowledgeable about all items on menu, accommodations for all dietary restrictions heard and acknowledged and even most importantly, the drinks gorgeous, fun themed and strong. The coastal shrimp + aloha burger + salmon are my picks along with the giant appetizer sampler, both the meat and veg options, such a fun presentation and great for a group to pick at and nom together. Parking is street or lot parking so you'll have to find a place to pay, but other than that, it is downtown and Rainey, which significantly means a bit of a walk, but if you're in the area, this is a great spot to dine, and mosey around! This tex-asian spot was super good! The vibes inside are fun and they have a nice patio right on Rainey Street. Service was helpful and very accommodating when it came to ordering drinks. The yummy fries are a must, no questions asked. For my entree, I got the chicken sandwich because I was really craving karaage chicken. The sandwich was crispy and wasn't super greasy. I'm really glad we gave this place a second chance. Our first visit was on a Sunday for a group of 7 since opentable showed they had reservations for brunch. Arrived at noon and they had all the doors open to the outside. It was unbearably hot. We asked if we could sit on the patio instead so there would be a breeze. They were so nice and quickly moved our table to the patio. We were literally the only people in the restaurant which felt like a bad sign right off the bad. The server then informed us that their air conditioner broke. That explained it. We enjoyed our meal, but while finishing drinks our server came over to tell us that they were actually closing for the day. We were planning to hang outside but then had to box the rest of our leftovers and leave. It was very awkward and was really disappointing. We had out of town guests and I felt bad that I had suggested this restaurant. It was bad. A few months later we decide to give them another try for happy hour and wow what a 180! The restaurant was busy and cool inside. We were seated right away inside and our server was awesome. We each had margaritas that were only $8 on happy hour. I ordered the charred edamame salted which I loved last time. They were overly salty that it really burned my mouth lol. I would get these again next time just plain. They are really delicious and addictive, but this time there was just too much salt. The salmon poke was great and a reasonable price on happy hour. We also shared the famous brisket rangoons and my fiance got a burger with sweet potato fries. Everything was great and our server was so attentive. The food is delicious! Honestly, I was a bit skeptical coming in and looking at the menu since it seemed like the portions were really small compared to the prices. As we were waiting for the food for about 25 minutes, my expectations were really low and I was expecting not to come back but the food definitely changed my mind. We got the JFC popcorn chicken, miso mac daddy, and the aloha burger. The aloha burger was sooo good. The truffle yuzu and pineapple really stood out and enhanced all the flavors. Food is amazing, no doubt about that! The location is great since it's inside rainy street with a lot of bars and live music around! Great ambiance but the indoor music is a bit too loud, we had to raise our voice to have a conversation. We ordered 3 dishes and all of them tasted delicious. Anthem was such a yummy place for dinner and drinks on New Years Eve. The place had a bunch of reservations but we were able to snag a couple seats at the bar. Loved the vibe and the multitude of drink and food options for vegetarian. We ordered the shishito pepper queso, char buff cauliflower and fries and that was quite a bit of food for 2 ppl. They had a tv streaming college football which was a plus and the staff was so great and helpful working on a holiday. In total with drinks, was around $75 with tip! I came here with my boyfriend to celebrate my 30th birthday and unfortunately, it was a major letdown. When we arrived, the restaurant was noticeably *hotter inside than it was outside*. Turns out the AC was broken. The staff mentioned it as we checked in, but by then we were already seated and could see all the other guests looking a bit... dewy. It wasn't unbearable, but definitely not ideal for what was supposed to be a celebratory evening. We ordered drinks, but while our waitress was putting in the order, we overheard her tell another table that it was "last call" because they were closing soon. Confused, we looked at each other--and the waitress noticed. She came over and told us that the kitchen was closing soon, though we could still order something if we ordered now. It was 9:00pm, and while we had no idea they were closing early, we'd made the reservation through OpenTable and had zero communication from the restaurant about an early closing time. Feeling rushed and frustrated, we decided not to order food and just finished our drinks. The kicker? We'd already prepaid \$50 for 3 hours of parking and were in and out in 30 minutes. By the time we left, it was too late to find another spot for a proper birthday dinner. Honestly, the lack of communication was incredibly disappointing. OpenTable provides an area to insert phone numbers and email for a reason, and even a quick heads-up would have gone a long way. We made a trek to get there and spent a good chunk of money just trying to *start* the evening--only to leave frustrated, overheated, and still hungry. I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience just felt careless on the restaurant's part. This was a milestone birthday, and it deserved better planning and communication. read more

I wasn't really sure what to think of this restaurant when my friend picked it out. It's got a beachcomber/tiki theme and I didn't come to Texas necessarily to eat salmon poke and shishito peppers when that stuff is so much better on the west coast. We ended up in a nearly dead restaurant during happy hour and ordered a ton of appetizers and split the Aloha burger at a great price. Their cocktails are really sweet but they have a great wine list and our waitress gave us a ton of attention! She was really spunky and fun - gave us all the great recommendations for Downtown Austin. I must say that Rainey Street is not what it used to be. All the cute houses are gone except for two and she mentioned one of them just sold to a developer for a cool $10M. It's high rise city now. read more

Checked out Anthem in Austin and tried The Cure--an awesome combo of most of their appetizers, perfect for sharing with 4-5 people. Food was fantastic. For the price (we are from Reno, NV), we were so impressed. First night in Austin and this place was just around the corner from our hotel. Appetizer Miso Mac Daddy was so good! I had the chicken and waffles-amazing. My husband had the brisket tacos and I stole a bite...equally good. Daughter, 13 and hard to please, had the smash burger with sweet potato fries and said it was the best burger she'd ever had. Server Liam was entertaining (card tricks!) and attentive. We were greeted warmly and opted for a seat at the bar rather than at a table. The menu was very confusing for me as it was a cross between American and Asian foods combined. We asked the bartender for recommendations which we ordered and wow, what a eureka moment. The combinations were so interesting and made the taste buds dance. The brisket Rangoon's and the miso mac daddy were great starters and the sesame seared salmon for the entrée was a drop the mic moment. Didn't get any food here, but there are cashews in some dishes that I noticed, so be careful with a nut allergy! I came in on a Friday night around 8PM. The place was about half packed, but I noticed a number of empty tables had "Reserved" signs so I suggest getting a reservation if you plan to come with a group. I saw a group wait about 15 minutes while I was seated at the bar. On Friday nights, Dub Academy comes in and have up-and-coming DJs play some sets. Great time to come in and listen to some new mixes. I sat at the bar for a few sets and had the Lychee Lowdown. As other reviewers note, this goes down really easily and is a great tropical cocktail. The only downside is parking. You'll be paying $40 for two hours in nearby lots. Hopefully come in with a group or find some street parking and walk! read more

Best friend in town and I've been wanting to try this place for a few months. We made a same day reservation and walked over. The service was incredible. We were seated in our own private area, and opted to share entrees so we could try all try a few dishes. CHAR-BUFF CAULIFLOWER - crowd favorite. Nicely breaded and vegan green goddess sauce for the win! THAI HIPPIE TOFU - perfect fry and overall delicious dish NAM NOM NOODLE SALAD - more noodles than cabbage, which was opposite of what we anticipated and lacked a peanut sauce COASTAL SHRIMP & FRIES - dish was mid. Breading was not "tempura beer battered" but tasted more like cornmeal batter, rougher texture and deeper fry than expected. SAMBAL FRIED OKRA - the okra was a bit salty for our taste but if you like spicy, this sambal sauce is for you! I also tried the Lychee cocktail, which was perfectly sweet and balanced. So far my favorite restaurant in Austin. We went during happy hour which was awesome. The waitstaff were super kind, patient with our indecisiveness, and had great reccomendations. We stumbled upon this place during our recent trip to Austin. I saw "frozen banana daiquiri" on the sign out front and we had to go in. I'm not a big drinker so when we found a drink I loved my husband was determined to stop in here every day of our stay! The bartenders and other staff were incredibly welcoming and were service minded. They looked happy to be at work! There was a good selection of delicious offerings on their menu. We tried the chips and guacamole (yum), the Hilo Hawaiian Sandwich, the Smash burger and the Nom Nom Noodle Salad. All of the food items received rave reviews. We sat at the bar on two of our visits and in a booth on the third. My only complaint was that tables in the seating area didn't seem to be cleared in a timely manner (we were staring at an empty table of unfinished food from the moment we sat down until after our entrees arrived) and service was a little slow (there was only one other table seated at the time). When our server did appear she was very pleasant and friendly so at least her attitude made up for her speed. I would recommend this place if you need a quick, quiet meal away from the bars and chaos of Rainey Street. read more

In Austin for work so I had to check out the food scene. After googling and yelping a few spots, my friend and I decided on this place based on its Latin and Asian pub food. We saw the option to make a reservation. We didn't want to take any chances, so we did. It was a short walk from our hotel. All of DT Austin is under construction, so you have to squint and turn your head sideways to make sure you don't miss where you're going. Cute corner spot with a small bar area that had a few booths and tables. The vibes in there were much different from where we sat. At reservation, we selected a "high top," and upon arrival, we were taken to the larger back area. Immediate party vibes in this space. The music was much louder. They had to know I was coming bc they were playing 90s R&B. There was a patio with seating just off of our dining area, looked cute. I'm not sure what those vibes were! We didn't need the reservation bc they weren't super busy when we arrived. My friend and I decided to only order small plates and dessert. We started with the Shishito Pepper Queso and the Brisket Rangoon. The queso was a super delicious combination of earthy, comfort, salty, and spicy. It was served with corn tortilla chips with the perfect crispness. The brisket rangoons were an unexpected delight. Anything with brisket you expect into be heavy, but these were not. They were still light, creamy, with the same subtle sweetness from traditional Rangoon, but a little more savory. They came out SUPER FAST! Next, we ordered the Miso Mac Balls and Honey Sriracha Popcorn Chicken. The Mac balls were a surprise in your mouth! This was more of an American Asian Mashup. First reaction is, "I'm eating a tempora sushi roll." Then you bite down, and the cheesy Mac and cheese flavor comes through with a hint of the miso. My mouth and brain are still confused, but I liked it. The chicken was just as expected. Crunchy fried chicken tossed in a sweet and spicy sauce. The cucumbers that were served with it provided excellent relief from the heat and palette cleansing. After all of that, we decided we had to try the noodle salad, so we split it. It was just as described, but I felt there could have been a little more dressing to help hold everything together. By this time, we're really full, so we sit and talk a bit. We also noticed that we had to start talking louder bc it had suddenly gotten crowded. I mean, every table was full. So if you don't have a reservation, arrive before 6:30. You won't get in after. After letting the food settle, we finished our drinks. My friend had the frozen blood orange margarita that she said was too frozen which indicatednot enough tequila, but was good and i had the Shiso Mojito that was a traditional monitor with the addition of peach and shiso. I enjoyed it. Now for the finale...the dessert. They only have two, and you only live once, so we got them both. The Hong Kong Waffle and the Pineapple Upside-down Bread Pudding. We started with the bread pudding that was topped with vanilla ice cream. It was a really wet bread pudding. We enjoyed the flavor , but the texture was toooo wet and mushy. The Hong Kong Waffle blew us away!! It was served as a cone with a scoop of chocolate and vanilla icream and topped with chocolate sandwich cookies. The waffle wasn't overly sweet. We came here again around 4:30 earlier today and had another great experience! The chips & guac, brisket Rangoons & popcorn chicken were all delicious appetizers! The entrees of the Bonito Caesar salad & hapa chicken sandwich were also solid, and I really liked the fries with the chicken sandwich. The frozen orange margarita is solid as well. I don't write reviews too often, but The Anthem earned this one. I just got back and wanted to share that from start to finish, this place delivered such a great dining experience. First off, the food- wow. It's not your standard fare. They take bold risks combining flavors and influences from different cultures, and somehow make it all make sense. You'll eat things you didn't even know could go together, and you'll love it. The vibe and atmosphere were a 10/10. The music is diverse, fun, not too loud, not too quiet, perfect for those who have a play list that's all over the place but loves it! The setup feels intentional and welcoming. It's the kind of place you want to post up at for a while. Drinks were delicious and Worth the hype. But the highlight and the real star was Katie at the bar. Honestly, even if everything else had been "meh," Katie would've made the whole night worth it. She's one of those rare people who's genuinely good at their job and also just... a good hang. Down-to-earth, funny, knowledgeable, patient with all our questions, and gave amazing recs (which were on point- and I'm Picky) Katie is the kind of bartender who makes you feel like a regular, even if it's your first time. She's a huge part of why we are already planning to come back and why I'm telling you to check this place out if you haven't yet. The Anthem is lucky to have her, and it shows.
