Anthony's Hearthfire Grill was always a restaurant on my list that I wanted to visit. I booked a reservation for the anniversary of mine with my girlfriend and I've put special request, in which I asked to deliver drinks as soon as we get seated. Also, the place had "business casual" dresscode, so I wore my suit and my girlfriend wore her dress. Upon arriving, 99% of people weren't even dressed properly. It felt like I came to fast food chain rather than a fancy restaurant. As we were seated, it took them nearly 10 minutes to deliver drinks, and yet they did not know which drink belonged to who. I specifically specified which drink was meant for me and her. That made it a bit lame and did not seem like a surprise anymore. Anyways, food was alright. I honestly expected it to be something much nicer. I've ordered a steak, but it did not feel super fresh, and yet for the price, it did not taste the best either. The server was good, and the location of the table was great too (right next to the window with good view)! If you have a dress code, you better enforce it. Coming to the restaurant with people in pajamas and very casual clothes is lame. Manage custom requests propely and don't take forever to deliver. Prices are a bit high for the quality of food. Have been going there for years, but never for breakfast. I went there on Easter hoping for a gourmet brunch, but was very disappointed. The hashbrowns were over done and greasy...my eggs benedict was skimpy on hollandaise and lacked flavor. The mimosas were small...and the tiny fruit portion they gave me was over ripe. You know, it's sad when you live in a seafood rich area of the world and you can only find two restaurants in town that have a good selection of seafood on the menu and they are both owned by the same company and they both are pretty spendy. Last night we ended up at Anthony's Hearthfire, having been to Anthony's main restaurant we were eager to try the Hearthfire because it is supposed to be less expensive but it really isn't. That being said, the building is very nice and clean, the furnishings were upscale and the view was glorious, it was a very nice place. The food was good, although a bit expensive. Service was good and water was refilled often but it took a long time to get our food once we ordered. The noise level was bad, this isn't a good place to bring a date for a romantic dinner as I could barely hear the person sitting across from me at the table. I had the Salmon Cakes, two crusty little patties of salmon about the size of a half dollar, they had a nice salmony flavor and were served with rice pilaf and green beans, the portions were pretty small, which was fine for me but hearty eaters would need a bit more to fill them up. Hubby had the Prawns Margarita, four prawns with fettuccine, the prawns were tasty and the pasta was delicious but again seemed a bit skimpy for $30. Maybe the meal should include a salad, just saying... Will I be back? Maybe. I truly wish we could have some less expensive seafood restaurants in town. This is my go to place for happy hour. It's one of the nicer restaurants in Bellingham. I always sit at the bar and get excellent service. This time we were meeting another couple and sat at a table. Big mistake. We got two salads, two burgers and the steak bites. We wanted everything to come out together. First we got our salads, mine was drowning in salad dressing so I sent it back. We ate our salads as our friends watched us. Once we were done, they got their burger and steak bites so it was our turn to watch them eat. The burger was cold. Ten minutes later my husbands burger came out (which was hot and delicious). Five dishes served in three different stages over 40 minutes. Ridiculous. Our server tried to explain that it was difficult to serve everything at once. What? Our water glasses sat empty while our server chatted with the bartender. When we told her about the cold burger she giggled. Nothing comped. You want good service, sit and order at the bar or in the restaurant. read more

This is my last resort steak house to go if everything else in town is full. The waiting staff is just terrible; when spending the amount they ask per plate I should be able to expect a better trained and attentive staff. I have been here 6 times and not once have I been impressed. The food, is mediocre at best considering their prices. If you're looking for top notch quality food, look elsewhere. Had the Early Dinner. The fire roasted tomato soup set the stage for a great meal overlooking the harbor. The side of bread had a wonderful taste and texture. Food was decent, server was very nice, but the food for our party of 8 didn't come out together. Actually I think there was a 10 minute gap between the first entree and the last. Waitress didn't seemed to be worried about it until I flagged down the manager who was very helpful and made it happen. We recently had a coworkers birthday lunch at Hearthfire Grill. The hostess was very pleasant, the view was AMAZING. Our waitress was not the friendliest. She barely smiled and seemed more annoyed by us than anything. She refused to take anything but drink orders until 'we were sure there wasn't going to be anyone else joining us'. We had two stragglers that were a little bit late. We were a party of 12. The waitress eventually came back to finish taking our order after storming off several times with obvious annoyance. We were honestly appalled by her interaction with us. Maybe she was having a bad day. We were not, we were there to celebrate. She definitely put a damper on our celebration. The food was just okay. I ordered the chowder trio, which comes with a cup of crab chowder, caesar salad, and flatbread. The chowder had two large chunks of crab, which were delicious. I loved the food and would give the food itself five stars. It was absolutely amazing and worth what we paid. The service, however, was terrible. To start, the hostess was very rude and when asked simple questions, she was short and clearly annoyed. Then we sat in the bar because we were told that was open seating. After sitting there for 20 minutes and no one approaching us, i finally got up and asked for a menu. The waiter was nice but not very helpful, we probably saw him three times while we were there. We've been to Anthony's several times for their "early bird" dinners which they serve from 4 to 6pm weekdays. Great price for a 4-course meal. The service is always good, they are so quick to take away dirty dishes, and it's got a nice volume level so you can actually have a conversation with others at your table. Their food is not necessarily above standard. This last visit - I ordered the "Chicken Shortcake" and it was fairly generic. Unfortunately, it was also cold when arriving to the table and because two other dinners had already been sent back to the chef...I just couldn't send mine back as well. I felt sorry for our server. Saying that - the Caesar Salad was delicious and my father loved their Creme Brûlée! We'd go back but only for certain dishes and I won't hesitate to insist on hot food next time. read more

This is an average seafood restaurant. We have eaten here at least once or twice a year for the last 10 years. The service is great. While the menu looks great, the food is often overcooked and not particularly interesting. I keep hoping it will get better, but it's the same experience every time. Solid and Scenic seafood focused restaurant with decent ambiance in Bellingham. Overall a very pleasant experience from start to finish. The group of 4 of us started at the bar for a HH drink while we waited for our our table. We were told 20 to 40 minutes and were seated in less than 10. Love it when that happens. I have been here many times, but until last night it had been about a year since we have been here. We have always had great service, and great food, but last night was different. We usually sit in the bar and order of the bar menu, which is a bit smaller proportions from the full menu. The waiter took our order, first Marcia ordered, excited about her hearts of romaine salad. Then I ordered, after I asked for the fish and chips he just walked off, there was no "anything else", or "will that be it". Its almost like something we said made him angry. Never again did we see that waiter. The kitchen staff delivered our food to the table, and just dropped it off. No questions if we needed anything else, or if they had it right. As we sat there eating our food, other wait staff serviced the other tables around us, but our waiter was not to be seen. Nobody from the restaurant even checked in on us once. We we were done eating, I had to actually flag down another waiter and ask him to bring us our bill. Wow, one of last years favorites, to a complete disappointment. My boyfriend and I got a gift card for Christmas so we hiked down. The atmosphere was lovely, the building is spacious and well lit. I have no idea how the food was. There is not a single non meat item on the menu. Not even a salad. The waitress didn't seem open to the sort of meal-from-scratch-substitutions I would require. I love Anythony's Hearthfire Gill. I love it in the heat of summer, when I get away from work early, stake out a seat in the bar, and order from the happy hour menu. Cheap pints and tasty appetizers are worth the extra effort. But don't be late! Happy Hour in the bar fills up quickly!! I love Anthony's Hearthfire Grill pretty much any other time of year, in the dining room. This building used to house "The Marina" back in my teens...so maybe I have some nostalgia for the good 'ole days, but Anthony's does a very nice job. I like the local flair of the menu, seeming to always feature some local, fruit, fish, or vegetable prepared in a tasty manner. One problem I have had more than once...okay...more than five times, even when window seats are available and I have a reservation, I get stuck in some back table away from the views. For dinner, more than half the reason I come here is for the view during dinner. If you get a table with a good view, particular along the glass, the food is worth the visit. read more

My husband and I used to make this place our special spot. We would go before special occasions or bring our out of town friends here for a special treat. Unfortunately our most recent experiences have had us reconsidering our stance. The food has been inconsistent as of late, and if it is not one thing it is another. At our last visit our guests ordered two different steak dishes, both medium rare. One steak, the filet mignon was served quite medium, just barely a bit of pink, and the other was terribly well done (a Steak Oscar). The saving grace was the waitress. We didn't send anything back, and only mentioned the steak oscar, and she had it removed from the check. She was very apologetic and mentioned how disappointing the dish must have been for us. I just struggle because the error in the food seemed to have been caused by the dishes sitting too long in the window. There seems to be a lack of team work to get hot food out to guests, or a lack of communication in the kitchen that results in dishes not getting done at the same time. The place has beautiful views, but if I am going to spend money on a good meal I want reassurance that it will be great. read more

Bar-none, the worst restaurant experience I've ever had, made worse by the fact that it was a celebratory birthday dinner-date where my fiancee wanted to take me somewhere closer to 'fancy.' A part of me wonders if me and my fiancee were discarded as customers because we were under-dressed twenty-somethings, but 'discarded' is exactly how we felt. The place was fairly crowded, and were were seated outside in a table surrounded by other, very active tables. We sat for over half an hour before we were even asked about drinks, which, in retrospect, should have been a sign enough of things to come. At 50 minutes we looked around and noticed other tables with consistent appetizers (i.e., bread!), so we got the attention of our very flustered waitress and asked if these were complementary, to which she said "Yes" followed by a period of very awkward silence, and a slow build up to an unhappy "Uh, did you want some?" Awesome. At 90 minutes nothing had come -- not our appetizers, not our drinks. We should have just stood up and left, but waited to tell the waitress. The waitress literally told us we couldn't leave because our food was being cooked, unless we wanted to pay for everything first. OK. Awesome again. Our meals came before the drinks or the appetizers and were dead-cold. Our $10 drinks were watered down and doused with sugar in dirty glasses. The appetizer was pretty good when it finally came last. When we tallied our issues with the waitress at the 2-hour mark, we were simply told "OK, uhm, you need to pay...." No apology. No explanation. Just a flat statement that we need to pay before leaving. $57 dinner, no tip. If this experience gave me anything, it told me I need to be a demanding jerk if service is this terrible, despite my constant fear of a food-spit combo. I like to think I'm not exaggerating any of this. It was remarkably bad; I did not think service could be this bad anywhere, especially a 'nice' (i.e., expensive) restaurant like this when customers around us seemed completely happy. I wonder if any other customers noticed us sitting there the whole time, not eating or drinking anything, being told to wait and pay multiple times by a very unhappy waitress. I wonder if the waitress was having a bad day, or if she really did just peg us as a waste of time, or maybe we were a waste once they realized they forgot about us for an entire hour -- or what. This place is kinda pricey but it was also delicious. The location is excellent for looking out the windows because there are boats coming and going past all the time. Everybody in my party enjoyed their food and the people who got the seafood bruschetta were raving about it. First I suggest reservations on Friday. We were seated outside, it was beautiful, warm, and a good view of the marina. Appetizer was shrimp cocktail, and caeser salad. The shrimp according to the menu was fresh. It was actually frozen and thawed in water. Very canned small, tasteless and mushy. For 8 bucks I returned it unfinished. The caesar was very tasty, lettuce was fresh and crispy. Individual cuts of garlic bread was very good. I ordered a pale ale local beer and received a dark bitter, it was tasty none the less. Main course was the most expensive on the menu. A 14oz ribeye cut, $35. Served with cut potatoes, and frozen green beans, several of which were brown and un-eatable. My wife ordered well done and received it pink in the middle. I ordered medium and received it more medium rare. Both still tasty, more fat than I'm use to but still very good. Overall the service was acceptable, could have been a bit faster. The appetizer was half acceptable, don't order the shrimp cocktail. The meal was not worth the money paid for it but was tasty none the less. In my opinion we will not be returning. read more

Husband and I dined in on a Sunday evening for our anniversary. The restaurant needs a little renovating, but the views are fantastic. We got the seasonal salad and calamari to start, both tasted lovely and fresh. The steak was a tad bit dry, but the wagyu burger was fantastic. Overall we had a good time, our server was very kind and went above and beyond to accommodate our requests. I can't eat garlic and he made sure everything we were served was garlic free, or readily offered substitutions. I have eaten here a lot, and its gone down hill in the last year or so, the last few times I had lunch here it took way too long & my food arrived cold, the wait person was obviously handling too many tables to give any one proper service (not his fault, thats bad management) he was trying but you cant be everywhere at once. Lunch & dinners have arrived cold more than once, we all have the occasional bad day, and yes they are really good about fixing it when it happens, (once you can get your wait persons attention) but its happened way too many times for it to be the occasional glitch.... the slow service and lackluster food has become an expectation and normal. When I go there now (only when outvoted) I EXPECT slow service, a generally less than welcoming atmosphere (it feels like they take you for granted) and slow to bad service... and a 50/50 shot that my meal will arrive cold. I used to call this one of the best places in town....not so much any more, I might get lucky... but Anthonys isn't a cheap restaurant and for that kinda cash, I am not willing to roll the dice and "hope" my meal is hot, and that Im going to get good service. Good food, good service and great views while you visit. I like this place much better than the regular Anthony's restaurant. A simpler menu (than Anthony's) yet still nicely prepared ~ while it's a bit spendy I don't feel like I spent too much on food prepared more "fancy" than it needs to be ~ the service matches the higher prices they charge. I recommend this place for a special occasion or a nicer than average lunch once in a while. read more
